President Bush has all but refused to acknowledge that global warming exists, much less is a real problem. And his right-wing allies in Congress have followed his lead, voting down proposals to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
Now the evidence is becoming truly shocking. Just weeks after Bush’s longtime political ally broke ranks with the White House and acknowledged the problem of global warming, photos now show that Mt. Kilimanjaro has been stripped of its snowcap for the first time in 11,000 years.
Here is how Kilimanjaro’s peak has looked for the last 11,000 years:

Here is how Kilimanjaro’s peak looks today:

Maybe if President Bush saw these photos, he’d smarten up, and start joining most of the other industrialized nations in taking this threat seriously.
Then again, maybe he wouldn’t.
March 16th, 2005 at 7:28 amW does not ski, nor own any ski resorts. Why should he care about less snow anywhere?
March 16th, 2005 at 7:44 amNot only Mt. Kilimanjaro; also national parks in Alaska are under threat. But there is also action to save them.

March 16th, 2005 at 9:46 amAre you kidding? If someone lacks the sense and sensibility, even if the facts hit him over his head, he can’t acknowledge them!
The great outdoors is one of my passions, and it pains me to see the damage done. I’ve been going up to the Adirondack park, NY, for the last 25 years… In the last 10-15 years, I’ve seen the devastating effects of acid rain (mercury included)….. whole mountains are stripped…. the fish cannot be eaten…. arghhhh
Please, we have to be realistic. “What if…” he saw this or that, ain’t gonna change a thing, because Bush and his gang cannot understand. One reason is that they (Like many others belonging to the economic/social elites) don’t have to suffer the consequences of their actions…. Or, that the profits realized from bad public policy outweigh the negative effects…
Likewise, their kids will always be able to get the best healthcare in the world, and, yes, live comfortably anywhere in the world!
This is another point of DISCONNECT…. one we should pound them with…. Don’t appeal to their understanding, but hit them his the charge of them being rich & arrogant and out of touch with the common folk.
Another thing that pisses me off is why the Dems haven’t taken advantage of the fact that so many Americans care about the environment… I’m talking about the hunters… who vote Republican by the droves! They are nature lovers, aren’t they? They go into the woods, fish in the lakes, whatever… and their environment has been in constant attack by the Repubs….
March 16th, 2005 at 10:29 amI believe that humans are causing climate change, but I think this case is not due to greenhouse gasses, but more to deforestization.
We need to be very careful with cause and effect or the wingers will use any opening to wedge.
March 16th, 2005 at 1:12 pmHow can anyone verify what Mt. Kilimanjaro looked like 11,000 years ago? For that matter even 1,000 years ago.
March 16th, 2005 at 1:53 pmDeep thinker is sitting in a very shallow puddle, farting and calling it a hot tub.
Uhh, the Japanese have drawn pictures of this mountain dating back 5000 years.
If you think what you might say could be dumb, don’t say it.
March 16th, 2005 at 2:41 pmkindness,
Please let me know in which museum you saw a 5,000 Japanese drawing of this African mountain. I’d like to include it on my upcoming tour of nonexistent places.
March 16th, 2005 at 3:52 pmYea I was a dumbshit when I posted that.
BIG OOPS. Sorry bout that.
So, Do you doubt that there have been glaciers on top for the last 10000 years or are you just pointing out my stupidity?
March 16th, 2005 at 4:08 pmPicture nr. 1 – snow covered. Picture nr. 2 – snow gone ( not as cold ). Get it, wingnuts?
March 16th, 2005 at 6:05 pmBadgervan,
I am very interested this topic. Asking for proof does not equate with doubt, necessarily. Anyone who disagrees with the idea of global warming is going to ask questions, and if the photos are to mean anything, answers must be forthcoming.
Questions like: Why are the two photos are different angles/perspectives? What effect do the seasons have on the snow cover? What other things could have the snow cover to recede as is suggested? By what method can this be traced back to human actions?
The is a thought provoking subject. Suggesting that anyone, though, especially a powerful person, *should* be swayed by two simple photos is scary. If the American Tax Payers union showed Bush a picture of poor old people from the 1930’s and a weathly couple from now, would you approve if he ended Social Security payments without asking any questions?
March 17th, 2005 at 10:36 amI just thought I might point out that this is a picture of the top from January 2007. http://www.mtkilimanjarologue.com/pictures/snows-on-kilimanjaro-aerial-view.html
This is not to prove any point one way or another, just to show the current status. I’m leaving to climb it soon and happened upon this site (as well as the one I linked). They have had over 12′ of snow in December 2006. I’ll let you know how much snow/ice exists now when I get back in mid March. I can say that when I link to people who have climbed, older climbs have pictures of snow across the whole top, newer (2000-2006) do not. And the newest ones from Dec 2006-Feb2007 have snow and ice covering the ground.
February 22nd, 2007 at 5:13 pmdanheskett, The second photo posted above is of the inner crater only. The first photo shows the glaciers on the outside. The second shows the glaciers on the inside. But I can say for sure that plenty of photos I’ve seen have shown them receding. Some scientists say it is due to global warming, others due to the strip farming surrounding Kili, and some due to lack of snow over the past 30 years.
If I make the summit and have the strength, I plan to hike to the inner crater and take a few photos of the ash pit and volcanic shaft.
