Rush Joins Debate on Downing Street

Rush Limbaugh has decided to start covering the Downing Street Minutes. He wasn’t interested in the memos when they were first revealed and contained damaging allegations about the pre-war intelligence on Iraq. But since right-wing rumor mongers have recently decided to take a shot at destroying the reputation of the British journalist (Michael Smith) who reported on the memos, he thought it would be a good time to weigh in.

Limbaugh: “I purposely haven’t talked about this Downing Street memo much because, frankly, it didn’t interest me. And, you know, if it doesn’t interest me I’m not going to talk about it. And the reason it didn’t interest me is because it was just another one of these ginned up things by the libs, and it looks like it’s got some similarities to Bill Burkett and the forged documents of CBS and Rathergate It seems to me this name Michael Smith, seems to me that there was a guy by the same name who worked with Mary Mapes at CBS during this whole Rathergate.”

As reported on ThinkProgress yesterday, CBS has denied that this is the same Michael Smith who worked for Mapes. But the right feels they are entitled to spread whatever rumors they want based on scant evidence. The good news is that Rush seems to be joining the call for the White House to be asked whether they in fact dispute the authenticity of the memos.

I’m surprised no one pointed out to him the likelihood that there may be more than one “Michael Smith” existing in the English speaking world.

  2. Ted says:

These memos are forged. Smith supposedly destroyed the copied originals and released re-typed copies. RIGHT! Can you say “RATHERGATE”! You stupid libs just don’t get it. You cannot stop the Conservative Movement! We have taken over permanently! Deal with it!

  3. Zookeeper says:

    Hey lookie, it’s Ted.

  4. Michael W says:

    Hey Ted

Funny Thing, it’s called independant verification of the documents. NBC did it so did the AP as I’m sure FOxnews and CNN did.

But perhaps the best evidence lies in Blair basically saying they are legit.

get a life read a little more….maybe if for every Ann Coulter Book you read you should read some history or anything else.

Maybe then you’d be normal again.

  5. John the Elder says:

Ted = long on wind, + short on intelligence =neocon…Get a life Teddy

  6. t0m says:

Ted, instead of slamming the memos, you need to make your real point: Tell us Bush did not fix the intelligence, exagerate the WMD threat, or decide to go to war when he told the country he hadn’t.

    Local Troll Makes Good!

Yea, that’s what the headline might look like in Ted’s world. Thankfully, most of us live in the real world.

But Ted, all is not for lost. You paid us a very good service by showing us just what calibur and intallagence level Rush’s listners really come from. PS – got any Oxycotin you can send to Rush? He’s in a BAD way if you know what I mean….

  8. Dallas says:

Ted, if you would really listen to what was said about the original documents, you will find that Michael Smith made a copy of the Downing Street Memos, RETURNED THE ORIGINALS TO PERSON WHO GAVE IT TO HIM, had the document typed up and then shredded the copy of the documents so as not to have any evidence of the person who leaked the memos. GET A LIFE!!! And stop telling us how to live and who to believe. We know Bush lied, he wanted to accomplish something his father failed to do and that was to get rid of Sadam. It’s about time you and the rest of the Republicans wake up and don’t just rely on FOX News to give you their side of the story (mostly because it is made up).

  9. David says:

Whatever happened to just wanting to learn more about a story? Everyone is so polarized that intellectual curiousity doesn’t enter into a discussion. If it turns out they were fake, then you can rest easy. But if they are true and we did not look closely enough at the outset, the recrimintions from the people of the nation and the world will begin. The implications of the Downing Street memos are such that they warrant a closer look if only to prove them wrong. Who wants to believe that American hubris has gotten so out of whack that they can depose a nation bypassing international law? No one I know of on the Right or the Left really wants this to be true. Carefully measured steps are needed.

Rush Limbaugh? Isn’t he the Repug’s Poster Child for “safe and sane” drug abuse? The Drug War must’ve stopped its march before it reached him…

That last post is clear evidence that there is going to be a 2nd civil war, no f*&$ing doubt in my mind.

  15. LeCar says:

    Ted
Wouldn’t it be great if Rush would don a uniform and go fight for a war he believes in so much.

Or maybe he’s a member of the Yellow Elephant group -where Ranting is Safer than Enlisting

The only acceptable strategy is one that eliminates the possibility that Iraq will be able to use or threaten to use weapons of mass destruction. In the near term, this means a willingness to undertake military action as diplomacy is clearly failing. In the long term, it means removing Saddam Hussein and his regime from power. That now needs to become the aim of American foreign policy….

…We urge you to act decisively. If you act now to end the threat of weapons of mass destruction against the U.S. or its allies, you will be acting in the most fundamental national security interests of the country.

  18. Jay says:

Laura, what exactly is the point of your post? You are linking us to the PNAC website who’s principal signatories also stated in regard to the future of American military defenses:

“the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor.”

…and then lo and behold, 9/11 happened. Hmmmmm…..

  19. Xool says:

What does that prove, Laura? That Wolfie and Rummy were all het up to get rid of Saddam 7 years ago?

Just to remind (or maybe enlighten) you, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney both have had long-standing business relationships with Saddam Hussein. The reason why they suspect that he had WMDs is because they sold them to him for use during the Iran-Iraq war.

  20. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

Laura, the big difference between Clinton and Bush is that Clinton was attempting to foment change from within Iraq. Bush, OTOH, chose to use US military power.

One approach allowed the Iraqi’s to figure out how best to proceed. The other approach forced something down the Iraqi’s throats that is proving to unpalitable.

Whaddya mean WE, Ted? Are you thinking that the Bush administration counts you as an equal and won’t be throwing you to the sharks at the first opportunity? Dream on…

  22. Laura says:

Really, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney were doing buisness with the “worst dictator in modern times” according to Secretary Condoleezza Rice, Jerusalem June 19, 2005?

    What kind of buisness relationship?
