ABCNews7 in Chicago interviewed Henry Hyde (R-IL):
Republican Congressman Henry Hyde made some surprising comments Thursday on the impeachment hearings of President Bill Clinton. He now says Republicans may have gone after Clinton to retaliate for the impeachment of Richard Nixon.
[snip]
Andy Shaw asked Hyde if the Clinton proceedings were payback for Nixon’s impeachment.
“I can’t say it wasn’t, but I also thought that the Republican party should stand for something, and if we walked away from this, no matter how difficult, we could be accused of shirking our duty, our responsibility,” said Hyde.

UPDATE 1:13PM: Full version - slightly revised - back up on site. ABC7 says they took the original version down while they added a footnote.

April 22nd, 2005 at 12:19 pmJust out of curiosity, am I the only who finds this explanation barely comprehensible?
Nixon was guilty of a serious crime–crimes, actually–and had to be pardoned by Ford accordingly.
Clinton misbehaved with an intern, and then attempted within the limits of the law–but not that of commonsense and decency–to deny his sexual misconduct.
(Again, the millions and millions of dollars spent on the Whitewater invesitgation found nothing because there was never anything to find).
In terms of abuse of power or harm to the executive office, what Nixon did and what Clinton aren’t even remotely equivalent.
So we were dragged through all that hateful nonsense, with Congressional gridlock and inaction on everything from terrorism to healthcare to the economy, so that certain Republicans could have their payback?
My God.
April 22nd, 2005 at 1:47 pmClinton lied about something he should never had been asked and republians tried to impeach him. Bush has lied from day one in office about the economy, forgien policy, social security, taxes, budget defecient and national debt and he gets reelected. I just can’t understand why
April 22nd, 2005 at 2:15 pmReagan should have been impeached for his incompetence/lies about the Iran-Contra scandal. But then again having consensual sex with an intern is a much more serious crime than FUNDING AN ILLEGAL WAR in Central America.
April 22nd, 2005 at 2:25 pmFirst - what’s a “URI” in the Leave a Comment section. I know what a URL is…
Save your outrage about the impeachment of Clinton. What’s truly outrageous - and I’m not the first to point this out - is that a reporter referred to the “impeachment” of Nixon. That a reporter can’t even remember very recent history is truly appalling. Did his opponents chase Nixon’s sorry ass out of office and out of town? Sure! Impeach him? Um, read your history books.
Reporter probably got his info from the Republicants’ daily talking points.
April 22nd, 2005 at 2:58 pmOliver North sold weapons to terrorists, our enemies who had sworn to destroy us. He gave anti-tank missiles to Hizbollah.
And now he’s called a patriot. A patriot for what country I would ask.
April 22nd, 2005 at 5:14 pmThese hate mongers hunted down the Clintons for 8 years and spent 10’s of millions of tax payers dollars and this is all they have to offer as an explaination?
Meanwhile during the process, there were plenty of pictures in circulation of Mr. Hyde’s mistress in the house meeting room waiting for Henry, I would guess.
Mr. Hyde your a hypocrit, may the republican party burn in hell.
April 22nd, 2005 at 5:37 pmClinton may have lied! but he sure as heck didn’t kill anyone.
July 17th, 2005 at 8:47 pmIf I didn’t know better, I would swear the man is trying to start a war in our own country.
