If House Maj. Leader Tom DeLay “chose to resign as majority leader until these matters are resolved, that’s probably not the worst idea.” — Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO), Denver Post, 4/15/05
I emailed my congressman, Dan Lungren, a few days ago asking for his position re Tom Delay, but he hasn’t been willing to make that public as of now. My guess is that he, along with most of the GOP congressfolks, are still trying to work up enough spit to wet a finger well enough to determine how the wind is blowing. Slippery elm, anyone?
Actually they have already found a new pile of crap to hide behind (they hope till it all blows over). I speak of Frists eliminating the filibuster. Look at what Frist is scheduled to do this weekend with the right wing christian demogogues. They are putting up a weekend long slaging of Democrat, saying that democrats are against religion because of the judicial thing.
I seriously think this is a threefer.
1) it changes the medias attention defecit disorder to follow their little carnival and forget about Tom DeLay for a while.
2) it puts republicans firmly back in the clutches of the “American Taliban” (OK, the fascist version of the Taliban).
3) I really think the extreme right feels their grasp on the middle slipping away. If they can jack up the rhetoric in an us vs. them, evil vs. good way, they can refocus the media attention away from what turns people off by extremes to begin with and quite possibly get their gutting of the filibuster too.
Either way, we need folks to say what fanatics the Frist/DeLay crowd is, especially this weekend. That has to include the middle and people of faiths (ie – religion), all religions to come out and say that Frist/DeLay do NOT represent their views.
Tom is Texas Toast, and a neocon liability these days, and will be sacrificed for the Good of the Party, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the rings of investigation will expand beyond his various corruptions, although they should. The boys in the Republican cloakroom will be protected as Bush reinstates the draft, or some similar stupid and unpopular move, that will dominate the news and leave the other GOP miscreants untouched.
Tom Delay is of his own makings. He is solely responsible for his troubles and should step down with a full investigation to follow. The guy is too scary.
What has Delay done that is illegal? He is a politician, the same as the rest of congress, and has done nothing different except make comments that have enraged the left liberal media. This will blow over. The Republican party is standing behind Delay and will not ask for his resignation as they did with Lott and Gingrinch. The media needs to move on.
