March 1, 2005: Santorum Blasted Byrd For Hitler Comparison

A few minutes ago, Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) went on to the Senate floor and compared those who opposed the nuclear option to Hitler.

On March 1, Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) made a reference to Hitler in a speech about the nuclear option. Santorum lashed out at Byrd for his remarks. From the 3/11/05 Charleston Journal:

Byrd roused the ire of many Republicans when he tangentially referred to Adolf Hitler during a speech on March 1 defending cloture and the right to debate.

[Snip]

Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., asked Byrd to retract his comments, stating they “lessen the credibility of the senator and the decorum of the Senate.” The Anti-Defamation League also criticized Byrd.

What a difference 10 weeks make.

UPDATE: Watch the video of Santorum on the floor today.

Yet another reason why Santorum, Mr. Man-Dog Love himself, is a charter member of the American Taliban.

Among his other bits of wisdom:

“I would argue that the future of our country hangs in the balance because the future of marriage hangs in the balance. Isn’t that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?”

  3. kindness says:

Why do the people of Pennsylvania keep voting for this guy? It isn’t a hard red state or anything.

Please, democratic party, please. Put some middle of the roader up against him in this next election so we can get 1 more democratic Senator.

  4. Jon says:

Robert Novak apparently also knows Nazis when he see them.

May 14, 2005 Edition of Crossfire:

HUNT: Bob, why would Senator Frist refuse an offer to break the deadlock?

NOVAK: Because the whole system (INAUDIBLE) you’re not going to have — like going to a concentration camp and picking out which people go to the death chamber. You’re not going to let the Democrats do that, say, We’re going to — we’re going to confirm this person, we’re not going to confirm the other person. They’re going to — they’re going to say that this is not the way we’re going to do it. They’ve had all kinds of different offers of that kind. [Emphasis added.]

  5. Susan says:

Republicans just get pissed when a Democrat makes a great statement before they do.

The Democrats have referred to many Republicans as being “”Hitler like”…
    If the shoe fits.

  6. Blake says:

I’m shocked…shocked…that Santorum sells out for what is politically expediant at the moment.

  7. buckshot says:

If this is a surprise, you must not have listened to many such discussions.

Hundreds of members of both parties have suggested the opposition is “Hitler-like” in some manner or other. ho hum.

Tempers are really going to flare. Get used to much heated rhetoric.

The problem for Dems is that the water is already under the bridge – the horse is already out of the barn – it’s too late to close the door.

The time for a rational plan was BEFORE the election. Instead, the Dems chose Kerry, tried to lower the voting age to 16, went after the welfare vote, the felon vote, and the illegal alien vote, and liberal judges tried to force gay marriage down America’s throat, all just before the election!

    What a strategy!!

Enter “falling bomb” sound here. End of Dem chances. Better luck in 2008.

The time to prepare a sane strategy is now. Put aside the hysterical screeches of “raise taxes”, and come to terms with who the mainstream really are – working, bible believing decent people who believe a family is a man and a woman and children.

  9. Cheryl says:

Buckshot? What’s with the name…trying to emulate one of those imbred undereducated bible belt types who are working their hardest to replace our democracy with a theocracy? Or does it mean you can’t hit the target and need the spray action? Shotguns are easier so even the IQ impared can use them. Or is it just a wannabee thing?

Why do you even care what the so-called evil heathen liberals think anyway? I’ll bet the rotten to the core Pat-raving fanatic-Robertson has a web site that would appeal much more to your Repuplican Reich mentality.

  10. dan says:

Buckshot seems to think be told that since some judges don’t agree with the American Taliban’s positions, that they all must be liberal. I’m sure Ronald Reagan
(whom we know was the ultra-liberal, right?) went out of his way to choose some bleeding-heart liberal when he nominated Justice Kennedy, the new whipping boy of the right. We all know how LIBERAL he is. Judge Greer in the Schiavo case? Was he a liberal? Of course he was, he was a REPUBLICAN who went to a Baptist church too until it kicked him out. Gosh, I never knew how much power those liberals had. Guess those moderate Republicans are liberal too and don’t forget the media! I’m sure they’re waiting for even a bigger smoking gun than the Downing St. memo to bring down Bush.

  11. KEVIN SCHMIDT says:

Of course, traitor Bob Novak ignores what is said by Republicans. He can only lie about the Democratic Party and criticize the digitally altered Howard Dean scream.

  12. dan says:

Even more delicious, was Judge Richard Kramer, who said there was no rational reason to limit marriage between a man and a woman in California a liberal? I guess the word liberal even includes Catholic Republicans.

  13. buckshot says:

    Cheryl,

My great grandpa gave me the nickname. I was hoping for more stimulating dialogue than discussion of such trivia.

    Dan,

I don’t follow you at all.

  14. Bob says:

What we have now, as far as I am concerned, and will be self evident in two or three years is a Dictatorial therocracy. Laugh if you will but the months and years will prove that I am right. And BTW, I HATE IT!

  15. boogidyboo says:

  16. mwb970 says:

Between this Santorum fool, the empty-headed Norm Coleman and the even more vapid George Allen, I think the quality of Republican senators is seriouisly declining. Goodie!

  17. Debbie says:

OUTSOURCE SANTORUM – I’m an angry and embarrassed PA voter-check out my site. Some like minded folks in DC are now sporting these as well: http://mysite.verizon.net/vzep4oy8/proudlyblue-bumperstickers/

  18. QandO says:

    Santorum, Hitler and little history
First, it was Senator Byrd comparing the end of judicial filibusters to Hitler…unfavorably. Now, Senator Santorum steps up to the Stupid Plate…

  19. antares says:

I’m just saddened that both sides use reference to the horrors of WW II atrocities as mere political buzz words. If some one/institution IS being Nazi or Hitler like, then call them on it. Like oh, I don’t know… demonizing a religion for political purposes, rounding up that religion’s followers on no legal grounds and imprisoning them. That I would compare to Hitler.

Overuse of the word just sanitizes it and saps its power. The attrocities of the Nazi regime need to have the same association to the word. Using it frivolously diminishes the shock of those attrocities.

  20. Krazny says:

I agree that the nazi references need to be dropped at this point from both sides. All it does is trivialize the holocaust.

  21. Susan says:

If we drop it, another may occur…I say keep it fresh in your minds.
With this administration anything is possible and I for one am watching my back.

  22. hubert says:

Tis unfortunate that politics in the USA have been reduced to something akin to a spectator sport, certainly comments like those of both byrd and sanatorum fuel this fire.

  23. taylor parson says:

    To Buckshot:
What you don’t seem to realize remains absolute: gay marriage doesn’t involve you or anyone else. No one shoves it down your throat. You simply choose to argue against it (and vote against it) for irrational reasons. Personally, I am tired of heterosexuals shoving marriage down my throat simply because I’m 25, in school and a straight female. If marriage were sacred, the Bachelor/Bachelorette TV spectacles wouldn’t exist.
