Lotts of Confusion Over “Price Indexing”

Sen. Trent Lott spent the day travelling with President Bush in Mississippi, but that didn’t stop him from taking a few shots at the president’s new decidedly unprogressive “progressive indexing” plan:

“I’m not overjoyed about that,” Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., told reporters before Bush left the state. Lott said he thought such an indexing plan could lead the nation “toward a welfare system.” But Lott predicted that Congress would approve a Social Security overhaul plan sometime this year. “I’m prepared to cast a tough vote,” he said.

Lott isn’t the only one — Sen. George Allen (R-VA) and George Will are also skeptical of indexing.

But wait! Here’s Lott just last week:

Mr. Bush has praised Mr. Pozen’s plan of “progressive indexation,” or reducing the rate of growth in benefits for higher income earners.

Senator Lott, a Republican of Mississippi, agreed that the change in indexation was necessary to reduce “explosive growth” in benefits

Surely, Lott’s apparent flip-flop had nothing to do with this. No way, no how.

Haha — must be payback to Bush for throwing him under the bus while taking DeLay under his wing.

  2. Thom says:

Lott’s still trying to have it both ways as his welfare crack shows.

Otherwise, a means test for social security–which de facto is what the indexing amounts to–should not be out of bounds for discussion.

But I understand why no one with good sense wants this administration to have anything to do with Social Security reform. So far, it’s all been a horrendous scam. So when the occasional plausible idea surfaces, the Democrats are right not to take the bait.

Vote these deceiptful theocrats–the Frist, DeLay Santorum LLC crowd–out, and then we can have a real discussion about saving Social Security.

It can wait a few more years until we have a government that actually considers the best interests of the American people.

Lott is saving his capital for the Strom Thurmond Legacy Act.

  4. Russ Ruszkowski says:

Here’s the deal: Lott, when approached by the media, will say whatever is in the air that day – that’s what today’s politicians do, no?

Later, he can vote his conscience (you know, with the Republicans – like always).

Afterwards, IF the media would challenge his vote (they usually roll-over), he can make-up some happy horseshit about how he studied the issues and blah blah blah it’s best for America – the same old crap that’s already been written by Frank Luntz.

    – The outrage is still there, but damn…
