McClellan Living In Fantasyland

At his press conference today, Scott McClellan tried to make the case that the security situation in Iraq is getting better:

QUESTION: Scott, you said that the president is talking with Talibani, talked about the security situation. Did they express their concerns about the rising level of civilian casualties and the deaths of American troops?

MCCLELLAN: I think the president and Talibani — actually, some of the numbers have been coming down, but they’re still are difficulties that remain.

The facts don’t back him up.

May was the deadliest month for U.S. soldiers since January:

The overall U.S. death toll in Iraq last month – counting active-duty as well as mobilized reserve forces – was 80. That is the highest for any month since January…The 80 deaths compare with a monthly average of 70 over the previous 12 months.

Deaths among Iraqi civilians were also up sharply in May:

Iraqi civilian deaths in May increased by nearly one third from the previous month, a Health Ministry official said…Dr Sabah al-Araji, of the Health Ministry, said 434 civilians were killed in May, up from 299 killed in April.

It’s hard to find a solution when you can’t admit you have a problem.

I guess he was channelling Dick Cheney instead of parlaying the latest from the military on the ground in Iraq.

    Classic!

It’s hard to find a solution when you can’t admit you have a problem.

Sadly, I don’t think he has any problem with our troops being slaughtered.

For more of Scott McClellan’s profound state of denial, see:

  4. liberal elite says:

After a while, it becomes all too painfully obvious that the main obstacle to finding a solution seems to be the people unwilling to admit the problem.

  5. Flamethrower says:

some of the numbers have been coming down, – that would be the number of healthy and/or living soldiers that is coming down.

  6. Dubya says:

No Bush children are in danger of dying in Iraq.

  7. Paul says:

Why the surprise ? Here’s a guy who is paid to lie for a living.

  8. Bill Trembley says:

How can a man deny death and destruction? Where did McClellan learn about Math? The arrogance of the president’s “spokesman,” is unbelievable. I bet he did read one book: “The Fine Art of Lying,” by Josepy Goebbels.

  9. John Schoo says:

I ask: ” Why would any self respecting journalist continue to attend any of these “briefings”? There is no truth, no logic and no dignity in sitting there to be spun until your eyes gloss over.

  10. Tony says:

You go, Scotty! Obviously in BushWorld, if you say something is true, and wish really, really hard, the Jesus will make it so.

Mclellan and his Orwellian disconnect from reality would be entertaining, and a case study for Psychiatrists, if it weren’t for that inconvenient death and destruction business.

  11. Dorothy says:

    Scotty thinking at the podium:

“There’s no place like home…theres no place like home…Auntie Emm! Auntie emmmm! It’s a twister!!!!

  12. Melissa says:

He never said what numbers are coming down. Talk about your doublespeak. Why wasn’t he asked what numbers he meant? It drives me crazy that interviewers never ask the questions I want answered.

  13. tom hoppe says:

what do you mean “some of the numbers have been coming down” ? yeah the bombings are slightly down but their lethality is way up. We call that efficiency

    what a dumb- dumb
