Everyone remembers the classic “sixteen words” from the 2003 State of the Union that came back to haunt the Bush Administration — “The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.”
ÂÂ
What sixteen words from tonight’s State of the Union will come back to haunt President Bush tonight? Use this post to nominate your sixteen words. We will pick and post the winning submission tomorrow.
“The principle here is clear: a taxpayer dollar must be spent wisely, or not at all. “
February 2nd, 2005 at 8:46 pmTo make our economy stronger and more productive, we must make health care more affordable,(15 words)
February 2nd, 2005 at 8:53 pmI’m not listening to the address just playin’ the drinking game so everyone tell me when to drink.
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:01 pmAs a resident of NYC, I hope I’m wrong. But I fear he’ll most regret these 22 words: “Our men and women in uniform are fighting terrorists in Iraq, so we do not have to face them here at home”.
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:03 pm“For the good of families, children, and society, I support a constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage.”
Protect marriage from what exactly?
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:08 pm“America’s economy is the fastest growing of any major industrialized nation.”
Is that true? Honestly. I thought that was China. Are they not considered industrialized?
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:10 pm“Fool me once, shame on…shame on you; You fool me, you can’t get fooled again.” (16 words)
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:12 pmA taxpayer dollar must be spent wisely, or not at all.
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:15 pm“By the year 2042, the entire system would be exhausted and bankrupt.”
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:15 pmNot watching. don’t have the stomach for it. whatever ‘he’ is proposing I’m against it. Whatever ‘he’ is stating as fact – it is probably twisted.
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:17 pmThe man has never been a success at any business and he is going to show us how to “fix” social security Hahahahahaha.
I especially like this bit: “Personal retirement accounts should be familiar to federal employees, because you already have something similar, called the Thrift Savings Plan, which lets workers deposit a portion of their paychecks into any of five different broadly based investment funds. It is time to extend the same security, and choice, and ownership to young Americans.”
Don’t federal employees also get SS on top of this 401k plan?
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:17 pm“I will cut the budget deficit in half by 2009″
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:17 pmWhich, unfortunately, will come about by cutting every program that actually benefits the working poor.
“The principle here is clear: a taxpayer dollar must be spent wisely, or not at all.”
I see some others beat me to it! :)
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:22 pmQuoting FDR in speech where he wants to privatize SS is a yellow cake moment to me.
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:25 pmI have a message for every American who is 55 or older: Do not let anyone mislead you. For you, the Social Security system will not change in any way.
OOPS – 30 words!
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:25 pm“… and more production here at home, including safe, clean nucular energy.“ We’ve barely harnessed the power of the atom’s nucleus. What terrors might befall us if scientists finally discover this president’s much touted “nucule”?
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:25 pmThis is all the religious right gets: “Because marriage is a sacred institution and the foundation of society, it should not be re-defined by activist judges. For the good of families, children, and society, I support a constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage.”
Boy I’d be pissed if I was a wingnut!
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:33 pmbecause people on trial for their lives must have competent lawyers by their side.
Translation (I had to put the “trial lawyers” into the speech, somewhere)
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:39 pm“And best of all, the money in the account is yours, and the government can never take it away.”
But duh George, the market can take it away.
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:40 pmHow about eleven?
“America’s prosperity requires restraining the spending appetite of the federal government.”
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:40 pmThey keep coming … “The United States has no right, no desire, and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else.”
That’s a “real good” one.
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:45 pm“In Iraq, 28 countries have troops on the ground” – 9 words that will haunt him in the next few months.. then again he probably doesn’t care..
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:51 pmWhy hasn’t anyone jumped on GW’s “Faith Based” solutions to gangviolence. What does he plan to do, replace guns with Jesus?
February 2nd, 2005 at 9:57 pmIf his mouth is moving, he’s lying!–sums up his waste-of-space existence.
February 2nd, 2005 at 10:03 pm“By the year 2042, the entire system would be exhausted and bankrupt. If steps are not taken to avert that outcome, the only solutions would be drastically higher taxes, massive new borrowing, or sudden and severe cuts in Social Security benefits or other government programs.”
February 2nd, 2005 at 10:05 pm“By the year 2042, the entire system would be exhausted and bankrupt. If steps are not taken to avert that outcome, the only solutions would be drastically higher taxes, massive new borrowing, or sudden and severe cuts in Social Security benefits or other government programs.”
February 2nd, 2005 at 10:05 pmI will listen to anyone who has a good idea to offer. (12 words — but that just makes it a more compact lie)
February 2nd, 2005 at 10:09 pm“…holds the growth of discretionary spending below inflation, and stays on track to cut the deficit in half by 2009.”
Here’s my vote for the 16 words – oops I couldn’t stay on track either.
February 2nd, 2005 at 10:11 pmI heard the speech. I figured out “Cong-gerse”, “teer-knee”, “tare-bull”, and even “lid-er-see,” but what the h*** is a “You-ray-nian”?
February 2nd, 2005 at 10:11 pmThe United States has no right, no desire, and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else.
So obvious a lie has to be regreted eventually. No?
February 2nd, 2005 at 10:21 pmSaying that discriminating against gays by amending the Constitution is a way to “honor and pass along the values that sustain a free society.”
Mixter
February 2nd, 2005 at 10:37 pm“and the best of the money in the account is yours, and the government can never take it away”….except in taxes… I’m with another commentator: it’s excruciatingly painful to listen to the SH.
February 2nd, 2005 at 11:21 pmOK, I am cheating, but I have three favorites:
1. “…we have been placed in office by the votes of the people we serve.”
Priceless, Mr. Bush.
2. “My budget substantially reduces or eliminates more than 150 government
programs that are not getting results, or duplicate current efforts,
or do not fulfill essential priorities.”
Duplicate current efforts?? Who needs condom/sex education when we have all those abstinence courses…
3. “And so we must join together to strengthen and save Social Security.”
Really? And when it ends in twenty years, can we blame you?
February 2nd, 2005 at 11:25 pmMy nominee for the sixteen words.
“We will make sure that your earnings are not eaten up by hidden Wall Street fees. “
February 2nd, 2005 at 11:41 pm“And when that result is achieved, our men and women serving in Iraq will return home…” (that’s 16) “…with the honor they have earned.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:02 am“In the past four years, we have provided tax relief to every person who pays income taxes, overcome a recession, opened up new markets abroad, prosecuted corporate criminals, raised home ownership to the highest level in history, and in the last year alone, the United States has added 2.3 million new jobs.” Actually, that’s an almost 100K exaggeration. Go to
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:13 amhttp://www.stats.bls.gov/webapps/legacy/cesbtab1.htm, then pick “seasonally adjusted” and then “retrieve data.” Payroll level Dec. 04 (132266000) minus payroll level Dec 03 (130035000)= 2231000, or 2.23 million. In the campaign they claimed yet-to-be released revisions from BLS for the extras. Like presuming a teacher is going to re-grade your test from a C to an A. Having won, I woulda thought they would stop lying. What was I thinking…
“We have no desire to dominate, no ambitions of empire. Our aim is a democratic peace.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:29 am“Decisions children now make can affect their health and character for the rest of their lives.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:42 am“[T]he whole world now knows that a small group of extremists will not overturn the will of the Iraqi people.”
Whew–that’s a relief! I was really starting to worry about that “small group of extremists” we know as Neocons. I’m glad to hear that the Iraqi people will prevail in the last reel.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:47 amI just read the whole list, and I am most impressed with your observation.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:59 am“I am a liar, a thief, a dolt, a shill for any lobby and am completely immoral.” Are these supposed to be 16 words you heard or words that you should have heard ? Sorry, 18 words.
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:01 am“we must free small businesses from needless regulation and protect honest job-creators from junk lawsuits”
Of course! Why would we want to regulate businesses or hold them accountable? How can he reconcile this with what he claimed earlier, that he “prosecuted corporate criminals”, as one of his accomplishments?
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:12 amin the year 2027, the government will somehow have to come up with an extra 200 billion dollars to keep the system afloat
Once more, everyone, Of Course! Why would we want to do that in 2027when we could spend 2 trillion now instead?
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:21 am>>>Today, Iran remains the world’s primary state sponsor of terror – pursuing nuclear weapons while depriving its people of the freedom they seek and deserve.< <<<
Hey, if you subed the “n” for a “q”… wouldn’t you say that we’ve heard this exact sentence before?
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:46 amIf you subed the “n” for “q” the statement above sounds very familiar, almost verbatum…
I was playing the drinking game too… with the added bonus to make out with the person next to me if Bush mentioned OSAMA! Darn, another missed opportunity to score big! Damn you Bush!
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:15 am“Because a society is measured by how it treats the weak and vulnerable, we must strive to build a culture of life.”
The hypocrisy in this statement, coming from a man I hold responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians plus over one thousand U.S. soldiers, is staggering.
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:32 am“Because a society is measured by how it treats the weak and vulnerable, we must strive to build a culture of life.
I’m with you, Rebecca. I about choked when I heard that one! I don’t know how he can keep a straight face and say that! Well, actually, he probably has absolutely no idea what he is saying, doesn’t give a s**t, and had to practice that speech for days in order to get the longer words right. What a vile, moronic, ignorant excuse of a “leader”.
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:47 amBarry is the classic example of why your party is a bunch of losers. Though at least he has the guts to admit he is a piece of crap hypocrite who doesn’t care what Bush does, just that it is Bush doing it. Bush could save a baby from drowning, and Barry would claim it was a bad thing, which is Clinton threw that baby in the water, Barry would be sucking his dick and swallowing what Bill gave him. Enjoy the rest of your miserable life alone Barry. Get used to disappointment.
February 3rd, 2005 at 3:21 amPvt. Bledsoe’s above is a good choice if it turns out we’ve midwifed a civil war.
Otherwise, if any phrase nails him, it will be this:
“And best of all, the money in the account is yours, and the government can never take it away.”
This one is very specific, incredibly inflammatory for them to renege on, and a few hours before the speech, a White House official gave a briefing that made it absolutely clear they intend to do so. The first 3.00% of gains in your account belong to Uncle Sam.
February 3rd, 2005 at 4:03 amI think # 38 is pretty astounding, really. Children are not going to have any input into the decisions on Social Security and health care and foreign policy and economic policy that this man is proposing in this very speech.
But I have to say, for sheer flamboyant lie-in-your-face chutzpah, the statement of “principle” about taxpayer dollars takes the Ken Adelman cake.
February 3rd, 2005 at 6:52 amI think the 16 words are the ones that were missing. Hardly a mention of WMD (compared to 2003). Hardly a mention of Osama bin Laden. They’re trying to shift the focus.
They’re very skilled at sounding strong rhetorically without saying anything with analytical merit.
February 3rd, 2005 at 11:01 amI like this one:
“We must pass reforms that solve the financial problems of Social Security once and for all.”
I think it’ll prove to be like his dad’s “read my lips” phrase – it’s just plain wrong. These reforms will prove to be, in part, the cause of the crisis they purport to be avoiding.
February 3rd, 2005 at 11:41 am“Under the No Child Left Behind Act, standards are higher, test scores are on the rise, and (the following statement proves the fact that they are just making stuff up) we’re closing the achievement gap for minority students. ” closing the achievement gap? under this administration? what country are they living in?
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:13 pmMy nominee for the 16 words: You’ll be able to pass along the money that accumulates in your personal account, if you wish, to your children..or grandchildren. Since at least a portion of the money in your “personal” account must be used to purchase an annuity (required) and the principal in an annuity cannot be inherited, your survivors are SOL.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:18 pm“Because marriage is a sacred institution and the foundation of society, it should not be re-defined by activist judges. For the good of families, children, and society, I support a constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage.”
If Panderer-inChief succeeds in making me a Second Class citizen (re: Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell & Anti-Gay Marriage), can I assume that I will not have to pay First Class taxes? Will His Christian Righteousness propose a two-tiered tax system to justify his ignorant prejudice? Will he also be changing the constitution to outlaw divorce?
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:19 pmWe are working with European allies to make clear to the Iranian regime that it must give up its uranium enrichment program and any plutonium reprocessing, and end its support for terror.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:20 pmYour money will grow, over time, at a greater rate than anything the current system can deliver, . .
Sounds like a guaranteed return in violation of securities law. Of course, he’s violated them before.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:20 pm“We have to move ahead with courage and honesty, because our children’s retirement security is more important than partisan politics.”
As Dr. Evil says (pinky to corner of mouth), “Riiiiiiiiiiight…..”
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:21 pm“each age is a dream that is dying, or one that is coming to birth.” Translated: Freedom is dying in the US, a dictatorship has been given birth.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:21 pm16 words (exactly): “Former Congressman Tim Penny has raised the possibility of indexing benefits to prices rather than wages”
– that way, when SS benefits are decreased in the future, he can point the finger…
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:25 pmFreedom, Tyranny, Freedom, Tyranny, Freedom, Tyranny, Freedom, Tyranny, Freedom, Tyranny, Freedom, Tyranny, Freedom, Tyranny, Freedom, Tyranny(16)
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:25 pm“Because marriage is a sacred institution and the foundation of society”……..you have to be an arrogant and misogynist fool to dare suggest that you can improve something that GOD has ordained and is protected by GOD. How delusional can one be?
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:26 pm16 words:
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:28 pm“Justice is distorted, and our economy is held back by irresponsible class-actions and frivolous asbestos claims…”
Oh, is that why our economy is in the can? Gee, who knew it could be that simple.
“human life is never bought and sold as a commodity.” —-tell this to the world??
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:31 pmIt is time for an immigration policy that permits temporary guest workers to fill jobs Americans will not take, that rejects amnesty, that tells us who is entering and leaving our country and that closes the border to drug dealers and terrorists.
Okay, so it’s more than 16 words, but really – reform immigration so it benefits business but doesn’t give immigrants the path to becoming citizens. Guest workers — yeah! Amnesty — boo! Clearly this president only cares about those who speak money in this country.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:32 pm“All these ideas are on the table.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:32 pmHow about the 16 words that he DIDN’T say:
We have finally created a comprehensive and clear exit strategy for leaving the country of Iraq
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:34 pmmy 16 word nominee–we watch our children moving into adulthood, we ask the question:What will be the state of their union?
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:35 pm“…we will make it easier for Americans to afford a college education, by increasing the size of Pell Grants.” I agree with many of the suggestions above, but this one is also a most dubious lie…as the size of the grants went south last year. Even if he made ‘em bigger, would they be as big as they once were?
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:35 pm“”In a whirlwind of change and hope and peril, our faith is sure, our resolve is firm, and our union is strong. ”
Being split in half is strong?
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:36 pmAlthough this was not said by Bush, his proposed programs, if enacted, sound the death knell for the Middle Class and the return of a feudal society where only the serfs pay taxes. His biggest lie was “…we must be good stewards of this economy, and renew the great institution on which millions of our fellow Americans rely.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:38 pmDo not let anyone mislead you; for you, the Social Security system will not change in any way. (18 words)
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:39 pm“Culture of Life”-
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:39 pmWe killed already by our unilateral optional aggression in Iraq after deceiving the nation into war under completely fraudulent pretexts a number of troops equal to half the number killed in 9-11, and over a hundred-thousand innocent Iraqis in the way. What is “Democracy” when it involves slaughtering the opposition before the vote? I suppose that’s one way to have a Democracy- just eliminate all opposition.
Now we are looking at “standing with” those in Iran and Syria who want our version of “Democracy” circularly reasoned to mean, only after we slaughter those who won’t “stand with us.”
Not exactly a quote but–The absurd claim that the Busheviks are concerned with saving young people from a bankrupt program when they’ve already piled a mountain of debt on future generations!
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:40 pm“Four years is enough talk” (about making us energy independent from Foreign Oil)-
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:43 pmSo why did you do something about it four years ago instead of serve the oil profiteering with a completely illegitimate war that served mostly to double the P/E ratio of Connoco Philips?
“Now we need to focus on giving young people, especially young men in our cities, better options than apathy, or gangs, or jail. ”
Uh oh…guess who’s going to be colonizing Mars?
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:44 pm“I urge Congress to pass legislation that makes America more secure and less dependent on foreign energy.”
Can he be serious? Did Cheney’s secret energy committee approve this statement?
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:44 pm“And to the Iranian people, I say tonight: As you stand for your own liberty, America stands with you.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:46 pmThis pinacle of arrogance, speaking directly to the people of another nation, will come down on him…and, likely, us as well.
As a new Congress gathers, all of us in the elected branches of government share a great privilege: we have been placed in office by the votes of the people we serve. “
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:52 pm“…[blank frozen stare at the mother who lost her son hugging the woman whose father was killed by Saddam…….”
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:52 pmThe best moment was speechless; because as Republicans (Bush I) originally propped up and legitimized Saddam and provided him initially with arms- even of the mass murder capability kind, both women, directly or indirectly lost their relatives by the direct or indirect actions of our Foreign policy, and more specificially by the Bush Family. I wonder if it hit him.
After Afghanistan, Iraq, an reinstating the global gag rule abroad, I just don’t buy GWB promoting “an ideal of manhood that respects women and rejects violence” at home.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:55 pmThe words that got me were: “We will help an additional 200,000 workers to get training for a better career.” As far as what I have heard, thos 200,00 workers had great jobs and were dismissed because of Bush’s economy. We had trained workers to do a great job. What makes him the expert on saying that our workers need more of a education … it obviously didn’t work for him … experience is the best teacher.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:57 pmThis disingenious double talk comes from the man, and I mean THE Man, who has overseen the four largest budget deficits in our nation’s history. WE are the fools and deserve everything we get… because we are actually paying this man’s salary to LIE to us.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:58 pmClearly Bush thinks he can apply his Iraq “WMD” strategy to his effort to destroy Social Security – Words of Mass Deception!
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:59 pmMy Clear Skies legislation will cut power plant pollution and improve the health of our citizens.
February 3rd, 2005 at 12:59 pmI could not bear to watch the address, but I have just read the list, and I was very drawn to:”Decisions children now make can affect their health and character for the rest of their lives.” Before the presidential election, my 10 year old granddaughter, who was then studying about this at school, told me on several occasions that she thought young kids (like her) should be allowed to vote because they were the ones who would be here to live with the results. once again, “out of the mouths of babes………”
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:02 pmWhat he didn’t say that will come back to haunt him:
Eroding dollar.
Lack of prestige in world
Stagnation of job market
Unaffordable health care.
Record # filing for bankruptacy
650 billion balance of payment deficit
427 billion projected federal deficit
US. household deficit at 10 trillion.
Sorry to have exceeded the l6 words..But these
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:06 pmas the spouse of a teacher – find one who supports NCLBA and puts stock in these comments…
“test scores are on the rise, and we are closing the achievement gap for minority students.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:07 pmWe should all be able to agree on some clear standards.
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:12 pmDo not let anyone mislead you. For you, the Social Security system will not change in any way.
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:13 pm“we must never turn away from any citizen who feels isolated from the opportunities of America.”(16) (Guantanamo much)
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:13 pm“we need to make sure Americans of all races and backgrounds have confidence in the system that provides justice.” (19)(if our next attorney general is anything like the last, well then, let the eagle soar!)
Pandering to part of the Democrats’ traditional base? “focus on giving young people, especially young men in our cities, better options than apathy, or gangs, or jail” And how, exactly?
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:13 pm“Home ownership is the largest it has ever been. Of course you fool, ever since home ownership records have been kept every year after to present they have grown.Did it ever occur to him that our population is the largest it has ever been
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:15 pmJust about all of Bush’s State of the Union would qualify. I finally settled on this statement as the most egregious.
” Nearly four years ago, I submitted a comprehensive energy strategy that encourages conservation, alternative sources, a modernized electricity grid, and more production here at home, including safe, clean nuclear energy. My Clear Skies legislation will cut power plant pollution and improve the health of our citizens. And my budget provides strong funding for leading-edge technology – from hydrogen-fueled cars, to clean coal, to renewable sources such as ethanol.”
There is not one word of truth in any of that statement.
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:16 pmSandra
WMD no longer stands for Weapons of Mass Destruction, i feel it should stand for “W’s Mass Decieving” of the American Public
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:20 pmThis is one of the most intellectually gifted presidents we’ve ever had.
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:20 pm(Oh, wait, that was last week…)
“In the next four years, my administration will continue to build the coalitions that will defeat the dangers of our time”
Although this is more then 16 words, it’s very egregious.
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:21 pm[the united states]has no right, no desire, and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else.
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:25 pm“To keep our economy growing, we also need reliable supplies of affordable, environmentally responsible energy.” (Close, 15 words)
Hah, this on the heels of the govement saying they want to do exploratory drilling on the thousands of acres on Alaska’s North Slope that have been protected for decades because they are home to migratory birds and caribou.
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:29 pmHow about something he should have said ” I AM REALLY THE ANTI-CHRIST – Let no others go before me.”
At least he wouldn’t be lying then.
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:30 pm3 words “Culture of Life” he said it constantly on the campaign trail. Google those words and you’ll see exactly who he’s speaking to. I also found the marriage ammendment comments troubling but not suprising. Help………
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:35 pmIt’s not 16 words but it’s priceless anyway:
“The war goes on, and we are winning.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:38 pmHere’s another beaut:
“Today, Iran remains the world’s primary state sponsor of terror — pursuing nuclear weapons while depriving its people of the freedom they seek and deserve.”
Uh oh, this sounds very much like the swill that was fed to us about Saddam, WMD and yellow cake.
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:42 pmDidn’t listen to the speech. I’m tired of being lied to. Can’t make up my mind on which statement will come back to haunt him, but these are all good:
“The United States has no right, no desire, and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else.”
“Because a society is measured by how it treats the weak and vulnerable, we must strive to build a culture of life.
“We have no desire to dominate, no ambitions of empire. Our aim is a democratic peace.
“We must pass reforms that solve the financial problems of Social Security once and for all.
The United States has no right, no desire, and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else.
“Our men and women in uniform are fighting terrorists in Iraq, so we do not have to face them here at home”.
“The principle here is clear: a taxpayer dollar must be spent wisely, or not at all. “
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:50 pm“Because one of the deepest values of our country is compassion, we must never turn away from any citizen who feels isolated from the opportunities of America.”
(unless you’re gay)
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:51 pm“The United States has no right, no desire, and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else.”
I await my stylish American Progress vest.
February 3rd, 2005 at 1:58 pmWe must pass reforms that solve the financial problems of Social Security once and for all.
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:05 pm16 words I’d LIKE to see:
I’m completely overwhelmed and can’t follow the instructions given to me every day, so I’m retiring.
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:08 pmRead the comments, did not want to see him speak. I keep waiting for the child to say, “but Daddy, the emperor has no clothes”
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:15 pmIt’s only fourteen words, but I nominate: “We have been placed in office by the votes of the people we serve.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:19 pmQuestion? Will the 1 trillion dollar short fall of funds going into the S.S. system eventually jeprodize those 55 and older and bring a break even date even closer?
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:22 pm“…and show young men an ideal of manhood that respects women and rejects violence.”
…unless you’re the President, then you can do whatever you want regarding women’s reproductive rights and declaring war on terror
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:36 pmRefused to watch, due to allergy to mendacity. I wholeheartedly agree with the identification of W as the Anti-Christ. Quintessentially evil.
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:44 pmIf Bush thinks that the problem is that our Social Seurity surplus is being loaned to the governement at a low rate why doesn’t he pay what the money is worth. How much is he paying China? Does he feel that the likes of Enron or Merrill Lynch do better for us?
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:47 pmThe moment I heard “Clear Skies Initiative,” an involuntary scream left my lips! How I wish someone in the audience had had a similar loud reaction to the amazing distortions he spooned out so glibly. Forget sneakin banners in – just open up your mouth and scream! Could it be that hard?
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:47 pmI posted last night but it didn’t get on for some reason. Here is my 16 words:
“We will not set an artificial timetable for leaving Iraq, because that would embolden the terrorists…” add on these:
“…and make them believe they can wait us out. We are in Iraq to achieve a result: A country that is democratic, representative of all its people, at peace with its neighbors, and able to defend itself”
and we’ll all go to DisneyWorld to celebrate.
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:49 pmFreedom in Iraq will make America safer for generations to come
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:49 pmI did hear some loud screams during the Social Security part. I hope they were from Democrats yelling him down. I also noticed that one whole side of the House didn’t stand or applaud. All we need to do is get back the majority in each house.
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:52 pm“…I thank the Congress for providing our servicemen and women with the resoureces they have needed.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:54 pm“The United States has no right, no desire, and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 2:56 pm“my” 16 (13) words are
February 3rd, 2005 at 3:00 pm“we must find practical controls over blind economic forces and blindly selfish men”
We’ve been placed in office by the votes of the people we serve
February 3rd, 2005 at 3:05 pmBarbara – not to flame, but who is “we?” I’m a Green! I definitely wouldn’t mind “we” having a majority in the House and Senate! And oh, how well-behaved even our Democrats are. Just like being in church.
February 3rd, 2005 at 3:08 pmI vote for
I vote for
I vote for #25 & 26
February 3rd, 2005 at 3:36 pm“… the state of our union is confident and strong.”
…but is it SOUND?
February 3rd, 2005 at 3:48 pmMy nomination for “16 words,” is : “We’ll make sure your earnings are not eaten up by hidden Wall Street fees.” THIS IS A LIE – HE WANTS TO DESTROY OUR ONLY TRULY EFFECTIVE UNIVERSAL SOCIAL PROGRAM.
February 3rd, 2005 at 3:54 pmYou´v got to love, “We will pass along to our children all our freedoms. . .especially the freedom from fear.” When his whole modus operandi is fear. Ran Horn of Van Horn TX
February 3rd, 2005 at 4:01 pmThe Deficit is a hoax. We need to print money and cut taxes. To balance the budget would stranglr\e the economy and wreck the country
February 3rd, 2005 at 4:07 pm“We will not set an artificial timetable for leaving Iraq, because . . . I’ve got no freaking idea what’s going on over there.”
But, hell, if you wanna timetable, I’ll give you one–uhhhh . . . September 31, 2003. There. Ya happy?
You want some wood?
February 3rd, 2005 at 4:35 pm“We are in Iraq to achieve a result: A country that is democratic, representative of all its people …… ”
What about a democratic, representative country, here in the United States, wherein “ALL OF OUR VOTES COUNT!” It was not until early 2004 that money was released to get the voting system started. OHIO, OHIO, OHIO was stolen. We need to depose the secretary of state of Ohio and get him under oath. Bet he wouldn’t do it.
February 3rd, 2005 at 4:41 pm“And to the Iranian people, I say tonight: As you stand for your own liberty, America stands with you.” (Translated: “Watch out, Iranian People. Here we come!”)
February 3rd, 2005 at 4:53 pmNearly four years ago, I submitted a comprehensive energy strategy that encourages conservation, alternative sources
February 3rd, 2005 at 4:58 pm” ..the money in the account is yours and the government can never take it away.”
But that is exactly what the government did to the Social Security system. Social Security isn’t failing, the elected thieves robbed the surplus.
February 3rd, 2005 at 5:12 pm“After careful review of all the over 1,000 pages of evidence submitted by the Fraud-buster Four attorneys in the Ohio Supreme Court Election Challenge litigation in response to the vindictive partisan hackish sanctions motions filed by the criminal Secretary of State of Ohio, I conclude that the people of Ohio did in fact elect John Kerry, not me, and thus the 20 Electoral votes from Ohio were improperly and fraudulently awarded to my ticket. Thus, I cannot in good conscience continue to deceive the American people and remain in office as the illegitimately declared victor of the Nov. 2, 2004 Election and I am submitting my resignation to Chief Justice Rehnquist with apologies that I made him get out of bed during his treatment on that freezing Inaguration Day which will go down in historical infamy as the biggest Con ever pulled by the RNC. ”
February 3rd, 2005 at 5:15 pm…..and then someone splashed cold water on my face and I woke up.
“The British Government has learned that by 2042 the American social security system will be exhausted and bankrupt”. Okay, maybe he didn’t actually say that, but who can doubt that this year’s rationale for acting on social security will soon be as discredited and irrelevant as WMDs?
February 3rd, 2005 at 5:39 pmThe problem is that the words from the Bush Administration never come back to haunt them; they come back to haunt U.S. citizens and the world.
February 3rd, 2005 at 5:41 pm“There are still governments that sponsor and harbor terrorists — but their number has declined.” (14 words) I think he will find that number increasing by at least 1 – Iraq.
February 3rd, 2005 at 6:13 pm“As President, I have a constitutional responsibility to nominate men and women who understand the role of courts in our democracy, and are well-qualified to serve on the bench — and I have done so.”
Absolutely. Using your position as a judge to assist cross burners is what the role of courts in our democracy is all about. Keep up the good work:(
February 3rd, 2005 at 6:21 pmI too read the comments here before thoroughly reading the transcript because I could not bear to watch him last night.
February 3rd, 2005 at 6:31 pmThe most heartening words to come out of the evening were, “No, NO, no …” coming from the Democratic side of the aisle. They tell me that there is indeed hope for the salvation of the republic! < *G*>
“The advance of freedom will lead to peace”
You are not free to determine your own peace; we will do it for you. Non-reality.
February 3rd, 2005 at 7:16 pmThe United States has no right, no desire and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else.
Wow, really? I thought we just did that.
February 3rd, 2005 at 7:17 pm“Because one of the main sources of our national unity is our belief in equal justice…”
It won’t haunt BushCo but it sure as hell haunts anyone with a moral compass.
February 3rd, 2005 at 7:20 pmHe used a lot of words to say nothing at all. I guess they figured out if you are vague enough about your plans, then nobody can cite specific examples of promises ignored.
February 3rd, 2005 at 7:21 pmAnyway, I’m thinking the Saudi connection is about to boil over. He just never learns, everyone he points out as a shining example of something turns ugly. He said great things about Chalabi, that didn’t work out so well. Then the fine upstanding Kerik, oh whoops, nanny trouble there. Bush wants us to have the first pro-torture Attorney General. The list goes on. But the haunting words of the day:
[The government of] Saudi Arabia can demonstrate its leadership in the region by expanding the role of its people [in determining their future.]
Leadership, eh? Lets see what we can find about Saudi leadership:
1. Women’s exclusion from elections undermines progress
2. Crackdown on demonstrators deals another blow to human rights
3. Saudi Arabia’s criminal justice system facilitates torture. a range of punishments, from long prison sentences to amputation, flogging and beheading, after trials that make a mockery of justice.
4. In general, members of the royal family and other powerful families were not subject to the same rule of law as ordinary citizens.
[sources there were not just amnesty international, but our own department of state]
Once again, Bush has picked out a real shining example of leadership.
“… Justice is distorted and our economy
is held back by irresponsible class actions and frivolous asbestos claims.”
Asbestos claims against Haliburton??? So THAT’S the problem with our economy.
February 3rd, 2005 at 7:28 pm“Because one of the main sources of our national unity is our belief in equal justice…”
These words won’t come back to haunt BushCo but they sure as hell haunt anyone with a moral compass.
February 3rd, 2005 at 7:29 pm… the money in the account is yours, and the government can never take it away.
Fifteen words: false, since Bush never explained “clawback.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 7:46 pm…your account will provide money for retirement over and above the check you will receive from Social Security.
Okay, that’s 18 words to make it sound like the private accounts are an add-on, rather than a pretext for benefit reduction — not to mention the failure to mention the possibility of investment loss.
February 3rd, 2005 at 7:50 pmWe are witnessing landmark events in the history of libery and in the coming of the years we will add to that story. . ”
So we are going to invade Iran?
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:07 pmI think appointing laura Bush to head up a program to stop young people from joining gangs is going to come back to haunt him
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:14 pmRe: #11 – not only do Federal Employees have a Thrift Savings Plan but most State/Municipal employees do as well. It might not be called Thrift Savings – I work for NY State & it’s called Deferred Comp – but yes we are still entitled to full Social Security benefits. Unless Bush gets his way & f**ks it up for all of us
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:17 pmOur society has changed in ways the founders of Social Security could not have foreseen. . . .We must pass reforms that solve the financial problems of Social Security once and for all.
According to Bush illogic. – Our Society will never again have a cultural change. His highness will create the zenith of Social Security ONCE AND FOR ALL.
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:18 pmlet us do what Americans have always done and build a better world for our children and our grandchildren.”
I think Bush is brain damaged from his cocaine and drinking days. Running up the debt, decreasing the value of the dollar, dismanteling medicare and trying to destroy SS AND destroying the environment is not the way to pave a better future for out kids and grandkids.
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:23 pmSoon I will send to Congress a proposal to fund special training for defense counsel in capital cases because people on trial for their lives must have competent lawyers by their side.
Is this to make up for Alberto Gonzales and the many rush to judgement executions in Texas as Gov.?
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:24 pm“focus on giving young men in our cities, better options than apathy or gangs or jail.”
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:24 pma military job in iraq?
We must work together to fund only our most important priorities. I will send you a budget that increases discretionary spending by 4 percent next year — about as much as the average family’s income is expected to grow. And that is a good benchmark for us. Federal spending should not rise any faster than the paychecks of American families.
Okay..it’s more than 16 words but I just have to say that I work for New York State and wish that my paycheck was going to increase 4% this year. The State gave us a very “generous” 1 1/2% AND increased our health care co-pays.
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:27 pmAmerica will stand with the allies of freedom to support democratic movements in the Middle East and beyond, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world.
A little “messianic” flavor here. My Bible tells me to put my trust in God and not in men. Thinking people must unite and stop this madness
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:29 pmin the year 2027, the government will somehow have to come up with an extra 200 billion dollars to keep the system afloat.
After calling us the tax and spend liberals for so many years, they are exposing themselves as the BORROW AND SPEND REPUBLICANS (and hide our head in the sand about consequences and repayment). They warn us the sky is falling so they can borrow and spend many times the amount the system is likely to be short. They could just put this money in the system. It would be cheaper. The state of the system will depend on many unpredictable economic circumstances that will occur between now and then. Social Security was created in the wake of the depression when the market crashed and people lost everything including any private accounts they had. Social Security is a government program because private investment left us destitute. His policy will leave us with less than nothing, especially when we are borrowing from the very countries likely to overtake us economically (we will fall behind because of the lack of investment in training and education for our young people, who will in their retirement years likely be taking jobs outsourced from India).
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:30 pmWe have the terrorists on the run. We’re keeping them on the run. One by one, the terrorists are learning the meaning of American justice.
Ohhh so that explains why Ossama bin Laden hasn’t been caught yet. And can someone tell me where in America justice is meted out such as was seen in Abu Gharaib and Guantanamo (sorry – I might’ve spelled them wrong)???
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:35 pmThis is a fun game and all, but isn’t it just so sad that if Senator Kerry would have learned to speak in simple declarative statements like W, he’d be president and not him?
February 3rd, 2005 at 8:38 pm“…Iranian people, I say tonight: As you stand for your own liberty, America stands with you.” (truncated to 16 words) – According to a Christian Science Monitor posting of 12/31/03, the trial of Saddam may reveal embarrassing secrets: such as the US’s potential involvement in the death of Taleb al Suhail al Tamimi – Safia al Suhail’s father (yes, Safia of SOTU ‘05 fame). An allegation of Nora al Tamimi, Safia’s sister, claims the US not only failed to stand in support of a coup against Hussein in ‘93, we actively took steps to quash it by tipping off Hussein and turning over names.
February 3rd, 2005 at 9:30 pm“A taxpayer dollar must be spent wisely or not at all.” Tell that to Paul Bremer who has no idea where 9 billion taxpayer dollars have gone in Iraq and ask Armstrong Williams what he is doing with his payola from the Department of Education.
February 3rd, 2005 at 9:37 pmMy Clear Skies legislation will cut power plant pollution and improve the health of our citizens.
there are so many that should haunt the moron, but this is a great oxymoron the moron espouses. Wheew!
February 3rd, 2005 at 9:38 pm“…the commitment of our Nation … liberty … terrorists … war … security … peace … terror … terror … terror … violence … failure … freedom …”

Guess who’s asbestos claims he’s talking about…HALIBURTON/KBR

“We have to move ahead with courage and honesty.”
An instant classic.
February 3rd, 2005 at 11:36 pmI will work with Congress to ensure that . . . life is never bought and sold as a commodity.
February 3rd, 2005 at 11:54 pm“For the good of families, children, and society, I support a constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage.”
February 4th, 2005 at 12:03 amwhich really means….”So that the Right Wing Christians will lie for me about Social Security, I support a constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage even though I know that it has zero chance of passing.”
#106 says it all.
February 4th, 2005 at 12:37 am“In the long-term, the peace we seek will only be achieved by eliminating the conditions that feed radicalism and ideologies of murder.” For FDR advised:So it was natural and perfectly human that the privileged princes of these new economic dynasties, thirsting for power, reached out for control over government itself. They created a new despotism…wrapped it in the robes of legal sanction.
February 4th, 2005 at 12:55 amMY two favorites, one is 11 words, the 2nd is 19.
“America’s prosperity requires restraining the spending appetite of the federal government.” ( 2.3 trillion “lost” out of the Pentagon in 2002, 9 billion “lost” in Iraq, $23 billion stolen out of Iraq’s bank accounts, and or course the $200 billion in no bids and other expenditures, the $880 million “lost” by Halliburton. And best of all, the new $388 billion intelligence bill passed for this year.
“The United States has no right, no desire, and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else”
February 4th, 2005 at 1:35 amTo paraphrase a famous Psychologist in the ’20’s regarding Sigmund Freud: “Mr Bush, in his address, focussed attention on many points which were new and many which were good. Unfortunately, those which were good were not new and those which were new were not good.”

Barry is the classic example of why your party is a bunch of losers.

My comment:
February 4th, 2005 at 1:55 amdusty’s comment appear, to me, to be a measurement of his/her close relationship to the president’s rationalization for anything (right or wrong). Notice dusty’s almost uncontrollable anger and frighteningly crude ability to express him/herself. I come from a conservative Virginia family that, like dusty, understands little about the politics of our country and cannot see beyond next payday or, to be benevolent, beyond next year. Don’t give a gun to someone like dusty. Don’t give authority to someone like dusty. The result is, someone like President Bush.
Like Steve K (#113) I could not bering myself to watch Bush’s SOTU. That is the reason I cannot enter your contest, but a mer T-shirt is not enough incentive to watch the SOTU. I read all the comments and found them all worthy of winning. Good luck to all. Shirley C (a proud Liberal).
February 4th, 2005 at 7:34 amLess than a day after President Bush declared he was “working with European allies” to persuade Iran to give up its nuclear program, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the United States would continue to rebuff European requests to participate directly in offering incentives for Iran to drop what is suspected of being a nuclear arms program.
See my entry #56
February 4th, 2005 at 8:13 amNot what was said, but what was done? “doesn`t it just make you sick when politicians can use a sad situation for photo op. They say no colusion, but the Iranian woman and the marine mother were asked to be there. How many members in that house really know what those people are experiencing. Not many, I would think.
February 4th, 2005 at 10:01 amMy favorite “We must make the Afghan Women free” gets me when Bush wants to take women down here by getting rid of legal abortion.
February 4th, 2005 at 10:53 amAlthough I did not watch him because I can’t look at his smug face, my favorites are:
“I thank the Congress for providing our service men and women with the resources they need”
February 4th, 2005 at 11:05 am(except for the Humvees)
“a society is measured by how it treats the weak and vulnerable”
(except for the poor, the homeless, and the hungry)
This one could come back to bite George W.:
“And to the Iranian people, I say tonight: As you stand for your own liberty, America stands with you.”
February 4th, 2005 at 1:33 pmHow about Gangsta Laura Bush chillin’ with her dawgz? For sheer irony, I like this W quote:
…show young men an ideal of manhood that respects women and rejects violence
This is more fun than the Name That Bush Scandal Contest!
February 4th, 2005 at 2:59 pmI’m with Rebecca (post 46), thought the extent of his hypocrisy goes way beyond Iraq. This is a man with general contempt for the lives or health of our own citizens. Not sure what the purchase price of his mother would be, but the rest of us sell very cheaply indeed.
February 4th, 2005 at 6:05 pm“Our country is still the target of terrorists who want to kill many and intimidate us all”
I wonder if he ever wonders why?
KLL, Certified Certifiable
February 4th, 2005 at 7:02 pmDo not let anyone mislead you; for you, the Social Security system will not change in any way
February 5th, 2005 at 5:47 amComment 87 and 136 best describes my point of view. For every Bushie plan, the U.S. taxpayer will be left holding the bag. NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION! Sound familiar? Let us never forget GWB is a politician, led by his politician surrogates, never was and never will be a world leader, but America’s embarassment.
February 5th, 2005 at 3:27 pmWHAT DOES BUSH THINK WE HAVE BEEN DOING FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS BUT IMPOSING OUR FORM OF GOVERNMENT ON IRAQ? ALSO HOW FUNNY THAT HE IS GOING TO SEND THE FIRST LADY DOWN TO THE HOOD TO GET REAL WITH THE HOMEBOYS.
February 6th, 2005 at 1:54 amTo all republicans. You have deserted your country for your political party. It’s a sad time for America and the world when we as nation are represented by such a greedy self loving incompetent . Take heed to the quote, “if his gums are bumping with utterances, he’s lying.”

He was poisoned to death by his business associates on one of their outings on a business trip. my mother died when i am a baby. Before the death of my father on August year. 2004 in a private hospital here in Abidjan, he secretly called me by his bed side and tell me that he has the sum of Eight million two hundred and thousand United State Dollars USD ($8.200,000) deposited in a suspense account in one of the big banks here in Abidjan.
He told me that he used my name as the next of Kin in depositing the money. He then strongly advised me not to seek for assistance in the investment of the money from his lawyer nor any of
his friend here but to seek for a foreign partner from a country of my choice (outside our country,Cote D’Ivoire) that willl assist me in the wise investment of the money. since the money in the bank with the view of making use of it for investment purposes after my education carrier
here. But as you may be already aware by now, our country (Cote D’Ivoire) is presently at political crises. Rebels have already taken over the whole Northern part of the country and making efforts towards the capture of the commercial center of the country, Abidjan, For this urgly development in this country, now decided to take quick actions and have this money transferred out of this country before it is too late to do that. now i want to transfer it out and use it for
investment purpose like real estate management or hotel management.
Because of this i honorably seeking your assistance in the following ways:
(1) To serve as a guardian to me and then assist me transfer the money into your bank account. (2) To make arrangement for me to come over to your country to further my education and then settle there parmanently.
If you accept to stand as my guardian or foster parent to me, need not discuss on any percentage with you as you have to see the whole money as yours and then assist me invest it. But if you still want a percentage, willing to offer you, 20 % of the total money as compensation for
your assistance. Please tell me if you feel the percentage i offered is not ok by you.
As soon as i receive your concrete assurance to assist me with the proposal and also your full contact address/phone number, i will then give the bank your contact information and then tell them to transfer the money into your account as i want to come over to stay with you parmanently.
The bank will then contact you and communicate with you on the transfer. You shall then be giving me information on when the transfer will be over.i shall also send picture to you and shall also need yours too.
No matter what your decision may turn out to be, please i beg you to keep this highly secret for my safety, as i believe that those that killed my father are still after me. please contact me in this email

[...] I have really tried to avoid as much information about the State of the Union Address as I could. I decided that anything Bush said would make me nuts. Of course, the drawback to this is that if I don’t know what he is planning, I will be even more nuts when he does it.Fortunately for me, there is the site ThinkProgress.com, which not only includes the full text of the State of the Union, but also footnotes everyplace where President Bush lies or misleads the American people. For example:President Bush said: “During this time of war, we must continue to support our military and give them the tools for victory.”FACT: In December, a soldier serving in Iraq asked why he had to “dig through local land fills” to find scrap metal to properly arm his military combat vehicle. Rumsfeld’s response? “You have to go to war with the Army you have.”FACT: Soldiers in Iraq have been forced to buy their own body armor and armor their own vehicles. Many guardsman claim they were not adequately trained.I only point out this one little thing to whet your appetite. The complete list is actually very entertaining and a nice reality check. They also have a contest happening through today to determine which 16 words from the speech will come back to haunt Bush.I think the thing that I want to point out here is that, despite some excellent theatrical moments, Bush did his best to come out strong in favor of ruining the country in nearly everyway he could. The hug between the Iraqi voter and the mother of the dead soldier? Touching, but, if I can make an analogy, if President Bush took a huge dump all over your living room, this was like him putting a cute little puppy in front of the turd in the hopes that this would distract you from the stinking mess.So I say to you, oh seven or eight readers of Teh BFJ who do not write for it, now is not the time to ignore the foul stench! Now is the time to start spraying it with the disinfectent of freedom and common sense. For example, Bush supports the idea that the only form of sex ed taught in schools should be abstinence. As it turns out, “abstinence-only sex education programs, a major plank in President George W. Bush’s education plan, have had no impact on teenagers’ behavior in his home state of Texas.” Why don’t we start by kicking his ass on this one and work up to taking out his plan to rape Social Security by March? [...]
