O’Reilly on Pope: “Saddam Enabler,” “Detached from Reality”

More right-wing bashing of Pope John Paul II:

O’Reilly Then:

“John Paul has sent his emissary, Cardinal Pio Laghi, to tell President Bush that attacking Iraq would be ‘unjust’ and ‘immoral.’ That’s like sending Sister Mary Theresa to tell Eminem to stop cursing…Humanistically, [the pope] is one of the many Saddam enablers.” (3/15/03)

“I believe also that John Paul is naive and detached from reality. If America does not lead an attack on Iraq, once again, Saddam remains in power and is free to use his anthrax and other terrible weapons as he chooses. … Summing up, Jacques Chirac is our enemy, and the pope, well, I don’t know what to think.” (3/12/03)

“John Paul II recently came out and said that any war against Iraq would be ‘immoral.’ Back in the ’30s, Pope Pius XII actually supported Hitler politically, at least in the beginning of his rise when Pius was stationed in Germany.” (3/8/03)

O’Reilly Now:

“I do know that I’ve studied this pope as well as I’ve studied anybody. And I can’t find anything, anything that this guy didn’t walk the walk. You know, right down the line. Nobody’s perfect, but this guy was close in his personal behavior and the way he conducted himself.” (3/31/05)

I love that O’Reilly can compare opposing the Iraq war with supporting Hitler and still be viewed as legitimate.

I see nothing contradictory here. I think O’Reilly’s present comment should be taken that he’s admitting that the Pope was right, and he was wrong. And he’s also admitting that the Pope “walked the walk” and that he himself did not. You have to read in-between the lines a little, but it’s much easier to believe that he’s just correcting himself, rather than contradicting himself. Bill’s just not that kind of guy.

    I love his analogy…

Cardinal Pio Laghi is to Sister Mary as
    George Bush is to Eminem!

    I’m confused.

How is “Nobody’s perfect, but this guy’s close” a contradiction from when he critiqued the Pope’s decisions, specifically in regard to Iraq?

It’s not like O’Reilly went from saying “The Pope is completely wrong about Iraq, he should be ashamed of himself,” to “The Pope’s beliefs were in-line with everything I believe, and he’s always been correct.” That would be a contradiction.

However, stating what he disagree’d with the Pope about in the past — and then after the Pope passes away saying (about the Pope) “Nobody’s perfect, but this guy’s close” is hardly a direct contradiction.

In fact, one could make the argument that he was “almost” perfect, except for his screwed up (in O’Reilly’s mind) political views in regard to the war in Iraq, and specifically the middle east.

Sorry my libby friends, you’re stretchin’ and reachin’ for this one….

Now if you’d like me to go get some Michael Moore contradictions, those will be a little more blantant, up front, and clear-cut. Will that make everyone happy?

    Hah! Didn’t think so.
