What Does the Left Think? Just Ask TheChanMan.

Yesterday Glen Reynolds — the king of the conservative blogosphere — wrote that “the Left certainly seems to be identifying with Ward Churchill,” the professor who made offensive comments about the people who died on 9/11.

The only evidence Reynolds provided for this smear was a newspaper article which noted that, before Churchill spoke recently on a satellite campus of the University of Wisconsin, a couple left leaning groups — including one called the “Whitewater United for Peace Party” — held “a student rally celebrating free speech.”

Maybe I’m missing something here but, as Armando noted on Daily Kos yesterday — it is completely ridiculous to use a free speech rally by a couple of student groups to brand the entire left as sympathetic to Churchill’s hateful, reprehensible comments.

Reynolds took note of Armando’s post and used it as an excuse to make the same illogical argument again. As proof of his theory the left is smitten with Churchill, Reynolds gleefully published an email which informed him, “Look what happened!! The comments [of Armando's post] turned into support for what Ward Churchill said.”

Anyway, I’ve skimmed through the comments section and there are probably six or seven people — with names like Planet B, Ksecus and TheChanMan — who say favorable things about Churchill’s comments. For all anyone knows, Planet B could be Reynolds’ nephew.

This is the right-wing playbook. An obscure college professor makes an outrageous statement. The Whitewater United for Peace Party holds a free speech rally. TheChanMan says he’s sympathetic. And, according to the right-wing blogger of record, all of a sudden “the left” is “identifying” with terrorist sympathizers.

I just talked to TheChanMan, he says that we should go back to the gold standards. Damn those lefties!

  3. rationalrevolution.net says:

Actually, this isn’t the first case of reporters and pundits using obscure quotes from blogs and newsgroups, but the real issue is that there have been cases of planted statements. What I mean is, these pundits register onto a newsgroup, then make an outrageous statement, and then they quote themselves impersonating a “random poster”.

It’s a great way to manufacture your own “news”.

  4. Nancita says:

Why so hasty to distance yourself from Churchill? Have you read what he actually said, as opposed to what the reactionaries are saying he said? “The Left” has to stop running like scared little rabbits every time the fascists say “boo”. We should be defending Churchill’s right to say unpopular things. And we should be thinking about what he said, not frantically running away from it.

  5. Gary Kleppe says:

I agree with Nancita. Churchill’s remarks weren’t nearly as offensive as what oozes on a regular basis out of the mouth of Ann Coulter and others like him.

There are times, actually too many times, when the left doesn’t stand up for its own left. This is one of them. To label Churchill as a “terrorist sympathizer” overstates his textual remarks and castigates his more than 25 years of efforts to champion native american rights. Then again one never sees too many of the so called left out there doing much for what’s left of the indians. Been to a rez lately, have you??

  7. Kg Prophet says:

This argument can be turned around to the Right. Take any nutcase senator who says “Nuke Syria” or “Kill gays” etc. Then say the entire right-wing supports it.

  8. Thomas DiLorenzo says:

I just caught some of Ward Churchill’s press conference on my car radio. He said when he called the World Trade Center victims of 9/11 “little Adolf Eichmanns” he wasn’t referring to the children, or the fireman, but the “cadre” of people who worked in the buildings facilitating international trade. In Churchill’s ignorant and warped mind, the man who worked at the WTC making sure your online credit card purchase of a hand-made rug from a shopkeeper in India went through OK is the moral equivalent of a mass-murdering Nazi death camp overseer.

For those of you who are not in academe, this is merely THE ACCEPTED WISDOM. Free-market exchange is “fascism,” and fascism means well, you know what it means. That’s why this moron had a mob of cheering brown shirts (a.k.a., University of Colorado students) behind him during his speech. They have been taught to believe that by your purchasing that rug from the Indian shopkeeper you are really “exploiting” him. That’s why they are always protesting “free trade” by throwing garbage cans through the windows of a Starbucks and other such antics. They are good little brainless, nutty Marxists educated by the likes of Ward Churchill.

the term was ‘little eichmanns’ not adolf eichmanns. how well were you listening thomas? the term was not coined by churchill either. read the goddamn essay in question, available in book form with the title ‘on the justice of roosting chickens’ and do it without an opinion about churchill the person. analyze the ideas presented and determine their validity that way. i don’t give a fuck about churchill either and am not a ‘brown shirt’. what i am is sick and tired of intellectual dishonesty being used so prevalently by both ’sides’ as a shortcut to thinking.

  10. Thomas DiLorenzo says:

restated: In Churchill’s ignorant and warped mind, the man who worked at the WTC making sure your online credit card purchase of a hand-made rug from a shopkeeper in India went through OK is the moral equivalent of a mass-murdering Nazi death camp overseer.

  11. MPH says:

Brad, respond to the points made by T. Dilorenzo. You are claiming what now? intellectual dishonesty? Come on…

Did you see Ward Churchill on Bill Mahar? What a flippin’ idiot – what Dilorenzo said is correct.

  12. Planet B says:

Yo, I AM Planet B… and I’m just further to the left. History will show that Churchill’s analysis was closer to the truth than many in the Democratic pseudo-left. You think people won’t keep striking back at us as the empire continues to attempt to spread (I say attempt because we won’t be successful, ultimately)? Look I’m complicit in my own way too. I haven’t totally opted out of the system and started fighting it 24-7, as much as I’d like to. But I’m also not someone working in high finance or international relations who may (or may not) have their hands way dirtier than mine. We MUST look at the root causes of terrorism or we will never stop it… and one of the main root causes is global capitalism and the poverty and oppression it engenders worldwide.

btw, still think I’m related to Reynolds?
