Rumsfeld’s Big Mistake

Rumsfeld’s Big Mistake

Today on Meet the Press, Donald Rumsfeld said it was a big mistake to make predictions about war:

Anyone who tries to estimate the end, the time, the cost or the casualties in a war is making a big mistake.

It would have been nice if he had this attitude before the war. Prior to the invasion Rumsfeld and other top administration officials repeatedly predicted that the war would be quick and inexpensive.

Donald Rumsfeld, 3/7/03:

It could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months.

Vice President Dick Cheney, 3/16/03:

I think it will go relatively quickly, . . . (in) weeks rather than months

New York Times, 2/2/03:

The administration’s top budget official [Mitch Daniels] estimated today that the cost of a war with Iraq could be in the range of $50 billion to $60 billion.

To date, the war has lasted 27 months at a cost of over 200 billion dollars.

And I bet the farm that little ole Timmy Russett just sat there and smiled with that insipit little smile of his, rather than throw Rumsfeld's own words back in his face...What cowards these media talking heads are. But then we all knew that anyway.

Don is at the golf course this afternoon, and nothing else matters.

He's not in Baghdad. There are better places to be. A golf course is one of them.

  3. Susan Says:

Rumsfeld is a big mistake, he just admitted that to himself and the entire world.
Good to see that he understands that he's a failure.
    Thats progress.

The biggest cost of the Iraq fiasco may be yet to come: reinstatement of the draft.

  6. Charles Stanton Says:

Trust me, my loathing for this bunch is second to none.

However, their response would be technically true. The "war", the overthrow of Saddam, was quick and easy and lasted weeks.

A bloody occupation is what we are engaged in today.

  7. Big Al Says:

Look, a 100 billion dollars here, a 100 billion dollars there...pretty soon we are going to be talking about some real money being spent on this Iraq war.

Well I don't care how much it costs, I want my tax cuts! And do something about gas prices, I bought the biggest SUV I could find to show my American patriotism. And see if you can get more of those inner-city kids to enlist. Don't they know we're at war?
