DeLay Refuses to Clarify Threatening Statement
On Thursday, responding to Terri Schiavo’s death, Tom DeLay said:
The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior, but not today.
For the safety of the state and federal judges involved, Sen. Ted Kennedy asked DeLay to clarify his remarks:
I’m not sure what Mr. DeLay meant when he said “the time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior.” But at a time when emotions are running high, Mr. DeLay needs to make clear that he is not advocating violence against anyone. People in this case have already had their lives threatened. In just the past few weeks, judges and their families in this country have been brutally murdered.
DeLay refuses to do so. In today’s New York Times, DeLay spokesman Dan Allen says:
Objective observers know that Majority Leader DeLay was once again expressing his disappointment in how the courts clearly ignored the intent of the legislation that was passed. To suggest otherwise is simply obscene.
Allen’s comments do not address, explain or clarify what DeLay meant when he said “the time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior.” Specifically, who are “the men responsible”? And in what way will they “answer for their behavior”?
Moreover, DeLay intentionally passed on the opportunity to state unequivocally that he is not advocating violence. As a result, he continues to put Judge George Greer, several federal judges and Michael Schiavo at risk.

April 2nd, 2005 at 11:31 amI don’t know about the rest of you,but this looks like a statement that violence will befall those who are mentioned by name,and since we know of at least two incidents during the Schiavo vigil that two men were arrested for verifiable threats against Judge Greer and Michael Schiavo and the nut who broke some display panels in a local gun store to steal some weapons to “break Terri out”. It is also no secret that Greer is being protected by two federal marshalls. If you and I said these type of things in public,we’d would be visited by the FBI pronto. I guess when you’re the cockroach,you can get away with it.

“Objective observers know!” The subjective pronouncement leaves so very much left unsaid. Given DeLays exact words, and the specificity of factual references one could gather from reference materials would provide an objective observation. In the case of DeLay’s exact quote, objective observation would not provide the conclusion that he was expressing his disappointment. Objective observers would only know what he said based on the meaning of those words and phrases, of the syntax and grammar. That of course would leave out 99% of the observations of the quotes made by the mass of the population. These would necessarily have to be subjective observations. And it is surprising how many of these demonstrate a consistency in the knowledge of the intent of his remarks–violent action as retribution.
Unless Allen was implying that the only objective observers who are knowledgeable, are the ones to whom DeLay was speaking specifically, those being the folks that are in fact violent and prone to acts such as murder.
