Ted Olson Joins Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy

Tom DeLay claims that all the criticism of his conduct is being orchestrated by a “left-wing syndicate.” The latest member to join the partisan chorus: Ted Olson. You’ll remember that, in 2000, Olson argued on behalf of George W. Bush before the Supreme Court. He also served as Bush’s Solicitor General until July 2004.

In Yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, Olson — in a piece entitled “Hands Off Our Judiciary” — criticized a “prominent member of the leadership of the House of Representatives…[who] has characterized another justice’s approach to adjudication as ‘incredibly outrageous.’” The person he was referring to was Tom DeLay, who made that comment the day before.

Here’s Olson’s response to DeLay’s comments:

It is time to take a deep breath, step back, and inject a little perspective into the recent heated rhetoric about judges and the courts. We might start by getting a firm grip on the reality that our independent judiciary is the most respected branch of our government, and the envy of the world.

Olson also strongly criticized DeLay’s suggestion to investigate the judges who ruled in the Terri Schiavo case:

Calls to investigate judges who have made unpopular decisions are particularly misguided, and if actually pursued, would undermine the independence that is vital to the integrity of judicial systems. If a judge’s decisions are corrupt or tainted, there are lawful recourses (prosecution or impeachment); but congressional interrogations of life-tenured judges, presumably under oath, as to why a particular decision was rendered, would constitute interference with — and intimidation of — the judicial process. And there is no logical stopping point once this power is exercised.

When are left-wing partisans like Ted Olson going to put an end to their witch hunt against Tom DeLay?

Damn, it’s getting deep for ‘ol Tom. But, we all know what a left wing wacko Ted Olsen is.

  2. BDG says:

Today Charles Krauthammer joined the vast-left wing chorus against Delay as well. His article begins, “Provocation is no excuse for derangement.” He goes on to criticize the “flailing, sometimes delirious attacks on the judiciary” by Delay and his cronies.

Deranged and delirious? Coming from Krauthammer, those words must really sting the bug man.

Not bad for a guy who lied under oath to congress. (That was about the Arkansas project.)

Very interesting to see some better-educated conservatives waking up to see what looneys they woke up with in a cheap motel bed.

  4. Bob says:

yeah, there’s a syndicate all right… reasonable people who use their brains and find extremist bullshit in public discourse unacceptable are hooking up all over the place…

If that’s the same column I read in yesterdays WSJ I was heartened by the article until the last paragraph. That is where he came back & said to get the “partisainship” out of the judicial selections and basically supported sending everyone to the floor of the Senate for a Majority vote.

So yea, he said SOME good things but basically called for an end to the filibuster as well. Now, I could be wrong. Anyone with a copy, help me out please.

  6. Skeemi says:

    Here’s the quote:

“No discussion of the judiciary should close without reference to the shambles that the Senate confirmation process has become. It does no good to speculate about how or when the disintegration began, which political interest has been the most culpable, or the point at which the appointment of judges became completely dysfunctional. That sort of debate is both endless and futile. The only hope for an end to the downward spiral is for the combatants to lay down their arms; stop using judicial appointments to excite special-interest constituencies and political fund-raising; move forward with votes on qualified, responsible and respected nominees so that those who have the support of a majority of the Senate can be confirmed, as contemplated by the Constitution; and remove the rancor and gamesmanship from the judicial selection process.”

It seems he’s targeting more than partisanship. He’s asking for qualified nominees who will exercise the same sort of responsibility American judges are known for.

The people that get me aren’t guys like Olson, who want some particular nominee/s, but the ones who would love to “investigate” decisions.

Talk about overstepping Constitutional bounds. Lest we forget, checks and balances refers to the three branches of government, not to the two (dysfunctional) parties.

Tom Delay is an outstanding and exemplary example of the GOP and its ethical standards.

  9. Helena Montana says:

The best word to describe Tom DeLay, I believe, is ‘demagogue.’ But not a terribly good one.

  10. raginblue6 says:

Wonder if Ted has figured out who was behind the death od his wife; all of them?

  11. cal says:

It just seems that fooling around with the independence of the judiciary is so unAmerican.

Doesn’t anyone remember the Massachusetts Administration of Justice Act?

By the way does anyone know how to contact that ‘left-wing syndicate’, I’d like to make a contribution.

  12. Rama Schneider says:

People like Olsen literally asked for all this … hell they VOTED for it! **sigh** Oh well, better late than never.

  13. not-a-ted-fan says:

Few people have done more to bring us this crap than Ted Olsen. He deserves the crap we’re all getting. Sadly, those of us who opposed his efforts are stuck with the crap he helped put in power. Ted, take your buyer’s remorse and bite my a&&.

  14. David says:

This kind of “campaignâ€? against the judiciary is not new. It has not succeeded before, but what is alarming this time is the profound success that has been achieved in labeling those who advocate religious and moral tolerance as being bereft of American values. It is a solid historical fact – tolerance, compromise and individual liberty are the very reason for the existence of the United States. Without these, alive and well at the core of our political system, the USA is just another place. Delay will fade into the dim annals of congressional roughnecks, sooner or later. What I fear is that we are loosing the capacity to replace him with someone with true personal integrity, a historical understanding of what is means to be an American, and the awareness that it is our differences, working together, that make us strong.

  15. Kevin Knox says:

Ted Olsen was part of the vast right-wing conspiracy that pummeled Pres. Clinton and now that his goofy wife is dead maybe he’s figured it was time to utilize come integrity. But, let’s not start sucking each other’s dicks just yet. This guy is a partisan, and a whore. Beware!

  16. Bubba Ram Dos says:

I’m tellin’ ya, them Commonists is everywhere. Why do they Murka so much?

  17. Paul in LA says:

Ted Olson is also, IINM, the source of the ‘box cutters’ myth. He was told about those during his two conversations with his doomed wife, on the Pentagon plane which the gov’t says EVAPORATED into the Pentagon, who somehow called him without a cellphone or a credit card.

She also wanted to know what to tell the pilots. Or he said she did. How was it she was the only person on that flight to call when the terrorists told all 50 or so to? How is it that an airliner could evaporate in a smokey fire? How come only FEMA was allowed to investigate (and the NTSB wasn’t allowed to investigate ANY of those crashes)?

Must be that physics and chemistry have changed since Bush, too.

  18. Bozo says:

Speaking of Iran, Olson counseled Reagan for the Iran-Contra affair.

Olson, being on the short list [http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/01/AR2005070100756.html] for the NEXT Supreme Court nomination (i.e. when Rehnquist goes), is just telling the Reps to go easy on nominees with checkered backgrounds, i.e. HIM.

I hate “conspiracy theories” but with Olson’s “I’d do anything for a Supreme Court job” attitude and giant Republican campaign donations
    [http://newsmeat.com/washington_political_donations/Ted_Olson.php]
he’s feeding the “bogus wife on the 9/11 disappearing plane into the Pentagon” wackos stuff they couldn’t come up with on their own.

Now, what game is afoot as Ted Olson is the lawyer representing Matt Cooper, seemingly a foe of the current administration, after a lifetime of Republican service? Retaliation for being snubbed for the Supreme Court? Or just baking the legal process beyond all recognition? Stay tuned.

  19. Sarah says:

The whole story about Barbara’s phone calls to Ted on 911 is unbelievable to say the least. Does it strike anyone as odd that Ted Olson birthday is 911?
Try to picture a man with a box knife as a threat. It’s so stupid it makes me laugh. Why would anyone see a box knofe as life threatening? I sure as hell wouldn’t let them take over a plane because they had one. I might give them a box to open but that’s about it.
