Fred Phelps, head of the Westboro Baptist church, isn’t content with just celebrating hate crimes or the death of American soldiers. The group has now posted a press release in response to yesterday’s horrific attacks on London.

These “christians” picketed a high school graduation near me (Tracy, CA)this spring because they allowed a LGBT group of students to form their own club (google it if you don’t know).
I was raised in a church that focused on the love aspects. I don’t think I ever heard a sermon about hell there. I’m not a scholor on the book of Revalations but it would sure seem to me that these nuts are as close to the antichrist leading a flock astray as anyone could get.
I don’t think they really are that much different from the whole gamut of right wing (or left wing ,although I can’t name ANY of those) christian groups other than the fact that they seem to have no sense of propriety. To be saying such things out loud and trying to link it to anything I was taught as a youth is beyond comprehension.
I still think much of what I learned then is applicable now, although I have broadened my spiritual outlook to include things not found in any “traditional” churches. As such, I probably can’t call myself a true christian any more. Just spiritually enhanced.
The extremes of any group or religion shouldn’t be the ones mapping the road. Unfortunately in todays world, they are the ones running the show in all too many arenas.

And if these ignorant bozo preachers would simply read the page this sentence is written on very carefully, they’ll see that the preceeding _two_ paragraphs admonish the followers of Jesus to not take legal action against each other!
Now, what’s more important to these poor ignorant bastards? Hatemongering against gays? Or lawyering? And which does the Bible tell them to pay more attention to? See any disconnect there?
This country is going to h**l, and it is NOT due to liberalism. It’s due to greedy warmongering money-loving Repugs and hatemongering war-loving gay-bashing christians.

July 8th, 2005 at 2:58 pmi think guys like phelps are great. democrat or not, i think people see him as a very visible guy pushing an ostensibly christian agenda, and while i have no problem with “true” christianity (i.e. loving-kindness, compassion, all the things the real world religions espouse) it doesn’t belong in government.
and i think guys like phelps help push the public opinion towards secularism, because most people find him abjectly terrifying and offensive, and secularism is a public opinion we need to be fostering in these rather scary political times.
i can put up with being offended by wackos like phelps in exchange for that greater good. i say bring on more of the phelps!

July 8th, 2005 at 6:27 pmjillian: i’ve called them a number of times, and they’re hysterical. my freshman year in college, my roommates and i would listen to fred’s sermons, and just die of laughter. phelps lines have become jokes in my circle of friends.
you have to laugh at them, because they’re so absurd. the last time shirley (one of fred’s daughter) was on howard stern, he asked her if she’d ever “pleasured herself with a cucumber.”
if you call and argue with them, you’re not going to get anything done. these people don’t want to hear from anyone, they just want to wallow in their own stupidity. they’ll call you a clown, a jew, or a fag. (or maybe some combination of the three!) you just have to laugh at them and realize how incredibly deluded they are.
but if you want a good read, check out the expose that was written about them awhile back. pretty interesting stuff.

You can find hateful opinions in bars from sad old alcoholics, or extended rants by patients in psychiatric hospitals, but they don’t get reported. By doing so with Phelps, you’re encouraging the nutcase to think that he’s important. Please ignore the loon. He’s no more important than a random stream of insults from an anonymous internet poster.

are as far right as you can get. Whats the matter
with Kansas? I now live in MA and most here are
tolerant with just about everyone. Does everyone know
MA has the lowest divorce rate of the 50 states. The
highest being the red states. Probably because of the
catholic majority. The most popular show on TV is
Desperate Housewives.
People here are fairly conservative also, regardless
of what other states think. We voted for McGovern
against Nixon, only state. The gods have not destroyed
us yet for gay marriage.
The vast differences between KS and MA are incredible.
The blue laws are still on the books since the pilgrims.
No dancing on Sundays. Bars were closed on Sundays untill
just a few years ago. No stores except mom and pop open
on Sundays. Now stores pay a fine for opening on Sunday
mornings and must pay time and one half.
Every time someone up here says I have been to KS and
there is nothing there. I say, you know your correct.
The Christian Temperence Union was started in KS. It is
still there. More kooks came from there than any other
state and I don’t know why. I don’t think the population
has increased 10% in the last 60 years.

And really, as much as we like to think we’re a nice Left society in Britain, Catholic SPAIN is more receptive to homosexual rights than we are. Shameful.

July 14th, 2005 at 6:27 pmPhelps’ group protested at the funeral of a soldier in Illinois in June. The protest there had nothing to do with sexual orientation. They were “celebrating” the fact that the soldier was killed by an i.e.d. Apparently it had something to do with the fact that their church was bombed by a similar device. They carried repulsive, offensive signs and shouted obscenities to the mourners. They left, under police protection, after 200 motorcycle riders positioned themselves across the street from the protesters.

The woman they talk to (who is a Westboro lawyer and daughter of Phelps) is just ignorant in pretty much every way you can be ignorant. I laughed heartily.

Surely, no matter what his and his followers’ “beliefs” are (and I use the word loosely), there is no justification for picketing the funerals of soldiers who have fallen in Iraq? It wouldn’t be any less evil, or even understandable, but perhaps you could begin to gain a tiny modicum of understanding at his antics IF the soldier in question was gay. I wouldn’t understand it, but I could see some sort of demented, twisted parallel. But that’s not what he’s saying! He’s THANKING GOD for IEDs that killed these guys, because America allows gays to live! I mean, surely there must be some sort of precedent to have the guy if not arrested, then banned from military funerals? I do not in any way agree with the war, but you can’t believe anyone — ANYONE — should be allowed to spout obscenities and degrade the final laying to rest of someone who has given his life — rightly or wrongly — for his country?
