Right-wing activist David Horowitz has printed two articles attacking ThinkProgress.org. His most frequent complaint is that we point out that Horowitz freely compared American liberals to Islamic terrorists. He has called the charge “slander.” It’s a puzzling position from someone who wrote a book called “Unholy Alliance: Radical Islam and the American Left.”
But let’s explore his argument. Here is a good summary:
As a highly educated former Marxist intellectual-turned-conservative, Horowitz uses political and ideological labels with precision. An “actual liberal” is different from a progressive and different from a leftist.
Horowitz claimed we were wrong because in his book he “praises American liberals and Democrats like Bill Clinton.”
But on his website Horowitz lists Clinton as a “moderate leftist” on the same page as Egyptian cleric Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman who was “convicted of hatching a plot to bomb the United Nations, FBI offices, and other New York landmarks.” So much for using “political and ideological labels with precision.”
Other mainstream liberals and progressives listed as leftists on the same page as Abdel-Rahman: Jimmy Carter, Hillary Clinton, John Podesta, Howard Dean, Barack Obama and John Edwards.
If Mr. Horowitz or any of his associates care to defend themselves, they are welcome to do so in the comments.
Coincidentally, I just noted today’s lead article of FPM is a continuation of Horowitz’s diatribe, claiming the left has joined forces with Islamic terrorists. Much of the info is culled from his equally offensive DiscoverTheNetwork. What a shameless hack.
For some less polite input on the topic:

It’s great to be a part of the majority!
June 7th, 2005 at 11:59 amA friend of mine has been targeted by Horowitz as a leftist academic. I am so totally jealous. I’ve begged my friend to out me to Horowitz.

June 7th, 2005 at 12:30 pmI would like to apologize; it seems David Horowitz found a link to ThinkProgress from this post on my blog; it turns out, the egotistical bastard was doing a Technorati search on his own name, and that post came up.
So he took li’l ol’ me to task in the first of those links (I responded here), as well, though my name and picture have yet to appear on the DiscoverTheNetwork page alongside Clinton and the sheik . . .
June 7th, 2005 at 12:49 pmHorowitz seems to be obsessed with race, in particualr that he and his white conservative brethen are the victims of rapid prejustice perpetrated by moderate fair minded Americans, amongst whom are other white folks and many African-americans. What kind of perverse mentality would other wise write a book entitled, ” Hating Whitey and Other Progessive Causes”. Horowitz jumped down the NAACP’s throat for suing gun manufacturers , he wrote, “Am I alone in seeing this as an absurd act of political desperation by the civil rights establishment? What’s next? Will Irish-Americans sue whiskey distillers, or Jews the gas company?” Disagreement is as american as baseball and apple pie, but to express that disagreement like a bile spewing member of the KKK is another thing. “Jews the gas company”,… amazing how low this his self loathing and hatred toward his fellow man will go.
Horowitz wrote also: “The Democratic Party has shown that it will go to the wall to preserve the racist laws which enforce these preferences, and to defend the racist school systems that destroy the lives of millions of children every year.” No data to back that up, but that never stops Horowitz.
Not to mention Horowitz’s bizarre ideas about equal ideology on campus, which boils down to, if you disagree with your professor over a point of view, conservative students should be allowed to sue. Talk about an assault on free speech. Can I go back and sue all the garbage I politely listened to from my conservative professors? Especially the one that thought that The Gilded Age with its robber barons, corrupt monopolies and when the majority of americans were wage slaves and subsistance farmers was America’s shining moment.
Cudos for being so open to debate with someone who is clearly not even capable of rational thought. That is both the strength and weakness of progressives, bending over backwards to be fair.
June 7th, 2005 at 12:49 pmOther mainstream liberals and progressives listed as leftists on the same page as Abdel-Rahman: Jimmy Carter, Hillary Clinton, John Podesta, Howard Dean, Barack Obama and John Edwards.
I hate to squabble over some minor bit of terminology, but… none of those people are even remotely progressive. They are all solid establishment types.
June 7th, 2005 at 1:21 pmHorowitz doesn’t even read his own discover the network site
June 7th, 2005 at 4:52 pmHorowitz is a racist, his followers, who incessantly changed “Kill them all,” are racists; they are Zionists, and that means racist; and they admit it if pressed.
His followers wave his pamphlets like the Little Red Book.
He isn’t an ex-Marxist so much as a Maoist.
Jews sueing the gas company. Har-har-har.
June 7th, 2005 at 6:01 pmSorry, incessantly CHANTED (not changed).
June 7th, 2005 at 6:02 pmI’m waiting to hear about his sex scandal and how much he will pay to “settle it out of court”..
