Is Bush’s New Nominee A Bigot?

On May 10, 2005, the current director of the U.S. Mint, Henrietta Holsman Fore, was nominated by President Bush to be the next Under Secretary of State for Management. In announcing the nomination, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Fore would be instrumental in helping to “expand and support State Department management initiatives.”

The position of Under Secretary of Management is a vital one, as described by the State Department’s website. It is responsible for leading the offices of administration and human resources, which deal with the hiring and firing of personnel. Fore’s nomination to this post has raised many concerns due to her record of making racially-insensitive remarks.

Yesterday, Sen. Barack Obama grilled Fore over her previous comments in which she suggested blacks prefer pushing drugs on the street to working in factory jobs. Fore’s remarks came from a speech she gave at Wellesley University in 1987. Here’s how the New York Times covered that speech:

A Wellesley College trustee’s remark that blacks preferred pushing drugs to working in a factory has precipitated an emotional debate on this bucolic campus already grappling with charges of racial insensitivity

The trustee, Henrietta Holsman, a 1970 graduate of Wellesley who runs a manufacturing concern in Los Angeles, resigned from the board last weekend after apologizing for her comments, which also cast aspersions on the work ethic of Hispanic and white employees. But in a letter to the college newspaper, Ms. Holsman reiterated her statement that she had trouble keeping black assembly-line workers from going ”back to the street to earn more money” selling drugs

In her lecture, Ms. Holsman also said she had found Hispanic workers to be lazy, white workers resentful of having to work with machines, and Asians, while very productive, likely to move on to professional or management jobs. [NYT, 2/12/87]

For, God’s sake, who does she like?

  2. Kip W says:

She likes rich people. They have a good work ethic, rising early in the morning to inherit money, and they don’t resent anybody — they hire smaller people to do that for them.

  3. pbg says:

Um–so nobody wants to work for her company? Maybe there’s a missing piece of insight here–you know, that she’s maybe a horrible employer?

  4. am says:

do the bushistas search for such people on purpose for government jobs?

  5. ronin says:

Um, as Barbara Ehrenreich put it in her book, Nickel & Dimed: why don’t you pay them more money?

  7. NTodd says:

She forgot to mention the wops are all greasy mobsters, the micks are too drunk to work (but not too drunk to f**k) and don’t get her started on the hebes…

Too bad Reggie White isn’t around anymore – he could be the next UN Ambassador once Bolton is scuttled.

  9. kindness says:

Like most dumbya nominations, if you dig through their checkbook, you will probably find that she donated scads of money to the B/C election/re-election campaigns. That is why she is being given this post most likely. Just todays news lists the new naming of the ambassadors to England & Italy as being Republican “Pioneer” members. At least there they were honest about it.

  10. Carl Manaster says:

I have just emailed my Senator, Barbara Boxer, with the suggestion that she should take all the Republican statements about how Dems were opposing Bush’s judicial nominations out of racism and throw them back at them.

  11. tom durkin says:

Are any of them NOT bigots?

  12. Richard says:

What a racist, I suppose if blacks don’t work for her company, the only thing left is pushing drugs. Did this racist follow the worker back to there communities. I DON’T THINK SO. I can imagine what its like to work for her.

  13. george says:

Come on, technically this isn’t THAT bad. She isn’t racist – she hates everyone! hahaha

Also, she didn’t say “blacks prefer pushing drugs on the street to working in factory jobs.” That’s just not true. What she said was that “she had trouble keeping black assembly-line workers from going ‘’back to the street to earn more money’’ selling drugs.”

That might be true. She might have actually had that trouble. Saying she had that trouble doesn’t make her racist, if she was telling the truth…

  14. Ottnott says:

But it isn’t true, George, which would make her a LYING racist.

I believe that it isn’t true for two reasons:

    1) Do you really think she knows why the workers left? I have trouble imagining that they took the trouble to inform her that they were leaving to take part in illegal activity.

    2) According to the one economist to study the matter, the typical drug dealer earns minimum wage while facing a very high risk of getting shot or imprisoned.

Google “Stephen Dubner” for the details of #2.

  15. Ottnott says:

Sorry, I meant “LESS than minimum wage”.

Here’s one excerpt from an interview of Dubner:
“Arlington, Va.: If drug dealers earn so little, why do they not seek alternative employment? It sounds as if even McDonald’s could be more lucrative.

Stephen Dubner: A lot of the street crack dealers we wrote about *did* hold down legit jobs as well, at McDonald’s and elsewhere. But if you’re earning $3.30 an hour selling crack (with the hope of advancing to a lieutenant, which still paid not even $10/hr) and $5.35 at McDonald’s, you still aren’t making much. A lot of the dealers asked Sudhir Venkatesh, the sociologist, to help them get “a good job” — as a janitor at the University of Chicago. These were kids who had no sense of how to build a career.’

A bigoted Republican. Now that’s a surprise. I bet she’s white and Christian too.

  22. scanner says:

Is that the same Wellesley College that Hillary went to? The one that Hillary’s new biographer (http://www.nypost.com/gossip/pagesix.htm) says has a culture of lesbianism? Perhaps Ms Fore should be opposed by the Christian Funies lest she espouse gay marriage. Sheesh

  23. Lichee says:

At least she’s qualified to be a senior Senator from West Virginia…

  24. Lichee says:

“According to the one economist to study the matter, the typical drug dealer earns minimum wage ”

REALLY?? I had no idea that the drug dealers’ employers were abiding by Federal Employment Statutes. Good for them, those adorable law-abiding drug kingpins!

  25. gino says:

Lichee, you think you are smug with cuteness. She has a political machine pushing her in West Virginia. I don’t recollect a groundswell of revolt that actually chose her to run for the office. More credibly, she ran for the office and got a lot of down home good ole political advertizing.

One is only qualified by the matter of substance, not merely because they are a “senior Senator” alone. What has she done in office Lichee? (kissed a lot of….)

And you entirely missed the drug dealer minimum wage story. Did you read the story? No. You did not. But instead you deliberately act all smart by characterizing them as “abiding by Federa Employment Statutes.”

That’s not the point and you know it. Either you are stupid man, or you are just another blankety-blankety troll with no soul.

    God save you man.

  26. Paul in LA says:

What has gone unmentioned and unreported was that Ms. Holsman’s factory manufactured assholes.

New assholes is one of the main needs of the R-traitor party (R-too). They go through assholes like they are made out of gold, which is an option — if Ms. Holsman can get some more ‘illegal non-combatant’ fillings gold bars like the last ones.

Indeed, the only stem cell research pitch that R-traitors will go for is using stem cells to manufacture more assholes. Since that was the original purpose of R-traitor stem cells in the first place, this will not violate the ’spending money to destroy life’ portion of Bush’s aneurism.

Holsman’s Assholes — for the day AFTER you yield to your mule that one time too often.

  27. WD40 says:

At least she’s qualified to be a senior Senator from West Virginia…

Times have changed since Thomas Jefferson. A barefoot snake handler is qualified to be a Senator from West Virginia today. In fact, that sounds like most of the Senators from the redward states.

  28. eclark says:

Y’all miss the point entirely. The lady was appointed precisely because she was a lousy employer and is a bigot.

  29. Phyllis Smith says:

It does seem as though Bush sorts through the masses to find the very least desirable people in the country to appoint to powerful jobs.

  30. Tom Rimes says:

Did she ever consider that she paid lousy wages and that is why nobone, not majority white or minority would want to stay in that position. Oh yea, she is a Republican and none of the consilder that.

  31. Jay Registrar says:

Is there any truth to the rumor that someone is offering a Million Bucks to pop Ken Lay?

  32. Former Drug Dealer says:

Many years ago, when I was much younger and not very bright, I used to peddle drugs to support MY habit. Who came up with the figures that say drug dealers make only minimum wage? Probably someone who has no first hand knowledge that went walking the streets asking stupid questions of people that would never honestly answer a question like that from a stranger.

I was someone that was actually earning money in that trade, lots of it. If there was no money to be made selling drugs, considering the risk, who would be stupid enough to do it? There is plenty of money to be made…that’s why people do it. If not, those white, suburban, Republican voting, Christians would never be able to get crack or meth for their personal use.

One needs to remember that your average illicit drug user is not a ghetto teen. The big money comes from soccer moms and NASCAR dads.

  35. Cecilia says:

Bigot-Republican? (repetitive). Did she try Jewish workers? Rather deal drugs than work? The neocons maintain ghettos and barrios /then draw their “employees” from the unspeakable life conditions they have created–from slum landlords to sweatshops. All the same.
From non-education to cannon fodder. They also brought in the cocaine with their support of S.Amer. dictators. And they invented the Prison Industry. From slumlords-drug importers – money launderers, to sweatshop owners–to:
    government positions. Its YOUR COUNTRY!
    Take it Back! Cecilia

  36. Liberal Lass says:

“Ms. Holsman reiterated her statement that she had trouble keeping black assembly-line workers from going ‘’back to the street to earn more money’’ selling drugs…”

I wonder just exactly how she knows that…is that the answer they gave in their exit interviews?

    Another racist Bushite…what a shock.

  37. Flabbergasted says:

I can’t believe how people just jump on the bandwagon and believe just what they want to believe. Do any of you know this lady or her company? Do any of you know that very recently well over half her company’s employees, including supervisors, were minorities? Do any of you understand that she (correctly) was more worried about running a successful company than about what color the faces of her employees were? Isn’t that the ultimate goal of minorities? For their skin color to not be a factor? I know that for me it is.

  38. HOLSMAN FORES AXEMAN says:

Flabbergasted you are obviously not in tune with current events
1-Holsman Fore does have issues with minorities and/or impoverished people
2-Holsman didnt have to take any funding out of her company since as a government appointed employee, she has reduced a significant number of government jobs while simultaneously contributing a specific amount (which does not need to be disclosed at this time) which leads to number 3
3-Her parents and the Bush’s are old friends. Holsman Fore and Bush practically grew up together – skiing in Vail, summers in Prague, etc…They have a history and therefore its was just giving an old friend another appointment since she has already been able to bleed one area of the government why not try for two…
4-She disregarded events in Denver Colorado UNTIL THE PAPER GOT WIND OF EVENTS, yet she had approximately 2 years to fix a problem.

obviously you do not perform sufficient research prior to engaging your fingers to type

  39. Flabbergasted says:

    Ok, Axeman, I’ll bite.

1 – She has issues with minorities? Although as I mentioned, over half of her company’s employees were minorities? What issues would those be? That the only minorities she is willing to employ are those that will help her company remain profitable? Great!

2 – I read and re-read it, but the point is still unclear to me. Is it that she had reduced the number of jobs? Is that wrong? Really? Would you really rather have the government pay more employees than is necessary to get the job done?

3 – So if you are remotely acquainted with the family of the administration, you are thereby disqualified from serving it? “Bleed one area of the government”? By cutting coin production costs by 20%, and saving the U.S. Treasury over $1 billion dollars the first year??? That seems to be exactly the opposite of “bleeding.”

4 – She “disregarded events”? Where are your facts behind this charge? She opened the investigation into the problem during the same month that the class-action suit was filed. I’m not sure how that involves “the paper.”

And let’s try to leave the personal little swipes out of this. Your “obviously’s” tend to get in the way of civil dialogue.

  40. HOLSMAN FORES AXEMAN says:

I have a minute so i will be brief:
1-You are only looking at part of the picture, she is in a powerful position at another organization
2-It is not cost effective to get rid of government employees to save money, then hire twice the number of contractors
3-No you are not disqualified for affiliations or acquaintances, since to the victor goes the spoils is usually true, however if you are unqualified then you should not be put/placed into a position that holds americans livelihoods in the balance
4-the denver issue was presented approximately two years before it went to the paper. The people felt they were not receiving any assistance and filed outside of the job and made the papers aware of the problem. It was only then she decided to get involved. They were then promised it would be quickly resolved if they kept quiet and advised not to talk to any papers – this is why other papers did not publish the story – the clock ticks on

    I withdraw the obviously comment

  41. Zoro says:

While I am not a mind reader, I can tell you that as a result of Fore’s policies at the Mint, in her wake a lot fewer minorities will be working there as a result of her and the administrations policies. They have been pushing very hard, using every means fair and unfair to “change the look of the work force. The more diverse workforce that is in place is morphing into one much more homogeneous in the ethnic and racial origins of their personnel. It is obvious to me that the idea here isn’t to save money as they will employ more workers to do the same work (badly) as well as another whole tier of managers and infrastructure. In the dark and unclean places in the minds of these right wing zealots there are simply too many minorities in government, and they mean to do something about that. I imagine the same thing will happen at the State Department when she’s confirmed. How does she know, you may ask.
    I work for her.
