The TIME distortion that enrages Ann Coulter:
“Why can’t they just photograph conservatives straight?!” blasted this week’s TIME magazine covergirl Ann Coulter. … The photographer, Platon, appears to have used a wide “Fisheye” lense for the cover snap, stretching Coulter’s legs and feet — while shrinking the rest of her body.
The TIME distortion that irks ThinkProgress:
Coulter has a reputation for carelessness with facts, and if you Google the words “Ann Coulter lies,” you will drown in results. But I didn’t find many outright Coulter errors.
What a joke. Below are just a few of Ann’s most recent outright errors, distortions, and lies:
Coulter lied and distorted to defend fake reporter “Jeff Gannon”; falsely attacked President Clinton’s remarks on the tsunami relief effort; falsely claimed that the New York Times op-ed page “outed” gays and quoted NYT columnists out of context to defend inauguration costs; distorted and attacked Sen. Kennedy’s major Iraq speech; claimed that reports of hundreds of tons of munitions being looted in Iraq were “false”; distorted a 2002 article by New York Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof that predicted the difficulties of the Iraq war; falsely implied that the group behind a December 21 attack on American soldiers in Mosul was not linked to Al Qaeda; defended Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld by falsely claiming that a reporter had devised a controversial question a soldier posed to Rumsfeld; falsely claimed that the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights was unable to identify any African-Americans in Florida who had been wrongly disenfranchised during the 2000 election (”We’ve found more WMDs in Iraq than we’ve found disenfranchised blacks in Florida”); and printed scores of errors (as well as specious ‘corrections’ of those errors) in her books.
Time puts Coulter on cover, screws up big time

April 18th, 2005 at 3:38 pmMy favorite “outright Coulter error” was her Nexis search on the name “Selma”.
She claimed that the NYTs(?) had run hundreds of stories on the anniversary of the Selma Civil Rights march, when in fact all but a few were obituaries for women named, you guessed it, Selma.
April 18th, 2005 at 3:51 pmThe picture does make her look like the wicked witch of the west. So it is just being accurate.
April 18th, 2005 at 3:52 pmAn accurate picture of Ann would prominently show his adam’s apple.
April 18th, 2005 at 3:55 pmIt’s Edwina Scissorfeet!
Little Annie Tranny has nothign to complain about re Time.
Meanwhile I’m sure that La Drudge is waiting anxiously for his close-up.
April 18th, 2005 at 4:00 pmDon’t forget her gaffe about Canada having troops in Vietnam…
April 18th, 2005 at 4:02 pmIsn’t that how she always looks?
April 18th, 2005 at 4:05 pmMy favorite Coulter smear was when she said Cleland was on a drinking binge with his buddies when that grenade exploded and he lost three limbs.
April 18th, 2005 at 4:14 pmThe problem isn’t that Time doesn’t have researchers; it’s that Time doesn’t care, and the reporter probably believes Coulter’s lies to be true. Or if nothing else, would cite a difference of opinion; as facts are now considered to be subjective these days.
As for Coulter, I just don’t understand why everyone treats her like she’s a political pundit. She’s clearly just a comedian. Read her stuff. She has absolutely no interest in the truth, and is just looking for punchlines. Her left-wing equivalent is Maureen Dowd, who never heard snark that she wasn’t willing to paraphrase into her own words. The only difference is that Dowd is far classier, far more willing to attack her own side (especially if they’re named Gore or Kerry), and isn’t as desperate for cheap laughs.
But neither of them performs any serious analysis on the world of politics; nor do they let facts get in the way of their targets. They’re entertainers, not pundits. Fact-checking them is like fact-checking Gallagher or Seinfeld. You might laugh, but the sock really didn’t disappear in your laundry and you’re really only there to see the watermelon busted open.
April 18th, 2005 at 4:14 pmThe think about Coulter is that she isn’t careless. She clerked for the Supreme Court. I don’t care where you land on the ideological spectrum. You simply don’t get a job like that without a fundamental grasp of verifying facts.
Coulter is a stone-cold liar. When she “errs” it is wholly intentional and completely calculated.
…and anyone writing a Time article knows this as well. That means you John Cloud. You are a liar and a shill.
April 18th, 2005 at 4:15 pmGosh I wish I had a Time subscription so I could cancel.
April 18th, 2005 at 4:18 pmI seem to recall that she claimed Alxander Hamilton had been president and that Thomas Jefferson was never president in one contentious debate.
April 18th, 2005 at 4:27 pmWacky right, wacky left-no difference.
April 18th, 2005 at 4:31 pmDidn’t she say, on Canadian television, that Canada had sent troops to Viet Nam? Didn’t the host correct her, on the air?
April 18th, 2005 at 4:33 pmWacky right, wacky left-no difference.
Except the wacky right drives the Republican party while the wacky left drives a VW bus that reeks of pot.
April 18th, 2005 at 4:37 pmAnn is Skeletor. That is a fact.
April 18th, 2005 at 4:37 pmI had a TIME subscription….I cancelled it today at lunch. That cover made me lose mine.
April 18th, 2005 at 4:51 pmHa Ha
April 18th, 2005 at 4:54 pmSo ‘le Skank’ hits the cover of Time.
I didn’t know that rag still existed. I stoped reading it in the 70’s.
You want an enumeration of Coulter lies, errors, and distortions? Jeez, start here.
April 18th, 2005 at 4:55 pmMore Coulter lies? Go to the Howler and search for “coulter.”
April 18th, 2005 at 4:57 pmHey, folks, you all should write Time about this. Believe it or not, they get letters. That’s why the wing nutters get what they want – in addition to bitching to each other websites, they flood the media outlets (mostly Astroturf, but that counts too). Do it folks!
April 18th, 2005 at 5:02 pmShe also repeatedly insisted on the CBC’s Fifth Estate that Canada sent troops to Viet Nam…
go here to watch the clip:
http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/sticksandstones.html
THE EXCHANGE:
Coulter: “Canada used to be one of our most loyal friends and vice-versa. I mean Canada sent troops to Vietnam – was Vietnam less containable and more of a threat than Saddam Hussein?”
McKeown interrupts: “Canada didn’t send troops to Vietnam.”
Coulter: “I don’t think that’s right.”
McKeown: “Canada did not send troops to Vietnam.”
Coulter (looking desperate): “Indochina?”
McKeown: “Uh no. Canada …second World War of course. Korea. Yes. Vietnam No.”
Coulter: “I think you’re wrong.”
McKeown: “No, took a pass on Vietnam.”
Coulter: “I think you’re wrong.”
McKeown: “No, Australia was there, not Canada.”
Coulter: “I think Canada sent troops.”
McKeown: “No.”
Coulter: “Well. I’ll get back to you on that.”
McKeown tags out in script:
“Coulter never got back to us — but for the record, like Iraq, Canada sent no troops to Vietnam.”
April 18th, 2005 at 5:06 pmso now wide angle lenses are part of the vast liberal media conspiracy? who knew…. that must explain why i own 4 of them.
April 18th, 2005 at 5:07 pmDid the article cover her pre-on-air ritual wherein she consumes several small live mice?
April 18th, 2005 at 5:13 pmA prior poster erroneously describes Coulter as a former Supreme Court clerk. This poster has likely mistaken Coulter for her fellow blond pundit, Laura Ingraham. Coulter was NOT a Supreme Court clerk. She was an undistinguished student at the University of Michigan Law School, then proceeded to a brief tenure at a well-regarded New York law firm. Please do not elevate her credentials. Even the shoddiest of judges (or justices) would not employ her.
April 18th, 2005 at 5:14 pmWacky right, wacky left-no difference.

April 18th, 2005 at 5:14 pm————————————
So Torture, 1550 Dead Americans, 100,000 dead Iraqis, $250 Billion, and our allies trading weapons with our enemies doesn’t bother you? Enjoying that fencepost are ya?
Space- Coulter did not clerk for a justice of the Supreme Court. She did clerk for a federal appellate judge, Pasco Bowman II.
April 18th, 2005 at 5:21 pmCoulter is Karl Rove’s Eva Braun.
April 18th, 2005 at 5:39 pmExcept the third reich was smart enough to hide Eva.
April 18th, 2005 at 5:46 pm“Did the article cover her pre-on-air ritual wherein she consumes several small live mice?” Hey! Maybe that’s what the “adam’s apple” thing is all about….Anaconda only has them part-way down her throat! Man, it’s a good thing she doesn’t eat cats, she’d have a hellova goiter!
April 18th, 2005 at 5:49 pmWowser- Wow! Great comment. I won a TIME student news something or other award about 40 years ago. Quit reading it about 35 years ago.
April 18th, 2005 at 5:50 pmAnybody know what year she graduated from UM Law? As an alumnus of that august institution, I’m curious if she was one of my classmates. She seems to be careful not to tell the year, as that would be a big clue as to her real age. I’m only 50, though, so she was probably well before my time . . .
April 18th, 2005 at 6:02 pmI believe AC graduated Michigan Law in 1988. I’m surprised she clerked for Pasco Bowman, who, while right-wing, is considered a serious person.
April 18th, 2005 at 6:49 pmYou’re ignoring her charming asides on Christianity, International Relations, and more. A personal favorite: her Christmas message
This being the cheery follow up to her earlier advice that “We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity.” Scroll down on that link, btw, for a cute picture of Ann and her glock. I had a little fun w/ this back in January, but I’m sadly not surprised to see that Time featured her.
Just try dealing w/ the ugly truth. The political and cultural discourse has shifted so much, Ann’s becoming increasingly mainstream.
Those who say she does’t matter? Well, dudes and dudettes, she’s packing campuses, selling millions of books, and even has Pat Sajak joining in on the liberal bashing.
So figure it out for yourselves.
April 18th, 2005 at 7:21 pmthe only meaningful response is to cancel one’s subscription to “Time” – I did it some time ago after an equally disgusting cover story and have felt wonderful ever since. Not having Time in my mailbox – where it was for decades – turns out to be a liberating thing. Who knew?
April 18th, 2005 at 7:39 pm#21 ZEN_MORE:”Hey, folks, you all should write Time about this.”
Done. I c&p’ed it to them.
April 18th, 2005 at 8:14 pmWhat’s sad is I actually know someone who works for a bookstore who actually thinks Coulter’s “how to talk to a liberal” is the best thing they have ever read.
April 18th, 2005 at 9:36 pmre: sending letters to time.
apparently it does work. when this time cover story was first posted on the net, it included a picture of the conservative satire group “communists for kerry,” with a caption identifying them as actual leftist protestors demonstrating against coulter.
i, among others, sent letters to time berating them for their obvious error. they have since corrected it.
please read my not so nice letter on my blog here.
April 18th, 2005 at 9:51 pmalso, you would think that if the camera adds 10 pounds, she might start to look normal.
but noooo…..
April 18th, 2005 at 9:51 pmAny proof that she really finished all of the course work needed to get her law degree?
April 18th, 2005 at 10:22 pmIndeed Ann did graduate from U-M law, with honors. (yech)
She was classmate of two folks i know while I was a puny undergrad in Ann Arbor as well.
A source very close to President Duderstadt speculated that Bush 41’s U-M commencement address in 1991 that railed against “political correctness” (written by Tony Snow) was partly inspired by Coulter who had been a charter member of U-M Law’s Federalist Society Chapter.
Wierd connections everywhere……
April 18th, 2005 at 10:51 pmWhen Time posts someone or something on its cover, it has reached its watershed mark and it’s all downhill from there. Remember the “new powerhouse economy” of Japan right before they went into the tank? This is the kiss of death for Coulter.
April 18th, 2005 at 11:56 pmAll the name calling…really, it’s a like reading a freeper thread. Sad.
April 19th, 2005 at 1:19 amI agree with Pat. Too much name-calling. Attacking a person does not substitute for making a point.
April 19th, 2005 at 2:27 amThe above posts number about one-fourth personal attacks/name-calling to three-fourths attacking what Coulter has actually said. Compare this to Coulter’s own writing.
April 19th, 2005 at 3:08 amFor God’s sake, give the girl a sandwich! And by the way, I’d cancel my subscription if I hadn’t already done so when they named George W. Bush Man? of the Year. If I hadn’t, this would have been the final straw. This woman is the biggest hatemonger on the planet. She even makes Rush look like a pussycat. Time might as well start stamping “Fair and Balanced” on their covers from now on. Sad!
April 19th, 2005 at 3:59 amShe is the epitome of the hatred that the right-wing spews every day. She will get hers at some point, just sit back and watch!
April 19th, 2005 at 4:54 amShe is read by too many right wing sheeples to be regarded as just a comedian. Her deliberate lies and distortions just fuel hatred and, at best, confusion. Remember, she was the one who perpetrated the lie that AL Gore used the word “invented” when referring to the internet. She is another sick asset to the right wing, just like O’Rielly and Hannity.
April 19th, 2005 at 9:42 amGood job, Time. A hate-mongering racist who made a career out of writing books of lies and distortions as well as taking part of a plot to destroy a sitting president. Next thing you know Time will be covering Adolph Hit….oh, never mind.
April 19th, 2005 at 10:33 amTo the people complaining about name calling:
http://www.sesamestreet.com
They have wonderful games and coloring pages.
April 19th, 2005 at 3:39 pmI do believe it’s high time that one gets serious about boycotting Time-Warner. That’s right. Cancel your AOL account. Call your cable company and cancel all viewing packages that carry any Time-Warner product, or, if that’s not possible, request that they offer an extended cable without Time-Warner packages. Find which movies are WB products, and don’t go, don’t rent them or buy them, no matter if they are good. Cancel your “Story of Great Music” series. Cancel those compendia of early rock, country-western or big-band-girl hits. Those of you who own shares in Time-Warner, write letters to the Board. They will be heard far more than letters to the editor at Time. And now that it’s proxy season, withhold your votes from management. Go to the annual meeting and put a shareholder resolution on the floor demanding that the right wing be stripped of power in the company. Register as an OBO (Objecting Beneficial Owner) holding stock in a street name(i.e., shares held by a brokerage that you control), and form an association with other T-W OBOs that will both withhold votes and proclaim its long-term intention to obtain 4% of the shares, defined by law as a”controlling interest” in a company. Write to the advertisers who advertise in Time and advertise on WB Network, CNN, and CNN Headline News. Tell them you will find other products if they continue to support this company.
This offense by Time doesn’t deserve just an apology, nor does it deserve that simply one or two editors be chastised. Those on the corporate board who sought to implement this must be brought down. Make sure they know this will not go unpunished.
April 19th, 2005 at 4:46 pmAll she needs is broom and a pointy hat.
April 19th, 2005 at 9:06 pmFor the first time in my life I think Bill O’Reilly was right about one thing: who does Coulter influence?
April 20th, 2005 at 3:54 amthe only thing I thought when I first saw the cover was that it defiles that beautiful barcelona chair.
April 20th, 2005 at 1:09 pmTime’s current beatification of W and Coulter couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that Time Warner had been found guilty of fraud and was waiting the government prosecutors to announce their judgement against them could it?
April 20th, 2005 at 3:46 pmFolks, TIME’s founder was Skull and Bones – nuff said
April 20th, 2005 at 4:17 pmHellooooo, Coulter complaining about the cover is simply the usual ploy to increase the magazine’s exposure.
I am boycotting TW starting today.
April 20th, 2005 at 4:41 pmDoes anyone know of any links to websites dedicated to Coulters lies? I only know of one called anticoulter, but it hasn’t been updated in over three years. There must be some other sites. The right always seems to beat the left come election time with all their websites dedicated to Dan Rather and Michael Moore. We on the left have much more to choose from when it comes to right leaning lying pundits and celebrities… I would think I’d find more websites dedicated to the lies and distortions of high profile rightwing celebrities…i.e. Malkin, Coulter, Hannity, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, etc…
April 20th, 2005 at 4:47 pmOh by the way, here’s the address to anticoulter…It meticulously chronicles Coulters lies up to 2002.
http://users.rcn.com/skutsch/anticoulter/index.html
April 20th, 2005 at 4:48 pmThe bathrobe wearing right wing bloggers are going to keep this issue under their mattresses.
April 20th, 2005 at 6:00 pmActually, I find the fisheye photo a brilliant narrative on Ann and what she does. Our attention is forced first to disproportionately large feet in enormous black pointed shoes. Those ungainly clodhoppers are actually Coulter’s most valuable assets: Her formula is that she initiates every attack on each rival by first landing on them with a leaden thud, and then savagely, unthinkingly trying to kick ‘em into submission. Unfortunately for Ann, her weapons are easily turned aside without the element of surprise, because her blows, though cudgel-like are delivered without benefit of fact or contextual truth. Fittingly, the fish-eye portrait describes an out of focus head, located at the greatest distance from the viewer as though irrelevant. What more need one say?
April 20th, 2005 at 6:46 pmSo Ann thinks that the cover picture makes her look like a pinhead.
umm….Ann, you are a pinhead.
That is the only thing accurate about the Time cover story. The rest of it is an ass-kissing puff piece.
April 21st, 2005 at 6:41 amWhen I first saw the cover with the obvious distortion, I immediately flashed on the old Lily Tomlin character–Edith Ann sitting on an oversized chair, where the illusion is done largely because Tomlin’s legs dangling over the front.
April 21st, 2005 at 11:21 amIs Time making a comment on AC’s infantilism?
A largely irrelevant, fading dinosuar of a news magazine seeks publicity by featuring a flame thrower on their cover and then does their usual job of writing a long, boring piece about her. Zzzzzz…Zzzzzz…Zzzzzz who cares.
April 21st, 2005 at 12:14 pmMy letter to Time:
Dear Editors:
I have to believe that somewhere the specter of Henry Luce is doing the proverbial spinning at the editorial decision to turn his magazine into a matchmaking service for its journalists. Such is the only inference I can make of the love paean-cum-feature article on Ann Coulter.
That Ann Coulter can be placed among the influential in American media is indisputable. But the real question that should have been asked is “Why?” Ms. Coulter’s grasp on facts are tenuous at best, something that John Cloud blithely glosses over as he rhapsodizes over her bona fides. His statement that a Google search of “Ann Coulter lies” did not uncover any real deceptions is laughably disingenuous. My own search resulted in 227,000 hits and some of the first sites to come up were reputable, non-partisan sites that clearly elucidated one factually inaccurate statement after another. Time’s editorial staff does not do itself any favors when such lazy vetting and intellectually dishonest statements are allowed to go to press.
In his desire to portray her polemic and inflammatory statements as “quaint,” Cloud misses the bigger picture. This country has become more and more polarized and less tolerant of dissenting voices. Coulter and her comrades-in-arms, Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, Dick Morris, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, have discovered that they can empower Americans who don’t need facts or truth (judging by how they play fast and loose with them) by appealing to their innate biases and sense of angry impotence. In any other era, I doubt that Ms. Coulter’s angry rhetoric would result in the same level of national exposure. But Cloud isn’t interested in that, no doubt blinded by the Barbie doll looks that appear to be de rigueur for female conservative commentators.
America’s trust in mainstream media has been eroding steadily over the last couple of decades. This article–with its lazy editorial oversight–is but one more nail in the coffin of public trust. Times owes its readership an apology.
April 21st, 2005 at 1:23 pmhere’s the deal on the cover, which she is rasing hell about she claims the photographer used a fish eye lens to purposely distort her image i’ve been into photography and can recognize a wide angle lens easily which this clearly is i believe this shot was used to emphasize the length of her legs she is constantly descibed as the long legged blond right wing pitbull personally, i can’t stand her brand of fascism or her personally her comments about the time cover illustate her asthetic ignorance every time she opens her mouth the cover photo i can barely stomach the actual article made me really want to puke
April 21st, 2005 at 6:02 pmas hunter s. said in his last book, “big dark coming soon”
peace
AC is upset because her photo is distorted? I’m upset because her entire mindset is distorted. Get over yourself, Ann.
April 21st, 2005 at 6:35 pmCoulter’s only claim to fame is being a whore to the right wing. She will do or say anything to get publicity for right wing thinking and talking points. She has no credibilty whatsoever. Time disappoints me again. Thankfully, I cancelled my subscription when they named W the man of the year. There is no more putrid bunch of hypocritical fakes and phonies then the Republican party and all its supporters.
April 21st, 2005 at 7:04 pmWondering if Ann Man size foot Coulter had a sex change
April 21st, 2005 at 7:39 pmAs soon as I saw the cover I knew immediately that I would renew my Time subscription. I love Ann! It’s so great to see that all you liberals are so angry over this….
April 21st, 2005 at 8:21 pmIgnorance abounds among libersls–all of them!! Big Deal!!! SO, WHAT ELSE IS NEW?????
April 21st, 2005 at 8:34 pmRather than depend upon left or right wing commentators for our understanding of current events – we’d do better with research of our own. Ann’s writing is refreshing to me because she says what she means and does not vascilate to keep the person in front of her happy. However, I do put it down more entertained and inspired than necessarily informed.
April 21st, 2005 at 9:08 pmI do think the Time piece sounded more like the gushings of a boy with a grade school crush; far more ridiculous than the picture on the cover.
Regarding the previous post about how “liberals” are so angry over Ann Coulter and how “liberals” are so ignorant … frankly, I find Coulter’s racist, flippant, sexist comments extremely offensive, no matter what your political views. She is anything but conservative; she is seriously deluded – the very people she is preaching to will, in the end, find her redundant because she is a woman and therefore not worth listening to.
April 21st, 2005 at 9:35 pmBeing a conservative person I have never listened to Ann as much more than a political comedian. I was completely appalled at the racial comment though…the color of someone’s skin does not dictate what type of person they are. How does she justify saying people of color should be more thoroughly checked at airports? Belonging to one political party or the other does not make someone more intelligent, but making ignorant, shameful statements do make her an ass. Ann is an embarassment to not only herself, but to conservatives everywhere.
April 21st, 2005 at 11:51 pmAnne Coulter, while not polished and honed to a fine point represents the views of many of us. To say that she lies and distorts and mis-quotes is , in my opinion, un-true. She simply has a different interpretation and it is usually contrary to her enemies. I love the way she can take a statement and disect it and present it in the way the writer really feels as oppossed to what they write. The left is amazing at spin and manipulation and can make a statement that will hook a young person and bring them to their side. Anne , on the other hand, tells it like it is and lets the chips fall where they may and it usually isnt a pretty picture. We have a divided senate and congress that are more concerned with power rather than doing the peoples business. When the left lost the last election they have not stopped hating and pouting and disrupting and making a mess out of our country for selfish political gain and they do not care about the people or this country. People like Pelosi, Boxer, Kennedy and Kerry are the worst of the evil element at work in this country to destroy our constitution and everything we stand for. The only thing they are “for” is depravity and sickness and laws that take God out of our lives when at a time like this we need it more than ever. I am ashamed every time I see Hilary Clinton shreeking and yelling hatred and I am amazed that she or her peers have any supporters at all. I have been a democrate for 30 years and just recently the party left me way behind. I was a Kennedy democrate and loved the man but if he were alive today he would have nothing to do with this left wing socialist party pretending to be good americans.
April 22nd, 2005 at 3:20 pmTo Jim and the others that have defended Ann Coulter here, I’m going to be blunt. You people live in a parallel universe and your reality is a world of make believe. If you can still defend the right-wing and the Republicans you are one of four things:
badly brainwashed
really stupid
greedy
flat-out evil
If you aren’t even close enough to reality to realize that Ann Coulter is a disgraceful excuse for a human being than you probably fall under the brainwashed category and there is no hope.
You will soon see the error of your ways. I promise.
April 22nd, 2005 at 9:30 pmA few observations, and something to piss off absolutely everyone…
First, I’ve read some of Coulter’s columns and have seen her on various screeching head programs, and I don’t recall her ever making a single relevant or rational point about politics or current events.
Coulter gets rich by hurling big bloody chunks of red meat to a credulous mob that can’t be bothered to think for itself. Some prime examples of her fan base have posted here, and their mindless regurgitation of Coulter’s spew illustrates that point admirably.
That said, I think the heaps of bile directed at John Cloud are a tad misplaced or at least overblown. I agree that he glossed over Coulter’s shoddy research and blatant disregard for the truth — her egregious errors are well-documented and numerous.
What I wonder is why she bothers to attempt to dig up “facts” to support her “points” anyway. The people who lap up her screeds don’t seem to be interested in the footnotes. They just want confirmation that they’re the real ‘Merkuns and that those who disagree are pointy-headed, godless, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing sissies. Just like the deluded fools who avidly believe every word Michael Moore utters are just looking for confirmation that they are smart and compassionate human beings in sharp contrast to the knuckle-draggin, Bush-voting, NRA-supporting Neanderthals on the other side. But I digress…back to TIME.
As I said, I think some of the derision heaped on Cloud is misplaced; I don’t think the TIME piece was as hagiographic as some have made it out to be. Coulter still comes across as a screeching harpy because, well, she is. Cloud allows her to hang herself with her own words. A genuine puff piece would have edited out her more bigoted and silly diatribes.
And what of the charge that TIME legitimizes the screeching harpy? I’m not sure I buy that. The piece said that Coulter considers HERSELF a public intellectual. Cloud includes sufficient Coulter absurdities in the piece to disabuse any reader who understands the definition of the word “intellectual” of that notion.
Lastly, I also don’t buy the argument made by Eric Alterman and others that Coulter as TIME covergirl signals a cataclysmic decline in the tone of political discourse, the end of responsible journalism, a monumental sell-out by TIME to garner the Fox audience, etc.
I recently finished reading David McCollough’s excellent biography of John Adams, and it reinforced my belief that the “they’re-all-evil and we’re-all-good” rhetoric — complete with Bible-thumping hysteria and howls against creeping theocracy — have been with us in this country since at least the 2nd national election. I think we’ll survive the Coulter kerfluffle with our democracy intact.
April 23rd, 2005 at 11:10 amKillian, while I agree with most of your points I need to ask about your opinion regarding Michael Moore and the “deluded fools” who avidly believe every word he says. I’m not a huge fan of Moore and I think his public persona is goofy, but I don’t think you can dispute his facts, at least not from F911. If you looked into it (and I did), every anti-Bush, anti-Republican claim he makesin the movie is backed by legitimate sometimes multiple sources. Yes he’s creative in how he connects the dots (it was a movie after all) but I would like to hear specifically what claims he’s made that are flat out false. As for Coulter, nearly everything she says is flat out false. That’s the difference.
