The New York Times this weekend reported that more than 20 federal agencies have produced hundreds of fake news segments to promote President Bush’s policies. Many of these segments were “subsequently broadcast on local stations across the country without any acknowledgement of the government’s role in their production.” One of these groups was the Office of Broadcasting Services, a branch of the State Department which traditionally has provided news shows with video from press conferences. According to the NY Times, that all changed in 2002, when, instead of providing reporters with raw footage of press conferences, the unit started producing segments manipulated to look like actual news clips. (This was all done “with close editorial direction from the White House.”) In all, the office produced nearly 60 segments, which were then distributed around the world for local stations to use as actual news footage.
Today, a reporter asked Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher: “Is it just clip reels that you put out or do you actually put out prepackaged news pieces?”
Boucher’s response? “Not quite sure I can explain to you the difference. Maybe I don’t know the…”
Isn’t that the problem, Mr. Boucher?
This is right up there w/ Scalia’s comments at the oral arguments on the 10 commandment thing(he suggested he didn’t know the difference between what would be religious and what would be secular art) and w/ Bush suggesting that citizens can spend money better than the government, of which he is in charge. These guys are so dysfunctional that they have to admit their dysfunction. But then that might be their plan.
March 14th, 2005 at 7:44 pmPerfect—-It is about time the mainstream press begin to talk back to an administration that has heretofore made it irrelevant at best; at worst, a pawn in their plans to distort the truth to a point where no one even recognizes their liars.
March 14th, 2005 at 7:54 pmThe question of progressives is how we put pressure on the Times and other establishment media to report regularly on the administration’s malfeasance. The Times article was point on but hardly timely or earthshaking. How about they try keeping up with the administration’s lies and manipulation.
Saw a bumper sticker today that said ” I don’t believe the liberal media”. I think that about sums it up. Even if the media were to stop being lapdogs for Bush many would not believe it anyway. Anything negative reported about Bush or the neocons is immediatly downplayed by the usual talking head pundits, as being an attack by the “liberal” media. Only when we can get people to realize that the bias that is not there. In the meantime carefully crafted “news items” are being pushed as real?
March 14th, 2005 at 8:39 pmKarl Rove is in the details…..you can rest assured that Rove, that modern day Goebbels, is behind much of this. The scary part is that millions of American people will be fooled by this into thinking that these pieces are actually real news, which is of course this Administration’s goal to begin with.
Orwell sure got it right, he was just 20 years off…
