Seriously, though, I remember reading Uncle Tom’s Cabin in high school and thinking that Uncle Tom really was a good person. Maybe someone can explain why he should be scorned.

While PromiseKeepers might claim to be apolitical, and some of their members are just trying to do the best that they can and be the best people that they can. The founder is highly political. The linked article explicitly stated sources for those quotes (no, I haven’t checked them but they are listed)

Given the organisations that support Promise Keepers and quotes from their staff while they may be apolitical, they certainly have connections with a lot of right wing “Christians”.

Willis, those are both sad stories, but I don’t think either man is really following what the PK’s stand for. But o:k, I’ll accept that this topic isn’t about people of faith.

Then, the only other reason PK’s was described as part of a radical right-wing religious movement was to demogogue readers into thinking the right are rascists and bigots. The fact is the PK’s are completely apolitical, so attributing these traits to the right-wing is completely unsubstantiated and wrong.

Well…I have no love for the Promise Keepers, and I’m sure they didn’t intend it that way, but they’re technically right:

From _Legends, Lies & Cherishes Myths of American History_ by Richard Shenkman (pp. 123-124:

“That Harriet Beevcher Stowe’ Uncle Tom was despicable and sniveling is widely believed but utterly illusory. Stowe’s fictional Uncle Tom was no Uncle Tom. He was kindly, considerate, humane, and brave. When Simon Legree orders Uncle Tom to flog a slave who’s too sick to work, the old slave refuses….[he] never relents– at least not in Stowe’s telling of the tale. In the plays based on her book, though plays that were staged hundreds of times for northern audiences, Tom IS subservient and spineless. Only in the book he is noble.”

While I suspect Wellington Boone is aware of this when using the term in the quote, I’d want to check the context of his comment. The wingnuts are bad enough, no need to sink to their level in the abuse of quotes.

Sorry, Jeff, I am a person who has deep faith in God but I have no respect for the Promise Keepers Organization. That is because my church sees this forced obedience as a one sided interpretation of the roles of family. I have several friends who let their husbands take over every aspect of the “head of the household” years ago and today one cries about how her husband feels so quilty because he cannot provide them with all the things they need and the other is nothing more than a battered wife. As for me and mine we will serve the Lord on an equal basis with respect and love for each other.

This is classic – take a couple of dumb remarks, for which you don’t even cite a source, and then use them to trash the entire organization. An organization, by the way, that has no political leaning whatsoever.

Instead of claiming to be against the so-called radical religious right, you should be honest and admit you just don’t like people who have faith in God. That is what you really mean, isn’t it?
