Jeff Gannon Jr.

Jeff Gannon Jr.

According to the transcript of today’s White House Briefing, a “reporter” named John had this Gannon-like intro to his question:

Q You talked about sanctions against Iran if they don’t comply with dismantling their nuclear energy program. Sanctions, in the past, have proven to be a joke — that they didn’t work against Iraq…

Of course, according to the administration’s handpicked weapons inspector, David Kay, that’s untrue:

“Iraq’s large-scale capability to develop, produce, and fill new chemical weapon munitions was reduced – if not entirely destroyed – during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Fox, 13 years of UN sanctions and UN inspections.”

Atrios noted a similar incident last Wednesday.

Are the briefings filmed? Is there any way to ascertain who that reporter is?

  2. Josh Koenig says:

Seems a bit ridiculous that we don’t keep track of who asks the questions at these things. Sound to me like something the Public has a right to know.

  3. Jeff says:

You’d think. However, this White House is VERY controlling of the information. Hitler would be proud. I wouldn’t be surprised if the entire charade is scripted now that Bush completely melted down during that conference last year that made him look like he needed cue cards. What was that about, anyway? I forget.

Anyway, can we start making an issue of fluff reporters being planted in the briefings for use in elections? I’m sure the “propaganda” angle, if exploited, would resonate with a good number of voters.

There is a video at the top of the White House link, but you only get to see ‘lil scotties mug the whole time. You can hear John’s voice, but I didn’t recognize it. He badgers scotty pretty good though, which makes me think he isn’t in the same leauge as the bulldog.

  5. Boleslaw Schlabatinskyskya says:

Of course, my comments aren’t all BS, but in case you think they are, that’s my alias — and my middle name is “authorized personnel” so I can go through doors claiming that I am, indeed, “Authorized”.

Most of the press conferences are broadcast by C-Span. Of course, anytime things occur that place the administration in a bad light, the negative aspects seem to disappear from the recorded video that may be downloaded. But that’s purely a coincidence, I’m sure.

Have you guys heard about this?!?-

From the website The Conservative Voice.com and the msnbc show Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

    By Roderick Oglethorpe

John Aravosis at AMERICAblog.org has dug up seven websites where Jeff Gannon / James Guckert offers himself for sale as an “escortâ€?. Here is some mild text from one page “Ex-USMC Jock: Available for hourly, overnight, weekend or longer travel – OUT ONLY!”

Personal Trainer: Safe-Sane-Strenuous-Satisfying workouts, Sports training, and competition, especially wrestling….

Big SPORTS Fan: Will go to the game with you, then take you home and….

“AGGRESIVE, VERBAL, DOMINANT TOP. I DON’T LEAVE MARKS….ONLY IMPRESSIONS.” Aravosis’s article contains particulars on what “servicesâ€? he offered, how much he charged, links to x-rated pictures of him, and Guckert’s non-denials of any of this information.

One part in this story that has yet to surface is related to “Gannonâ€?’s claim in his bio to have “taught in the public school system”. Since Guckert’s degree from West Chester University of Pennsylvania is in Physical Education, he presumably was a gym teacher. Many parents will be unhappy that boys’ gym was taught by a gay prostitute that likes to wrestle, even if they can accept a discretely gay English teacher.

The bigger question is how did “Gannon gain inside access to the White House only five days after Talon News Service was established? Was that long enough to run a background check? Did he have inside help? Did an earlier background check only turn up the problem that it would not look good if he were reporting for GOPUSA?

Finally there are the blackmail questions which exist for gays who are not “out of the closet. Was Guckert blackmailing someone associated with the White House? Was somebody blackmailing Guckert or using Guckert’s services to blackmail someone else?

“Gannon definitely got special treatment from the White House. So far the White House has denied this, saying anybody in a similar position could get daily press passes. Refusing to acknowledge his special treatment only leads to speculation that blackmail is somehow involved.

the White House press briefings are aired on C-Span and can be reviewed at C-Span.org
Although, the reporters are not always shown when asking questions, there are pull-back shots that clearly show all in the room.

    Have a great day,

    DB

  8. Kenneth Fair says:

Even more ridiculous was the follow-up question which stated:

This administration is not happy with the leader of the IAEA, and they’re not happy right now with Kofi Annan at the U.N. So those two bodies that will be putting pressure on Iran have a credibility problem right now, as well.

They have a credibility problem merely because this Administration is unhappy with them? If anything, doesn’t that make them more credible?

  9. Patrick Madden says:

From Froomkin’s list of White House correspondants:
    John Roberts CBS
    John King CNN
    John F. Dickerson TIME
    John D. McKinnon WSJ
I’m assuming that these are only correspondants who have permanent passes. Find the “John” who got a daily pass.

  10. Andy C. says:

“Jeff’s” post from yesterday makes a very valid connection to Nazi propaganda techniques. Between “Gannongate”, and the recent executive agency payouts to media figures for shilling the Administration’s positions on education and marriage (others to be discovered?), one wonders how long before Bush names Karl Rove to command a newly created cabinet position of “Minister of Propaganda”. Indeed, one can compare a speech delivered by Goebbels in 1934 with the Rove-orchestrated conservative strategy that’s been [successfully] building steam since their lessons from Goldwater. Aside from temporal discrepancies and substitutions of conservative capitalism for National Socialism, there hardly seems to be much of a difference in tactics between Goebbels and Rove. See for yourself:

    http://www.calvin.edu/academic/cas/gpa/goeb59.htm

In any event, the application of such propaganda techniques seems to have been somewhat successful for each of its purveyors – if only for a limited time, and independent of questions of human worthiness. And, both the Nazis and the Bush administration have demonstrated an inclination to combine official secrecy with ideological propaganda to push the limit of ever egregious intents in controlling public understanding of government action (though, understand I am speaking strictly of their similarity in terms of tactical application, and not strategic outcome in relative human costs).

A profound irony here is that the major party of opposition would itself be wise to heed the lessons of Goebbels (and Rove), and quickly learn to merge their own values-based factual policy positions with a compelling narrative delivery system. Alas, in tragic irony, even Goebbels himself noted that “Good propaganda does not need to lie, indeed it may not lie. It has no reason to fear the truth.” It would then seem that were progressives to employ the same strategy used against them to instead refute radical conservative governmental hegemony, they would already have the advantage of seeking policies that are based far more on truth and integrity, and far less “divorced from reality” than policies presently flowing out of the White House.

We should constantly be reviewing our policies, constantly be looking at those sanctions to make sure that they are directed toward that purpose. That purpose is every bit as important now as it was ten years ago when we began it. And frankly they have worked. He has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors.
