Wal-Mart Casts Stones

Wal-Mart Casts Stones

Wal-Mart adIt’s bad enough Wal-Mart approved and funded this hysterical ad featuring a Holocaust Museum photo of a Nazi book-burning to fight an “anti-big box” measure in Flagstaff, Arizona.

But here’s one additional irony: these book-burnings were one way the Nazis used censorship to supposedly cleanse the country of “un-German” thoughts.

And, well, who doesn’t remember this delightful memory:

If you’re looking to buy a copy of Robert Greenwald’s superb documentary, “Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War,” don’t go to your local Wal-Mart. Anderson Merchandising, the company that picks the movies that are sold in the retail chain, has told the distributor of the movie that the film is inappropriate for Wal-Mart.

Or this one…

Retail giant Wal-Mart has banned America (The Book), a fake textbook written by Jon Stewart, the host of The Daily Show, from its stores.

Put your money where your mouth is, DON’T SHOP AT SAMS OR WALMART. I have boycotted them for 2 years and don’t miss Walmart at all. Costco is better than Sams and they treat their employees fairly. The only way these giants will be affected is when they start to feel a financial pinch.

  2. Susan says:

    Same here Sam.
In my area we have Target stores and Costco.
There is absolutely no reason to do business with Sam Walton. He is as un-American as they come!

  3. Thom says:

That it comes from the Holocaust museum is equally bad. We already have the problem of Holocaust deniers.

We don’t need companies like Walmart trivializing the crimes of Nazi Germany to advance their own self-serving profit-seeking agenda.

No valid comparision exists here between the zoning restriction against big-box (large scale) retailing, and the book burning/censorship of Nazi Germany.

The people in Flagstaff, Arizona can buy/read all the books they want. Unless, of course, as Nico pointed out, they’re shopping at Walmart.

Btw, that Greenwald production is excellent–and I think Unconstitutional: The War on our Civil Libertiesmight be even better.

  4. Matthew says:

I am always frightened by people who need the bible to tell them to do basic stuff, like “don’t kill”, or in this case, “Pay your workers”…

  5. Susan says:

I totally agree with you Matthew.
We are taught at a very young age the difference between right and wrong.

the WalMart suits must be laughing hysterically at the various ironies in this campaign, guffawing at the lack of the attention it will get from the mass of the population and the MSM. They have no shame, nor any inclination to change.

Contact Wal-Mart, be polite and direct.

    About Wal-Mart:
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is the world’s largest retailer, with $256.3 billion in sales in the fiscal year ending January 2004. The company employs more than 1.5 million associates worldwide in more than 3,600 facilities in the United States and more than 1,570 units in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, China, Korea, Germany and the UK.

Also, while its not a definitive source as of yet, BuyBlue.com is a good place to start to look for “progressive” outlets to spend your money. Look at locally owned businesses. I have a local discount outlet whose owner is active in progressive politics. While GM and Ford give most of their money to BushCo, many car retailers are progressives. Also by searching a political donors list on the net, I found a computer shop run by an very active progressive.
Just think what WalMart and businesses like them lost just half their politically moderate customers.

  8. Ron says:

Wal-mart isn’t going to die on the vine because a few thousand politically active minds quit shopping there.

I took a roll of film to Wal-mart to have developed. The film contained some pictures that were not offensive nor was the content of a sexual nature in any way or form. However, the photolab refused to develop the film.

I have never returned to Walmart to have any more film developed. What I want to photograph is my business and Wal-mart can keep its nose out of my business.

Seems as though Wal-mart wants to stick its nose into other people’s business, when they should be keeping it to the grindstone.

I can’t say I don’t shop at Wal-mart, but I can still say they suck. That’s my business.

The Nazis burned Sigmund Freud’s books. He was also an apologist for their actions.

“What progress we are making. In the Middle Ages they would have burned me. Now they are content with burning my books.” – Sigmund Freud

They also banned at lesat one Sheryl Crow album (because of a single line about buying a gun “at Walmart Discount Stores” If they didn’t sell Guns then I could understand them being upset about it. But they do. The song wasn’t critical of the retailer, I assumed that the lyrics just fitted. But they took it personally.

However, I feel a boycott isn’t going far enough. If we can go to Walmart and ONLY buy their loss leaders we’ll have an even bigger effect on them. :-)

We have a small Wal-Mart in our town — yes, there is such a thing as a small Wal-Mart — and the only books you’ll find there are children’s books, and a large magazine rack. No worries about any “real” books. I wouldn’t shop there to save my life, even though Costco is one hour south, and Target is two hours north. It’s a lovely drive…

  12. dawn says:

I have also boycotted Wal-Mart almost a year ago – and I have no problem with spending a dollar more from a small business than to support the evil doer that is known as Wal-Mart. The walmartization of our nation is killing small business, communities, and culture! Say NO to Wal-Mart!!
