On Thursday, privatization-pushers released a deceptive “research briefing” with excerpts from news stories on recent Social Security town-hall meetings. The article snippets give the impression that President Bush’s privatization plan enjoys nationwide backing; indeed, the document’s bold, italicized headline reads, “More Americans Support Call To Strengthen Social Security.”
Just one problem — several of the individuals quoted in the press release explain in the excerpted articles that they actually oppose privatization:
The pull-quote: Clif Smith, A Retiree From Joplin: “I Believe [Social Security] Needs Improved [Sic].”
The full quote:
“I believe it needs improved,” said Clif Smith, a retiree from Joplin, at the AARP gathering. “But nothing of the nature of what is being talked about in Washington.”
Smith said he opposes private accounts because he thinks they would drain money from the trust fund, but he said the fund itself should own stock.
+++
The pull-quote: “[Kimberly] Holloway Sees Advantages In Personal Accounts In That It Would Encourage More Savings And Financial Responsibility …”
The full quote:
Holloway sees advantages in personal accounts in that it would encourage more savings and financial responsibility, she said.
But she’s wary that this proposal feeds into the Bush administration’s trend to encourage self-centered thinking away from considering the welfare of the general society, she said.
“We all should care because you don’t know what (misfortune) will happen,” Holloway said. “Don’t fiddle with the social safety net.”
+++
The pull-quote: Scott Savelkol, Recent Graduate From Dickinson State University: “Doing Nothing Is Not An Option.”
The full quote:
Scott Savelkol, who recently graduated from Dickinson State University, said he also opposes to private accounts [sic]. He would prefer lawmakers lift a $90,000 cap on wages taxed for Social Security.
“Doing nothing is not an option,” Savelkol said.
Bwaaaaahahaha… now THAT’S desperate.
March 28th, 2005 at 11:39 amWhen I said “George Bush is a perfect idiot,” they published my statement as “George Bush is … perfect.”
March 28th, 2005 at 11:46 amIt sort of reminds you of those movie posters for crap movies that quote 1-3 word phrases from reviewers who panned the movie.
March 28th, 2005 at 11:48 amIt seems that Bush and the truth only had a fleeting relationship
March 28th, 2005 at 11:50 amalan — those copywriters had to go somewhere once the newspapers got hip to the deception. working for the gop is very lucrative…
March 28th, 2005 at 11:52 amMAD magazine used to have that as a feature humor piece: The words the movie advertisement used from a review, then what the review actually said. Nice to see the Repubs getting their ideas from MAD.
March 28th, 2005 at 12:14 pmHueyplong, that comment was perfect.
March 28th, 2005 at 12:21 pm“It seems that Bush and the truth only had a fleeting relationship”
“The Truth” … yeah, they’ve heard of that. Like sincerety, when you can fake that, you’re home free.

March 28th, 2005 at 1:01 pmThe modern GOP is being run by pseudoscience types — creationists and anti-science people. This is one of the standard techiniques used by pseudoscience proponents. It’s called “quote mining”. Do a Google search on “quote mining” for examples.
March 28th, 2005 at 1:04 pmThe GOP is addicted to lying like a long-term heroin addict is to his needle.
If they were ever forced to admit and accept THE TRUTH, all their heads would probably explode.
March 28th, 2005 at 1:20 pm“Incredible!”"Amazing!”"Like nothing I’ve ever seen before!”
March 28th, 2005 at 1:37 pmThank goodness for blogs. You’ll never see the so-called journalists on the major newsies do this kind of in-depth search for the truth. Why? They’re lazy.
March 28th, 2005 at 1:39 pmAll true comments onthis thread, but nothing will change until the faith-based wal-marters and their fantasy economy tanks really hard and they can’t buy chinese trinkets nor put food on their families. They have the luxury of voting their fantasy values, but all that changes when Cap’n bush sinks this fiscal Titantic. ‘course, we all suffer, but there’s a silver liniing, the neoconomics get buried for another 40 years. Meanwhile, buy euros.
March 28th, 2005 at 1:41 pmHistory moves forward while the bush administration happily marches back to 1984.
Where have you gone Joe Dimaggio?
March 28th, 2005 at 1:43 pmNew GOP quote: In reference to private accounts, pbg says, “Incredible! Amazing!”
March 28th, 2005 at 1:46 pmJust goes to show just what rotten Christians these guys are. A true Christian is supposed to tell the truth. He isn’t supposed to make shit up or quote out of context. A Christian is supposed to tell the truth. Always. Why other Christians don’t call them on it, I’ll never know. I guess their not serious about defending their religion’s good name from opportunistic hypocrites.
March 28th, 2005 at 1:48 pmIt seems that Bush and the truth only had a fleeting relationship
Yeah, but truth didn’t swallow.

Isn’t this called “Bearing false witness”?
March 28th, 2005 at 2:18 pmIn Middle English, “Amusing, Artificial, and Awful” used to mean “Pleasing, Evident of Artistry, and Awe-Inspiring”. Still, do, really, but the connotations have changed. Bush’s privatization plan is “Amusing, Artificial, and Awful” only by today’s standards.
March 28th, 2005 at 2:26 pmDo you think people are starting to get the picture about this administration? This is just about SSI, just think of the other lies about war, Iraq, budgit defict, trade defict, prisenor abuse you name it they have lied about it. And they call them selves christians.
March 28th, 2005 at 2:30 pmDear Tom
March 28th, 2005 at 2:37 pmYour argument is liquidated when its specious quality is revealed (that’s English as in roughly 1776)
Cliff Smith among others should sue. They took his quote out of context and made him appear to support something he disagrees with. I’m not sure it legally matters that they claimed his endorsement without his consent or knowledge but it would be interesting to find out in court.
March 28th, 2005 at 3:14 pmImpeachment …. let’s see last time a blue dress fell victim ….. this time a nation, culture, sanity, is in the crosshairs …… Dissent is the plasma of democracy …. “Let it Bleed”
March 28th, 2005 at 4:42 pmSo even after they SCREEN the participants to these so called “Town-Hal” meetings the STILL have to missquote them.
I guess you just can’t find good sheeple anymore.
March 28th, 2005 at 5:14 pmIn present general atmosphere of such widespread corporate scandal, this is a very bad time to turn citizens’ savings over to corporate America. Its just a replay of Enron/Whitehouse ripoff but on much vaster scale. Wake up America.
March 28th, 2005 at 5:23 pmThe pull quote: Joe Schmoe declared, “Private accountes are…(A)…w…e…s…o…m…e!”
The full quote: Joe Schmoe declared, “Private accounts are the most awful idea George Bush has ever came up with [sic]!”
March 28th, 2005 at 5:46 pmIt seems that Bush [told the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the] truth [: if] only [America] had [more people like him.]
Comment by David (Austin Tx)  March 28th, 2005 @ 11:50 am
March 28th, 2005 at 6:18 pmSomehow none of this surprises me. It also wouldn’t surprise me if Bush’s plan succeeds even with zero support from the population. Nothing surprises me anymore.
March 28th, 2005 at 9:44 pmI have a theory to why Bush is getting soooo desperate to get this social security through, despite the fact that the majority of Americans are dead set against it. I mean why would someone commit political suicide in order to push something no one wants? Because the ass is getting ready to drop out of the stock market. Think about it. Not only is our economy headed south, it’s circling the bowl folks. Bush has spent all the money we had and much much more. Our dollar is all but worthless. Anyone with any sense and a large amount of money are now investing in the European Market. The returns are better and with the rate of exchange once you do the initial conversion your making almost time and a half on your returns. No one is pumping any “new” money into the American market. Bush wants to use the private accounts to prop up our market so he can put off the depression that is bound to happen, so he can once again duck taking account for this mess. He does not want the next major depression to happen on his watch, so he’s trying to prop up the market till the next presidential term. Remember how everyone was throwing a fit to about how this years budget was so deceptive and didn’t include all that it was supposed to? Because if they put everything in we would have the real facts about the economy, and those facts don’t reflect well for the Republicans. Think about it folks, why else would they lie about the budget and try to push through this social security “reform” that no one wants? Becuase they have someting to hide.
March 28th, 2005 at 9:50 pmdo you folks call this stuff to the attention of purple state newspapers?
March 28th, 2005 at 11:52 pmIt’s called “lying by omission” and nobody does it better than BushCo’s people.
March 29th, 2005 at 12:16 amCan someone with credentials post this on the Freeper’s website. I’d love to see their response.
March 29th, 2005 at 7:04 amIf you say it enough people believe it…Carl Rove, FOX News, all those twisted neo-con SOB’s know that and don’t care if it’s true or not. They are all so christ like huh?
March 29th, 2005 at 8:26 amNo! If they were forced to, the GOP’s head would “perhaps” explode in ackowlediging the types of U.S. citizens (as in America) they have become?
March 30th, 2005 at 2:01 amU.S. of America!

March 30th, 2005 at 2:14 amI mean, is it a surprise? The Leage of Disinformation reigns supreme in America. Wow, that’s carping. Excuse me.
