Day 6: WH Press Corps Silent on Rove

By Judd Legum on Jul 8th, 2005 at 1:32 pm

Day 6: WH Press Corps Silent on Rove

The White House just released the transcript of today’s Gaggle.

For the fourth straight time since his lawyer admitted that Rove was one of Matt Cooper’s sources, no member of the White House press corps asked a question about Rove’s role. (And there are plenty of questions to ask.)

A major figure in the White House is deeply entangled in a major scandal. Why is the White House press corps ignoring the story?

  1. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

Is the list of media in attendance available? Perhaps we should contact them and ask.

Treason, in former times, was dealt with harshly. Its important to find out why thing are different now.

  2. Zookeeper says:

WAKE UP White House Press Corp!!! What’s wrong with you? You are there to ask questions. The people have the right to know — remember?

  3. Jon says:

That’s why you need to play Karl Rove Whack-a-Mole, the contest that lets you be Karl Rove’s judge and jury.

The contest is simple. You get to sentence Karl Rove for his crimes; the best and most fitting punishment wins the contest. The winner gets a 1 GB iPod Shuffle.

For more details and to enter, see:

    “The Karl Rove Whack-a-Mole Contest.”

  4. Skid says:

Its biz as usual. Great opportunity to regurgitate the war on terrah spiel and Homeland Security measures. Is it CMYK Orange or RGB Orange now anyway? Pantone? Lost track.

  5. Skid says:

I played! Left an example too. Do you think Judy and Lil’Kim (not Jong Il) are/will be cell mates?

  6. Peter says:

The reason no media is there is no ’sex’ involved.

  7. Skid says:

    No sex so far…

  8. LeCar says:

Why do you even ask why?

They are not journalists, they are propagandists.

  9. LeCar says:

Bill Moyers explained this very clearly

If the administration doesn’t talk about it, it’s not news. The administration is not talking about Karl Rove’s treasonous acts so it’s not news.

    Get it. ‘nough said.

  10. Skid says:

We need Big Bad Bill more so now than ever! I may not like EVERYTHING he says, but he is HONEST!

  11. luke says:

I don’t know if this has already been posted on ThinkProgress, but there is an interesting article on this subject available at: http://www.tompaine.com/articles/20050707/novak_squealed.php

  12. LeCar says:

I think a logical followup to the David Corn article cited by Luke – is why has Miller gone to jail, while Cooper and Novak have not. The answer, in line with Corn’s argument, is that her source has not given her permission and she feels the need to protect that source. So her source is not the same as Cooper’s and Novak’s.

It has long been rumored that Miller is CIA or with some intelligence group within the pentagon. It was rumored, during the invasion of Iraq, that her activities when she was embedded went far beyond reporting. She was identified as actually calling the shots at certain points so that some military within her group wondered who she really was.

This rumor would dovetail with the notion that her source is someone other than Karl Rove. That her source is someone actually in intelligence. The rumor is that Fitzgerald is pursuing a crime far more serious than just revealing the identity of a CIA covert operative.

    Just some ruminations.

  13. Edmond Dantes says:

Does anyone have their email addresses??? Let’s get on them about doing their job! The time is now! If this were James Carvel or some other democratic strategist, the righties would be all over this.

  14. mike t says:

“The reason no media is there is no ’sex’ involved”

I dunno about that. They had a gay male prostitute running around in this WH, and that barely cracked the news. I don’t think lack of sex has much to do with it.

  15. LeCar says:

    Dantes
Come on. Wake up. Their job is to spread propaganda and ask softball questions. They are doing ‘their’ job. Don’t you get it yet. How many terrorist attacks is it going to take before people start waking up to the true nature of the game being played here.

Why keep asking people to do what they have no intention of doing, don’t even know how to do, and don’t have the guts to do.

  16. jeb says:

Hands off until the prosecutor speaks? Quite odd for the media, I agree.

  17. Keith says:

I believe they are ignoring this story for the same reason any anti-bush admin. news is suppressed. Their employers do not want the questions asked or story covered.

  18. e_five says:

    No sex? What about Gannon/Guckert?

  19. jm says:

Judd, you obviously haven’t gotten your copy of the script.

  20. Skid says:

Notice Judy’s smile in the back seat of the car as they drove off?

  21. thrashbluegrass says:

Christ, people, you’re getting riled up over why this isn’t hitting the news the way that the Starr investigations were, without realizing the two important facts that fed the Clinton “scandals”:

    1) Starr’s team regularly fed information concerning the investigation to reporters; new data every week, something new to write about, so numerous reporters got “scoops,” which they gladly ran.

    2) The Republicans in Congress pressed and pressed and pressed the issue. Where are the Congressional Dems demanding that the President step down “for the good of the country” ?

  22. LeCar says:

    Where is Judy incarcerated?

  23. Easy E says:

Right on LeCar – - – “They are not journalists, they are propagandists”.

  24. LeCar says:

Here’s a prescient article on Judy from way back in Aug 2003

    http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn08182003.html

If she is CIA, it indicates that the Plame outing was more than just political dirty tricks from Bushies – it was one faction within the intelligence community that was promoting the war outing another faction of the community that was against the war.

  25. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

“Where are the Congressional Dems demanding that the President step down “for the good of the countryâ€? ?”

Wow. Now THERE’s a good idea. I like it.

But if the Dems wait long enough, King George will simply fall down… off his bike. No stepping required. Maybe next time he’ll hit the ground hard enough to stop breathing. ;-)

  26. aqualung says:

Problem is, the GOP (Grand Ol’ Prevaricators) controls congress, and outright criminal activity on the part of a Republican administration will be ignored, excused, rationalized away. The Dems have no subpoena power, cannot launch an investigation, cannot do shit. So the key goal is to wrest the Senate and House from the grip of these sleezeballs and hold this government accountable. Until that happens, what Rove did, what this cabal did to go to war, torture detainees, etc., etc., will not matter.

  27. George E. Lowe says:

Hi, Why dare ask THE QUESTION about ROVE & then be shunned by WH? Besides would the WH press Corps’ Masters in Corporate America want to be saddled with the responsibility for being the horse shoe nail that brings the Bush Administration down? It’s bad enough that those “traitors” @ TIME broke ranks with the WH PROTECTORS OF THE PRESIDENT & turned over M.Cooper’s notes/emails. Suppose the WH Press Corp finds out that Judith Miller was: in deep cover for the CIA?/ On The WH payroll?/Actively working for Rumsfeld or Feith/Chalabi on promoting The “WMD HOAX” of Wolfowitz’s Caba. Or discover that there is a WH-NYT Understanding of support for the WMD HOAX by the NYT: in order to introduce US troops into the heart of the Mid-East to protect Israel, per Perle/Wolfowitz’s Grand Strategy of the 1990s. If creating/spreading the WMD HOAX by Miller/NYT’s editors/publisher–and thus giving Bush his causa belli for his Preventive/Preemptive War of 19 March 2003– was “THE SOMETHING” for the WH. THEN, “THE SOMETHING” the NYT received was the ACTUAL introduction of US tanks/troopers into the very heart of Western Asia. The real irony here is that to many military/intel strategists in Israel, the greatest danger to Israel’s future has always been the IRANIAN NUCLEAR WEAPONS & THE IRAN BALLISTIC MISSILE DELIVERY SYSTEMS. And there’s another irony here: BUSH’s attacking IRAQ rather than IRAN has accelerated the Iranian development of nuclear weapon & has thus made Israel LESS, NOT MORE secure. It’s a near perfect example of the working out of the Law of Unexpected Consequences. At the core of this spreading scandal of PALMGATE are NUCLEAR WEAPONS & The Bush Administration’s blatant use of the SMOKING GUN=”MUSHROOM CLOUD OVER MANHATTAN” via a TERRORIST NUCLEAR PEARL HARBOR. And at the heart of it also are things nuclear: AMBASSADOR WILSON/VALERIE PALME/BUSH’s SOU on NIGER yellow cake for Saddam Hussein’s NUKES/VEEP’s wild nuclear weapon warnings/Bolton’s nuclear ravings. Thus the WH had to SPIKE/DISCREDIT Wilson lest the full WMD HOAX unravel. That’s why Rove’s ROLE–whatever it was + Libby’s are so important. The Bush Presidency is at risk over this “huge ” story struggling to be born. If not the MSM, then the BLOGOSPHERE must save our threatened secular Democratic Constitutional Republic–before “THEY” come for us. Worried in Nova Scotia, George E. Lowe

  28. Harry Houck says:

How long has it been since the “president” admitted that someone in the White House outed Plame? I don’t really care WHO did it, Bush should be responsible. He did not respond, even though he mouthed some BS about getting to the bottom of this. Why are the press and public splitting hairs about which Bush toadie did this? Blame Bush! Find out what the outing did to this country. Stay on the WMD lies. This is a diversion.

  29. Steve J. says:

    LECAR –

There’s also Miller’s ties to the neo-cons. She wrote a book with Laurie Mylroie and was a speaker for Benador Associates.

  30. Bob says:

  31. Swinging Katdaddy says:

Any brave blogger(s)willing to risk it all?? This revolution obviously will not be televised by the MSM. Bloggers, internet journalists, and gonzo flameouts are the only way to out this administration. Woodward, Bernstein and Mark Felt all took huge risks to bring down the Nixon greedheads and fixers. Now we need someone willing to jump into a vicious knife-fight. How? Why? Where?? – I’m not sure, but we need a real Ministry of Truth.

  32. Capitola says:

Make that Day Seven. The Gaggle’s up. No Rove. Not one question. But Ed’s back….

  33. Hillbilly says:

    Laurie Mylroie! Isn’t that Batman’s sister, err… wife…, sister…, wife…

  34. Hillbilly says:

Make that Day Seven. The Gaggle’s up. No Rove. Not one question. But Ed’s back….

ED was busy this AM, fixing the little error in his Whois reg. info.

  35. Polipundit says:

How about every single time the Press Corps asks Scott a question, he rebuffs them and follows it up with a, “I don’t want to speculate” or “I don’t want to get into that”

Yep, the lions have gotten smart to know they weren’t going to get any fresh meat from the administration anymore. It’s all rotten, rotten, rotten.

  36. John the Elder says:

Again, as I have said several times before, consider what happened to Helen Thomas who was the dean of the WH Press corps and who had the privilege of asking the first question at a press conference, and had the termity to ask Bush a tough question which he had not been prepped for…she was banned from the White House. So today the present group of weakneed sycophants don’t ask questions that their bosses in the corporations that control the media have not approved of, less they to get barred.
This is the climate that the chimp (apologies to chimpanzees everywhere)and his motley crew of misfits has created. Someone throw him a good sized pretzel please!

  38. lylenews says:

The First Misnomer is That There Is A White House Press Corps
The OutHOuse has been feeding members of their transcription service breakfast lunch and dinner since the coup of 2000. No One is going to beleive that they want to lose their place at the table by upsetting Scotty or Karl.

  39. mike says:

Um… I’ll admit that I don’t really know the ins and outs of how this works, but my guess is that the press corp hasn’t asked any questions because they haven’t had the opportunity. Isn’t it convenient that McClellan hasn’t held a press briefing since June 29th:
    http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/briefings/

Just wanted to reference an article in the WaPo by Dan Biaz:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/07/AR2005070702215.html

with a little luck, i hope, plame-gate will hit the tipping point very soon. i’ve already email a good chuck of the WH press corps. and my congressmen…

  41. jay vitroli says:

well i don’t know how this will come across, but some blogs indicate the mosad had great deal to do with 911 and the statistics indicated only one israeli killed at wto, will this be evaluated in london? aka theBUSHARON TERRORISTS, not to mention we are harboring a terrrorist in adition to the administration—Carriles in fla. is a terrorist also. we have criminals in power everywhere. i think the Butcher of Beirut is out of control, all this power has dimmed him as well as all the others who got rich–bush the lesser has lots more dinero since he got into office. my grievance goes to those Londonites injured and killed. there is a great guy in london called george galloway, what he laid out is applicable to this whole group in wash. i wonder what else he has to say —–jay

  42. Swopa says:

My theory, from more than a year and a half ago:

… the journalists who directly received the leak of Ms. Wilson’s name and CIA employment won’t admit it, because they don’t want to lose future sources by blowing the whistle on a current one. This same fear exists in the Washington, D.C. press corps in general — anything that exposes or puts pressure on specific anonymous leakers is a threat to the supply of future leakers (who may fear the same tactics being used against them), and modern political/governmental journalism depends on that supply.

To the D.C. media establishment, therefore, the Plame leak investigation is a worrisome omen, and its success would be a bad precedent. As a result, they show no great enthusiasm for pushing it along — and are, perhaps, quietly cheering for the Bushites to escape unscathed.

  43. Reg says:

    Here’s the question to ponder:

    Corporate News Media
    Incompetent, Criminally Negligent or Complicit?

Incompetent journalists, criminally negligent journalists or liars who are complicit in the mass deception of the American people; there are no other ways whatsoever to describe the men and women who comprise the corporate news institutions of the United States. From the hired face you see every day on the boob tube to the journalism intern every person currently employed in the corporate media today has some soul searching to do.

  44. Sarah says:

With the increasing questions and suspicions about Judith Miller, who’s to say she is not a covert propagandist for the White House, like Armstrong Williams? Something seems wrong there–her ties with Chalabi, her case for the WMDs and the rationale for the Iraq War, her protecting a criminal who committed an act of treason. I heard her interviewed on Fresh Aire–all righteous about protecting a reporter’s right of confidentiality. She just sounded lame to me–puffed up or delusional or simplistic–I couldn’t put my finger on it but I wasn’t buying it. I found Cooper much more believable.

  45. Nancy says:

Perhaps the WH “Press Corps” and members of Congress remember too vividly what happened to two Democratic senators (and family member(s)after expressing strong opposition to Bush/Cheney/Rove/Hughes tactics……very mysterious, under-reported and under-investigated plane crashes…..Bush couldn’t function without Rove. Does anyone really believe that this lying bunch of war mongers who have NO conscience about sacrificing lives, whether on the battlefield in an illegal war or a CIA agent involved in issues of national security…would ever tell the truth about anything, or ever give-up anyone in their corrupt cartel? “Privilege” enjoyed by Novak and his ilk should end when a crime is being committed…just as it does for doctors, lawyers, therapists, etc. But we have been taken over by radical extremists in the WH every bit as lethal as those they spend their time sending innocent young men and women to fight…..

  46. woof blister says:

the white house stenographers corpse can bite me. every lapdog roundheeled enabler of the junta can bite me.
they don’t ask questions because they are too busy regurgitating some halfwit press release that a stooge tool handed them in the buffet line while filling their plates with phonus balonus.

    Comment by jay vitroli — July 8, 2005 @ 7:48 pm

While I totally agree with your assessment jay, any time you dare to bring up the documentated apartheid and terrorism of the IDF and Mossad, you’re immediately deemed some lunatic anti-semite.

What I’d like to know is what are the chances that a sadistic corrupt weasel like Rudi Giuliani could be only a block away from both the 89-11 AND London attacks?

Let’s not forget the massive 9-11 cover-up that has been whitewashed in the US. For any trolls lurking, go get your education here…http://www.thedossier.ukonline.co.uk/

  48. mondo says:

Rudi Giuliani’s security company along with certain Israeli intelligence are involved in this London attack. Or at the very least, knew beforehand.

  49. gonnuts says:

Let’s see … they din’t ask about the 2000 elections, ENRON, Mediacare, 9/11, Iraq, 2004 elections, Jeff Gannon, Downing Street Memo’s, to anme just the obvious, and now you’re wondering why they aren’t digging into a treasonist act committed by this administration?

Gee, I don’t know, think it could be they’d lose their jobs (or worse)if they started asking questions that would expose their complicity with the corporations that sign their checks?

    Nahhhh …

  50. David B says:

#31 – Ministry of Truth, I like that idea. Bill Moyers could lead the charge.

  51. Skid says:

Plamegate is a blatant attack on Americans and the principle of the 4th estate by SOMEBODY using source confidentiality for whistle blowers in public interest AGAINST those it was meant to protect ultimately.

Shorter? An attempt to demean the privilege by using it for evil instead of good.

You’re a clever one Mr. Grinch.

  52. J. L. Young says:

Isn’t it v. lucky for Bush & Co. that the London attacks have served to take all the media’s attention away from the Valerie Plame story? Is this mere coincidence? Bush CANNOT function w/o Rove…Rove is Bush’s brain…to paraphrase….there’s something stinking rotten in the state of D.C.

  53. Volvo Liberal says:

Might have to pull the old $1,000 reward/bribe from the blogosphere for just one reporter to do their damn job…Drag a few c-notes through the WH Press Corps and you never know what you may find…

  54. Skid says:

    Volvo,

It seems to be their M.O.

    JL,

Fortunately, Fitz still has a job to do. He hasn’t forgotten, just as we haven’t either. What he has to work with though may be another story. Its not over yet.

  55. S. Bielfeldt says:

The WH press corps have become a part of the “boys club.” Andrea Mitchell ain’t a boy, but her reporting is in line with hubby. Funny how the well-connected Greenspans have done really well during Al’s tenure. Probably a coincidence.

  56. Abbe Buck, Publicist says:

    from my blog http://www.highvizpr.blogspot.com

Why? Why? Why? Inquiring bloggers want to know–

–before they are “SILENCED BY THE WHITE HOUSE”*** backgrounder LA TIMES – Two years into CIA Leak no probe, no charges *** DAY 6 WH Press Corp Silent on Rove ***

The following is courtesy of John A’s AmericaBlog. Yes, Jeff Gannon asked a question devoid of acceptance, and poof! Banished. Exposed. Helen Thomas? Relegated to the back of the room for digging too deep, after 40 years, they so want to put her out to pasture! The woman can still do her job, let her do it. Get Scottie McLellan,White House Press Secretary mad and it is silence, which is deafening. Reporter and WHO alike are playing at national news like a it’s a soap opera, yes, a lot like the Lewinsky show (see below)

  57. Fred says:

The interaction between the WH and Press Corps kinda reminds me of parts in the book “Confederacy of Dunces”

  58. Lars says:

Shouldn’t President Bush place Karl Rove on Administrative Leave ? Remember when Bush said “I don’t think they will catch the leakers”, instead of what a REAL President would have said: “The United States will spare no expense to route Treasonous behaviour out of THIS White House”. By not immediately placing Rove on administrative leave, Bush risks more legal problems for himself. Or, is there something Ive missed ?

  59. JoshDestardi says:

Hm. To the response saying “no sex” is the reason for lack of response by the WH press corps, no disrespect, but we had Jeff Gannon, a gay hooker involved in this admin, but that didn’t get any traction.

It’s cuz Hitler-Bush is controlling all information.

[...] So now that credible news is finally breaking on all of this, why isn’t the White House press corps following up on what we all basically knew from 2 years ago? [...]

  61. a.s. says:

[...] Finally, the White House press corps gets its act together. [...]

  63. Sara says:

Wow! Thanks Chris McFarland for that immense list. Let’s all pass it on to as many folks as possible and take back the country!!!!

  64. Bob says:

Just to note, Sara, that I sent in a Comment (number 30) with a link to the entire White House Press Corps on Friday, which must have been the source of the major turnaround today…just for the record…

  65. Lynn says:

My curiosity about Judith Miller is even greater now that the content of Cooper’s notes are known. She must be concealing something more exculpatory than Matt Cooper possessed. Otherwise, why would she still be sitting tight while everyone (except for the White House Press Corps) knows the truth about Karl Rove.

  66. Finnegen says:

I’d like a reporter to ask – “Why hasn’t President Bush demanded the WH source who violated the law and damaged our ability to halt the proliferation of nuclear weapons by outing an undercover operative turn themselves in and not have to force the government and others to spend so much time and money on and investigation trying to identify him? â€? Instead he [Bush]stated, when this first began, we probably never know who did it, but they need to ask “Did he already know?â€?

  67. Stormin Norman says:

By all means, it’s time to go after Rove with whatever resources are needed. It is also time to start the sinking exercise on Bob Novak, who continues to hide behind his attorney and Republican friends. BOth Rove and Novak are nothing more than 2 narrow minded, self-centered, egotistical, capitalistic bigots —just like “GW”.

  68. ted craft says:

It seems that reasonable inference is Mr. Rove’s problem. If, indeed, he mentioned Mrs. Plame in the same sentence in which WMD and the CIA was used, a reporter would resonably draw the inference that something was being suggested that went beyond the context. What the hell am I talking about?

  69. Oliver Willis » Skepticism (or, Why Journalists Stink) says:

[...] I’ve got to say that I essentially agree with Matt Yglesias here that any sort of conclusion drawn from the relatively harsh questioning (well, at least compared to the usual game of pattycake) is premature. Just in my limited experience of following the press and its interactions with the White House, its clear we’ve been here before. The press seemingly wakes up out of its slumber, only to lose interest the next day (Hurricane? Shark Attack? Missing White Woman?). To think that the same press corps who laughed Ari Fleischer out of the room and then ignored the Rove story for days on end is going to suddenly do something like commit an act of journalism is kind of like the put-upon parent thinking that this time their kid is going to kick his drug habit. [...]

  70. Lynn says:

I still think Judith Miller has something more serious to hide. My understanding of her orientation is that she’s a strong supporter of this administration. Maybe Dick Cheney or G.H.W. Bush had a hand in the Valerie Plame incident. In my last comment (#72) I should have said “culpable” instead of “exculpatory”. Same root. Anyway, is it possible that the N.Y.Times might not want to expose the involvement of either of those two?

  73. Leah Patriot says:

If the collective press corp had an actual IQ, that would be a miracle. Journalists are people who are unable to think for themselves and who do not understand simple concepts. They are too stupid to pursue a degree involving anything with Math or Science. Journalists are stupid people with small minds and worthless commentary. If you were to add the IQ’s of every journalist in the White House Press corp…it would not total enough to be even considered at the level of mental retardation. Remind them not to leave their glass unattended at their local drinking hole or someone might just be tempted to spike it with Potassium chloride, a lovely lethal dose that would shut them up FOREVER!

  74. Lil Kim says:
