“I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straight forward and trustworthy.” — President Bush, on his friend Russian President Vladmir Putin
VERSUS
“Putin Pockets Pats Owner’s Super Bowl Ring – Following a meeting of American business executives and Putin at Konstantinovsky Palace near St. Petersburg on Saturday, [New England Patriot's owner Robert] Kraft showed the [diamond-encrusted Super Bowl] ring to Putin — who tried it on, put it in his pocket and left, said Russian news reports.” — AP, 6/29/05
UPDATE: Kraft says ring was a gift.
Being trustworthy does not mean one cannot accept a nice gift when it is tendered. Look for the Moscow Pats to join the NFL sometime around 2007.

June 29th, 2005 at 12:55 pmAren’t there any other white girls missing?
Being a Patriots fan, I find this to be an interesting story. However until we know whether it was a gift, a misunderstanding or something else, implying that Putin is some kind of a thief is a bit premature wouldn’t you say? BTW, Robert Kraft is a top-notch human being not to mention an excellent businessman and owner. Maybe he should be considering a run for office. Any office.
June 29th, 2005 at 12:56 pmHA! Thanks for giving me today’s laugh.
June 29th, 2005 at 12:57 pmYou seem to be jumping the gun on this one. But then again somehow it’s worthy of the CNN front page.
SHARK ATTACK.
June 29th, 2005 at 12:58 pmI’m a huge pats fan, too – totally missed this story this morning. who knows – yeah, yeah, may turn out to be a misunderstanding, but the fact that they don’t know right now cracks me up.
June 29th, 2005 at 1:00 pmCan you picture Krafty Bob scratching his head and trying to convince the interpreter that he would like his jewelry back now :)
June 29th, 2005 at 1:01 pmWay to go, AP! Nevermind about the war or anything – keep exploring the hard-hitting rumors! Thanks for pointing this out – too funny.
June 29th, 2005 at 1:01 pmFrickin’ hysterical.
June 29th, 2005 at 1:02 pmI’m thinking it was a gift, but even if not, I think Kraft can absorb to $15K in the name of international relations. Besides, it’s good to know that the man that controls the Russian Army is a Pats fan ;)
June 29th, 2005 at 1:07 pmI’ll take Robert Kraft for a president any day over Georgie boy.
He at least knows where the goal posts are located.
As for the loss of the Ring, that’s the way it goes moving west. As they say in the Russian Army, “Toughsky shitsky.”
Oh well. I’d rather lose a Super Bowl ring that I have earned than a war that has been nothing but losing and nobody wants.
June 29th, 2005 at 1:25 pmAre you sure this isn’t an “Eats, Shoots and Leaves” item?
June 29th, 2005 at 1:51 pmHrm. Between this and the missing Red Sox World Series-winning baseball, I think Beantown has itself a new curse: this time, we win championships but we get collectibles stolen after the fact.
Weird.
June 29th, 2005 at 2:00 pmSuper Bowl rings are usually made, in how you say? “pimp” style. Russians have gaudy taste. Figures Putin would snag it.
June 29th, 2005 at 2:04 pmLoving it.
June 29th, 2005 at 2:05 pmIsn’t that what he did with Yukos?
June 29th, 2005 at 2:14 pmWhat in the world would Mr. Bush know about being straight forward and trustworthY?
June 29th, 2005 at 2:51 pmThus the name. He was caught Put’in it in his pocket.
June 29th, 2005 at 2:59 pmThere’s one up for sale now on eBay, being offered by a seller named “rootin-tootin-pootin.”
June 29th, 2005 at 4:35 pmRing was a gift: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8402895/
I dont like Bush as much as the next guy here, but we dont need to invent things to smack him down. This kind of stuff hurts our cause with the fence-sitters.
now, onward….
June 29th, 2005 at 6:24 pmPutin took the ring. The official line from the Patriots (ironic, eh?) sounds like face-saving to me. Hell, even if the ring were worth $100,000 it would be chump-change to Kraft. Too funny.
June 29th, 2005 at 9:31 pmWhy? I do not know.
June 29th, 2005 at 9:32 pmMike’s right, if you follow the link you provided Kraft says: “At that point, I decided to give him the ring as a symbol of the respect and admiration that I have for the Russian people and the leadership of President Putin,â€?.
Growing up in Western Massachusetts and being a Pats fan I respect Robert Kraft, but I wholeheartedly disagree with his assesment of President Putin, and wish he’d given the ring to him for another reason. There have been too many instances since Putin’s been in office that remind me of how the Soviet Union used to operate.
I can think of many people who are much more deserving of such a gift.
June 29th, 2005 at 9:45 pmIf Kraft wants to do biz in Russia, he should probably get used to it.
