Inhofe Blows Hot Air

Inhofe Blows Hot Air

In this morning’s USA Today, Sen. James Inhofe (R., OK) complained:

“Despite the lack of a scientific consensus to warrant such measures, climate change alarmists — in the heat of the summer for the scariest effect — are promoting mandatory caps on carbon dioxide emissions.”

In fact, President Bush was one of those “alarmists.” He promised mandatory caps on CO2 emissions during his first campaign. In the Bush Environmental Plan — dated 9/29/00 — the president vowed:

“[If elected], Governor Bush will work to…establish mandatory reduction targets for emissions of four main pollutants: sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, mercury and carbon dioxide.”

Is this the same guy who, on the Senate floor, held up the latest Michael Chriton thriller novel as the definitive work on environmental science?

I wouldn’t be surprised if he introduced a bill directing all NSF resources to clone dinosaurs from fossilized tree sap.

Remember the Republican motto: It’s not lying if you really really believe it at the time!

This morning through Wonkette I read that some evangelical groups are joining with the ACLU to actually add regulation of CO2 to the 05 energy bill. Yea, I know, the link is from USA Today, yuck….blame Wonkette, but it was an interesting notion, Bible Thumpers & quasi-Satanists laying down together.

Jared Diamond points out in Collapse that in many situations the alarmists are fringe figures with a limited grasp of the science, but as you probe into the global warming debate you find that it is the mainstream climate scientists who really know the subject who are the most panicked. The counter arguments are being made by politicians (Inhofe) and industry employees (Cooney) and the right wing media (you fill in the blank).

Unfortunately, most Americans don’t listen to scientists. They think science is something you see on the Discover Channel or read about from hacks like Michael Chriton.
