Over the weekend the New York Times reported on evidence that the United States has regularly sent terror suspects to Uzbekistan, an “authoritarian state” known for beating and asphyxiating prisoners, boiling body parts, using electroshock on genitals and “plucking off fingernails and toenails with pliers.” The State Department’s 2005 report on Uzbekistan states bluntly: “The police force and the intelligence service use torture as a routine investigation technique.” But Uzbekistan’s role as a “surrogate jailer” for the United States has been “confirmed by a half-dozen current and former intelligence officials working in Europe, the Middle East and the United States.” The Uzbekistan renditions are the latest in a spate of troublesome allegations about U.S. treatment of detainees, just days after the one-year anniversary of Abu Ghraib.
Worse, the abuse isn’t limited to foreign regimes. Sgt. Erik Saar, a soldier who spent three months in the interrogation rooms at Guantanamo Bay, told CBS’ 60 Minutes this week that the approach of U.S. military interrogators is “ineffective” and “inconsistent with American values.” According to Saar and a series of FBI e-mails obtained by CBS, abusive methods and sexual humiliation are used routinely in Gitmo. Saar describes a female interrogator smearing fake menstrual blood on the face of a Saudi detainee, then depriving him of water so he could not ritually clean himself and pray that night. The FBI e-mails confirm Saar’s accounts.
Well, that’s it. I’m canceling my vacation to Uzbekistan!
May 2nd, 2005 at 10:51 amFor this, President Bush should be impeached, removed from office, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It is his sworn duty to preserve, protect, and defend the U.S. Constitution, and that means the laws and treaties passed by Congress — ALL OF THEM.

Preserve the Integrity and Humanity of The United States of America!
So at what point does our Congress get serious about investigating this administrative for their disgraceful participation in these despicable actions. And I’m not talking about parading some low level privates out to take the blame for this activity. Who (besides the watchers of FOX News….an oxymoron if ever there was one) is buying that higher levels of the Military, Pentagon, and Administration could not have been complicit in this disgraceful behavior? No wonder these prisoners have to be held indefinately without counsel……America can’t risk the full extent of their testimony being revealed to the World or to the American people.
May 2nd, 2005 at 12:30 pmSo Ashcroft was only hiding the statue of Justice behind that blue curtain?
May 2nd, 2005 at 12:42 pmAs the nation with more prisoners per capita than any other in the world, incarcerating people at a rate five times greater than China even, we must know something about how to treat prisoners in the worst possible ways to elicit confessions, information, and cooperation. Thus, when it is determined that something other than the usual(and the record for US prisons is horrendous and hideous) is needed, we of course know where to turn. The “stan” countries must indeed be short on cash and long on human intel extraction.
May 2nd, 2005 at 2:05 pmIs this the best these basterds can do to screw up this country.
May 2nd, 2005 at 2:22 pmIt is no wonder that the administration does not ascribe to the international court: Bush, Cheney, Rove and Rumsfeld, among others, would have to answer indictments. I need someone to explain to me why they shouldn’t have to answer to the court, as well as be impeached, here.

May 2nd, 2005 at 3:16 pmDid ANYone watch the 60 min episode last night? 5-1-05? it delt specifically with torture
May 2nd, 2005 at 3:25 pmYes, I DID watch 60 min, and a word of kudos to print media like nytimes and washpost for keeping these serious issues in the spotlight. Cable news will never pick it up..
May 2nd, 2005 at 3:38 pmThere must be some way that U. S. citizens can tell the administration know that we do not accept that justice is being done because that PFC is doing eleven years in prison and that none of the investigations have convinced us that someone at the top should not be held responsible. We should demand the full accountability that has been promised by Rumsfeld, Powell, and Bush.
May 2nd, 2005 at 6:10 pmI hang my head in shame…
May 2nd, 2005 at 6:36 pmWe have the most devious, despicable, lying, secretive corruptive government in G. W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Rumsfield, The CIA and the officer corp of the services! Bush is winning the war in Iraq with the last GI standing! as I told you before the war equipment will be worn out by the desert sand, no paper, as shown on CBS, with thousands of tanks, humvees, etc and will take 2 yrs and 1 billion dollars to repair them. The lung diseases will follow
May 2nd, 2005 at 6:59 pmI don’t recognize us any more. Why are we acting so dishonorably these days. Did GWB do this all by himself? The man is a selfish jackass, a lying fool, and a steal-from-the-children thief, but why are so many standing behind him, propping him up rather than letting him fall on his smart-aleck face? The damage done to the U.S internationally will never recover–at least not in my lifetime. Where is the press? Where is the outrage? Where are the backbones?
May 2nd, 2005 at 7:16 pmWhat the hell is it going to take to put these roaches in jail where they belong? How many scandals and revelations? Maybe if we take to the streets as we did in the 70’s when the Nixon regime was toppled something good’ll come of it. I’m not optomistic.
May 2nd, 2005 at 8:55 pmThis is truly the most shameful, hypocritical, Unchristian, UnAmerican administration in the history of the republic. Bush makes the administration of Warren Harding look like goody two shoes. Americans should write their representatives in Congress and DEMAND that those responsible all the way up the chain of command be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law…if there is anything left of American Jurisprudence after Bush gets through packing the Supreme Court with his right wing, agenda driven, genuflecting loyalists.

Why should we not be surprised to find that a near totalitarian government (America’s controlling Republican executive, legislative and judicial branches), disguising itself in any number of slick ways to try and convince the world at large that we are so many things which we are not (anymore).
Rendering terrorist suspects to countries like Uzbekistan, Syria and Egypt, for major league torture is but one symptom, among many, of the disease(s) afflicting the U.S. government today? And, isn’t it going to stay that way for as long as some one-half of the electorate being aversely affected continues to bend over and say “thank you”?
“1984″, Poor is Rich, Rich is Poor, Good is Bad, Bad is Good, Fowl Air is Healthy Air, Poisoned Water is Good for us, Less Ancient Trees makes Healthier Forests, Alternative sources of Energy is Unhealthy, Changing the Constitution and Rules of Law is Good for the Nation, Reverting to a time before 1895 (Robber Barons, no Child Labor Laws, no Unions), Ignoring the Geneva Convention for Treatment of Prisoners is moral, etc., etc., etc.
Are we sufficiently challenging the corrupt and illegal elections of 2000 and 2004? Are we challenging how the administration and the military hierarchy are twisting the truth, hiding the truth, and flaunting their power, and thumbing their noses at the international community. Until we do, we apparently deserve what we have – where we are – how we accept our fate. Until we are at equal strength with those corrupt supporters of the Republican Party, we are going remain pawns to the likes of Bush, Rove, DeLay, Frist, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and so many others.
I have vented! Thank you
May 2nd, 2005 at 10:31 pmI think Bill Bean is right on target. There is going to be nothing done to stop these apes outside of many of us taking to the streets. The numbers will have to be huge as it seems our main stream media is so scared of this administration they will not cover any protest – I would like to see a protest 24/7 like we have Michael Jackson, and the run-away bride – who gives a damn about these stories – but they make a good hiding place for the media

September 26th, 2005 at 1:01 amWhy is it surprising that this administration uses Uzbekistan as a rendition partner? Nothing immoral, illegal, mendacious or predatory should be put past them. They’ve already shown themselves numerous times over to have NO concept of what the founding principles of this country are, its traditions, ethos, or moral fiber. They constitute the most amoral band of jackals to ever run this country, and we all know why there haven’t been articles of impeachment drwn for W and Cheney, and articles of indictment drawn up for all of those other hyenas: the inbred nature of the three branches of the Federal government, with Republican and neocon hacks in every vital post throughout the executive, judiciary and legislative branches. Electing a Democrat majority into Congress next year is critical if these bottom feeders are ever to be brought to justice. How much worse than W is Slobodan Milosevic? Yet, Slobo sits in jail, while W rules the world. Then, we wonder why they hate us?
