The Everglades is such a holy, sacred place--to be honest, I think the idea of development on the edge of the Everglades is "inconceivable" to most people who have an intimate knowledge of the place. The reaction I've gotten back from my high school friends is one of shock and outrage, but definitely more shock than anything else. The UDB line is a legal technicality...but I think many (probably the vast majority) of south Floridians already have the idea in their minds of the Everglades as a set-aside place with which you don't interfere. It's not like Key West or Biscayne Bay or Lake Okeechobee--all of which should be cared for diligently but, let's be honest, historically, there just hasn't been the same devotion to those spaces.
