Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has defended the claim that opponents of President Bush’s judicial nominees are “against people of faith.” Tonight President Bush was asked if he agreed, and his answer was clear:
BUSH: … I just don’t agree with it.
QUESTION: You don’t agree with it?
BUSH: No. I think people oppose my nominees because of judicial philosophy.
QUESTION: Sir, I asked you about what you think of…
BUSH: No, I know what you asked me.
QUESTION: … the way faith is being used in our political debates, not just in society generally.
BUSH: Well, I can only speak to myself. And I am mindful that people in political office should not say to somebody, You’re not equally American if you don’t happen to agree with my view of religion.
I saw this too…thought he was actually going to ‘loose’ his focus too…
And what in the hell was he saying?! – he went on there to say that his faith guides him, so assumably his faith guided him in his decision on his judicial nominees…but the approval of his nominees should NOT take into consideration the faith-based guidance that Bush used in deciding who to nominate? WTF?!
April 28th, 2005 at 9:18 pmListening to Bush’s comments tonight, it finally dawned on me who he really is. HE IS DOGBERRY, from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing! Ah, if only the bard were still here. But how does one parody a parody?
April 28th, 2005 at 9:27 pmWhat about THIS statment he made:
Sherman: What will you do to win the votes of the Americans who are atheists?
Bush: I guess I’m pretty weak in the atheist community. Faith in God is important to me.
Sherman: Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists?
Bush: No, I don’t know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.

April 28th, 2005 at 9:31 pmWhat you just quoted was something Bush’s FATHER said.
April 28th, 2005 at 10:15 pmBush Jr. did have a similar comment in a Washington Post interview, though I can’t seem to find it now.
April 28th, 2005 at 10:23 pmGot oil?
I do.

April 28th, 2005 at 10:46 pmI believe he was saying “I don’t agree” with the tenet of the question, which was that people were injecting faith into the debate over the nominees. I don’t think he was at all rejecting what Bill Frist did. He was dodging the question. He then offered a namby-pamby “freedom of religion is why this country is great” platitude which made it seem like he was rebuking Frist’s actions. He was really just spouting avoiding the real question.
April 28th, 2005 at 11:54 pmI think he kept wanting to say “All you faggot reporters have no idea what it is like to actually try to solve a problem.” I hate it when presidents try to do stuff. I miss Clinton.
April 29th, 2005 at 1:26 amYeah, it was brought to my attention that the quote I posted was actually from Bush I. My bad!
April 29th, 2005 at 1:27 amHow can I get through to The Center to get someone from the blog to see if they can come on my show for an interview??

April 29th, 2005 at 2:41 amThis represents a bold departure from the standard Republican “you are equally American, unless you are gay or a Democrat or not a billionaire” policy. As for the “I only speak for myself” bit, thats new too. I thought Presidents were kinda speaking for the whole country (or, well, should be), though our views get misrepresented quite often. And sorry there Chimpy, but your nominees are not being turned down because of their religious views, they are being turned down because you have a way of finding the most incompetent candidates possible for a given position. They aren’t bad because they are religious, they are bad because they are stupid. If the only people you ever submit are religious, then guess what, some religious candidates will be turned down. If you only submitted small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri, then some small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri would most likely get turned down as well, but that does not make a case for claiming its discrimination. It just means they are not qualified for that job, like that gibbering idiot that likes to remind us what he does is hard, hard work. I guess when you are on vacation more than you show up for work, it probably would be tough to actually get things accomplished, so we can let that statement slide.
April 29th, 2005 at 8:00 amI detest the shrub, BUT he does get .05 of a point, for “BUSH: … I just don’t agree with it.
QUESTION: You don’t agree with it?
BUSH: No. I think people oppose my nominees because of judicial philosophy.”
It’s right there..and that statement is true, right?
Their competence as judges, and history of decisions suck. We’re not rooting for satan, or anything, are we? He summed up what we’ve been saying all along.
April 29th, 2005 at 9:18 amYea, bush43 did say that last night. I would have liked for him to say that he didn’t support Frists efforts to eliminate the filibuster. He didn’t though. I think that is a more important aspect. He wants to have it both ways.
April 29th, 2005 at 10:39 amI have nothing to add on this point, but I just wanted to say that these posts rocked! It was great to have the rapid response. Thanks for all your work!
April 29th, 2005 at 10:48 amI have been trying to think of a way that the blog community could lend support to the Princeton students who are filibustering to protest the destruction of the filibuster in the Senate…
They’ve been at it for a couple days now, and I they are starting to get some media attention… anybody got ideas for how the blogosphere can help them?
April 29th, 2005 at 11:11 amVictoria, go to Talkingpointsmemo.com by Josh Marshall. He’s been covering it really well all week.
April 29th, 2005 at 11:32 amKindness –
I’ve seen the JM website, and essentially he’s asking the same question I am: What can we do to help?
People are aware of it, but don’t know how to help… Maybe some ideas will be forthcoming.
April 29th, 2005 at 11:35 amPresident Bush and the ventriloquists behind him, need a serious course in world religions as well as a rigorously academic study of the New Testament. Christianity is presented in the New Testament as an essentially INCLUSIVE faith. The evangelical right Christians do not speak for the millions of Christians who work at walking the walk – doing the work required of Christians. How long will we “other Christians” allow the radical right (of bumer sticker faith) to speak for all Christians?
April 29th, 2005 at 12:14 pmWhat most people are missing here is the reason why the republicans are so interested in helping W get his judicial nominations passed — that W would get 100% of his nominees confirmed. That would be something no other president has been able to do. But with a congress loaded with his republicans — he is having a difficult time getting everything he wants. Then again, W is a “spoiled brat.” He has really had to job where he had to work hard for his rewards, mommy and daddy and daddy’s friends always bailed him out.
But again, the republicans and Rove want to say that W should go down in history for getting the 100% judicial nominees confirmed, if they are.
April 29th, 2005 at 12:27 pmThey need to be stopped from achieving that goal and Reid is doing a great job of putting in the blocks in the road of the goal.
Here’s a point to hit on….
April 29th, 2005 at 12:36 pmRepublicans “obstructed” nearly 60 of Clinton’s nominnes by not letting them out of commitee. Democrats have “obstructed” 10 of Bush’s nominees through the threat of a filibuster.
Here’s the main difference: Republicans have a way to push back…they can break the filibuster with 60 votes.
The Democrats HAD NO WAY to push back during Clinton’s term…because if the party controlling the Judiciary committe denies a nominee the chance to get to the floor..there is no recourse.
So what the dems are doing now is ACTUALLY MORE FAIR than what repubs did then!
which brings up the point that repubs are not interested in “fair”. that’s been handled by their “faith in god and jesus christ”. now winning is their only goal.
April 29th, 2005 at 2:57 pmCome on, all his supporters know he was just appeasing the heathens. What he really wanted to say is, “You’re going to hell, but until then I am your President.”
April 29th, 2005 at 6:46 pmEverything that Bush utters has been heavily scripted, and I think they wanted to give the temporary illusion that they were not behaving like nazi’s in the making. With that illusion done, they will resume actions which are the building blocks of a dictatorship.
This brings to mind the expression, “never believe anything until it has been officialy denied.” Especially by Bush…
April 29th, 2005 at 6:57 pmSomeone asked how they can help defend the filibuster…
April 29th, 2005 at 9:33 pmMoveon.org is well organized.
We rallied in several cities across America this past Tuesday..
Join Moveon.org and you will be alerted via e-mail of such events..
In addition Moveon.org asks it’s members to sign petitions and write letters to editors of newspapers..
They are respected as THE major grass roots organization and the Republicans wish they would go away..
Another way to express your discontent is by signing Ramsey Clarks (former attorney general) petition to impeach George W. Bush @votetoimpeach.org
April 29th, 2005 at 9:35 pmWatch for “fair” to be a new framing word. You can bet Luntz had that focus-group rested.
“BUSH: … I just don’t agree with it.” [Left unsaid: but don't expect me to do anything to prove that I don't agree with it. And because I'm a born again bible thumper, the fools of the far reich will know in their hearts I am backing Frist's fabulous fillibuster follies and not just pimping for my big corporations backers.]
“…And I am mindful that people in political office should not say to somebody, You’re not equally American if you don’t happen to agree with my view of religion.” [Left unsaid: "Because even though I believe it, to say it, would get me in trouble with the liberal media."]
May 1st, 2005 at 2:16 amYou know, Bush wasn’t quite that nice when he said that Wicca shouldn’t be recognized as a religion, back in the day while trying to defend Strom Thurmond…
