Paying Uncle Bucky

For certain members of the Bush family the war in Iraq has been very profitable. Just ask William H.T. Bush, or, as President George W. Bush calls him, Uncle Bucky. Bucky Bush just made a cool $450,000 in war profits from Iraq through the St. Louis-based defense contractor Engineered Support Systems Inc. Bucky, who sits on the company’s board, cashed out a half-million of the company’s stock options last month.

ESSI’s stock prices skyrocketed “to record heights” with Uncle Bucky’s nephew’s decision to invade Iraq. ESSI raked in millions with contracts to refit military vehicles with extra armor, build $19-million worth of its protective shelters for chemical and biological weapons (despite the fact that no biological or chemical weapons have been found in Iraq), and provide communications support services to the Coalition Provisional Authority. Of course, the company hasn’t been without its share of trouble, even with a family member in the White House: some of ESSI’s no-bid contracts (with a value of $158 million) are now under investigation by the Pentagon.

Looks like insider trading runs in the family…

  2. Mary Cobb says:

Looks like our president is taking really good care of his kinfolks and friends, I don’t recall that being one of his running for re-election priorities, guess he just forgot to mention it.

  3. Larry fleisher says:

Incestuous aren’t they? At least they keep it in the family..
    Nah..couldn’t be insider trading…

  4. Barbara Roworth says:

If anyone wonders why we are fighting Bush’s war in Iraq, just look at who profits from this madness. Did Americans sleep through that last election?

  5. Diane West-Mott says:

Oh for the love of Pete- it just goes on and on- sort of like tumbleweeds blowing across the plains with no fence to them.

  6. Rich Hartzell says:

…and I doubt that the MSM will be picking this story up any time soon

  7. Nick Rackham says:

WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING VERY SOON TO GET RID OF GEORGE BUSH! THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS, IF THAT SO CALLED MAN STAYS IN POWER FOR ANOTHER 3 YEARS THIS PLANET DOES NOT HAVE MUCH CHANCE FOR A RECOVERY FROM ALL THE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE, MURDERING, AND CORRUPTION THAT IS BEING ENDORSED IN THE WHITE HOUSE THESE DAYS!

  8. Jana Lane says:

It is necessary to find ways to make the American people aware of this ooutrageous exploitation of the war in Iraq. Perhaps, the best way to begin is finding a way to inform college students. They are accustomed to reading about issues and considering their importance. It may also be possible to interest shareholders in stock in companies with contracts in Iraq. Also, there is a broad question here about war profiteeringthat might interest PBS and CNN. Lou Dobbs show is a possibility. It has to be possible to do something.

  9. Jane E. Schneider says:

Forget about Lou Dobbs–just have Jon Stewart/TDS do a segment on it, and you’ll have all the college students AND the MSM taking notice.

  10. Martha McLaughlin says:

Same old, same old. And as usual nothing will ever come of any investigation.
Seeing every branch of government is packed with Bushites, the “family” will get away with yet another one, while the average American will suffer.

  11. STEVE HERMAN says:

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE,WAR PROFITIERS FOR SURE!!!! at atime at war this company is making big bucks and not getting the job done, no bid contracts these guys must be investigated and when found what crimes were committed, they need to go to JAIL

Nothing surprises me anymore about this administration, and it’s leader, (likes to call himself). The media won’t speak out, except for Link TV. The Bushites are all affraid of displeasing him and getting wacked. The Democrates can’t be heard over the roar, so we just stand by and take it.

Never mind me, I’m just an old woman, one of the 48 million with no medical, screaming at the top of my lungs to get this bunch out of our white house. Preaching to the choir as it appears is doing us no good, we need some very strong people to help us with all the greed and lies to be exposed. All this is just the tip of the ice berg, Uncle Bucky is like his nephew, they are going to get all our marbles and then declare the game over. The question is how many of our best have to die and be maimed, how much of our air, water and soil is going to be contaminated, how many more species of wildlife are going to be distroyed, prestene areas cut down and drilled in, elections baught and stolen by their electronic voting machines, and last but not least, how many of our citizens are going to freeze or starve to death and loose all our constitutional and civil rights before we are able to convince the far right Bible thumpers these are their sins and it must stop. Time to start marching again, I think.

If soldiers still can get the death penalty for deserting like they used to in the old days, why can’t war profiteers be publicly hung (like they used to) ???

  19. Shirley I. Kimsey says:

When are the American people going to wake up and demand that this Dubby be impeached and the family be prosecuted for insider trading and conflict of interest.

  20. Kay Kin says:

    Huey,Dewey & Lewey too–Uncle Bucky ain’t the only one.
Marvin P Bush—Director of Stratesec, controlled by KuwAM (Kuwait-American co.) & Aviation General. Security contractors to the World Trade Center worth $9.2 mil in 1996.
Wirt D. Walker III-cousin, is also top Director of the above companies.
Mishal Al Sabah, son of the Emir of Kuwait-major share holder with Huey & Lewey and board of directors.
Little tid bit. Avaition General sold airplanes to NCATO (nat civil aviation training org.) of Giza, Egypt who inturn had contracts with flight training schools, one school—(drum roll, pls) Embry-Riddle in Fla, and we all know what their graduate class picture looked like.
So, knee deep in big muddy or what?

  21. Paul Shanabarger says:

We have lost our power to prosecute those who break the law. By we I mean the people. We have allowed what the founders worked so hard to prevent, One Party Rule.

  22. M.C. Haralson says:

After all the years of Uncle Bucky handing out monies to his favorite nephew, he’s getting his return. It’s it interesting that we had to go to war and kill all kinds of innocent people (there and our own). Isn’t it interesting that so many of the people that surround “W”, are people who were in trouble or under attack for various indescretions in previous administrations. I used to have a lot of respect for certain Republicans, but the ones in power now are evil, driven to end programs that they claim to support and others that have been extremely successful for many years.
Supposedly we are fighting for freedom around the world. If that is true then why are we loosing freedom at home? Men are making decisions to restrict womens rights as far as abortions are concerned, no surgeries, no pills, no RUD40 (the morning after pill), while criticising the fact that women in Iraq don’t have the right to dress as they please.
Freedom of religion is a great thing – as long as it agrees with their view of religion. You can’t tell me that any of them have ever heard of Jesus and read what he said. It’s easy to refer to God and what He says, the only problem I have with that is that God doesn’t communicate with all of us at the same time so that we all know what He really wants of us. But I thought that was why he sent his son Jesus down here, which is why the words is RED in the NEW Testament, seem to be important. The word Christian means Christ Like. Obviously no one has explained that to these religious fanatics, who if they were dressed like the people in the middle east and spoke that language, look as much and sound as fanatical as BinLauden and his followers.
I fear for this country. No one knows or cares about History. The Roman Empire fell after two hundred years because they didn’t pay attention to history either. I feel that we are on the same path when we “freely” elect people who have no regard for any history and are only concerned for their on good and the power they weild over those who pay no attention to the past and are so easily manipulated by untruths cloaked in smiles and good ol’boy handshakes and lies.

  23. Debra McDaniel says:

Gee, I can’t wait to see how quickly our free press takes to report on this little bit of conflict of intrest that without a doubt will join all the others under the carpet.

  24. Sage Greentrees says:

Someday, I would like to see all profit from war made illegal. It would really cut down on the killing. But, as a more realistic alternative that we could put in place NOW, let’s actually define war profiteering (as opposed to some small reasonable profit, I guess). Defining war profiteering should be doable and have definite historical precedent. War profiteering is ugly, morally repugnant and has always been considered extremely unpatriotic. So let’s define exactly what it is and start naming the profiteers and keep their names in the public eye. It is already working somewhat in the case of Halliburton, but I would really like to see more clarity and light on this issue. PS Thanks for this blog and all the work American Progress is doing.

  25. Charles H. Nations says:

Is there no one in Washington with enough guts to tell this guy that what he is doing is killing his heritage image. He should be reading the newspapers to really understand what’s going on and how people hate him and what he’s doing to this country. Surely someone should tell him to be a statesman not an asshole.
Remember Bush is a four-letter word.

For those who claimed a “morals” victory in the last presidential election and who look to the corrupt, intolerant, devisive, morally bankrupt, increasingly authoritarian Bush administration to restore faith in America (that would be religious faith), please be reminded the Spanish Inquisition began in 1478 and lasted for over 350 years. The American Inquisition began September 11, 2001. My wife and I are seriously considering moving to Canada…

  27. melissa miller says:

without the internet and the newsletters I read,I would never know about what is REALLY happening in this country.I despise this little weasel and all of his cohorts in Washington. So many people feel the same as I do and the other posters here, but feel helpless to get rid of him.He has surrounded himself with yes men and women,as did Hitler. His two “elections” helped him develop his right wing evangelical, anti everything not WASP enough power base and people to help him maintain it. He seems to forget he is president of the whole country. The sooner he is gone, the better.Nothing he does surprises me.very sad days ahead.

  28. Sharon Cox says:

I had thought of moving to Canada also, but this bunch of Bush nut’s foreign policy is worse than their domestic policy. My luck, right after moving Bush would decide where I lived he either wanted the oil under that soil or it was another part of his axes of evil.

  29. Todd Bradford says:

It doesn’t even seem that long ago that Clinton was forced to resign over the “Lewinsky” scandal and how so many Americans thought that was so terrible and evil and how cound anyone do anything like that and was forced into resignation…and here, now, we have this president and his croonies, who is responsible for murder, lies, torure, bringing this county to war on a foundation based on lies and allegations and an ever increasing war cost that originally was going to be 1.7 billion and now is over 450 billion (with no end in sight) along with all the innocent lives that have been lost, sending the deficeit to the highest it has ever been and pushing the “moral” agenda to no end…and almost half of America is okay with this. That scares me very much. Meanwhile, I have to work harder to keep paying for this way of life that just cost more and more with each passing day it seems. Living in the Land Of The Free sure ain’t cheap these days…about a month back I was down in Baja Mexico, along the Sea of Cortez and was surprised at how peaceful and easy living was down there and it seems many Americans and Canadians are thinking the same thing. I am seriously thinking of selling out up here and moving down there in the next few years. Much less inexpensive and it seems the only thing that would be a major crisis is when the tequila bottle is getting low…we only go through this life once and what we do, we can never get back. If I am on this planet to find my peace of mind, my home in my heart, I don’t see it happening here in America…sadly, I know I can’t afford it.

  30. Mariel says:

At this point, all we can do is get house members. House members that are either Democrats with balls and/or Republicans who are willing to cross party lines to begin impeachment hearing against every elected official who has had his or her hands in the war pot. That means starting with G.W. Bush, then Cheney, DeLay, Frist, etc.
