Bill O’Reilly’s Papal Hypocrisy

Bill O’Reilly’s Papal Hypocrisy

Recently, Bill O’Reilly has heaped praise on Pope John Paul II. Here is O’Reilly on the Factor last Thursday:

But I do know that I’ve studied this pope as well as I’ve studied anybody. And I can’t find anything, anything that this guy didn’t walk the walk. You know, right down the line. Nobody’s perfect, but this guy was close in his personal behavior and the way he conducted himself.

O’Reilly was not so kind, however, when the Pope expressed his opposition to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. He launched into this diatribe on the March 12, 2003 edition of the O’Reilly Factor:

But as I’ve said before, I believe also that John Paul is naive and detached from reality. If America does not lead an attack on Iraq, once again, Saddam remains in power and is free to use his anthrax and other terrible weapons as he chooses.

So the pope does not seem to be concerned about that or about Saddam’s behavior in general. Once again, he must know Saddam is a killer. He must know he’s oppressed his own people using murder and torture. He must know that.

[Snip]

Summing up, Jacques Chirac is our enemy, and the pope, well, I don’t know what to think.

Good catch; it’s hard to keep track of all the hypocrisies on these guys. Or maybe it’s not that; maybe it’s that carefully nutured amnesia of theirs; for the right, amnesia is a way of life.

O’LieLy is a terrible embarrasment to all honest people of Irish descent.

I would almost rather be a limey than claim kinship with that scumbag.

He insults so many millions of good USA citizens with his moronic ultra-right-wing dogma.

    Patriot

  4. Robert Earle says:

In defense of O’Reilly (and believe me, THAT doesn’t come out of me often!), I think you’re comparing apple and oranges.

(Without the benefit of more context) the first comment has to do only with personal behavior, while the second has to do geo-political opinion. I don’t see it as hypocritical to admire someone in the first context, and disagree with someone in the second.

There’s lots of examples of O’Reilly’s hypocracy to point at; this isn’t one of them.

  5. cavanaghjam says:

I’ve got to agree with Robt Earle, though given his past behavior it would be s.o.p. for O’Reilly to say whatever he pulled out of his anus. Interesting, though, that a guy who walked the walk, was near perfect, should be under consideration as an enemy. O’Reilly really hasn’t got a clue. I think he’s declared enough people enemies for a century. Time for him to “shut up”.

  6. GOPHater says:

Gee, O’Reilly being a hypocrite. Imagine that! As you should know by now, being a hypocrite is a pre-requisite for entry into the GOP’s sick world.

  7. Jay says:

Robert Earle, you may be right but remember that in the battle between left and right, Dem and Repub, truth and dishonesty, the other side has a short attention span and is easily swayed by black and white arguments. They don’t do nuance and your argument introduces nuance to the debate. I think there’s a time and a place not to stoop down to their level, but when it comes to ripping O’Reilly and this most corrupt and compromised wingnut media…this example works just fine. Just MHO.

  8. karenas says:

I agree with Jay. Let’s not give the side that ridicules “nuance” and views everything as black or white benefit of the doubt. O’Reilly lies to his audience on a daily basis, why claiming he’s “looking out for them.” I was just as disgusted to hear Bush praise the Pope for being a champion of dignity and freedom when Bush was so squeamish around the Pope it was ridiculous. The Pope did not support the war, yet Bush hoped to erase that from our minds by hanging an albatross, in more honest administrations known as the Medal of Freedom, on the Pope’s neck. So Bush and his repug mouthpiece can now spout off about what a great guy the Pope is, in a effort to appease their Catholic contingency, while in fact, they both strongly opposed the Pope on the issue nearest and dearest to their hearts, invading Iraq.

Robert Earle, is spot on! First class analysis Mr Earle.

  12. Bee says:

O’Reilly was on the Bill Maher show this past weekend (one of the videoconferencing sequences), and was asked for his opinion of the Pope. Bill Maher was extolling the Pope’s virtues, while O’Reilly actually said something I actually agreed with (I know, it was quite a shock to me, too). O’Reilly said he thought that the Pope’s main legacy would end up being his refusal to do anything about his pedophile priests.
O’Reilly actually sounded sane on the show – so it left me wondering which was the act – the Maher show, or the O’Reilly show. Either way, the guy’s still a waste of perfectly good oxygen.

typical amnesia-laced Republican smugness; whoever is his fact checker must really be phoning it in

  14. Vinilo Suave says:

According to Mark Twain, it is saddening to realize that every man does the best he can, so I think we should stop calling O’Reilly nasty names, for the sybaritic asshole is doing the best he can. Show this dingleberry a little compassion. He is doing his best. Just ask that woman who sued him if that isn’t so.

  15. James E. Egolf Sr. says:

O’Reilly is not an honorable. His remark that the French and Pope John Paul II are the enemy is ludricous. By the way, I like the French, and I admired Pope John Paul II, and I do not need O’Reilly or anyone else to do my thinking.

  16. Farmer Ted says:

O’Reily is a low-grade con-man at best. What he tries to pass off as serious, political opinions belong in the back booths of the local pub where the unshowered are left to sit.

  17. Elinor Kieffer says:

The pope did not ignore the preist-pedophile scandal. He thought about and then, finally, said that child molestation is a sin. Wow! What moral leadership! Then he urged Cardinal Law not to resign. When Law did resign, the pope gave him a good job at the Vatican and a classy apartment for Law’s use. This is, i guess, the way the pope enforces thw vow of poverty.. So, rather than ignoring the scandal, ther pope tacitly approved it. And in his spare time he continued the centuries long oppression of women. God work, J-2P-2.

  18. john kelley says:

When O’really was making these comments judging the morality of others, good or bad, was there a buzzing sound in the background??

Woah! You missed the best part (I think). I caught O’Whatever on TV the other month talking about the Pope. He said he doubted the Pope was even speaking his own lines any more, but was having them fed to him. (I remember it because my Catholic in-laws were watching (they love Bill) and had egg on their faces. Somebody find that segment for us!?

  21. hugh fitzsimons says:

i am a real irishman although born in the uk. o’reilly is making us look ‘ridikilus’ (sic) by claiming to be irish one minute and american the next..situational nationality? can any of you please tell me what o’reilly’s irish credentials are? patently he was not born in ireland. were either of his parents (eg the working class accountant who brought his family up in the projects!) born in ireland or does he have at least one irish born grandparent. if he qualifies under the parent or grandparent rule does he hold an irish passport to which he would be entitled and has he ‘rejected’ an american passport. i chose irish nationality and rejected a british passport because both my parents were born in ireland. i am not anglo-irish, neither am i irish one minute and british the next. o’reilly seems to want to be everything to everyone!
nb i do have a lot of american family and i love them and respect them all
