Right Wing Whines About the LA Times

There is a lot of carping on right-wing blogs about this Sunday’s article on the DeLay family’s decision to terminate life support for Tom’s father. On the National Review’s blog, the Corner, K.J. Lopez says:

The Times tries to make the case the same as the Schiavo case, which it is not.

More examples here, here and here.

This reaction is puzzling for several reasons:

1. All these commentators learned the differences between Terri Schiavo and Tom DeLay’s father by reading the LA Times article.

2. The LA Times article includes a lengthy quote from Tom DeLay’s spokesman stating that the cases are completely different.

3. There are similarities between DeLay’s father and Terri Schiavo. As the LA Times notes: “Both stricken patients were severely brain-damaged. Both were incapable of surviving without medical assistance. Both were said to have expressed a desire to be spared from being kept alive by artificial means. And neither of them had a living will.”

Factual realities never seem to matter one bit to those who have the blessing of Rove within them.

The best remark on this situation I found in last week’s Dilbert (slightly reworded):

“People are so conditioned to take a polarized position that a reasoned, balanced analysis looks to them like hatred.”

So true. Sometimes of leftys, but these days ALWAYS by the Bushbots, neocons, and the Evangelical right. It could almost pass as the definition of fundamentalist.

  3. Stephen says:

Yes, the cases are completely different. Before Senator DeLay had only the wishes and concerns of the family to consider. Now he must beggar to his constituency who are evangelical hypocrites. Because DeLay is a politician without scrupples he has no problem in soliciting and getting their support.

    Greatly enjoyed the “Easter Reflections.”

Still think that Bill Frist is getting off the hook far too easily. What do people make of his video analysis/diagnosis of Terry Schiavo?

Please keep in mind that in offering his medical verdict, Frist directly impugned the integrity and credibility of three separate court-appoint doctors who not only–unlike Frist–specialized in neurology but also–wait for it–actually examined Terry Schiavo in person.

Okay. No problems with that–the Frist video verdict? Seems like sound medical practice?

Or perhaps Frist is offering it to us as an example of technological progress? After all, we’ve gone from doctors not making house calls to doctors not having to examine patients whatsoever–in the hospital, office, ambulance, etc. Nope, we’re all just TV critics now–just show me the vid.

Scott Shepard, a reporter at PalmBeachPost.com, claims that Frist draws fire. Quite frankly, I haven’t seen much of that fire.

But Shepard, to his considerable credit, offers an excellent summary of what Dr. Frist maintained–and published!–before he became Senator Frist.

Well, well. .Check it out, please.

Since becoming a senator, Frist has moved from the reality-based to the faith-based community.

How else to account for his god-like powers, and his seemingly complete disregard of sound medical practices.

I’m harping on this, I know: but Frist, by many accounts, wants to run for President in 2008.

From what I’ve seen thus far, Frist worries me far more than Delay.

  5. common sense says:

Both these medivial morons should bother the entire nation. I believe that what Frist did is akin to medical malpractice and and should have his medical licensed yanked from him. What bothers me most is the fundies who, without a thought, allow their kids to used as political pawns and have them arrested for something they know nothing about.Maybe we should take away these parents licenses to be parents.OOPS I forgit, you don’t need a license to be an irresponsible parent, just a rudimentary knowledge of sex. Also,I am bothered by the blowhards such as Randall Terry and Pat Mahoney, who are nothing more than glorified, ego driven, media seeking whores. Let Terri die in peace and dignity.

I am surprised that the AMA hasn’t weighed in and announced that a “video” exam is unprofessional and his pronouncements where against their canon of ethics & practices.

  7. Stephen says:

Death is certain, Time is not. (an old adage)
The fact that both DeLay’s father and Terri Schaivo could not possibly be resusitated by any known medical effort suggests a strong similarity between the two cases. The only difference is the TIME. DeLay’s father’s death would have been within a matter of weeks, not matter what the medical efforts, whereas Terris not only lasted for years but could last for years more with the same outcome..So I repeat..
Death is Certain, Time is NOT
