TownHall.com mass-mailed their readers this morning, urging them to celebrate July 4th by donating to a cause they said would “show our troops that you appreciate their work to promote freedom and democracy” and that you “value their outstanding service to our country.”
You’ll never guess the noble cause that TownHall is supporting. It isn’t helping our soldiers pay for armor and supplies. It’s not sending troops in Iraq spare clothing or phone cards or even toys for them to hand out. No, TownHall.com is raising $25,000 for the vital cause of mailing U.S. forces thousands of copies of Confronting Iraq, a deceptive film produced by the right-wing watchdog group Accuracy in Media.
According to its website, Confronting Iraq apparently shows that the Iraq war was “just and necessary,” part of the larger war “against the unrelenting forces of radical Islam” (wasn’t Saddam a committed secularist?), and that Iraq had “ongoing relations with Osama bin Laden’s terrorist organization, al Qaeda, among others.” It features upstanding luminaries like Bernie Kerik, who loved Iraq so much he decided to leave 9 months early.
And if those facts sound specious, it’s hardly surprising: the film’s director, Roger Aronoff, is an acclaimed “investigative journalist” whose previous films include TWA Flight 800: The Search for the Truth, a conspiracy epic that explains how the 1996 flight was actually shot from the air by Muslim terrorists, a fact hidden by President Clinton to ensure his re-election (and other such gems).
Gee, and all you liberals wonder why people call you unpatriotic…
I suppose we should be sending the troops some liberal pap which will demoralize them right? How dare people send them a film which tells them that what they are doing is worthwhile?
You folks are really a parody of yourselves.
June 30th, 2005 at 7:04 pmQuite right, we need to reinforce their will to fight. I mean, if the soldiers themselves don’t know why we’re fighting, it’s up to all of us to give them the story, no matter how fictitious it is.
June 30th, 2005 at 7:26 pmTalk about parodies, wave a flag over any scheme (like sending propaganda to the troops instead of what they really need) and wingnuts like “Joe” will toss their wallets in the air.
Of course the only purpose is for Townhall to rake in the big bucks, but hey, it gives the mighty righties another chance to make an empty gesture and still call themselves patriotic.
Hey Joe, I’ll donate if you will bring the videos over yourself. We could use one less heavily armed, lard ass, nose picking yahoo, and they could use one more.
June 30th, 2005 at 7:34 pmGee, and all you conservatives wonder why people call you wingnuts…
I suppose we should be sending the troops some conservative pap which will completley conflict with what is actually happening to them, right? How dare people send them a film which tells them that day is night and up is down.
You folks are really a parody of yourselves.
And by the way, I’m sure the troops would rather have body armor and supplies to keep them alive rather than any number of movies to “reassure” them.
June 30th, 2005 at 7:40 pmPerhaps some highly paid Blackwater USA contractor could deliver the video to troops personally.
June 30th, 2005 at 7:46 pmRandi Rhodes is a skank.
June 30th, 2005 at 9:02 pmWhen Republicans retire do they go to the Social Security Administration and collect the social security checks for their benefit, or do they give the money back to the government and say they really shouldn’t take money that they never wanted a social security system in the first place?
I can tell you from personal experience that Republicans do collect social security and try to get as much of the benefits as they possibly can. Isn’t that a bit hypocritical or not?
They diss the system, but milk it dry, too. They have no shame when it comes to collecting any money from anybody.
You would think that they would be humble enough to look themselves in the mirror and wonder where they came from.
But, they don’t. They think they have made themselves out of thin air and deserve their riches.
Well, maybe it isn’t fair to paint them with such a broad brush, but when jokers like Ken Lay are walking around free as a bird, it makes one wonder.
They’ll dupe the troops in Iraq all day long, too. Might as well let women die in Iraq instead of a Congressman’s son, too. Anything that pays.
I am appalled and disgusted with the modern day galoot called a ‘Republican.’ They ain’t what they portray themselves to be. Knaves and fools and cowards, all of them, they are.
There is nothing new under the nearest star.
June 30th, 2005 at 10:21 pmMaybe those DVDs can be used to reinforce the armor on a Hummer.
June 30th, 2005 at 10:25 pmIf you’re look for ways to really support the troops, try these “Support the Troops” Resources.
June 30th, 2005 at 10:29 pmTwo words:
Frank Burns.
June 30th, 2005 at 11:00 pmP O’Neill: exactly what I was thinking. Our troops, protected by the repulsive power of right-wing bullshit.
July 1st, 2005 at 8:51 amNo matter which side of the fence you’re on, using words like “unpatriotic” and “wingnut” is not going to pursuade anyone of the validity of your argument.
July 1st, 2005 at 8:52 amJoe (comment # 1):
Boy do you know how to miss the point. The comparison was between sending the troops a propaganda rag and sending the troops something that might save their lives. Pretty unpatriotic to want to help save their lives, huh?
July 1st, 2005 at 8:56 amSuch a “patriotic campaign” is clearly up there with the then-Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact’s armed forces using so-called “political officers” among the ranks for the sake of mandatory “political instruction.”
That, and the potential for taking fanaticism to a dangerous new low @ the expense of what may best be described as “Kankerdom”–poor, undereducated and easily-influenced Angry White Men Eating Krispy Kreme Donuts (with apologies to Lorna Landvik there).
Not to mention being in the same league as Armed Forces Radio including the first hour of Rush Limbaugh among its programmes….
July 1st, 2005 at 9:31 amDon’t many of the troops have internet access? I would think the propaganda being sent to them will be recognized for what it is. They know what is really happening – even the Stars and Stripes published a piece about the DSM. How demoralizing for them for them to have a C-I-C who talks out of both sides of his mouth, and the brainwashed bunch who are sending this trash to them. Maybe it should be thrown in the toilet where it belongs instead Those who staunchly believe the lies will continue to do so. I doubt this “information” will change any minds.
July 1st, 2005 at 10:44 amPaul, recent events have proven that repeated use of terms like “wingnut” and “unpatriotic” will win a presidential election.
July 1st, 2005 at 11:33 amRight on ce-hippie, these SOB’s don’t play by the rules. It cracks me up that people are still trying to keep this battle civil. The Republicans lie, cheat, steal and kill…and while stooping to their level may not keep your pants clean, at least it lets them know that they have a fight on their hands and we want to win it as much as they do. This is all out war and while I believe that there are people that can be persuaded, most of the “wingnuts” get what they have coming.
July 1st, 2005 at 12:01 pmThe troops are smart enough to know what’s going on. Maybe the Young Republicans can volunteer to deliver the tapes to the front lines. You know, if they’re not too busy drinking beer, taunting liberals, driving their SUVs to business school, and eating vast amounts of meat.
BTW, wasn’t meat rationed in WWII?
July 1st, 2005 at 12:34 pmNext they will be asking for volunteers to help with the brainwashing, sorry indoctrination, I mean re-education of our troops. Of course these rabid fanatics, whoops political officers, dang… patriotic citizens performing their civic duty will go about in groups of three.
One who can read, one who can write and one to keep an eye on the two intellectuals.
As for the complaints about “liberals” being “unpatriotic”… I would have thought that given the obvious liberal bias of both the declaration of independence and the bill of rights that not being liberal would be the less patriotic choice. Even then, if I have to be either a patriot or a liberal I would choose liberal every time.
When I was at school I came across a poem by Roger McGough called “Why Patriots are a bit nuts in the head.” It’s available online at http://www.merseyworld.com/faith/html_file/warpoetry6.html
Enjoy,
Z.
July 1st, 2005 at 12:42 pmHere’s today’s “Screw with the Right-Wingnuts” activity of the day…
Call Accuracy in Media, Inc., the outfit behind this push to send the crap video to our troops, at 202-364-4401. Ask if this is the number you call to make your donation to send that video to the troops in Iraq. When they say yes, tell them that you’d be happy to donate $50 to send 10 copies of “Farenheit 9/11″ to the troops, and ask if they want that in cash or if a check is ok. Or even better, ask them for the address of several of our troops, so that you can send them all copies of Farenheit 9/11 — after all, it’s the TRUTH that they want to get out there, right?
See how quickly you can make the AIM person’s head explode over the phone. Not as much fun as Xbox, I suppose, but a bit easier on the hands…
July 1st, 2005 at 1:23 pmIt is heartening to know that liberalism is alive and well and kicking – and that thinking people are not falling for the conservative slop that has been around rotting big holes in our rights as true freedom lovers in this society. I saw a bumper sticker that said “keep ignoring your rights and they will go away”. That seems truer than ever now that our bill of rights is being systematically gutted and amended out of existence.
July 1st, 2005 at 3:22 pmI hope that this lesson that has been in the works since WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and now Iraq – will not be lost on us and our future generations. It was lost on us because (slow learners that we are), we fell for it once again. War is war, no matter how you paint it – it is the scourge of humanity. We need a new plan for the 21st century that does not entail regression to agression.
I saw a bumper sticker that read “it is impossible to simultaneously prevent and plan for war”. Albert Einstein.
July 1st, 2005 at 11:52 pmSnicker, snicker. Saddam a committed secularist is equivalent to saying Chomsky is a neocon. Only one without any knowledge of Iraq could make this assumption, similar to Chomsky’s line in Hegemony, referencing Saddam and ibn Laden “in fact, his bitter enemy.” Face the fact the lies are on both sides of the aisles…
July 2nd, 2005 at 9:34 amYou know I’ve seen alot of fundraisers for things that matter before, armor plating for hummers, ceramic plates for bulletproof vests and the like but I’ve never seen a right wing circle jerk like this before… What the hell do people think the soldiers are going to do with a dvd about “confronting Iraq”.
Lemme tell you something, those troops “confront” Iraq every goddam day in ways that douches like this film’s maker couldn’t even begin to imagine. If you want to help a soldier, give him what he/she needs to get the job done and stay alive, not something that will make them feel better about what they’re doing. Most of the time in a real life or death situation you don’t have the luxury of time to “feel” anything anyway, that hardship doesen’t come until after, and requires deep introspection, not a hastily thrown together “documentary” about the war they live every day.
July 2nd, 2005 at 12:37 pmwe need to be talking to milbloggers. i stopped by some of their sites, and was appalled to see nothing but right wingers shoving the new trinity — God, Bush, and Hannity — down their throats in the comments. we need to tell them that we support them, we want them safe, and we want them home, and what we’re doing to achieve that.
July 5th, 2005 at 6:39 pmLoved the comment, “war is a scourge…let’s not regress to aggression”. You must be one rare specimen – since human nature hasn’t changed all that much in 5000 years. As for the scourges of war – I hope so!! This war with “the barbarians” is blamed on the (pick one)…(a.) vicious capitalism of the US. (b.) imperialism of the US. (c.) the decadence of the US. (d.) heavy population of infidels in the US. I’m glad I don’t have wimpy liberals watching my back. Just grateful the colonies were not full to the brim with pacifists wonks or Tories at the time our Founders wrote the Declaration of Independence. Oh that’s right, they went to Canada. I hate crumpets!
