Opponents of President Bush’s most radical judicial nominees are clearly not “against people of faith” — the Senate has confirmed a host of President Bush’s judges who are also active in their religious communities (ThinkProgress compiled a list of them here.)
But there is someone who seems to oppose judges who are people of faith (or at least people of certain faiths). And it’s Pat Robertson.
Today on ABC’s This Week, Robertson was confronted with a passage from his book “The New World Order” where he writes, “How dare you maintain that those who believe in Judeo-Christian values are better qualified to govern America than Hindus and Muslims? My simple answer is, ‘Yes, they are.”‘
STEPHANOPOLOUS: Does that mean Hindu and Muslim judges?
ROBERTSON: Right now, I think people who feel that they should be in jihad against America (inaudible) the Islamic people saying they divide the world into two spheres: Dar al-Islam and Daral-Harb. The Dar al-Islam are those submitted to Islam. Dar al-Harb are those who are at the land of war. And they have said in the Qu’ran there’s a war against all the infidels. Do you want somebody like that sitting as a judge? I wouldn’t.
STEPHANOPOULOS: So I take it then, the answer to the question is that you believe only Christians and Jews are qualified to serve in the federal judiciary?
ROBERTSON: I’m not sure I’d make such a broad sweeping statement. But I just feel that those who share the philosophy of the founders of this nation, who assent to the principles of the Declaration of Independence, who assent to the principles that underlie the Constitution: Such people are the ones that should be judges.
Not sure, Mr. Robertson? The correct answer is, “No.”
“the Islamic people . . . divide the world into two spheres”

Hmmmmm. Let’s see. That would be as opposed to GDumbya who divides the world into two spheres — “you’re either with us or against us”.
On the other hand, John McCain should take heart from Robertson’s drivel this morning. He said he wouldn’t support McCain under any circumstances. That’s good enough for me!
May 1st, 2005 at 3:11 pmYet another Hitler wannabe. I wonder if his New World Order secretly inlcludes the elimination of liberals. Nah, that’s in his Final Solution… My don’t they hate and fear liberals in direct parallel with the Nazis’ hatred of the Jews! Robertson is no doubt reading Mein Kampf on the sly; he needs to learn the ropes.
The choice and freedom fearers are salivating to remove these from all of us, as it creates a nagging anxiety for them when 100% isn’t under their control.
May 1st, 2005 at 3:20 pmWe need to somehow nip all of this in the bud.
This is the a guy who is a movement who called democrats “against people of faith” saying that he’s against musliums and hindus serving as judges……what hypocracy these people are truly brainwashed.
May 1st, 2005 at 4:32 pmPat Robertson started a law school a while back (Regent). Every now and then one of their professors submits an article to my law review, and we all have a good chuckle about what passes for legal scholarship when you can cite the Bible as binding precedent.
May 1st, 2005 at 5:37 pmThis is why Pat Robertson is a founding member of The American Taliban.
By the way, here’s a little history on how people of Robertson’s ilk used to view the judiciary.
May 1st, 2005 at 6:40 pmI’m surprised to not see Rove on the American Taliban list. As usual and by design, he flies under the radar. He doesn’t wear his religion on his sleeve but you know every one of those guys has him on speed-dial.

You shouldn’t laugh too soon. If the Christian Taliban reaches their goal of 100% control of our nation, you may find yourself burning your law books and ONLY using the Bible as binding precedent.
In addition, practicing law under the American Christian Taliban may involve such cases as whether we should burn the witch on Saturday or Sunday? Sunday is a day of rest, but burning liberals would probably be very relaxing for people like Pat Robertson, so maybe Sunday…. What do you think? This is probably a good practice question to get you into the New World Order mindset.

May 1st, 2005 at 7:44 pmOh Robertson, what won’t you say? Oh yes, christians are such peaceful people, so opposed to war, unlike Muslims..
May 1st, 2005 at 8:18 pmRobertson said, “But I just feel that those who share the philosophy of the founders of this nation, who assent to the principles of the Declaration of Independence, who assent to the principles that underlie the Constitution: Such people are the ones that should be judges.”
He might want to read up on The founding father, Thomas Jefferson:
Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.
-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782
But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg. -Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782
They [the clergy] believe that any portion of power confided to me, will be exerted in opposition to their schemes. And they believe rightly; for I have sworn upon the altar of god, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. But this is all they have to fear from me: and enough, too, in their opinion. -Thomas Jefferson to Dr. Benjamin Rush, Sept. 23, 1800
Robertson has been referred to as a member of the the American Taliban; compare Robertson and his like minded follower to radical Islamic clerics and the mixing of religion and politics. There’s not much difference.
“The Qom school believes the opposite, with Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, officially considered as the highest religious authority of the world’s Shias. Qom sees the direct involvement of clerics in state ruling and executive affairs as their legitimate right and moral obligation.”
Progressives are clearly in the minority, we’re fighting the world’s extremists from both sides that are trying their best to suck every last drop of goodness out of religion.
May 1st, 2005 at 10:32 pmProgressives may be a 49% minority in this country, but we are a majority in the world.
Most of the world wants to move forward. We can do it in spite of those who don’t.
May 2nd, 2005 at 1:08 amDon’t yoy think that part of the problem in America now is that fringe people, who are or approximate lunatics, are treated as worthy of being interviewed on national television? Mr. Robertson’s many claims of doubtful sanity include that schizophrenia can be caused by demon possession,” and that he hasg “cast out demons…at least on two occasions.”
As for his current love of all things Christian, it was not always so, as shown by this gem, said on the 700 Club, on January 14, 1991:
“You say you’re supposed to be nice to the Episcopalians and the Presbyterians and the Methodists and this, that, and the other thing. Nonsense. I don’t have to be nice to the spirit of the Antichrist.”
As long as Robertson, Coulter, Limbaugh and their ilk are treated as worthy of discussion, we are in big trouble. We have stepped into a very bad time machine and returned to the 1930s, when Father Coughlin and his imitators danced us to the edge of fascism.
May 2nd, 2005 at 9:55 amIf you read Robertson’s final statement in response to Stephenopois:
“you believe only Christians and Jews are qualified to serve in the federal judiciary?”
ROBERTSON: “I’m not sure I’d make such a broad sweeping statement.”
It sounds like the twerp is also implicitly excluding Jews from serving as judges too.
May 2nd, 2005 at 4:36 pm#13 – “It sounds like the twerp is also implicitly excluding Jews from serving as judges too.” My immediate thought as well.
May 2nd, 2005 at 6:31 pmWhere is the press on this stuff? Back in the 60’s and 70’s they’d be all over these kind of irresponsible statements. I guess everyone is in fear of King George and the evil empire.
This crap isn’t going to disappear until liberals/progressives start challenging these social deviants in the paper, radio, net, TV. Take the fight to them wherever they want it. Expose all the lies and send the conservative cowards back to their collective closets.
Fourty years ago some of us believed that the government, Vietnam, and black segregation was all wrong. We weren’t going to accept that life. We burned stuff, we went to jails, we took over campus buildings, some actually died for their ideals.
Is this all we are now a bunch of tired fat butts too complacent to get involved, forgetting that at one time we were proad to be liberals and think differently than the “man” and express and organize for our believes.
We changed a world at one time, let’s get this country back on track.
May 2nd, 2005 at 8:52 pmIn response to #15, about where is the Press…and I do remember the 60’s, they are now bought and paid for by large corporations or owners who contribute heavily to Republicans.
May 3rd, 2005 at 1:06 amSome of your senior newsmen were out in the jungles, on the front lines, in Viet Nam. They would of never settled to bury so much, but they’re older now, and the new generation is looking out for themselves. Middle American got too complacent since the 60’s. Many of the strides we made then, are now being over-turned, over-ruled, dismissed, ridiculed, or changed. ‘Us against the Establishment, ‘never trust anyone over 30′. Our worst nighmares have come true, we didn’t set the world on fire, only our dreams.
