DeLay, Frist, Bush Dramatically Out of Touch

New polling numbers on the Schiavo case have been released by ABC News. Here are some highlights:

- 70% of Americans say it is inappropriate for Congress to involve itself in the Schiavo case.

- 67% of Americans “think the elected officials trying to keep Schiavo alive are doing so more for political advantage than out of concern for her or for the principles involved.” (Just 19% believe the elected officials are acting out of concern for her or their principles.)

- 58% of Republicans, 61% of independents and 63% of Democrats oppose federal government intervention in the case.

- 50% of evangelicals oppose federal government intervention in the case, just 44% approve of the intervention.

- 63% of Catholics and a plurality of evangelicals believe Schiavo’s feeding tube should be removed.

I’d like to add three points:

    1. Moral Arguments Favoring the End of Life Support
A thorough discussion of the very strong moral arguments in favor of honoring Terri Schiavo’s end-of-life request to her husband has been completely missing in the media.

    For my take, see:

“Schiavo, Mill and the Culture of Living”

    2. The 1999 Texas Futile Care Law
There has been virtually no coverage of the hypocrisy of the President, Tom Delay and his supporters. In 1999, Governor Bush signed the Texas Futile Care Law, which only last week allowed a Texas hospital to remove lfe support from a terminally ill 6-month old over his mother’s objections.

For details, see Mark Kleiman’s blog:

    “Schiavo, Hudson and Nikolouzos”

    3. Bill Frist, the Hippocratic Oath and “Witness Malpractice”
It is sadly ironic that Frist, Mr. Tort Reform himself, would commit the Congressional equivalent of “witness malpractice.” Lacking expertise as a neurologist and having never examined the patient, he weighs in all the same. It’s exactly the kind of bogus expert testimony in the courtroom that Frist routinely decries.

    For more details, see:

“Bill Frist: Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hide”

Nicely done Jon. Very detailed. You have more time than I do & you spend it better than I probably would.

I don’t understand the moral argument here. Oh sure, I understand those who hear her parents & think that we are tying to execute an invalid. But from what I’ve seen (pictures of her cat scans, neurologists EEG results) it is clear this body isn’t filled with person. In biblical terms, isn’t it just to allow the body to drop so that finality can be met. I mean, just because medical science may now have the capability of keeping bodies alive on full life support till they reach the ripe age of 200+, does that mean they want that to happen to all of us?

I mean, What is up with that?

  3. hawkman says:

If Bill Clinton was brought up before the Arksansas Bar for violating his professional ethics, then why hasn’t Frist been brought up before the Tennessee medical board for violating his. His “diagnosis” is 12th century at best, and violates every canon of the medical profession.

    from David Corn this AM
Republican concern for life is highly selective. Consider the case of Sam Hudson. A six-month-old who was born with a fatal form of dwarfism. A Houston hospital removed his breathing tube last Tuesday–against the wishes of his mother. The hospital was following SOP. As the Houston Chronicle reported:

Texas law allows hospitals to discontinue life-sustaining care, even if a patient’s family members disagree. A doctor’s recommendation must be approved by a hospital’s ethics committee, and the family must be given 10 days from written notice of the decision to try and locate another facility for the patient. Texas Children’s [Hospital] said it contacted 40 facilities with newborn intensive care units, but none would accept Sun.

Here’s the question. Where was Tom DeLay? This happened literally in his backyard. Why did he not rush in? Why did he not have Congress pass a law to block the hospital? In this case, the issues might be even favorable for his side. After all, the person who was undeniably the guardian with the power to speak for the patient had opposed the life-ending action. But this African-American baby–who had not become a cause celebre for the religious right base of the Republican Party–did not receive the attention of DeLay, Bill Frist and comrades in their so-called “culture of life.” What’s the explanation? Anyone care to make a guess?

does anyone remember when the tsunami hit and it took president bush days to respond to the deaths of thousands? he didnt cut his vacation short for that disaster but unnecessarily did so (he could have waited for it to be flown to him) for this bill that applies only to one person. im not trying to do numbers with people’s lives but theyre doing a bad job of convincing us that theyre not taking political advantage of the “hot” news story right now.

  8. Comments From Left Field says:

    GOP Has No Boundaries
In case you have not seen this already, the GOP is purposely politicizing the Terri Schiavo case. Once again, false empathy and indignation from the masters of manufacturing morality.

  9. Vinilo Suave says:

It came to me, as I read the several insightful, deft, witty, and sometimes elegant comments centering on Mr. Bush’s poitical opportunism, that, in this instance, those comments miss the mark, for it is obvious to me that he stands by the rights of the hapless woman as a kindred soul who has himself endured and prospered while in a vegetative state.

  10. Bones says:

Now that it is known Schiavo’s husband will Not benefit financially from her death, the wild conspiracies are starting to be spun – such as,by her brother, that the husband wants her dead because if she recovers and is rehabilitated she’ll reveal he may have tried to kill her.

  11. KK says:

if the data is to be believed. However, a look at the questionnaire shows that ABC News completely misrepresented Terri’s medical condition, which undoubtedly impacted the responses given. Question 2, which asks the central question, claims that Terri is on life support:

    2. Schiavo suffered brain damage and has been on life support for 15 years. Doctors say she has no consciousness and her condition is irreversible. Her husband and her parents disagree about whether she would have wanted to be kept alive. Florida courts have sided with the husband and her feeding tube was removed on Friday.

Terri has never been on life support. The only medical treatment Terri received for the past five years has been food and water through a feeding tube, which is nothing at all like artificial life support. Artificial life support consists of ventilation for people unable to breathe on their own. The question sets up a strawman argument that so completely contradicts reality that the entire poll must be considered invalid.

  12. Alex says:

KK is inaccurate. A feeding tube is a form of life support because one cannot live without food and water either.

It is true that the words “life support” usually raise the image of a ventilator in one’s mind, however, for those patients able to breathe on their own but not feed themselves or swallow safely, a feeding tube is life support.

It is my sincere belief that the Rip-Off Republicans are shooting themselves in the foot on this one. It’s going to come back to haunt them in the 2006 election. You heard it here first…

  14. Saundra Gayhart Dale says:

It is totally disgraceful that JEB & Geo Bush,Congress and Senateinvolved themselves in this case. Bush signed legislation as gov of Texas taking the exact opposite position. It is somewhat understable that Mrs. Schaivo’s parents would take this position. After 15 years tho, it would seem it is time for even them to let this poor woman go to peace.I would much prefer that the Bush’s and legislature be so concerned about the citizens of the USA who do have a brain cortex and who are starving.

  15. Roy Gibson says:

I must point out that the Democrats bear no small measure of responsibility for this legislative pile of crap. 47 of 100 House Dems present voted for this bill, which would have required a 2/3 majority. If they had voted against it as a group it wouldn’t have passed the house. The Senate allowed this to pass on a voice vote with no dissent. It would have required only one Senator to object to require a roll call vote. This is exactly why no one can take them seriously.

  16. Sherry Shortt says:

Perhaps we should install video cameras in every ICU of every hospital in America, then Mr. Frist and Mr. Delay could diagnose everyone on camera and decide who lives or dies! What a dispicable display of political pandering!
