Does Karl Rove Speak For Bush?

By Judd Legum on Jun 23rd, 2005 at 1:24 pm

Does Karl Rove Speak For Bush?»

George Bush, 10/26/01:

The elected branches of our government, and both political parties, are united in our resolve to fight and stop and punish those who would do harm to the American people.

Karl Rove, 6/22/05:

Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers. Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war.

Bush should be asked to explain this difference in opinion.

  1. jack Says:

Karl Rove should be fired. Period.

  2. Jay Says:

Karl Rove is only rivaled by Dick Cheney as the most despicable, ruthless, power-hungry, war-mongering, neo-fascist this nation has ever seen. He may not get his now, but there will be a time when his sins are punished, I’m sure of it.

  3. calif4nian Says:

As I remember it, America was attacked not just Republicans or only Democrats. It was all of us. But with Rove everything is political. He won’t be fired, no one in this administration is ever fired. He won’t step down either, unless he’s made to pay for his remarks. Let the drumbeats begin!

  4. Christy Says:

That’s like Rep. Duke Cunningham (the Dukester) invoking 9/11 for the flag amendment yesterday. He had the nerve to say: “Ask the men and women who stood on top of the Trade Center. Ask them and they will tell you: pass this amendment.”

  5. the daily phosdex Says:

    “Christy” commented:

If you ask me, such smells like emotionally-charged fanaticism of the worst sort to, in effect, regard Old Glory as something of a Holy and Sacred Object it was never intended to be (cf. Nazi Germany’s invoking the swastika flag as an icon of “Aryan Racial Honour”).

As if that weren’t enough, a North Carolina judicial candidate hath resigned from the GOP, calling the current Administration a “bunch of Nazis” and even questioning the loyalty of war critics, Joe McCarthy Red-scare stylee. Let’s just hope her action is but the first small step towards wholesale defections from the GOP, and that she deserves serious courage for her actions.

  6. calguy Says:

Apologize or be fired/resign. Harry Reid called this nicely (see here

  7. calguy Says:

ALso, call Rove’s number and blast the f*****. YOu will quickly be patched through to the White House comment line. Again, from Americablog–

  8. Skid Says:

So are we going to offer him therapy for his comments, or are we PREPARING FOR WAR?

  9. mcd Says:

karl rove makes howard dean look like a genius!

i can’t believe they’re coming apart at the seams like this — keep up the pressure!!!!!

  10. deegahl Says:

Of course Rove speaks for Bush-and probably writes for him as well. Bush’s comments were said right after 9-11 before he decided to go on a three year campaign to win the reps. primary. One in which he stills seem to be fighting. Have we ever had a more devisive group in charge before?

  11. LeCar Says:

Rove is a Yellow Elephant - one who prefers ranting over enlisting because it’s safer.

  12. John Fawcett Says:

Let’s speculate. Will the next GOP presidential candidate have Karl for their campaign manager?
    BF? Jeb?

Hopefully we can look back on this era like we look back on McCarthy era. Is it possible that not even McCarthy was as bad as Rove. I think so.

  13. Zookeeper Says:

I don’t know if I want Rove to shut the f**k up, or just keep on talking…

  14. logan Says:

Sorry, I’m as repulsed by Rove’s comments as anyone, but i don’t think quoting Bush from 01 before 9/11 is really accurate. He has played the partisan hack plenty of times since then…Not to mention the White House is sticking behind Rove on this one so that answers your question pretty directly.

  15. John the Elder Says:

All these administration cowards with no fathers…you all know what that makes them!!! and there is hardly a day that goes by that they don’t prove to the world just what they are. Hell is too good a place for this lot…ROVE RESIGN YOU SLIMY——D!

  16. Big Al Says:

I think that John in No. 12 has it right: The proper comparison of the current administration is not to the Fascists of Nazi Germany but to the McCarthy era in the 50s. Unfortunately for us, McCarthy was a single Senator and Bush and his colleagues control the White House and both Houses of Congress. McCarthy could be censured by the Senate and discredited. There is no recourse against Bush and company. It is a very scary time.

  17. skippy Says:

sort of (well, very) off topic, but skippy the bush kangaroo is interviewed on wrfl, the univ. of kentucky’s station, by ben carter of bluegrassroots.org.

to be fair, skippy does talk about the hypocrisy of the hardly-ever-right wing, and how they say one thing but are obviously only in it for the power and money.

skippy also waxes befuddled on a number of other subjects, including but not limited to, a mangled explanation of the downing street memos, ayn rand, putting christ back into christianity, half a masturbation joke, why blogging is important but not as important as the information itself (same goes for the main stream press), gov. ah-nold, black box voting, and the site’s co-bloggers!

  18. Don Garb Says:

Rove fired? Yeah sure, he’ll be fired the next time the Repuglicans lose an election, which will be NEVER! Face it chumps, you americans have lost your democracy, your freedoms, your tax dollars and your sons and daughters. These monsters will never give up the power they’ve gone to such lengths to steal. Better get used to Darth Rove’s whims, he will be ruling your fat NASCAR ass until the day you die. And now he can take your house!

  19. Jay Says:

Rumsfeld got reamed pretty good by Hillary today in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee, she cornered him pretty good and forced him to distance himself (somewhat) from Rove’s quotes.

check it out at buzzflash.com…good stuff.

Don G. do you realize how many Americans are fighting like hell in every way we know how, to stop what you describe from happening? We could use some support instead of taunting from wherever it is you write from. You’re either helping or your hurting this cause and God knows we could use the help.

  20. kindness Says:

I am a little surprised. Not so much by the reaction I’ve seen on the progressive sites, because honestly, no matter which side of politics one is on, I had thought that everyone would see that Rove was WAY OVER the TOP in how he paints his domestic opposition. Well, I went over to redstate.org to see what they are saying, and they are all going on about how democrats are treasonous and Karl had it exactly right. They can’t see how anyone could even think of disagreeing with what he said. I should have known better. I shouldn’t give some on the nutjob right any benefits reguarding their world or domestic view.

My recommendation, go over there and join & tell them what you think of them. Mind you, they’ll kick you out in no time (as they did me) but you may be able to open their minds just a tiny bit.

  21. kevin Says:

“And now he can take your house!”

That was funny. I have nothing else to add.

  22. David Says:

Trust me our Military would’nt let a load of pig **** like him (and thats real being nice) in the military. At the first site of trouble he would just turn and throw up his fat little pig holves and scream running like George Bush as a andover cheerleader.

  23. Ryan Neat Says:

Like waylan spoke for madam ;)

And we know where his hand is…

  24. Jon Says:

This is yet another example of why Karl Rove is #3 on the Avenging Angel’s Top 10 Unpunished Transgressors List.

  25. fake but accurate Says:

so durbin compares our troops to nazis, no prob, dean call republicans racists, nazis, etc., no prob, rove tells it like it is, that you libs are weak when it comes to our bloodthirsty enemies, and he needs a dressing down. at least half of you think bush and rove were behind 9/11. are you guys sure you aren’t kidding about this or are you all really this clueless and hypocritical? nevermind, you are.

  26. Susan Says:

Rove created Bushie and Rove will continue to create monsters like him.

Remember, whichever candidate is being managed by Rove is the candidate you vote AGAINST!

Watch the Documentary “Bush’s Brain”..it is a masterpiece that exposes the Rove machine and how Bushie got his reputation as a “puppet”..

  27. t0m Says:

so durbin compares our troops to nazis, no prob,

He didn’t actually, but since his words were misconstrued, he apologized. “no prob” in no way describes Democrat reaction to his comments, btw.

dean call republicans racists, nazis, etc.,

I’d like you to cite any instance of Dean saying either of those things. Or do you just make it up as you go along?

rove tells it like it is, that you libs are weak when it comes to our bloodthirsty enemies,

rove tells it like you think it is, that’s why you love him. Bush, Rove, Rumsfeld, and Cheney were all weak at the knees when it came to Vietnam. They’re not weak at the knees with others’ blood. Now tell us which Democrat wanted therapy for terrorists or admit your man rove is a liar. It has to be one or the other.

at least half of you think bush and rove were behind 9/11.

at least half… can you cite… oh nevermind I forgot. Reality doesn’t matter to you. Half the imaginary voices in your head, maybe.

are you guys sure you aren’t kidding about this or are you all really this clueless and hypocritical?

    Are you calling us Republicans?

  28. Melissa Says:

Yep something goes wrong and the answer is …go to war. Doesn’t really matter with whom. Just go to war. Pick some country you don’t like,(preferably with oil) and start bombing. If that doesn’t stop 19 people with boxcutters , nothing will. (actually , I don’t buy the 911 story at all, but it is their story )

  29. Gene Campbell Says:

What can you say about a guy like Carl Rove..? Have you ever seen a beedy eyed, cunning, little rat.. (did I say “little”..? How about a over fed, overbearing, obnoxsious, ASSHOLE rat)… scurrying away from danger, hinding and avoiding responsibility (like the draft) when he was a young rodent just leaving the litter….Now he ’s King Rat…a high ranking chickenhawk member of the Imperial Staff..a master of the art of hypocrisy…and like a rat, he is devious, visious, and ALL about self preservation…!He’s almost ( but not quite) as disgusting as that thing..Congress IT..Turd Defly..”Majority Leader” of the U.S. House of Rep….but I disgress.. Carl lies..distorts..distracts..and divides the country…if it’s not gays ( who are ..in fact fighting and dying along with Repubicans …Liberals…Democrats…Christians..Jews Muslims…blaks..whites..ect.)…it’s Liberals..not liberals…it’s “tree huggers” …not them…go to “flag burning”..not that..? go to “Defense of Marrage” not that..go to Social Security…anything to divert attention from the “Wrong War”..which is Iraq…(and ..like most people …I support the warrors..not this war…Afghan War was justified.. and that’s where we should have stayed) and that’s what this guy is about…and people like him…they take and take.. decciving..distorting..lying…and giving nothing in return..(. the “Im gettin’ mine…F–K you..!” crowd ) And if this is their “compassion” I for one, want nothing to do with it…

  30. Skid Says:

at least half of you think bush and rove were behind 9/11.

No, that half thinks it was the neocons behind Bush and Rove behind 9/11. Gotta keep an open mind though because they sure did some talkin’ about America needin’ another Pearl(e) Harbor…

  31. gonnuts Says:

    Rove resign? Yeah, right.
Believe this - I live for the day ALL these bastards get what they deserve. If any of these nit-wit facists had to resign for the stupid things they’ve said, we would of been done with them one day after they were put in office.

  32. gonnuts Says:

To Gene Campbell - comparing rove to a rat is giving rats a bad name.

  33. t0m Says:

If you want to assign responsibility for 9/11, Reagan fed the jihad movement in the 1980s.

But face it, most liberals don’t buy the conspiracy story. Most of us believe bin Laden when he said he did it. And most of us — by far most of us — wanted (and still want) them removed from the face of the earth. But Bush put off that dirty chore to go play Napoleon in Iraq.

  34. SteveS Says:

That is why I come to this Liberal site, to make sure your tactics have not changed; no facts, just lots and lots of emotional name calling.

    Now . . . . . isn’t that constructive?

  35. Jeff Says:

He looks more like a female impersonator minus the wig.

  36. Skid Says:

    You love it Stevie.

  37. R Says:

Speaking of female impersonators, all the Limbots showing up and whinnying about Dems calling thugs “Nazi” should go scold female impersonator Ann Coulter and Rush “feminazi” Limpblob instead.

  38. Teri DiCicco Says:

I think it’s time to start questioning why the republicans had such a quick response to 9/11 as Rove professes.

Let’s face it, they were given a heads up that “Al Qaeda was planning to attack within the United States”. Given that the Project for a New American Century practically begs for another Pearl Harbor in order to jump start the preemtive unilateral war agenda, the neocons were chomping at the bit for an attack. Hence, they ignored the warnings, sat back at the ranch and sprung into action when it actually materialized.

One can actually imagine all of them high-fiving each other when the first plane hit the Trade Center. All of them, except Bush of course, he had to finish reading My Pet Goat.

The other scenario is that they were actually complicit in the attacks. Although there is a good argument to support this theory, it is too outrageous to think about. Almost as outrageous as Rove’s comments–so maybe we ought to seriously consider it.

  39. I'm With Stupid! Says:

    Rove is toast.

  40. Greenburgh on The Rise Says:

    Rove body Double…

They might be onto something here with this picture comparing Karl Rove to….

  41. victoria Says:

Yes, Karl Rove speaks for Bush. He also thinks for him.

    Rove is garbage.

  42. j redwine Says:

What can one say about Rove that has not been said before.?..He is, in my judgement, a pig-headed liar and distorter of the truth…Does he really think (of course not) that only conservatives have died in Iraq?…got news for you baldy, liberals and progeressives have also died needlessly for your distortions and lies…and you keep on doing it..I still believe Rove and company outed Valerie Plume, an undercover CIA agent because her courageous husband Joe Wilson went to Niger to disprove that Iraq was buying “yellow cake” from them. WRONG! Rove is an original “black prince” who doesn’t know the truth if it hit him square in the face…Lastly, there is a special place reserved for him in Hell for all of his lies, distortions, and character asasinations…will he apoligize? Hell no..will he be forced to resign? Hell no…Bush loves this guy…he is his daddy!! Does anybody really believe what this guy says or encourages anyone else to say??? if so, you need a brain transplant!!!!!!

  43. Rarl Kove Says:

Republicans saw the savagery of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, and wanted to surrender to Japan. Democrats saw the savagery of the Pearl Harbor attack and prepared for war.

And FDR and the Democrats attacked Japan, not another country that had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor.

If George Bush was president in 1941, we’d be speaking Japanese now because he would have started a war with the wrong country.

  44. John the Elder Says:

Bear with me if I am repeating an earlier post, but I just checked out the Huffington Post blog…what an article there by Kristen Breitweiser who lost her husband on 9/11. She nails Rove. Must reading and re-emailing. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/theblog/archive/k……

  45. becky Says:

Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war.

  46. becky Says:

Prepared to send others to war. Yeah, big man, Karl Rove.

  47. bowncr Says:

Rove KNOWS bush is WEAK and losing ground and support rapidly. (polls)

What better way to “re-unite” Americans than to go out and play 9/11 directly using Repugs against Dems in the same sentence.

Americans are beginning to “unite” against bush and his LIES about Iraq, and failed domestic policies, and Rove realizes this.

Let’s just hope they don’t get SO desperate that they UNLEASH the Second 9/11 on America for thier grand finale in destroying any American unity.

  48. Joe Says:

I believe you framed your headline in reverse maybe it’s the headline writers dyslexia breaking out - the correct headline for America should be -
“Does George Bush speak for Karl Rove”

Of course we all know the simple answer “Yes! Daily”.

  49. Nan Says:

I regularly read these blogs and rarely comment but something struck me here.

This is again off topic and admittedly strange but, Karl Rove has an aura (if you will) of a crossdresser or female impersonator. It is similar to crossdressers I have seen and known, and for example J. Edgar Hoovers’. I would not be surprised if it turned out to be true. This observation also goes along with his position in life of being the brains(?)behind a masculine figure (Pres.), much the same as in “Cyrano”, without going into the psychological profile and boring readers.

By aura, I mean overall impression.

  50. Iowadem Says:

Karl Rove’s statements enraged me. How DARE he paint half the citizens of this country as imbecilic, irresponsible, and uncaring wimps with unpatriotic motives!?! Because of his position he assumes he has a take on every liberal (Democrat) in this country and can categorize us as however he sees fit. WRONG!
This man serves at the pleasure of the president of this country. It’s not a country belonging to one party or the other, one religion or another, or whatever. It is OUR country and belongs to all of us. Whether we agree or disagree on issues of the day is immaterial. Unfortunately, many forget civility in the midst of debate.

However, if Rove remains in his position without tendering an apology that was demanded by the president, then he DOES speak for the president. In that case the president will have OPENLY declared a war against half of this country’s citizens - i.e., anyone who disagrees with him. What a tragedy that our country with its beautiful tenets has come to this. I await a presidential rebuke of Rove! If it doesn’t come, we’ll certainly know where we stand, won’t we. (As if it weren’t pretty darn clear already).

  51. John the Elder Says:

Nan, where did you every get the idea that GWB was masculine?…remember who is mommy is, she may have produced a masculine child or two, but she quickly e-masculated them which explains why they are the cowards they are.

  52. Nan Says:

I meant the position of Pres., not the man obviously.

  53. the Potato man Says:

I wrote a letter to Bush right after the “election”, suggesting that since he won, and KR completed his mission, Karl didn’t really need to keep an office in the White Housethe taxpayers didn’t really need to keep on paying Rove’s salary. George has never written me back about that one.

  54. slgalt Says:

Start asking “Does Rove speak for you?” Not just Bush, but all Republicans should be asked this question.

Ask over and over, get the press to ask over and over - Does Rove speak for you?

As a liberal I think the Bush administration needs therapy to find out why they all are so crazy.

As a liberal, I wanted Bush to show real leadership and hunt down Bin Laden. A real leader would have stuck to the task and stayed focused rather than wasting time, money, energy and lives on a personal desire.

A real leader would bring all Americans together rather than sending his hatchet man to insult and incite hate for fellow Americans.

Ask these uniters not dividers, “Does Rove speak for you?”

  55. KEVIN SCHMIDT, STERLING VA Says:

Satan says, “Karl Rove speaks for me!”

Dracula says, “Blah! Karl Rove sucks blood for me! Blah!”

Frankenstein says, “Grrrraaaahhh! Karl Rove’s heart beats in me!”

  56. jocee Says:

I am registered as an Independent voter, who usually votes for the best man no matter what his party affiliation. Last election I voted the democratic ticket. George Bush is a liar and a spoiled little white boy who has never been told no. He is a backslidden christian, who has not repented for his fall from grace. He keeps company with liars, cheats and those who wish to use the words inspired by God to use and abuse the American People. I just can’t understand how these red-state, bible carrying christians can continue to believe in this man and his hall of demons. It is their fault that these assholes are in power. And yes, Karl Rove does speak for our President.

  57. paul Says:

America deserves whatever rove gives us, since the majority voted for Bush/Rove (if you believe the election results) Dumbshit nation.

  58. paul Says:

It’s a little late for most americans to oppose bush, since so many of them voted for him in the last election. Dumbshits.

  59. the daily phosdex Says:

If you ask me, Karl Rove is nothing more than Machiavelli reincarnate. And on steroids and amphetamines.

Not to mention taking nuanced remarks to a dangerous new low, especially if the greater desideratum is one of trying to whip up fresh support for a faltering cause, as in the Iraqi RAHOWA, among the likes of such whose patriotic feelings can be easily manipulated “if and when necessary.”

    Kankerdom, for instance.

  60. John the Elder Says:

We are cursed with a President who is not only stupid, but as is clear from statements yesterday (6/24) saying that “we will stay the course in Iraq” no matter what the American people say they want in poll after poll, he is stark, raving mad. He belongs under lock and key where he can’t hurt anyone…Can’t a president be removed when it is clear that he has lost his mind? All we need are medical doctors who will declare him to be so. If Frist could declare from a distant that Ms. Schivo had her senses about her, surely we can find some far more compentent doctors to declare Bush crazy, as well as his whole administration. That may be our only hope for immediate relief before this group of wingnuts destroys what they have not already destroyed.

  61. Skid Says:

I wonder what restraint and therapy Jesus would have suggested? Darn liberal…

  62. Susan Says:

    John the Elder,
During the campaign Bush was given pyschiatric medication for depression. I doubt that means he can be dubbed as crazy but his past drug and alcohol abuse can.
I’m sure there are many in the medical profession that can testify that his brain cells are dying off.

Bushie claims he doesnt drink alcohol but we all know thats a lie too. He was caught on tape drunker than a skunk years after he claimed to be sober..

I’d love to get my hands on his medical records, I’m sure there is a great story there!

  63. Matt Devlin Says:

Conservatives were not the only ones to see the savagery (recall the saturation news coverage of the planes, towers, frantic NY Mets fans et al) and, sure, they were preparing for war, if Mr Rove says so… However, I’m a liberal and I wasn’t looking to prepare indictments or offer therapy/understanding as Mr Rove suggests, I was thinking “shit, who did this?” and when it was clear that it was NOT Hussein I would have re-tacked and headed towards Bin Laden… that’s just me though, I’m a nobody… but I don’t beat up my neighbor to the left because my neighbor to the right is playing loud music… dig?
By the way, where is Osama?

  64. limbiko Says:

I just saw the end of the PBS Frontline special on Karl “I am gay for Bush” Rove. What a loser. This guy is living proof of what happens when a frustrated, pimple-faced 60’s loser (too damn ugly to get laid even at Woodstock) gets angry at the rest of society because he’s a shmuck.

A military hawk (who was too much of a puss to serve), a anti-gay advocate (who hires gay bloggers to ask the president cream-puff questions), and a person who uses organized religion, and the good souls who attend, as his mindless one-issue voters - while his oil monger/energy baron Texas pals rack up record petroleum earnings.

I know I am going to hell (obviously because I am not a white, anglo-saxon, ex-alcoholic) but I will enjoy seeing Rove while I’m there.
