Media Priorities

Four U.S. national guardsmen from Indiana were killed Saturday when their vehicle struck a land mine in southeast Afghanistan. It was the deadliest day for U.S. forces in Afghanistan in nearly a year, and “highlighted the dangers still facing foreign and Afghan troops more than three years after the fall of the Taliban.”

Didn’t hear about any of this? Hardly a surprise. A LexisNexis search of broadcast and cable news television transcripts found only seven references to the deaths in Afghanistan — two on ABC, two on NBC, and three on CNN; the average length of the reference was thirty-two words, about 15 seconds of airtime. During the same period, LexisNexis found 159 programs featuring discussion of the Schiavo case, with most devoting an entire segment to the issue.

    Simply put – wow.

  2. Vaughn Hopkins says:

Yes, but Mrs. Schiavo is really important. This is a lady whose contributions to our society are legion. She is a lady who has united our country around the issue of “aaaaah wwaaaaa”. By the way, what has she said today about, for example, the latest massive earthquake in Sumatra, where, as I recall, a couple thousand people have perished?

  3. The Witch says:

Well, LexisNexis’s security was breached, remember? Must have been by those damn liberals so they can misrepresent the true priorities of our fine administration. >:D

On the bright side, the media in Australia is doing a good job. They responsibly report that George Casey, the commanding US general of the Multi-National Force in Iraq, estimated that
current insurgent assaults were running at between 50 and 60 attacks a day
    .

On the not so bright side, and perhaps not by coincidence, a recent survey conducted by the Aussie Lowy Institute for International Policy reveals that our friends down under have (1) dropped us from their top ten list of countries or regions they respect; and (2) can’t decide whether Islamic fundamentalism or American foreign policy comprises the greatest threat to global peace, security and prosperity.

You can get the original Lowy report here in PDF. Or, you can just read NYT’s summary here.

What else? Well, I’d guess that most ThinkProgress readers do know about Juan Cole’s blog, Informed Comment.

Without claiming that Cole is free of bias, whatever that means, please let me recommend him as someone who both (1) has expert knowledge on the region; and who (2) responsibly follows, links to, and provides information about the events and their media coverage.

For what it’s worth, I read Cole critically but read him everyday: he’s performing a real service to any and all parties interested in getting beyond the slim, carefully crafted pickings of Mass Media on the Iraq War in particular and the Persian Gulf region in general.

Thank you for bringing this up. It frustrates me to no end how so many important issues are ignored in the media. I have resorted to watching international news so I can learn about something besides Terry Schiavo and Michael Jackson.
