The Religious Right’s Broken Promises»

The Radical Religious Right is trying to build an army of followers ready to fall in step behind its quest to redefine moral values. And here are some of the barking orders to women and African-Americans coming from The Promise Keepers, a right-wing, all-male religious movement:

Tony Evans, co-editor of Seven Promises of a Promise Keeper: “Sit down with your wife and say something like this: ‘Honey, I’ve made a terrible mistake. I’ve given you my role. I gave up leading this family, and I forced you to take my place. Now I must reclaim that role’ . . . I’m not suggesting you ask for your role back, I’m urging you to take it back.”

Wellington Boone, editorial board member of Promise Keepers magazine New Man: “I want to boldly affirm Uncle Tom. The black community must stop criticizing Uncle Tom. He is a role model.

Damn straight, I SHOULD be top of the pecking order and the rest of you better just bow before me…

Ummm… If it’s o.k. with you that is. If not, then just forget I said anything.

Seriously, do people honestly believe this? I suppose it’s like the pope being infallible. But how many Catholics actually follow his every word.

I know a few of them. They mean well, they really don’t realize how it comes off to “outsideres”.

You know what they remind me of. They remind me of those seminars that whats his face used to give in the 70’s & 80’s where they would keep you in a room for 8-12 hours talking to you & not let you leave for bathroom breaks, food or anything. Almost a hypnotism of sorts.

It may have been cool in King David’s time, but this is 2000 years later. We’ve changed.

  3. Litz Says:

Reminds me of a joke a friend sent. About the hubby who returned from a Promise Keeper’s seminar and told his wife that from now on she was going to clean his house, and cook him gourmet meals, and do his laundry, and all that, and then he said, “and tonight, do you know who’s going to wash me and put me to bed?”

And the wife says: “The undertaker, I reckon.”

Something like that. I’m not telling it well … had to be there …

  4. jusfishn Says:

These people are idiots. HOW MANY WOMEN ARE THERE THAT HAVE BEEN RUNNING THE FAMILY FOR YEARS WILL SUDDENLY GIVE UP THAT ROLL BECAUSE HUBBY SAYS HE WANTS HIS “ROLL” BACK??
ITS A ROLL HE NEVER HAD, SHE NEVER INTENDED FOR HIM TO HAVE IT.

  5. jusfishn Says:

THEY RUN THE ONLY FISHING TOURNAMENT I KNOW OF THAT CAN BE THEORETICALLY WON BY ATTENDING MEETINGS, THAT ARE NOT ON THE WATER.

  6. Jeff Says:

This is classic - take a couple of dumb remarks, for which you don’t even cite a source, and then use them to trash the entire organization. An organization, by the way, that has no political leaning whatsoever.

Instead of claiming to be against the so-called radical religious right, you should be honest and admit you just don’t like people who have faith in God. That is what you really mean, isn’t it?

  7. Wills Says:

Sorry, Jeff, I am a person who has deep faith in God but I have no respect for the Promise Keepers Organization. That is because my church sees this forced obedience as a one sided interpretation of the roles of family. I have several friends who let their husbands take over every aspect of the “head of the household” years ago and today one cries about how her husband feels so quilty because he cannot provide them with all the things they need and the other is nothing more than a battered wife. As for me and mine we will serve the Lord on an equal basis with respect and love for each other.

  8. The Witch Says:

    Errata: For “urging,” read “demanding.”

  9. marty Says:

Promise Keepers is hardly about some crazy political agenda. If you want to know what they are about check out the following link:

  10. Xavier Says:

Well…I have no love for the Promise Keepers, and I’m sure they didn’t intend it that way, but they’re technically right:

From _Legends, Lies & Cherishes Myths of American History_ by Richard Shenkman (pp. 123-124:

“That Harriet Beevcher Stowe’ Uncle Tom was despicable and sniveling is widely believed but utterly illusory. Stowe’s fictional Uncle Tom was no Uncle Tom. He was kindly, considerate, humane, and brave. When Simon Legree orders Uncle Tom to flog a slave who’s too sick to work, the old slave refuses….[he] never relents– at least not in Stowe’s telling of the tale. In the plays based on her book, though plays that were staged hundreds of times for northern audiences, Tom IS subservient and spineless. Only in the book he is noble.”

While I suspect Wellington Boone is aware of this when using the term in the quote, I’d want to check the context of his comment. The wingnuts are bad enough, no need to sink to their level in the abuse of quotes.

  11. Jeff Says:

Willis, those are both sad stories, but I don’t think either man is really following what the PK’s stand for. But o:k, I’ll accept that this topic isn’t about people of faith.

Then, the only other reason PK’s was described as part of a radical right-wing religious movement was to demogogue readers into thinking the right are rascists and bigots. The fact is the PK’s are completely apolitical, so attributing these traits to the right-wing is completely unsubstantiated and wrong.

  12. Bee Says:

It sounds like the scenario in the futuristic movie, “A Handmaids”Tale” may not be that far off in our future.
Maybe de-evolution is a valid theory.

  13. Constance Reader Says:

In other words, “Black men, you must get your black women under control.

    They scare us.”

  14. Zwack Says:

Was it only me who read the linked article?

While PromiseKeepers might claim to be apolitical, and some of their members are just trying to do the best that they can and be the best people that they can. The founder is highly political. The linked article explicitly stated sources for those quotes (no, I haven’t checked them but they are listed)

Given the organisations that support Promise Keepers and quotes from their staff while they may be apolitical, they certainly have connections with a lot of right wing “Christians”.

    Z.

  15. Ben Says:

Funny bumper sticker I saw once:

“My Wife Thinks I’m at PromiseKeepers.”

Seriously, though, I remember reading Uncle Tom’s Cabin in high school and thinking that Uncle Tom really was a good person. Maybe someone can explain why he should be scorned.

  16. marty Says:

This goes beyond radical and is approaching bizarre:

A Promise Keeper is committed to honoring Jesus Christ through worship, prayer and obedience to God’s Word in the power of the Holy Spirit.

A Promise Keeper is committed to building strong marriages and families through love, protection and biblical values.

A Promise Keeper is committed to reaching beyond any racial and denominational barriers to demonstrate the power of biblical unity.

A Promise Keeper is committed to influencing his world, being obedient to the Great Commandment (see Mark 12:30-31) and the Great Commission (see Matthew 28:19-20 ).

  17. Becky Says:

Yes Marty, we understand that they are Christians. No one here is criticizing the fact of their Christian ministry. What we have a problem with is their extreme male-dominance INTERPRETATION of the Bible.

  18. marty Says:

    Becky,
And anyone else willing to discuss this matter further, I invite you to e-mail me at tavy007 at yahoo dot com.

Long story short, I know a lot of women who listen to Tony Evans and rather than condemning him, wish that their husbands would listen to him as well.
