Don’t like science? The Indiana legislature has the perfect solution: legislate it away.
On Wednesday, the Public Policy and Veterans Affairs Committee of the Indiana legislature approved a bill that states “a human fetus can survive outside the womb after 20 weeks of gestation.” Nevermind that it’s totally untrue. Arthur Caplan, director of the Center for Bioethics at UPenn, said “no medical experts suggest a baby born as early as 20 weeks as viable.”

I am a labor and delivery nurse. If we are unable to stop pre-term labor, and a woman delivers before 23-24 weeks, we do not even try to resuscitate the baby, it is simply not viable. But, what do you expect from anti-science republicans?
February 18th, 2005 at 2:23 pmAstonishingly enough, this is not the first time that the Indiana state legislature has tried to legislate science. In 1897, an amateur mathematician in the Indiana legislature set the mathematical constant pi (roughly 3.14) as equal to 3.2, by law. It actually passed the house, but got delayed (and ultimately killed) in the Senate.

February 18th, 2005 at 2:41 pmWell, I bet you too many Americans don’t understand what science is! And, the difference between a scientific theory and a creation theory! But, until we can discuss the dogmas permeating our society, we’ll never sort out this issue about science…..
February 18th, 2005 at 3:59 pmNo way would the US Senate vote that the Earth is flat 55-45. A lot more Democrats would vote in favor.
February 18th, 2005 at 4:27 pmThis story makes me sick. The same people who want this law want to cut the medical programs that make it possible to save premies. They also want to cut programs for the children who are then disabled for life because of good science. I wonder if their real goal in destroying science is actually to prevent these babies from living at all after they are born/baptised. Or do they forget that it was science that makes it possible for a premie to survive at all?
February 21st, 2005 at 1:13 pmHoly crap! I (reluctantly admitting) live in Indiana, and this is the first I’ve heard of this! However, now that the initial shock has worn off, it really shouldn’t come as any surprise to anyone who knows anything about this bassackwards state. Any state that consistently votes Republican sheerly out of habit, mainly due to a willful self-reinforcing ignorance of the world around them combined with a society-wide lack of intellectual curiousity, when mixed with a healthy dose of unquestioned “faith” and “family values” is capable of this.
Usually, the zealots who manage to get themselves elected to the State Legislature/school boards/etc. try to sneak these things through. Fortunately, there are a handful of reps at the Statehouse that are aware enough to keep an eye out for thing like this and present just enough resistance to thwart them. I hope this case turns out that way as well… but, as I alluded to earlier, nothing would surprise me anymore.
Hell, they’re still debating the whole “Daylight Savings Time” thing, even though it would have no practical or appreciable impact on the state or the state’s economy AT ALL.. and this argument has been going on for *decades*! :)
