Sensenbrenner Drunk With Power

Sensenbrenner Drunk With Power

Rep. James Sensenbrenner’s behavior at yesterday’s Patriot Act hearings was truly outrageous — but hardly out of character.

This is the same Sensenbrenner who wants to give Congress the authority to ‘police the behavior’ of judges, a full-fledged assault on the separation-of-powers doctrine.

The same Sensenbrenner who negotiated the REAL ID Act in a series of secret backroom deals from which minority party members were barred. The same Sensenbrenner who led efforts to ram through that controversial act without a single hearing in either chamber of Congress.

The same Sensenbrenner who literally rewrote amendments, offered by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and others, to make them appear to have been written to help sexual predators evade the law.

The same Sensenbrenner who was so desperate to obstruct the 9/11 Commission intel legislation that he actually rejected language that he himself had submitted.

The same Sensenbrenner who actually encourages the Patriot Act to be used in cases not related to terrorism.

At some point, one wonders: when does such disregard for limits, such extreme abuse of power, become something other than democracy?

I was watching c-span last night and all I have to say is the performance was astonishingly childish, from the way Sensenbrenner strictly enforced the 5 minute time limit, so that when, for example, Sheila Jackson Lee made a comment and asked a question that took 4 minutes and 39 seconds, Sensenbrenner informed the witnesses, there were four of them, mind you, that they had 19 seconds to respond to the way he gaveled the meeting closed over the vociferous objections of the Democrats.

I happened to be watching the Patriot Act hearing on C-SPAN yesterday (June 10, 2005) when Sensenbrenner blustered, banged the gavel without a motion for adjournment, stormed out, and cut the microphones. (Video of the incident can be found on many sites around the Web.) I was awestruck at the irony of the situation. Here is a man who, rankled at Amnesty International’s characterization of Guantanamo as a “gulag,” immediately resorted to the Soviet tactic of turning off the microphones of speakers with whom he disagreed! By doing so, he lent credibility to Amnesty International’s arguments and presented a chilling picture of the US as a country now subject to tyrannical, one party rule. (And, under the provisions of the Patriot Act, one that can silence dissent in secret and “disappear” those who disagree with it.) I am not a fan of either political party, and am especially alarmed when it appears that one of them is becoming so powerful that it can quell not only dissent but intelligent discussions of views with which it disagrees. We simply have to do something, folks, or democracy in the US is dead.

Isn’t it obvious that the U.S. military is in Iraq to foment and agitate the insurgence? No doubt it could have been quickly quieted or even avoided altogether had a full compliment of manpower been provided to begin with, given our superior firepower.

But then, you see the war would be OVER and we can’t have that. Not when wars keep defense contractors and their friends in business and rolling in dough.

No, my friends, we are there to prolong the war as long as possible.

In the meantime, the military can’t recruit enough volunteers
Chimpy’s not going to start a draft because then the sheeple would protest en masse and the corporate advertising and marketing media would have to cover the protests, just like in Vietnam

So, they’ve done something else. First, they have destroyed the schools (ignorant people are more maliable). They are launching our own Hitler Youth by sending military recruiters into middle and high schools to propagandize children to love the military. Fully anticipate ROTC training will eventually make its way to elementary school.

How will the military fill its ranks? Aside from indoctrinating our children, take note of recent events:

Jobs of any note or significance have disappeared, leaving a third world service economy.

They are trying to roll back gender rights so women are forced to have babies. Note pharmacists who refuse to sell birth control. When rules emerge that require pharmacists to provide them IF their pharmacy sells such products, the product will simply disappear from store shelves. Abortion rights will be severely restricted.

Toll roads will come back into vogue, curtailing travel rights to those who can afford it.

People formerly of the middle class will be thrust into poverty by crushing, usurious, runaway debt on credit and housing. Because of the new bankruptcy laws, no one (but billionaires and corporations) will ever get debt relief again. If you’re unemployed, you will be given the choice of joining the military or being sent to debtors prison where you will be forced to furnish slave labor for private companies in order to “work off” your endless debt.

YOUR CHILDREN and grandchildren will instead be born, raised and trained as soldiers from the time they are able to walk.

It is something other than democracy when a corporation lapdog like Sensenbrenner can get into office pretending to be a representative of voters. The same is true of all those right wing Republicans, and some of the so-called “Democrats” who value things other than the rights of citizens, posterity, and the common good. They value money and power — oh yeah, and “law and order.”

In the old days, people who made such a mockery of common good and decency would be pilloried — held up to public scorn. Today’s pillory, the news medium, is out of order, however, so these blockheads like Sensenbrenner just chug along, pushing us toward the fate of Ecuador and Bolivia.

  24. -jay says:

Rather than attempting to engage people such as Sensenbrenner in rational argument (clearly, the agenda of the plutocracy spurns reason) we should “grandstand” to the apathetic public. We should attack this man and his ilk in simplistic terms that appeal; call him unpatriotric, a fat pig, a coward, a liar, a sexual deviant, etc., etc. We won’t need to prove any of what is said, but we’ll look “stronger” and “decisive” — just like they do.

Bush Decision To Invade Iraq Pre-Dates 9/11

When it rains, it pours and the leaks keep coming. A new document released today in England and the Downing Street Memo prove that both Bush and Blair knew the invasion of Iraq was illegal. A war crime they needed to manufacture a legal justification for. Other documents tend to suggest that Bush’s decision was made long before he even took office. Then there is always PNAC (check the signatories here). This is fast becoming a bigger gun. It’s a white hot cannon barrel now, pointed right at Blair and Bush.

Some other links here, here, here, here and here

Ministers were told of need for Gulf war ‘excuse’

MINISTERS were warned in July 2002 that Britain was committed to taking part in an American-led invasion of Iraq and they had no choice but to find a way of making it legal.

The warning, in a leaked Cabinet Office briefing paper, said Tony Blair had already agreed to back military action to get rid of Saddam Hussein at a summit at the Texas ranch of President George W Bush three months earlier.

The briefing paper, for participants at a meeting of Blair’s inner circle on July 23, 2002, said that since regime change was illegal it was “necessary to create the conditions which would make it legal.

This was required because, even if ministers decided Britain should not take part in an invasion, the American military would be using British bases. This would automatically make Britain complicit in any illegal US action.

“US plans assume, as a minimum, the use of British bases in Cyprus and Diego Garcia, the briefing paper warned. This meant that issues of legality “would arise virtually whatever option ministers choose with regard to UK participation.

The paper was circulated to those present at the meeting, among whom were Blair, Geoff Hoon, then defence secretary, Jack Straw, the foreign secretary, and Sir Richard Dearlove, then chief of MI6. The full minutes of the meeting were published last month in The Sunday Times.

The document said the only way the allies could justify military action was to place Saddam Hussein in a position where he ignored or rejected a United Nations ultimatum ordering him to co-operate with the weapons inspectors. But it warned this would be difficult.

“It is just possible that an ultimatum could be cast in terms which Saddam would reject, the document says. But if he accepted it and did not attack the allies, they would be “most unlikely to obtain the legal justification they needed.

The suggestions that the allies use the UN to justify war contradicts claims by Blair and Bush, repeated during their Washington summit last week, that they turned to the UN in order to avoid having to go to war. The attack on Iraq finally began in March 2003.

The briefing paper is certain to add to the pressure, particularly on the American president, because of the damaging revelation that Bush and Blair agreed on regime change in April 2002 and then looked for a way to justify it.

There has been a growing storm of protest in America, created by last month’s publication of the minutes in The Sunday Times. A host of citizens, including many internet bloggers, have demanded to know why the Downing Street memo (often shortened to “the DSM on websites) has been largely ignored by the US mainstream media.

  39. Pan Fried American Patriot says:

The White House has declined to respond to a letter from 89 Democratic congressmen asking if it was true — as Dearlove told the July meeting — that “the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy in Washington.

The Downing Street memo burst into the mainstream American media only last week after it was raised at a joint Bush-Blair press conference, forcing the prime minister to insist that “the facts were not fixed in any shape or form at all.

John Conyers, the Democratic congressman who drafted the letter to Bush, has now written to Dearlove asking him to say whether or not it was accurate that he believed the intelligence was being “fixed around the policy. He also asked the former MI6 chief precisely when Bush and Blair had agreed to invade Iraq and whether it is true they agreed to “manufacture the UN ultimatum in order to justify the war.

He and other Democratic congressmen plan to hold their own inquiry this Thursday with witnesses including Joe Wilson, the American former ambassador who went to Niger to investigate claims that Iraq was seeking to buy uranium ore for its nuclear weapons programme.

Frustrated at the refusal by the White House to respond to their letter, the congressmen have set up a website — http://www.downingstreetmemo.com — to collect signatures on a petition demanding the same answers.

Conyers promised to deliver it to Bush once it reached 250,000 signatures. By Friday morning it already had more than 500,000 with as many as 1m expected to have been obtained when he delivers it to the White House on Thursday.

AfterDowningStreet.org, another website set up as a result of the memo, is calling for a congressional committee to consider whether Bush’s actions as depicted in the memo constitute grounds for impeachment.

It has been flooded with visits from people angry at what they see as media self-censorship in ignoring the memo. It claims to have attracted more than 1m hits a day.

Democrats.com, another website, even offered $1,000 (about £550) to any journalist who quizzed Bush about the memo’s contents, although the Reuters reporter who asked the question last Tuesday was not aware of the reward and has no intention of claiming it.

The complaints of media self-censorship have been backed up by the ombudsmen of The Washington Post, The New York Times and National Public Radio, who have questioned the lack of attention the minutes have received from their organisations.

It is something other than democracy when a corporation lapdog like Sensenbrenner can get into office pretending to be a representative of voters. The same is true of all those right wing Republicans, and some of the so-called “Democrats who value things other than the rights of citizens, posterity, and the common good. They value money and power – oh yeah, and “law and order.

In the old days, people who made such a mockery of common good and decency would be pilloried – held up to public scorn. Today’s pillory, the news medium, is out of order, however, so these blockheads like Sensenbrenner just chug along, pushing us toward the fate of Ecuador and Bolivia.

Rather than attempting to engage people such as Sensenbrenner in rational argument (clearly, the agenda of the plutocracy spurns reason) we should “grandstand to the apathetic public. We should attack this man and his ilk in simplistic terms that appeal; call him unpatriotric, a fat pig, a coward, a liar, a sexual deviant, etc., etc. We won’t need to prove any of what is said, but we’ll look “stronger and “decisive — just like they do.

Comment by Pan Fried American Patriot — June 11th, 2005 @ 11:59 pm
    40.

    Sensenbrenner Drunk With Power

Rep. James Sensenbrenner’s behavior at yesterday’s Patriot Act hearings was truly outrageous – but hardly out of character.

Seriously, and I am not engaging in hyperbole here, when the country proceeds along a path that inevitably leads to an almost total concentration of wealth in the hands of the top 1% of the citizens, a civil war is the only logical conclusion. In that war it is highly unlikely that the military will chose to side with their oppressors.

Here is a man who, rankled at Amnesty International’s characterization of Guantanamo as a “gulag, immediately resorted to the Soviet tactic of turning off the microphones of speakers with whom he disagreed! By doing so, he lent credibility to Amnesty International’s arguments and presented a chilling picture of the US as a country now subject to tyrannical, one party rule. (And, under the provisions of the Patriot Act, one that can silence dissent in secret and “disappear those who disagree with it.) I am not a fan of either political party, and am especially alarmed when it appears that one of them is becoming so powerful that it can quell not only dissent but intelligent discussions of views with which it disagrees. We simply have to do something, folks, or democracy in the US is dead.

    WAKE UP AMERICA…

It not only can happen here…it HAS happened here. One party totalitarian rule by plutocrats and theocrats is HERE NOW.

Anyone who believes future elections will be any more meaningful than the last three national elections (and god knows how many more localized ones) is living in a dreamworld.

    They have Diebold.

    Get it?

If you’re unemployed, you will be given the choice of joining the military or being sent to debtors prison where you will be forced to furnish slave labor for private companies in order to “work off your endless debt.

YOUR CHILDREN and grandchildren will instead be born, raised and trained as soldiers from the time they are able to walk.

THIS IS…the America these antichristian beasts have in mind for all of us.

    BELIEVE IT

Comment by Pan Fried American Patriot — June 11th, 2005 @ 11:59 pm
    40.

    Sensenbrenner Drunk With Power

Rep. James Sensenbrenner’s behavior at yesterday’s Patriot Act hearings was truly outrageous – but hardly out of character.

Seriously, and I am not engaging in hyperbole here, when the country proceeds along a path that inevitably leads to an almost total concentration of wealth in the hands of the top 1% of the citizens, a civil war is the only logical conclusion. In that war it is highly unlikely that the military will chose to side with their oppressors.

    Get it?

    BELIEVE IT

Now Larry has stolen my artwork completely. Look here: http://larry-bernard.blogspot.com/2005/06/try-again-spanky.html

And he’s taunting me. But, his link to my site seems to be broken? Huh.

  51. parody troll patrol says:

Yeah, but they are shreiking like banshees over the leaks. Bush is crippled for the rest of his term, which could end in 2006. Enjoy it. let him have the photoshop. You can always do more. You are creative. He can only steal it. That’s why he is a Republican and we ain’t.

  52. James says:

James richardson…2008 will bring about another battle for Democracy. It will likely be the worst one yet. The republicans have learned that elections can be won by dishonest means, creating false fears, and lieing about everything in general. If the republican party told the truth they would literally cease to excist.
The patriot act is all about controlling American citizens….the people who will rise up against the global dictatorship that is now being installed into American government.

  53. Rick Rusch says:

    Dear Friends,

Democratic members of the Judiciary Committee continued to discuss the renewal of the Patriot Act for ten minutes friday after chairman Sensenbrenner filibustered the meeting to a close. He criticized the witnesses, slammed the gavel, and stormed out of the room after just having a vote to allow each witness one addition minute for closing comment. Rep. Jerrold Nadler’s point of order was ignored by a seemingly satisfied Sensenbrenner and the microphones cut by the committee staff. Nadler continued saying that “as for those of us who question some of the acts of the current administration. We are seeking to make sure that our tradition of liberty and freedom is continued. We are not besmirching the honor of the United States, we are trying to uphold it.”

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee also spoke and appologized for the shameful actions of the Committee Chair. Remembering that we need to shed light on this dark time-as we have other dark times in our democracy. She noted that “the Patriot Act as it presently contrived denies the rights of individuals who are innocent.” Representative Bobby Scott continued to ask the witnesses how a person factually innocent of a charge would ever be able to present their case to a hearing? Noteing that the Attourney General said the opprotunity to be heard would be at the end of the conflict.

Open ended detainment and administrative rubberstamping of warrents are a real threat from the Patriot Act. Maybe it was good for millins of C-Span viewers to see the furor that erupted after Chairman Sensenbrenner’s filibuster of the committee. Nancy Pelosi called the move a “shameful attempt today to silence Democrats at hearing this morning on the impact of the Patriot Act,” and demanded the Republican leadership force Sensenbrenner to apologize.

There is nothing unpatriotic about asking questions, and we do need to do that-we’re in serious jepordy. Support the warriors in our congress (202) 225-3816 Jackson, Conyers (202) 225-5126, and Nadler (202) 225-5635. Call the capitol switchboard (202) 224-3121 and tell your representative not to trade freedoms for security in the USA Patriot Act.

  54. Valerie says:

What Sessenbrenner’s conduct says to me is that he believes a committee chair should have dictatorial control over the content of statements and testimony presented by witnesses. If he is that drunk on his own power, we need a resignation.

  55. Ron says:

An email I sent to senselessbrenner:

I am sending this email to you because, as a REAL AMERICAN, I am terribly ashamed of your misconduct and unacceptable behavior while trampling upon the rights of our representativces during the “patroit act” so-called hearings which is representative of what you and your “friends” are doing to my country.

Your immature conduct was clearly ANTI-AMERICAN and obviously intended to benefit your fellow cronies in the administration at the expense of those of us who are REAL AMERICANS and love what used to be our country.

I am a resident of Wisconsin, a home owner and a self-employed businessman.

You and those in your regime are trampling upon the values and morals for which those of us like myself stand.

    Shame on you, james sensenbrenner.

The conduct of you and your cronies demonstrates what is wrong with our government.

You do not represent what we as REAL AMERICANS truly want.

What we truly want are people in government that will stop stealing from us in every way possible, financially, legislatively, morally and by causing so much of the world to be against us.

I fully expect repercussions from your and your cronies due to the fact that I would DARE to use my 1st AMENDMENT rights(remember those?) to berate you for your misconduct.

After all, your regime has continually worked to see that we cannot exercise our AMERICAN way of life through expressing our dissatisfaction with those who are so clearly misusing their power for personal gain.

I am NOT making any threatening statement of any sort here however, as is the way of your “friends” in what used to be my government, I will expect to be set up and/or punished for this.

Therefore, I will be sending a copy of this AMERICAN’S email to my Representative, David Obey and to many other friends to protect myself from those of you who would destroy what my fellow AMERICANS and I have worked for with our hearts, labor and hopes and dreams.

Again, james snensenbrenner, SHAME ON YOU AND YOUR CRONIES.

  56. Susan says:

    Good for you Ron.
I’m sure the tantrum throwing Snensenbrenner will defend himself by saying that “the democrats are a party of no idea’s”…
They like to use tired old lines when they get busted.

  59. Ron says:

Ron could be a Wisconsonian, a business owner and a home owner.

    However, I’m not that Ron.

  60. Skid says:

Way to go, “letter-writing-Ron”, I’m right behind you. As macabre as it sounds, I would love to see the reaction on your face when the “Thank you for your comments…” letter comes back to you. I regret not having a camera around when I received my response letter from Mr. Denny “the Toad” Hastert. One of these days…

  61. Vaughn D. Taylor says:

I’ve received a ton of traffic for the Sensebrenner as Hitler picture. Most notably, a visit from somebody at house.gov, which was immediately followed by a visit from somebody at irs.gov. Eeek.

I’ve said this before, and I will say it again. If I mysteriously disappear, I am extremely happy and not prone to just wandering off. I’m kinda joking with this comment, but things are getting really scary lately in our country. We may soon see a revival of McCarthyism.

  62. Auntie America says:

Just pay your taxes, Vaughn my friend. You may get audited, but that’s about it. It’s no fun, but it’s not as bad as a root canal.

  63. Auntie America says:

You may get audited, Vaughn. But that’s about it. It’s not that bad. It’s not fun, but it’s painless.

  64. beanie says:

Many of us who live in Sensenbrenner’s district in Wisconsin are working hard to elect the democratic candidate running against him. Bryan Kennedy ran a great race against Sensenbrenner in 2004 with significant grassroots support and immediately started fund raising and campaigning to challenge him again in 2006. Bryan is a viable candidate with common sense ideas. Please help defeat Sensenbrenner in 2006 by donating to Bryan Kennedy’s campaign at http://www.bk2006.org.
By the way, if you think Sensenbrenner lost it during that committee hearing, you should see him with his constituents who dare to disagree with him or question him at one of his Town Hall meetings in his district. He readily cuts people off in mid sentence, gets red in the face and shouts at people. This guy is out of control. In case you haven’t heard, Sensenbrenner is a millionaire who inherited his fortune from his great grandfather’s invention of Kotex. Apparently, he gets really angry when people on the hill call him “Tex”! Bottom line, please do what you can to help spread the word about how to boot Senselessbrenner “Tex” in 2006.
