i can’t believe people in this country can be so gullable that they can not see through the obvious poloitical ploys of people like john cornyn. people resort to violence for reasons other than “activist judges”, the right’s new propaganda buzz word to be used in an effort to pack the courts with right wing idealogues and religious zealots. well it’s not your country, mr. cornyn. it belongs to the people who know better. so next time you wonder at the violence in this country, ask your self how you could support cutting programs to put police on the street or to provide benefits to first responders and military veterans and their families. you stinking hypocrits should look in the mirror before wondering aloud about the causes of violence in this country. you should be ashamed of yourself.
You can see from the clip that he was trying to choose his words carefully–obviously he failed. The judges that were murdered presided over criminal cases and had nothing to do with political decisions. His correlation between the murder of judges and dislike for their politics is utterly bogus.
i apologize in advance if the following is too cynical, but it’s just something that’s been floating around my brain since i read what cornyn said.
one angle i have not yet heard mentioned which we could exploit is that, since cornyn was presumably referring to the recent lefkow murders in chicago, does cornyn then believe that when a judge rules against a plaintiff in a medical malpractice lawsuit, as judge lefkow did, that that judge exposes herself to violent retaliation by the losing plaintiff? if so, then how does that jibe with his adamant support for tort reform, which could possibly lead to more acts of violence similar to that sufferred by judge lefkow, presuming the judge interprets the law as judge lefkow did? i guess that’s a long-winded way of saying cornyn seems to be confused about the details of the lefkow case, and perhaps he ought to read up on the matter before suggesting the case serves as evidence that judges may face retaliation for their decisions. i guess that was longwinded too. oh well.
I agree that an ad needs to be made out of this and DeLay’s similar comments. Non-right wing nutjobs need to wake up, quit licking wounds, and fight back by showing how scary and out of control these people are!
John Cornyn, the staunch foe of man-turtle love, joined fellow Texan Tom Delay in endorsing violence against state and federal judges this week.
Cornyn had been best known as one of the Senate’s Bestiality Boys, along with his partner, anti-canine consortium zealot Rick Santorum. In the wake of the GOP’s Schiavo implosion, Cornyn made a firm stand against protecting innocent judicial life.
For this latest outrage, the Avenging Angel has a particularly warm seat reserved for Cornyn in Dante’s inner circle.
How did the media in Atlanta (where the late Judge Barnes was killed) and in Chicago (where Judge Lefkow’s family was murdered) cover this? Is there any local outrage?
I think the left has been fantasizing about murderering right wing Presidents for years. There have been books and now a movie starring Sean Penn called “The Assassination of Richard Nixon” which is really just a thinly veiled threat on President Bush’s life.
While I personally don’t think Judges should be murdered for being idiots, I think the left should rein in their idiots first.
I wonder how this jibes with the equally valid theory that senators’ families could be in mortal danger due to the verbal diarrhea spewing from the senators’ mouths.
Oh, I forgot! All the wingnuts are on Cornyn’s side.
Don’t be so hard on Bruce. He’s just a typical brain-dead Republican. He’s just saying that Liberals who might be thinking about committing violence against the President or making a movie about same are just as bad as actual, real violence committed against judges. And it’s just typical Republican “logic.”
Republicans don’t know any better. They were put on Earth so that progressives, liberals and other smart people can learn patience and tolerance.
Thank you, O Lord, for this bounteous gift! I shall not fail thee!
Just from the clip, it didn’t sound like he was justifying violence against judges, just explaining why someone takes that step. Maybe I’m missing something.
Sounds like this is an example of a Republican who is still suffering from the guilt of the USSC’s “political” decision to appoint George Bush president in 2000. Would Cornyn be so circumspect if an army of enraged Gore supporters jumped Scalia in D.C. after his decision five years ago and beat him to a bloody pulp?
I think the right has been fantasizing about murderering left wing Presidents for years. There have been books and holy shit, an actual assassination of John F. Kennedy.
Please read the whole speech and decide for yourself whether WaPo’s juxtaposition of part of one paragraph with Tom DeLay’s intemperate remarks is fair or a cheap shot.
#22, Ridiculous right. You want it both ways? The reasonable commenters above said that it’s ridiculous for Cornyn to attribute violence against judges to their activism. You want to attribute JFK’s assasination to the radical right? I guess the tolerant, thoughtful liberals aren’t as much above the conservatives as they would like to think.
This post is entitled “Cornyn Justfies Violences Against Judges”, yet the video editor SOMEHOW neglected to include the very next line uttered by Cornyn, which went “Certainly without any justification, but a concern that I have.”
He actually said the exact opposite of what you wackos are attributing to him, and you conveniently edited it out – Michael Moore style. So much for honest discussion.
What do you expect from a man who campaigned for George Wallace, graduated from a 4th tier law school, and was ELECTED to the Texas Supreme Court, the most dubious honor available for judges!
Cornyn’s statement is even worse on video than it is on the printed page. On some level, I think I was allowing for the fact that I might have been investing the words with more meaning when I read them than he might have when he spoke them. I was wrong.
John Cornyn belongs to the most virulent strain of demagogue. I don’t know which is worse: the words themselves; or the faux regret with which he puts forth his repulsive thesis. That sad shake of the head, the downcast eyes and the soft, sympathetic tone of voice. This is high-concept propaganda from a pathological manipulator. No Republican who allows this man to go without rebuke deserves to call himself or herself an American.
As I see it, every violent courthouse action has
been caused by someone who felt that the “one
straw that broke the camel’s back” had been
administered to them, but I see absolutely nothing conservative or liberal in any of these actions. Cornyn’s comments says more about his lack of critical thinking ability than about anything political about the judges decisions in any of these cases he mentioned. It seems to me that
Republicans have defined “activist” judges as those who issue rulings that ar not in the Republican platform. Mature thought is becoming an extreme rarity today and that is really sad considering the conveniences that apolitical scientists and thinkers have given us today.

Oh and John, thanks for the link. Those posts you guys put up… I’ve never read such poorly thought out arguments in my entire life. I laughed for a good 10 minutes. Thanks for the entertainment, and keep up the good work.
Here is a little something I posted on “killrighty.net” in the vain hope of getting them to think deeply about this and see the hypocrisy. I post it here for your amusement. You may want to join the fun over there as well. ;-)
Gentleman, let’s take Mr. Cornyn’s words and apply them to another violent situation: Al Qaeda. In the paragraph below I have substituted “Al Qaeda terrorism” wherever Cornyn has referred to courthouse violence and US policy where he has referred to political decisions of the judiciary. How do you think a speech like this would have been received shortly after 9/11? And why do you think that might have been? Extra points for being able to see both sides of this issue. Don’t forget his speech comes shortly after a Judge lost her mother and husband to heinous crime.
And finally, I – I don’t know if there is a cause-and-effect connection but we have seen some recent episodes of Al Qaeda terrorism in this country. Certainly nothing new, but we seem to have run through a spate of Al Qaeda terrorism recently that’s been on the news. And I wonder whether there may be some connection between the perception in some quarters on some occasions where the US is making decisions yet is unaccountable to the Middle East, that it builds up and builds up and builds up to the point where some people engage in  engage in violence. Certainly without any justification but a concern that I have that I wanted to share.
By the way, I called Cornyn’s North Texas office to leave him a piece of my mind and had a bit of trouble getting through. . . Hmm. . . I wonder if this has been a bone of contention with his other constituents? ;-) The woman I talked to clearly had a speech she was reading to me which featured two points: 1) he “clarified” his meaning later in the record and 2) he didn’t really say there was a cause and effect. I told her that I had seen the suggestion with my own eyes on CSPAN and asked her who she expected me to believe: her or my lying eyes and that I was appalled. She became somewhat flustered and said she would pass on my comments. I encourage all of you who live in Texas to do the same. If you are a constituent then it means a lot more than a call from California or Massachussetts.
- Ridiculous Right
thanks for the critique on http://www.killrighty.net. It doesn’t take much thought on your part, however, to sling generic insults. Since you didn’t point out anything specific to argue about, I’ll assume you are being insulting for lack of argument unless you come over and rebut something. The leftist strategy: fight truth with insults.
True John, I will admit at times to stooping to the same disgusting level of discourse as the Right does in their continual barrage of insults, accusations, and demonization the Left.
But I see having an opinion on the quality of work on your site, if it is negative, is considered an insult. Well well well, welcome to the two-party system.
But seriously, you should be the last person to cry and play the insult card. Let’s see.. from your own website..
“John Cornyn attacked by lunatic fringe” – lunatic fringe.. definitely not an insult.
“The loony left is spinning Cornyn’s speculative comment” – oh, loony left. What a respectful moniker. Hmm.. I wonder what inspired my nickname on this board…
“Of course, irresponsible claims are S.O.P. for the lunatic fringe.” – oh, more Lunatic Fringe.. yawn. Maybe you could take up a paypal collection for a thesaurus?
My favorite post on your site, however. is by Damon, who puts a link to a cost of Iraq war calculator ($161,216,717,028 at the time of this post) and then says “At this rate, the war could cost every American $1.00 by 2008. Makes you think, doesn’t it? If you’re against the war, quit paying taxes!”
A US government estimate of the US population in 2005 is 295,734,134. I don’t know what kind of calculator you guys have over there in “ridiculous rightland”, but mine makes the current cost $545 per person. Or $2,180 for a family of four with one income. Or maybe in your world, babies are born with $545 in their tiny little fists?
Now, why don’t you take some time off and listen to some more “Savage” Weiner, who has never been known to spew hateful rhetoric and insults at the Left. Or Rush Limbaugh. Or Ann Coulter. Or Hannity. Or zzzzz….
My psychiatrist would call this a classic case of projection. Cornyn stumbling through a word salad complaining about elected and appointed officials pushing their agenda through in spite of the will of the people…. At first I thought he was going to break down and confess his sins, but alas…. I too fear people will take all they can stands”’snap and resort to violence, but not against judges … scary
- Ridiculous Right, You missed the entire theme of Damon’s post – http://www.killrighty.net/2005/03/15/yah-wal-mart/ – which was to say a bunch a things that made no sense whatsoever. If you will read it again, I think you’ll notice that he’s being facetious.
Secondly, as i said in my previous comment, you were being insulting without making a point… Insults don’t bother me, as long as you back them up. I called you a loony, then proceeded to explain why I thought so. And don’t bother with the “he did it first” argument. Both sides fight fire with fire and you know it. Claiming otherwise is just dumb, if you don’t mind another insult.
“how you could support cutting programs to put police on the street or to provide benefits to first responders and military veterans and their families. you stinking hypocrits should look in the mirror before wondering aloud about the causes of violence in this country. you should be ashamed of yourself.

then you will eventually have the private military contracted to enforce the laws of the neo-con militant state called ameriKKKa. then the court system, that works as good if not better than most like it or not will be marketed by some gop friendly firm as “difunctional” and “something must be done about it right now before we are attacked again”, blah blah balh…
lol…you’re not living anywhere near the outskirts of reality, david. do you honestly believe what you just said? look around you… there are no black helicopters. your phone line is not tapped. no one cares about your emails. There are no secret police staking out your house. There is no satellite watching your every move. Can you even define “neocon”?
Did you know that neocons support the individual right to bear arms, which guarantees citizens protection against a police state or overreaching government?
In anticipation of his inditement by a Grand Jury in Texas, all of this Republican talk of “out of control” Judges is being orchestrated by…you guessed it Tom DeLay, who is trying to use the echo chamber of Limbaugh, Hannity, et all to instill doubt about the Judiciary. This will all be construed as a “continuation of the political attack upon Me by Judges!” Mass impeachment. Scary in the USA and nobody is seeing this set up.
oh.. ‘ridiculous right’… i skimmed your post and found my name.
Here’s where i get comfort:
picturing you, walking to work – buying soy milk, voting along party lines and wearing hemp clothing. my girlfriends a hippie,.. God bless her.
but she knows her place; in the kitchen.. washing dishes and making sure my clothes are folded.. i voted for bush.. mostly because i knew he would kill less people..
my ultimate comfort?.. you, bitching on an internet forum.. quoting and and gathering information/checking my references.. and then me, naked but for a smile- rightly filing your grievances in the ‘cantelopes – cucumber’ file.
truth be told.. to me, it’s all in good fun–i’m prolly more with you than against you,.. i’m for ‘good’ and against ‘bad’.. at least intellectually.. and i think my rhetoric supports that.
This speech was one obviously given to an empty chamber late at night or on a weekend. It shows Mr. Fumblemouth trying to show that if you ain’t got stones, ya got guns.
[...] David Fiske (dbfiske) wrote,@ 2005-04-09 17:52:00 America Marches Toward Fundamentalism, Part 4 I always thought that America was a country of laws, to a fault. Often times, this abuse flies in the face of common sense. Recent events, however, point to a new direction for America – toward a country without judicial independence. It was bad enough when Tom Delay said, in reference to the judges involved with the Schiavo case, “The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior.” But things got worse in a hurry. Next to speak out in the Republican war on Judges was John Cornyn, the junior senator from Texas and a former Texas Supreme Court Justice. On the floor of the senate, he said (emphasis added):”It causes a lot of people, including me, great distress to see judges use the authority that they have been given to make raw political or ideological decisions,” he said. Sometimes, he said, “the Supreme Court has taken on this role as a policymaker rather than an enforcer of political decisions made by elected representatives of the people.”Cornyn continued: “I don’t know if there is a cause-and-effect connection, but we have seen some recent episodes of courthouse violence in this country. . . . And I wonder whether there may be some connection between the perception in some quarters, on some occasions, where judges are making political decisions yet are unaccountable to the public, that it builds up and builds up and builds up to the point where some people engage in, engage in violence. Certainly without any justification, but a concern that I have.” [Here is the full text of Cornyn's speech, and a video of his most controversial remarks.]This man is attacking the two most important pillars of the American political system: separation of powers and the system of checks and balances. Judges are obviously very important, and their political independence was paramount to the founding fathers. The people who need to be held accountable are the politicians and the executive branch that nominated and approved these individuals into their positions of power. Cornyn seems to be justifying domestic terrorism by saying that recent violence against judges. If he had made the same comments about Islamic terrorism against America (Bin Forgotten, anyone?), he would have been marched out of the building and tried for treason. From this post over at AMERICAblog, we learn that the republicans are interested in substantially altering the relationship between the Judicial and legislative branches of government. They recently held a conference to discuss the relationship between the legislative and judicial branches fo government. The organizers of the conference and Congressional staff members who spoke there called for several specific steps: impeaching judges deemed to have ignored the will of Congress or to have followed foreign laws; passing bills to remove court jurisdiction from certain social issues or the place of God in public life; changing Senate rules that allow the Democratic minority to filibuster Mr. Bush’s appeals court nominees; and using Congress’s authority over court budgets to punish judges whom it considers to have overstepped their authority.”I am in favor of impeachment,” Michael Schwartz, chief of staff to Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma, said in a panel discussion on abortion, suggesting “mass impeachment” might be needed. This sounds an awful lot like a pogrom is coming to a courthouse near you! “Mass impeachment” of judges? Under what authority? This could only happen with the explicit support of the executive branch of government, which, considering the circumstances, doesn’t seem too far-fetched an option. You know a person could start reading this page believing that liberals were largely mistreated and really a nice group of folk and not get halfway down this page and reach an entirely opposite conclusion. I have never thought of myself as anything other than a liberal and now suddenly I don’t like the company with which I have found myself.
Suddenly it occurs to me why some republicans I work with are so happy about the changes in congress. We have been given a rope with which to hang ourselves.
wow…. I have nothing else to add… dispicable.

Bruce –
What’s your opinion of the Right’s hatred and assassination fantasies towards Bill and Hillary Clinton?
*Crickets*
Oh and John, thanks for the link. Those posts you guys put up… I’ve never read such poorly thought out arguments in my entire life. I laughed for a good 10 minutes. Thanks for the entertainment, and keep up the good work.
April 6th, 2005 at 10:21 amHere is a little something I posted on “killrighty.net” in the vain hope of getting them to think deeply about this and see the hypocrisy.
April 6th, 2005 at 12:18 pmBy the way, I called Cornyn’s North Texas office to leave him a piece of my mind and had a bit of trouble getting through. . . Hmm. .
April 6th, 2005 at 12:22 pm- Ridiculous Right
April 6th, 2005 at 6:50 pmthanks for the critique on http://www.killrighty.net.
Or Hannity. Or zzzzz….
April 7th, 2005 at 1:18 amMy psychiatrist would call this a classic case of projection. Cornyn stumbling through a word salad complaining about elected and appointed officials pushing their agenda through in spite of the will of the people…. At first I thought he was going to break down and confess his sins, but alas…. I too fear people will take all they can stands”’snap and resort to violence, but not against judges … scary
April 7th, 2005 at 1:25 am- Ridiculous Right, You missed the entire theme of Damon’s post – http://www.killrighty.net/2005/03/15/yah-wal-mart/ – which was to say a bunch a things that made no sense whatsoever.
April 7th, 2005 at 2:32 pm“how you could support cutting programs to put police on the street or to provide benefits to first responders and military veterans and their families. you stinking hypocrits should look in the mirror before wondering aloud about the causes of violence in this country. you should be ashamed of yourself.

then you will eventually have the private military contracted to enforce the laws of the neo-con militant state called ameriKKKa. then the court system, that works as good if not better than most like it or not will be marketed by some gop friendly firm as “difunctional” and “something must be done about it right now before we are attacked again”, blah blah balh…
April 7th, 2005 at 5:16 pmlol…you’re not living anywhere near the outskirts of reality, david. do you honestly believe what you just said? look around you… there are no black helicopters. your phone line is not tapped. no one cares about your emails. There are no secret police staking out your house. There is no satellite watching your every move. Can you even define “neocon”?
April 7th, 2005 at 10:28 pmDid you know that neocons support the individual right to bear arms, which guarantees citizens protection against a police state or overreaching government?
In anticipation of his inditement by a Grand Jury in Texas, all of this Republican talk of “out of control” Judges is being orchestrated by…you guessed it Tom DeLay, who is trying to use the echo chamber of Limbaugh, Hannity, et all to instill doubt about the Judiciary. This will all be construed as a “continuation of the political attack upon Me by Judges!” Mass impeachment. Scary in the USA and nobody is seeing this set up.
April 8th, 2005 at 5:42 pmoh..

August 18th, 2006 at 2:01 pm[...] David Fiske (dbfiske) wrote,@ 2005-04-09 17:52:00 America Marches Toward Fundamentalism, Part 4 I always thought that America was a country of laws, to a fault.
