Today, President Bush was asked about the growing casualty numbers in Iraq:
Question: “Mr. President, as you know, the casualties of Iraq is again high today — 50 more people dying. Do you think that insurgence is getting harder now to defeat militarily? Thank you.”
Bush: “No, I don’t think so. I think they’re being defeated. And that’s why they continue to fight.” [Bush, 5/23/05]
Over the past couple of years, Bush and his advisors have consistently argued that increases in violence is evidence that the insurgency is losing. As a result, the administration has failed to acknowledge, much less address, fundamental problems in the fight against the insurgency. Here are a few more examples:
The Elections
Bush: “As election day approaches, we can expect further violence from the terrorists. You see, the terrorist understand what is at stake. They know they have no future in a free Iraq, because free people will never choose their own enslavement.” [Bush, 12/7/04]
Andy Card: “They’re attacking, but they’re not attacking all of the people all of the time. They’re kind of running timid campaigns to try to intimidate people from participating in democracy.” [ABC This Week, 12/19/04]
The Transfer of Sovereignty
Condi Rice: “Obviously there is a difficult security situation. They’re making an appeal to Iraqi citizens not to let the foreign terrorists and the rejectionists, who have no future in a free Iraq, not to let those people derail the political transition that is taking place, and I think they’re being quite successful with the Iraqi people.” [ABC This Week, 6/27/04]
McClellan: “Well, we’ve said that as Iraq moves forward on holding elections, that you can expect the terrorists and the Saddam loyalists to continue to seek to derail that transition, because they know it will be a significant blow to their vision.” [WH Press Gaggle, 7/16/04]
Bremer: “The dead-enders can see that all this, plus the fact that the Iraqi people will get their sovereignty back, spells trouble for them,” Bremer said. “So I think we will see a phase now when we will actually see increased attacks,” he said. [AP, 12/5/03]
I just can’t wait until Rep Pelosi, Senator Reid and Governor Dean offer the American people an alternative to the GOP run occupation and create party plank to end the war in Iraq and get out now and focus on the real terrorist threat. We need to follow the lead of RFK and offer the American voters a real alternative.
May 23rd, 2005 at 5:54 pmIt is my strong religious belief that there is nothing more un-Christian that a war based on lies.
May 23rd, 2005 at 5:57 pmUhh, does that mean that if the insurgents start winning, they’ll quit killing people? If so, why don’t we just say, “OK, you win”? Reminds me of getting beat up in school. I guess the guy kept hitting me because he was losing. Man, I guess I won a lot more fights than I ever thought I did!
Now as I look back through George’s prism of “reasoning”, Chuck Wepner kicked the crap out of Muhammad Ali.
May 23rd, 2005 at 6:42 pmBushie and company are all on drugs from what I can tell.
May 23rd, 2005 at 10:32 pmAlso, the film footage of Americans leaving Saigon thirty years ago is actually evidence that our mission there was a success and our presence was no longer required.
May 23rd, 2005 at 11:47 pm“We need to follow the lead of RFK and offer the American voters a real alternative.”
That will have just about ZERO effect, since we have won both 2000 and 2004 presidential elections, and power has not been exchanged.
It’s a COUP! How much more ‘fooling-around-time’ do people need to actually cognize that simple fact? 30 states have NO recount right. Bush did not win Ohio. We paid the $120,000 for the Ohio Recount, and got bupkis. Well, we did get affidavits from election officials stating that the election had been stolen, if that’s anything.
Bush has no intention of leaving power in three years, or if he does, the rightwing has no intention of relinquishing power, regardless of no damn fake election.
So fight for your voting rights at the state level, or prepare for a VERY long decade or two.
As for poor, former-Iraq, what about Henry F* Kissinger’s statement (”There is no more Iraq; there will be three territories”) didn’t you understand? The policy is civil war — the policy has ALWAYS been civil war — and there was no intention from the start for it to go well for our soldiers.
They are nothing more than ground meat waiting to happen to these bullsht artists in the Shite House.
We are fighting in California. Fight in your states for voting rights, and if you are one of the Diebolded states, then you have to get rid of your SecState at the next opportunity, because anyone who accepted paperless, ‘trust us,’ balloting from these bastards sold you down the river.
May 24th, 2005 at 1:33 amAh yes, when Vietnam was secured, our troops victoriously retreated, bravely boarding helicopters and triumphantly shoving them off of ships to make room for the celebrations. Huzzah! They shouted. Huzzah!
May 24th, 2005 at 12:40 pmPaul in LA,
I like your fire and the sense of urgency. I’m not sure everyone here is on the same page (most seem to be) but you are correct, the voting machines are completely compromised. The fact that Diebold and one of the other primary purveyors of voting machine technology (can’t recall whether it’s ES&S or Sequoia) are owned by two hardcore Republican BROTHERS who refuse to make the code that runs on their voting machines (which determine the outcome of our f%^&* elections!) public. The fact that mainstream media isn’t screaming this from the hilltops is really all anyone needs to know about the current state of affairs.
coup indeed.
May 24th, 2005 at 10:08 pmPaul and Tom,
You two are really grasping at straws. If you think you won the last two elections, take a look at the red blue maps. GOP won about 95 percent of the districts in the country.
The huge number of liberal voters in a few socialist strongpoints (West Coast, New England, a few inner cities and Indian Reservations) do not win an election.
Although I cannot imagine the lunacy of paperless voting machines, that isn’t the problem for Dems. The problem is lame ideas, lame candidates, and no plan.
You are even losing the black vote, which Dems have taken for granted for decades. If the black vote shrinks to 70% Dems, you will never win another election.

May 25th, 2005 at 2:12 pmI submit an addendum to Godwin’s law:
When someone lumps all liberals and Democrats into one group of “socialists” as buckshot has done, the hope of intelligent conversation is over.
