When in Doubt, Roll 9/11 Out

With the American people losing faith in the administration’s handling of the war in Iraq, the White House has fallen back on some Luntz style propaganda: exploiting the September 11th attacks. From today’s presser…

QUESTION: Isn’t the message really more patience? Isn’t that really what the president’s going to be requesting?

MCCLELLAN: Well, I think if you go back to September 11th — remember, on September 11th the threats of the 21st century were brought to our shores. We saw in a very clear way the threats that we face on that day.

And the president said shortly after the attacks of September 11th that this is a long struggle that we’re going to be in, that this is a different kind of war, one which we have never seen before, and we do face a determined and ruthless enemy, an enemy that has no regard for innocent human life.

That’s the nature of the enemy that we’re up against. That’s the nature of the enemy that the president will be talking about in his remarks tomorrow night.

And the president made it clear after September 11th that some will want us to grow complacent and forget about or put the attacks off as a distant memory. But it does require patience and resolve to see this struggle through to the end. We have no option but to defeat the terrorists and the terrorists will be defeated.

Send all Yellow Elephants to IRaq including McClellan, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld. Also send anyone driving a car sporting a metallic ribbon that says “support our troops”

    Send them all to Baghdad.

  2. John the Elder says:

Obviously, the idiots in the “Peoples House” think that the American people are so stupid that they are, at this late date, going to accept that the horrendous loss of life in Iraq, to say nothing of those who have been maimed for life, because they had no choice but to be involved in Bush’s folly, is due to 9/11 is beyond belief.
    Give it up!

  3. Skid says:

Pathetic and insulting as usual. Complete disregard and disconnect with logic and reason.

  4. David B says:

Ah! but we will see Shrub at Fort Bragg, flag in the background, cherring soldiers, all smiles, no protesters, no press hardline summary, Karl Rove pulling the puppet strings, spin and talking points.

He will tell us all is good, we are only having a bad dream, trust in the house of NeoCon, they will delivery.

We will think it’s 9/12 again and half the country will by the same tired baseless lies again.

  5. LeCar says:

Haven’t they had problems with fragging there?

  6. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

1,700 reported dead in Iraq: Real number: 6,210 US kids dead as of January, 2005. In Iraq. Or as a result of Iraq (you see, they don’t count the number who died on their way out of the country, not once they’re off the battlefield). The actual death toll may be north of 7,000, with 40,000 wounded by this point. This was shown on the MCloughlin Group(sp?) just the other day.

Yep. That does it. _That_ makes up for the 3,000 dead US citizens from the attacks on 9/11/01, don’t you think?

Gods! BushCo is throwing bodies at the problem. Worse, he’s getting away with it.

  7. The Revolutionary says:

Good people…when will this ever end???

We are trapped in the quagmire Iraq due to the hubris of one man. We must stop him at all costs!

I’m to the point of calling for another American Revolution against King George and his supporters!

    – Checks and balances! Unfortunately, today the balances are paid for by checks from the king’s cronies on the right.

  8. LeCar says:

Rummy says the insurgency will last 12 years or more. At 7000 per year, that would be close to 100,000 soldiers dead – and how many million iraqis?

And for what? Does any one even know anymore why Bush & Co are using our children as weapons of mass destruction?

  9. norbizness says:

I have a feeling that if you’re playing a drinking game for the President’s speech tomorrow that involves taking a shot when “9/11″ or “September 11th” is mentioned, you’re gonna be mighty wasted.

  10. Skid says:

    JCGofW,

I’m not sure about that figure of 6-7,000 dead. A week or so ago that (or a similar) statement came from an anti-semetic group (can’t remember the anangram) and was debunked. I don’t know where McGloughlin Group got it though.

  11. Skid says:

The current nearly 1,800 dead US soldiers and eight times as many wounded, not to mention INNOCENT Iraqi wounded and dead is bad enough.

  12. Adrift on the Cosmic Sea says:

    Jesus Christ God of WAR,

This rumor that the number of dead soldiers is far greater than reported was thoroughly discussed on Daily Kos, and dismissed. The 1700 number contains those that died in other countries as a result of wounds suffered in Iraq. We all hate the war, but it’s important to remain firmly grounded in the reality-based community. Here is the link to the Daily Kos thread:

  13. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

It might be worthwile looking up the transcript from the McCloughlin Group conversation on the topic. I believe the numbers are from the US military. It was couched in words like “… 1,700 dead on the ground in Iraq, with another 5,000 dead after leaving Iraq…” If I can scrounge up the details (yes, I know they are important), I’ll post them.

The understated numbers have been commented on for months now by the guy who sends in stuff for the “Voice of the Whitehouse” over on TBRnews. But there are better sources.

  14. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

  15. Susan says:

    September 24th,
    The White House steps,
At least one half of a million demonstrators,
    Demanding Impeachment Hearings!

    Be there.

  16. Brian says:

For what it’s worth, the first words out of Scalia’s mouth today when he read his blistering dissent from the bench in the 10 Commandments case were “On September 11th….”

Something about birds of a feather…

  17. SkyWriter says:

    G’Day All:

Nine-eleven, Scotty’s talking point for the day. Mentioning that date to Americans produces just as predictible an outcome as Pavlov ringing the bell for his lab dogs.

This is all about nine-eleven and how it changed the world forever — NOT!!!

The sheeple are being conditioned to think of nine-eleven and experience that overwhelming sadness and restrained rage whenever the stench of this stinkin’ war begins to leave a foul taste in their mouths again and again …

    -Sky

  18. windspike says:

Just wondering how anyone can speak for the victims of Nine Eleven as one voice? These folks were from all over the globe, and no one reminds the W, Rove and Co that there was a possiblity that instead of dividing the globe, we could have extended the unity post 9-11. Instead, we have…what?

  19. Steve J. says:

Why don’t we take this opportunity to ask them “Where’s Osama?”

  20. OpenMinded says:

Geez, all this diversity of opinion is just leaving me dizzy. NOT! You all hate Bush and Co, perhaps with good reason. You see, he didn’t trust you with the truth because he didn’t think you’d realize just how serious the world situation is. Things are serious as the fanatics now have enough money to be dangerous. Iraq isn’t about Iraq, it is about Islam. If Islam is allowed to spread around the world, then get ready to be just another victim of a dictatorship. Yes, even you liberal, can’t do no wrong people are in danger. Just telling the Islamonuts that you love them, understand them and accept them isn’t going to change the fact that they don’t see you as a human being. To them, you are just an infidel worthy of only being their slave. I’m not going to be their slave and I’m glad that George is making it clear that we ain’t going to go down without a fight. I love peace, but I’m not afraid to fight whenever someone tries to take it away from me. However, I do think that we’ve been in Iraq too long. We should just leave and let the fanatics kill each other off. We should destabilize all Islamic governments and then leave and let them fight each other instead of us. I wish there was a better way, but forced sterilization of religious nuts isn’t possible yet….

  21. Litz says:

This is a particularly evil tactic because when liberals point out that the Bushies are capitalizing on 9/11, they retort with: “Liberals want us to forget 9/11! Liberals are soft on terriss!” etc. etc. Sometimes I think Rove’s “therapy and indictments” speech was just setting us up for all this 9/11 crap being shoved down our throats.

  22. Litz says:

If Islam is allowed to spread around the world, then get ready to be just another victim of a dictatorship.

Hmm, someone isn’t quite as OpenMinded as they think they are. I don’t think even your fearless leader George III would agree that Islam is the enemy.

Thank God religious intolerance is not a Liberal moral value.

  23. OpenMinded says:

George knows that the enemy is Islam. He’s just being crafty about how he attacks it. After all, they are dangerous. How do you defeat a huge enemy? One little country at a time…George may be the smartest president we’ve ever had. He’s got the liberals and other enemies thinking that he is stupid so they underestimate him. Crafty…crafty…crafty

  24. Jay says:

    OpenMinded,

You have been convinced that there is another “great evil” that is determined to kill all of us at all costs. Tell me WHY you think that 9/11 happened?

There is/was NO threat that Islam is going to spread across the globe like some sort of plague. It’s a silly notion.

  25. Susan says:

Sounds like OpenMinded is a afraid of the people of Islam…What a sissy.

    BOO!

  26. Samson says:

The use of 9/11 to create support for the war is an easy way to write a blank check for war against anyone who doesn’t fall into compliance with what the administration feels is right. A war on terror is a war that can never end. Terrorism cannot be defeated becasue there will always be people who will use violence to be heard, hence George W.

I dont see anyone here who has become complacent, with the exception of OpenMinded. What do you know about Islam? Sounds like you have been watching too much Fox News. These people are angry about our force-feeding of western culture into their lives. You’d be upset if you were forced to live like they do as well. We are dealing with a “determined and ruthless enemy, an enemy that has no regard for innocent human life” but it is not terrorists, it is Capitalism. How about the nearly 500,000 children that died as a result of our sanctions on Iraq from 1994 to the start of this war and the thousands of others that have paid with their lives and their childrens lives since the war started? Know your enemy!

By the way, I have a support your troops bumper sticker, right next to my impeach Bush Sticker. Please keep in mind that these “kids” are sacrificing their lives to protect what they believe is right. Do not minimize that but also, do all that we can to let them know that what they have been told is a lie and to fight for peace and justice, not to protect a way of life that keeps the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. Ask them who stands to get rich off of this, then you see the truth.

  27. E. Ehle says:

I just wrote NBC News. This morning on the Today Show, Ms. Couric interviewed Ms. Rice. Ms. Rice THREE times mentioned 9/11 in conjunction with the war in Iraq and was not challenged. Time for the media to get it right!!!

  28. Susan says:

    E,
Most of the media does have it right. The only media that is lacking coverage is television media. Who watches that anyway? The only reason I watch it (like thinkprogress) is to capture the lies from Bushco on tape.
The real media is satelite radio, standard radio, the internet and bloggs. These venues provide the truth across America and the truth is being heard.
Bushie is on the ropes and our non-t.v. media has made that possible.
His television appearance tonight will not change a thing as T.V. media is obsolete.

  29. Mugsy says:

Notice *carefully*, McClelan doesn’t just say “September 11th”, he says “AFTER September 11th”, and as we now well know, plans to invade Iraq began WELL BEFORE 9/11.

I wish someone would call these SOB’s on that the next time one of them tries to use 9/11 as justification for ousting Saddam.

  30. OpenMinded says:

Ah Samson, looks like the liberal communist elite have succeeded in brainwashing you. There is nothing wrong with capitalism unless the government succumbs to their bribery. That is what has happened to our country. But as bad as that may be, it still beats living/dying under communism.

Now grasshopper, get your head out of the sand. If you can’t look around the globe and note that every country that borders on an Islamic nation is having problems with the moslims, you’re not looking very hard. Don’t be misled by the commies into thinking that they are causing problems as a reaction to capitalism, they are causing problems because their religion refuses to recognize other people’s right to exist. Same with Judaism. And, I do know a lot about Islam, enough to make me understand what the real issues are.

If we’d go back to actually following the constitution, the federal government would have very limited powers and could not lead us into “nation building” as we are attempting to do in Iraq. But, no, the Democrats under the traitor Roosevelt circumvented the constitution and now we have this mess to deal with. The silly part is that the liberals think that the solution to excessive government is more excessive government….I guess the beatings will continue until moral improves..eh?

  31. OpenMinded says:

Also, I think that 9/11 was an inside job. Our stategists see that Islam succeeds because people don’t recognize the danger until it is too late. 9/11 was a wakeup call dealt to us by our own government. Wiil it have been worth it? Only if it is exposed and the citizens react by actually paying attention to politics again and making sure that such ruthless people only occupy prison cells. BTW, I think that Islam will win…the thousand years of the anti-christ has to happen by biblical prophecy…

  32. t0m says:

That’s quite a story, OpenMinded. Looks like you win the debate. Nobody can argue with a narrow interpretation of Revelations.

  33. Justin says:

Oh those Muslims. Worshipping the same God as the Christians (and the Jews!). What on earth are they thinking… they MUST be evil! I have a problem with religious fanaticism of all stripes but none has been as virulent as Christian fundamentalism… So Open look at the enemy where they truely stand. In the mirror.

  34. OpenMinded says:

Ah, just as you all were about to convince me that you were the party of inclusion. All religions except christianity eh?

  35. Justin says:

As a progressive Roman Catholic. You’re damn right when I say I don’t want fanatics hanging around.

  36. Jed says:

But the key question is: Will he wear that handsome flight suit of his?

    ooooooh, I hope so!

  37. Randy says:

To those who believe the Downing Street memo contains damming evidence that Bush planned the Iraq war in advance, forget about it. The memo contains no direct quotes which is why the media has pretty much left this story alone. The liberal media is this country is so thirsty for anything that would have nailed Bush that they would have picked up on this right away. Why would Bush have planned to attack Iraq anyway if he didn’t have to. Everyone knew this was going to be an unpopular war if he started it. Why doesn’t anyone remember all of the chances Saddam was given by the U.N.? I think that if he had given in sooner to the inspectors, we may have avoided war. Why didn’t Saddam? Because he was moving his weapons of mass destruction to Syria. Three hundred Kurds paid the price and were gassed under his reign and yet liberals have the audacity to claim no weapons, no weapons. Liberals used to stand for freedom and human rights. What happened?

  38. Xool says:

Do us all a favor, and please don’t refer to yourself as “OpenMinded” and then spew hatred towards an entire group of people based on their religion. Muslims are not the problem. Religious fundamentalism is, on all sides. If you’re frothing at the mouth and thumping the Bible, the Torah, or the Quran, you’re still a rabid dog.

  39. OpenMinded says:

Sorry, but you and I are all part of this planet and we have to make choices. We can’t eliminate religion, we just have to deal with it. It appears to me that if I have to chose between living in a secular society, albeit repleat with much Christian influence, verses living in a totalitarian theoracracy, I’d chose the secular. It was interesting to note how people assumed that I am a Christian because I mentioned one of their prophecies..anti-christ..etc..Well, I’m not a Christian, just another person affected by the existence of their religion. I don’t hate people because of their religion, I hate them because they are not open minded. I can refer to myself as open minded…can you?

  40. cynical ex-hippie says:

What you said was it has to happen because it is prophecy. If your strategy is to convince people that you are a nut, and then criticize people for calling you a nut, then congratulations you could be President!

And we still stand for freedom and human rights. It is this administration which has moved on to other things.

Remember, the last time Rumsfeld and Amnesty International were in disagreement, it was over the gassing of 5,000 civilians. And Amnesty was right. So if you were picking stocks, where’s the smart money in Gitmo?

  41. Sara says:

Isn’t it interesting that even in what begins as a clear discussion of why it’s wrong to bring 9/11 into it, one asshole manages to derail the entire discussion for many paragraphs into an unwinnable argument about comparitive religion? Which was probably his purpose. I personally feel that any public displays of religion are wrong as they always offend someone – these things should be kept between you and your god. Or, in the spirit of democracy, we will now need to give equal room to the 10 commandments, statues of Beelzebub, your many gods from around the world – can you see the Christians in Texas or Kansas allowing that on their courthouse walls? Proving that the Framers were right to try and separate Church and State. Problem is they didn’t separate them enough! Let’s get back to the real problem here – ousting the gangsters in the White House.
