In case you had any questions about why the House leadership is considering restoring the rules of the Ethics Committee, Dennis Hastert cleared it up at a press conference this morning:
I think that there’s a member, especially on our side, that needs to have the process move forward so he can clear his name. Right now we can’t clear his name.
The media wants to talk about ethics, and as long as we’re at a stalemate, that’s all that is in the press today, is the ethics stalemate.
We need to move forward, we need to get this behind us.
And you thought the Ethics Committee was about uncovering the facts and making sure members obeyed the rules. Not in this Congress.
I think this is a very good angle to attack the Repubs. It’s simple and easily understood: The Republicans in Congress don’t have ethics. They think they deserve to break all the rules, because they believe they’re better than the rest of Americans!
Keep pounding them.
April 27th, 2005 at 12:40 pmThe Republicans in the House, since the days of Gingrich, have been about partisanship and nothing else. Lately, the Republicans in the Senate have been sliding down the slippery slope to join their fellow Congressmen in that stinking morass.
April 27th, 2005 at 1:15 pmEvery time I think the Republicans just can’t go any lower, they come forward with something like this. I keep wondering when that half of the country that seems to support this administration is going to wake up and start calling their representatives to task. Surely not everyone in the party believes this is the way to govern.
April 27th, 2005 at 1:20 pmIt’s time to focus on the Republicans in Congress. It’s time for C-SPAN to change their Support Bush Line to Republicans or GOP so the Republicans can be seen separately from Bush. The Republican Party has been hiding behind Bush for too long. People need to see them for what they are.
April 27th, 2005 at 1:26 pm“I think that there’s a member, especially on our side”.
April 27th, 2005 at 2:06 pmDid he mean “some members” or is “the member” especially …
The Bushies control of the media won’t allow that other half to wake up. No matter how many flags you raise, they will counter by hijacking the conversation. We need they media to be called to task.
April 27th, 2005 at 2:51 pmThe best thing for Pelosi and the Democrats to do is wonder aloud why, if Delay wants to clear his name — he doesn’t simply hold a televised press conference and answer all questions. He doesn’t need the Ethics Committee to clear his name, he needs to do it himself. And good luck to him doing that!
April 27th, 2005 at 3:13 pmAlan, they CAN and DID get lower today. They rewrote descriptions of Democratic amendments to a House bill to make it look like Democrats don’t care if sexual predators can evade prosecution. See this to get the scoop on this later bit of GOP outrageousness:
April 27th, 2005 at 3:39 pmFollow up, see this link:

April 27th, 2005 at 3:40 pmNothing the GOP (the Gross Outdated Party) does shocks me. However,I would watch for a “Trojan Horse” manuever from the GOP on the ethics thing. I think that Hastert(R-Lackey of Delay) is trying to snare the Dems into a trap in which it is the Dems who are attacked for “lack of ethics” from the radical right and their syncophants(Lyin’Limbaugh,Half-wit Hannity, etc) It will be made to look like the Dems are the ones with an ethics problem, while Delay gets off scot free.
April 27th, 2005 at 4:03 pmi think half of america is doing meth’ what else could it be?
April 27th, 2005 at 6:11 pmLeave Tom Delay alone! I want him to be either the republican nominee in 08 or even better, how about Condi’s running mate?
April 27th, 2005 at 6:52 pmthe president just learned that his approval rating is down,am glad to know he is going to do something about it..
April 27th, 2005 at 7:35 pmgoathead got it right ..
The best scenario is to let Delay twist, slowly – it’s better to have this sore fester for as long as possible – and the closer to 2006 elections, the better.
April 27th, 2005 at 8:03 pmCan the GOP go much LOWER???? DeLay is a CORRUPT politician who needs to be hammered out of the Congress…But along comes Mr. Hasert trying to paint DeLay as just an ordinary citizen politician who is being crucified by the media…Give me a break!!! Ethics??? The GOP does not know ethics from squat…DeLay needs to be sent back to Texas!! Bring on the 2006 mid-term elections….!!!!
April 27th, 2005 at 8:06 pmEthics … we done need no stink’n ethics!
Currently the Repubs are attacking the filibuster, (also unpopular by a 2 to 1 margin). Then we have their favorite phony reporter/name, gay prositute, Jim Guckert, aka. Jeff Gannon roaming the White House at will – (kinda “blows” the “family values” thing “up the butt”). Next the Valarie Plame case. Can anyone tell us what’s up with that? And bush is meeting with the Saudi’s – isn’t that nice, holding hands and all. I don’t expect he’ll be reminding them that it was THEIR nationals that attacked us on 9/11 now will we? Do I even need to mention all the things deteriating as we speak, Iraq, health, economy, schools and environment?
Do you think they care? Hell NO! They’ve already stolen two elections. Which reminds me, the complete farse Election Reform Committee is also on the top of the list of current shams. Tom Delay – he’s a sideshow.
April 27th, 2005 at 8:21 pmI think its good for the progressives if DeLay hangs arouns until ‘06, at least.
If he’s cashiered from the House now, he’ll just go to a cushy K Street Lobby gig, with more cash, less oversight and keep on doing what he’s doing now.
April 28th, 2005 at 9:41 amGosh, DeLay didn’t know his boondoggle was paid for with a lobbyist’s credit card. Remember the Republican motto: It’s not a lie of you really believe it at the time.
April 28th, 2005 at 11:35 amLooks like a “done deal” Republicans will clear DeLay….evidence, intent and wrongdoing will not be examined..he will be cleared…
April 28th, 2005 at 10:38 pmNot to sound overly paranoid. But a well placed terrorist attack in the next few days/weeks/months? would really help the Republicans shore up their political defences for the upcoming elections? All these nasty, annoying little problems would become a thing of the past and they could once again ride the waves of fear, ignorance, and hatred into positions of power in the senate. We’ve seen it twice already. We all know just how low they are prepared to stoop.
April 28th, 2005 at 10:44 pmwhat everyone is missing is pelosi’s comment that they are reversing the rules but not rehiring the democratic members of the ethics committee that they fired during their purge. until this is done, there will never be a fair ethics panel.
