McCain Opposes “Nuclear Option”

Overshadowed by the nascent “Shay’s Rebellion” was Sen. McCain’s major statement yesterday opposing use of the “nuclear option.” Though some conservative senators have already declared their reluctance to go along with Sen. Frist’s plan to override the filibuster and ram through President Bush’s radical judicial nominees, McCain is no doubt the most high-profile conservative senator to declare his explicit opposition (pdf):

Sen. McCAIN: …I think that there’s a problem with a slippery slope. I think that there’s a problem with really changing the environment of the Senate and we are different from the House and if we don’t protect the rights of the minority, someday history shows that we won’t always be in the majority. …

SCHIEFFER: Well, can I just ask you the direct question? Are you opposed to doing away with the filibuster, Senator?

Sen. McCAIN: Yes.

  1. Ted says:

McCain is not a conservative, you moron! He is the main maverick of the GOP. He goes against the Party line more than most true conservatives can stomach. Get your shit straight!

  2. Ted says:

If Frist doesn’t use the nuclear option, he has no shot at the nomination in’08. The base will never forgive him for backing down from the threats of the party of obstruction, the dems. He must do it if he has the votes. We need true conservative judges on the courts to balance out all of these activist liberal judges who legislate from the bench. That is the only way you lefties can get your policies rammed down the throats of the American people. You know you can’t win at the ballot box, so you go judge shopping and find a sympathetic court to force your radical agenda on the people against their will. That is why we say the courts are out of control. The ELECTED representatives of the people write the laws, not unelected and unaccountable judges. I hope Sen. Frist has the cahones to use the CONSTITUTIONAL OPTION!!!!!!!!! Teach the left a lesson and show them who is in charge of this country!!!!!!!!

  3. Krazny says:

right now its idiots like you. In case you haven’t noticed your so called conservitive types have really fucked us up at this point. If Bill Clinton had not gotten things running right I shudder to think how bad it could have been.

  4. Sherman says:

Thank you to someone for finally pointing this out. Someday Mr. Frist and his party will be on the other side of this issue. Someday they will have to face the consequences of this reckless change in rules. Someday the pendulum will swing the other way. The only real question is: How far do they want it to swing? Bravo Senator McCain.

  5. BalRog says:

Ted is in fine form today, writing:

If Frist doesn’t use the nuclear option, he has no shot at the nomination in’08.

    One can only hope…

The base will never forgive him for backing down from the threats of the party of obstruction, the dems.

Boy is that ever the pot calling the kettle black! There are countless examples of Republicans using the filibuster to confound the Democrats when the Democrats owned the Senate.

He must do it if he has the votes. We need true conservative judges on the courts to balance out all of these activist liberal judges who legislate from the bench.

Seems to me that we already have that, as the Schiavo case illustrates. Every ruling was by-the-book case law, interpreted as such by conservative-appointee judges. I think the real problem now is in the “Judgemental Congress” that thinks it can judge better than judges and diagnose better than doctors based only on one-page synopses and snippets of video. You want to talk about arrogance! You want to talk about hubris! Look no further than Frist and DeLay.

That is the only way you lefties can get your policies rammed down the throats of the American people. You know you can’t win at the ballot box, so you go judge shopping and find a sympathetic court to force your radical agenda on the people against their will. That is why we say the courts are out of control.

Actually we know we can win at the ballot box. The pendulum is already swinging our way. DeLay is a sinking ship, and the rats are already abandoning him. You’ll see.

We are being patient and persistent, speaking truth to power. And when people are finally tired of the GOP’s comforting lies, we will be there with the same truth that we have been speaking throughout this entire scandalous mess.

Think you used enough exclamation points there, teddy boy?

First of all, there is already a conservative majority in the judiciary. But guess what. They are judges first and ideologues second. In the Schiavo case, conserative judge after conservative judge ruled in accordance with long-established case law. GET OVER IT!

Second, the country is divided almost exactly 50-50. Stop pretending that you have some sort of mythical mandate to run roughshod over half of the country. It is wrong. It is untrue. And what is more, it is sowing the wind. The pendulum is swinging back. Are you ready to reap the whirlwind?

  6. Ted says:

BalRog, we are going to be in charge for a long time. There is no pendulum by the way. When we took over in ‘94, we replaced that old grandfather clock with a sleak digital one and we control all the buttons on it. The American people saw how you guys ran things for far too long. It’s our turn now, and we aren’t going to let you commies have our country back ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did I use enough exclamation points for you there BalRog, you commie asshole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Viva Delay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. BalRog says:

Look, I understand that you have nothing to say, Teddy bear, but your ad hominem bloviating is particularly pathetic.

Digital clock? Wotta laffer! Go away lightweight.

  8. kindness says:

Hey Ted. If you have something useful to say, say it. You are acting like a Troll who wants to be tossed from the group.

  9. Justin says:

*blink* What world does Ted live in. Sure isn’t this one.

  10. Krazny says:

Not sure when wanting freedom meant being a commie. If I wanted to live in a police state I would vote republican.

  11. Krazny says:

another thougth, wasn’t the republicans who shut down the government instead of passing Clintons budget bills? How obstructionist was that?

  12. yankee_rob says:

    Ted,
You haven’t a clue what you are talking about. According to the GOP an activist judge is anyone that calls a verdict you don’t agree with. It is people like you that want to see this country turned from a democracy to a dictatorship!

  13. Scott says:

More dead judges means they more judicial job openings. Which means they get to appoint even more wingnuts. If its good enough for Pinochet, its good enough for America!

  14. David says:

    Ted,
We can see by your outburst in #6 that you’re not a christian conservative, just an illiterate one.

  15. Frank says:

I need 8640 personal responses to the ‘Nuclear Option’ threat. That’s the number of one-minute speeches (approx. 250 words each) it will take to ‘filibuster’ for 24 hours. You don’t have to have any intellectual insights -rather, more importantly, I want your personal fears and concerns..
