Drudge Invents Story for DeLay

The Drudge Report (a popular website run by right-wing activist Matt Drudge) has posted an image of an offensive t-shirt, along with a headline “Liberals Sell ‘DeLay Suicide T-shirt.’” It’s clearly a vicious, organized effort to demonize Tom DeLay.

Or not.

The “liberals” selling the shirt are actually…just one random guy named Christopher Goodwin. Christopher runs “Ye Olde Christopher Goodwin Art Shoppe,” an online store
(hosted for free by CafePress.com) where he sells drink coasters, tote bags, and throw pillows emblazoned mostly with images of his own “abstract and representational art”; only two of his featured items are political in nature, the DeLay shirt and a set of shirts that say “Bush Is Vile”. Christopher’s profile explains that he lives in Washington and “enjoys attending Small Claims Court hearings, interrogating his cats, and taking brisk walks on the roof.” According to Alexa.com, Christopher Goodwin’s website is the 2,071,537th most visited site on the Internet; to put that in perspective (and to make clear Goodwin’s profound obscurity) consider that the homepage for Chicken of the Sea tuna is ranked 163,081.

In other words, Drudge made a concerted attempt to find absolutely anything to take the heat off Tom DeLay’s various corruption charges, and the very best he could come up with was a stupid t-shirt from “Ye Olde Christopher Goodwin Art Shoppe.” Lame.

my advice. mark down carefully anyone who supports tom delay in any way. when delay is gone, lets hang his supporters too.

  2. Alan Vander Wey says:

Buy a couple of T-shirts while you are at it. If the guy doesn’t like Delay, he can’t be all that bad.

  3. asshat says:

So he should have said “Liberal Sells ‘DeLay Suicide T-shirt.’â€?? At least the link went someplace unlike most of his “Developing….” headlines which link back to his homepage.

  4. Jonathan says:

No, he shouldn’t have said anything at all. The “story” is obviously a desperate and misleading attempt to help Tom DeLay. It’s on par with saying “liberals accuse Tom DeLay of being a child pornographer”, then linking to one guy who said something along those lines anonymously on Usenet.

    It’s obvious, and it’s lame.

Overall, I’d say Drudge is getting his ass handed to him by Raw Story, both in terms of getting scooped and in terms of accuracy. A shame anyone still looks at Drudge, but we know some do…

  5. Jason says:

Sleazy, corrupt, desperate. The most disturbing aspect of the recent Delay-athon is that compared to the real architects of Bushworld Part II (the Rove, Cheney, Feith, Libby, Perle, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz’s of the world) this guy is a small time slimeball. The rest of these clowns are world-class evildoers. When will the righties realize just how wrong they are?

  6. common sense says:

Virtually everything that comes from Drudge is invented. I am still wondering whether or not he has apologized for “Kerry’s girlfriend”. Drudge is a full-blown liar.

  7. common sense says:

The righties are far too delusional to ever admit that they are wrong about anything.

  8. Twisted S Snake says:

Matt Drudge is his own lover.

  9. Knox Bronson says:

Anybody that puts “ye olde” in front of anything is a dork.

I’d say let’s put Matt Drudge in ye olde stock, but I’m afraid he’d enjoy it way too much, esp. blind-folded.

  10. roger molett says:

notice that drudge has a link to the site. He is probably getting ad fees for pointing people to the site. That is real balls to appear to criticize something as you profit from it.

  11. Christopher Goodwin says:

Well, I’m the “dork” who created the DeLay shirt. My statement on the whole affair follows.
Earlier today, I came to my own conclusion the the Tom DeLay suicide shirt
was in poor taste and could legitimately cause offense to people who have
had to deal with suicide in their own families. I decided to pull the shirt
    from the web site.
Before I was able to take the shirt down, however, Drudge had posted it on
his site, and I was immediately inundated with hate mail. As I’ve posted on
my web site, http://www.goodwinart.com, I unreservedly apologize to anyone I
offended with the shirt. I made a mistake.
Someone pointed out to me today that, by admitting I was wrong, I’ve shown a
great deal more character the Mr. DeLay himself, who, it seems, can never
    admit to any wrongdoing.
For the record, I do not wish Tom DeLay dead, and of course I never expected
him to heed the shirt’s request. I just want him to resign.
I will be putting another anti-Tom DeLay shirt up for sale; this one,
    however, will not mention suicide.
    Sincerely,
    Christopher Goodwin

  12. ttagaris says:

    Serious question, Christopher.

How many shirts were bought today before you pulled it? What do you estimate you might have sold in the full 24 had you left it up?

    Tim

  13. Shoeless Joe Stalin says:

Yeah. You were freeped. More people want that shirt, and will pay good money for it, than are offended by it. It’s first amendment con law 101. It’s as American as free market, free enterprise capitalism and mom’s apple pie. I love my “Die! Yuppie Scum!” T-shirt almost as much as my old “Newt Hates Me” T-shirt.

  14. Christopher Goodwin says:

I sold about 6 of them, and keep getting email asking how to acquire them. But I’m not going to put it back up. I’ve heard from enough well-meaning people who’ve had to deal with suicide that I won’t sell it. Of course, I’ve got a crapload of extremely nasty emails, far worse than anything my shirt said. It’s been a fairly demoralizing day.

  15. Shoeless Joe Stalin says:

My, my. Bye, bye, Miss American pie, drove my chevy to the levy and threw myself in the drink.

  16. Shoeless Joe Stalin says:

Anyway, you were freeped. That’s the new and improved America for you.

  17. Shoeless Joe Stalin says:

    Freeped

Do a google search on Hitlery Clintoon and read some of that stuff Christopher. I wonder how much hate mail they get. But I understand your position, and that’s why we ARE better than they are.

  18. Joe Bua says:

I still fail to understand why anyone gives Grudge any credibility? Don’t comment on him! Did you know that before his fame he was selling logo t-shirts at the CBS store on Beverly Blvd. in Los Angeles?

  19. The Witch says:

    Chris,

You seem like a decent guy. You’re welcome to put an ad on my baby blog anytime. :)

  20. nwgal says:

If those freepers didn’t have someone to hate, they literally wouldn’t know what to do with themselves. Anyone is better than they are.

  21. Shoeless Joe Stalin says:

Chris is to be commended. I am just suspicious of anyone who e-mailed him claiming to be more incensed by the reference to suicide than the bashing of a corrupt and criminal bug in politics, no matter how sincere they were.

Allow me to suggest an alternative, (it’s happy hour here):

Everybody out of the pool! That’s no Baby Ruth! That’s Tom DeLay, a big, fat, stinking, Texas-sized turd!

If you are unfamiliar with the works of Matt Drudge, consider yourself lucky. Mr. Drudge has been a mouth piece for the anti-American Ultra Right Wing for some time. In fact, I am willing to suspect that if you only read his site for the last few years…

  23. seph says:

It must be nice to be Drudge, from the perspective of effort-reward ratios, anyway. Spit out some crap like this, call it reporting , get cited as a breaking source… come here ego, my darling pet, let me stroke you. I caught his radio show the other day while listening to Wingnut Radio for novlety value the other day. He’d come in and literally talk for 30-45 seconds between 5 minute sets of commercials. Is that normal? It seems subpar, even relative to Drudge’s usual body of output.

  24. Jesus H Democrat says:

Christopher: Put that shirt back up. You have as much a right to sell that shirt as someone has a right to express to you their views on suicide.

What if everyone emailed you about some experience that you didn’t share and expected you to hew to it? You’d be living everyone’s life but your own.

How often does Ann Coulter un-publish something that some (rational) person disagrees with?

This whole country is becoming a battleground, and we non-Repugs (do we even have a name–”liberal” and “lefty are LAME!) seem to have been trained to be gentlemanly and fold up at the first sign of someone boo-hooing. If this is going to be a civil war, our troops can’t keep bowing out to “be the better…person”.

Stand up, do your thing, be liberal (or whatever we call it) but stop being so frigging sensitive, esp. to the enemy.

  25. Tom Courbat says:

You did the right thing pulling the suicide shirt. It is way too personal for many people and you can accomplish the same purpose by showing a “self-destruct” parody.

You are to be commended for being against this SOB and for your sensitivity to those who have suffered the terrible experience of a suicide in their family or of a friend.

    Hang in there.

    Tom

  26. Jesus H Democrat says:

Many loved ones of mine have had horrible experiences with people disagreeing with me and my views. To honor their shining spirits and immutable, saintly souls (living and dead) I respectfully (and tearfully) submit that everyone disagreeing with my post and opinions remove theirs…out of respect and deference to my superior and morally higher request.

Seeing the amount of grief it has caused my loved and closest ones, I appreciate, in advance, everone’s sensitivity to the issue in removing their disagreement.

It would mean a lot to old, dead Unky and cute little living Tommie!

  27. Shoeless Joe Stalin says:

I remember fondly all those lonely protests outside of the theaters that showed that horrible film glorifying suicide, MASH. No, that’s not right. It was those horrible films that glorified crucifiction. The ones by Scorcese and Gibson.

  28. patriot65 says:

Hey, it’s bullshit you took your shirt off sale. And this coming from a “conservative”. Even WE know that the far right-wing jihadists are just as bad for this country as the far left-wing anti-Godists. I thought it was funny and if you were making money, then so be it. Hey, I figure if a guy can make 300,000 a year killing babies, then a regular Joe Schmo should be able to make money from selling his t-shirts. Fuck em if they can’t take a joke! Isn’t this a “free market” society? I say it’s capitalism at it’s finest!

  29. Jay says:

patriot65, you come across as a sensible person that can see both sides and recognizes how insane things have gotten on the right-wing (and the left). However my question is this: Do you think that Democrats, lefties, liberals, whatever you call the other side, really WANT abortion to be a resort? My understanding is that most of the arguments made by Dems in Congress are around doing everything possible to prevent unwanted pregnancies (sex education, birth control, alternatives in life, stronger middle-class, etc.) but not taking away the right to an abortion as a last (and horrible) resort?

Abortions have INCREASED since Clinton left the White House. Why do you suppose that is?

Don’t mean to start a new topic here…but I had to ask.

    Thanks.

  30. Joe says:

Christopher, both my aunt and grandfather committed suicide and I BEG you to continue to sell that t-shirt. For gosh sakes man, your an artist and that shirt is sweet poetry.

  31. patriot65 says:

Hey, my quip on abortion wasn’t meant to denigrate any one particular political ideology. I’m neither republican nor democrat. I go with George Washington on this one and belive that a 2 party system is the very thing that’s pushing this country down the proverbial shit shack hole with a size 12 plunger. As an artist, I actually find it offensive that Christopher caved in to the puling of a few societal infants. We all have been devestated in one way or another by suicide wether personally or by association. That’s not the point. It’s a BIG crap sandwich and we all have to take a bite. I just wish I had thought of it first, and the only changes I would make is to put it on an actual letter and even go as far as making it look like White House letterhead! Hmm, food for thought Christopher! I don’t want to change the subject either, but numbers are numbers, and this country has lost in excess of 100 billion dollars in tax revenue alone, not to mention the HUGE vacuum in the middle class that has been created by abortion. And why do you think all of the illegal immigrants in this country have found it so easy to find the middle class, blue collar jobs? I view abortion as an attempt to eradicate the middle class completely in this country because it’s the working people that make it run. And again, numbers don’t lie. It’s the low to mid middle class white women who are the biggest worshippers at the altar of abortion. Just think, if 10 million illegal immigrants weren’t here, if those 10 million jobs were filled by middle class Americans, the problems we have with low wages, health care, ect. ect. wouldn’t be as big as they are.

Oh wait! I forgot; when someone on the “Right” does it it’s “just a
joke”. It’s only when a “leftist” does it that it becomes “sick”…

    Never mind.”
