Echoing Cheney, National Security Advisor Says Taliban Making Its “Last Stand”

As insurgent violence spiked in Iraq, Vice President Dick Cheney was widely criticized for saying the insurgency in Iraq was in its “last throes.”

Now, as Taliban violence spikes in Afghanistan, National Security advisor Stephen Hadley says the Taliban is making “one last stand.” Here’s Hadley on PBS NewsHour last night:

[W]hat we know and what we believe is that the Taliban forces in Afghanistan were really set back by the presidential election that occurred and are trying to regroup and trying to stay relevant and trying to derail the elections that are now scheduled for September. So, regrettably, we’re going to probably see continuation of violence as they try and make one last stand to try and derail the progress of democracy there.

Well, it all depends on your definiton of the term “last stand”…

  2. Russ Ruszkowski says:

Is this like Rummy’s last throes insurgency estimate, “Insurgencies tend to go on five, six, eight, 10, 12 years.”

So, the Taliban might live-on for between five and twelve years, or more – they don’t really ahve a clue, do they?

  3. Skid says:

Presidential elections!?! Oh no, there goes corruption and terrorism! Karzai wold be better identified as an honorary mayor of Kabul. Seems like more smoke being blown up the wahzoo.

  4. Andros says:

You liberals have a negative attitude! Of course, we are winning. If we weren’t, the conflict would be escalating thus we’d need more troops over there… but Bush said his generals on the field say they can manage just fine! Geesh. If we weren’t winning we’d be talking about being kicked out, and this is not the case! WHy, we can stay there, 10,15, 25 or as many years as we want! Get a clue. Watch Fox, the world is a nicer place there.

  5. Ron says:

Winning or losing, it all pays.

Clueless? Maybe. ‘Witless’ is the word.

I remember reading a story about the Soviet invasion and subsequent retreat of the the Russian Army from Afghanistan. A Russian colonel, along with Soviet troops, made it to a bridge spanning a river in Afghanistan back into Soviet territory. An Afghani woman was sitting close by the bridge and with one swift move she drove a butcher knife into the colonel. He thought he was back in the USSR. He found out differently.

The US forces and military brass had best start their retreat at this time. There really is no other choice.

The Soviets learned the hard way, and so is the US.

  6. cynical ex-hippie says:

Yes, like pouring water on the wicked witch of the west, a presidential election makes the Taliban just dissappear… into Pakistan where they prepare for their next attack.

  7. truth4achange says:

And by the same twisted logic that the administration has used in the past, the predicted increase in violence will be a sign of our SUCCESS – just one more piece of hard evidence that we’re winning!

Afghanistan? Did somebody mention Afghanistan? Isn’t that old news now that we’re making progress in Iraq.

  9. Bill says:

Incidentally, in the 1930’s Stalin made the point that the class stuggle would intensify as the the Party moved closer to victory.

  10. Darth Filibustrous says:

REUTERS : BIN LADEN IN PRIME TIME APPEARANCE

Fort Bragg, June 28 2005 : Americans saw Bin Laden on stage in Ft. Bragg during the President’s major speech on Iraq. The president after a few opening remarks turned the floor over to the terrorist leader. Bin Laden, grabbing a mike went on to say “This Third World War … is raging in Iraq. The whole world is watching this war. It will end in victory and glory or misery and humiliation.

Listeners wondered whether quoting Bin Laden as a driver of U.S. policy is tantamount to yielding the future of the world to men like Bin Laden, but the president quickly said, “The only way our enemies can succeed is if we forget the lessons of September 11 … if we abandon the Iraqi people to men like Zarqawi … and if we yield the future of the Middle East to men like Bin Laden.

Later backstage, Bin Laden told reporters that he thanks Bush for the first prime time opportunity since two days before the 2004 US elections. Before reporters could ask too many questions, Porter Goss shuffled him away into a limo waiting outside.

How could the Taliban make its last stand when it no longer exists?

President’s Remarks in “Focus on Education with President Bush” Event

In a different kind of war, we had to recognize that we’re not facing a nation; we’re facing a group of people who have adopted an ideology of hatred and love to find places where they can hide. They’re like parasites. They kind of leech on to a host and hope the host weakens over time so they can eventually become the host. That’s why I said to the Taliban in Afghanistan: Get rid of al Qaeda; see, you’re harboring al Qaeda. Remember this is a place where they trained — al Qaeda trained thousands of people in Afghanistan. And the Taliban, I guess, just didn’t believe me. And as a result of the United States military, Taliban no longer is in existence.

  12. Ryan Neat says:

Anytime this administration says ‘last’ anything, you know it’s the first. They’re so black is white, all you have to do is reverse read everything they pronounce and you suddenly know what’s actually happening.

  13. Patrick says:

I think we’re starting to see the general public is catching on to these lying sons of bitches. These scoundrels are finding out they can’t use 9/11 forever and their bold lies are getting more obvious.
Now,if only the media would actually report it like it is.

  14. Big Al says:

The use of the term “one last stand” is like the performers doing their “farewell tour”. Buffalo Bill Cody did a “farewell tour” and it was so successful he kept doing “farewell tours” for the next 40 years. At the rate the conflicts are going in Iraq and Afghanistan, the insurgents and the Taliban may be in their “last throes” and putting up their “last stand” for the next 40 years.

  15. Nikki Kephart says:

If I can lift the post from Count Asterisk:

[In a different kind of war, we had to recognize that we’re not facing a nation; we’re facing a group of people who have adopted an ideology of hatred and love to find places where they can hide. They’re like parasites. They kind of leech on to a host and hope the host weakens over time so they can eventually become the host.]

Does this sound familiar? Perhaps an excellent definition of the far right-wing Republican cabal? Only the host is the American government — which is, after all, OF THE PEOPLE.
    THANK YOU MR. PRESIDENT!
    Signed: The People

[That’s why I said to the Taliban in Afghanistan: Get rid of al Qaeda; see, you’re harboring al Qaeda. Remember this is a place where they trained — al Qaeda trained thousands of people in Afghanistan.]

For the moment let’s put aside the question of whether or not they were also in Iraq. But they sure are now. And how happy they must be!
Instead of those hidden, artificial training camps, they have the run of Iraq. And America provided them with the latest in equipment, more ammunition and explosives than they could have dreamed of and a real environment to train in. How much better could it get? But wait — America is even throwing in live targets and some top of the line opposition! When the “class of ‘05″ graduates (which will be long before the Iraqi security forces we’re training) they will be able to send their alumni world wide. And they’ll have plenty of extra money to spend.

    AMERICA — YOU ROCK!
    Signed: Al Qaeda

[And the Taliban, I guess, just didn’t believe me. And as a result of the United States military, Taliban no longer is in existence.]

Unfortunately it still exists. So does the poverty, unemployment and hunger in Afghanistan. But courtesy of America, you also have more corruption, more destruction of property and more carpet baggers — and even fewer male breadwinners in a country where most women aren’t educated and can’t earn a living. And just in case Taliban is thinking about coming back, we’ll arrest anybody that looks suspicious. If they’re innocent, we let them go — sooner or later. If they’re lucky, they’ll still be able to walk!

    THANK YOU FOR OUR FREEDOM!
    Signed: theremainingAfghanpeople
PS: Great job! Here’s your helmet!
Don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out!
