Why did Karl Rove leak the covert identy of a CIA agent to a reporter? Here’s what his lawyer wants you to believe:
Robert Luskin, attorney for Karl Rove: “This was not an effort to encourage Time to disclose her identity. What he was doing was discouraging Time from perpetuating some statements that had been made publicly and weren’t true.”
But before getting sucked into that spin, it’s important to remember what a senior administration official told the Washington Post shortly after the leak investigation began.
“A senior administration official said that before Novak’s column ran, two top White House officials called at least six Washington journalists and disclosed the identity and occupation of Wilson’s wife ‘Clearly, it was meant purely and simply for revenge,’ the senior official said of the alleged leak.”
Rove's lawyer is a liar too.

July 11th, 2005 at 10:17 amNow we get to see how long Karl can tread water while holding an anchor.
With any other administration, I would put that time in days. With this administration, I put the timeframe in months to years. It's OK though. It'll give us enough time to take the administration down with him.
I'm waiting.
July 11th, 2005 at 10:17 amThis image captures Rove's intent and the White House's intent to cover up as soon as the scandal broke in 2003.
July 11th, 2005 at 10:19 amBy the way, it's beginning to look like the Rove defense will be a bad parody past Clinton scandals:
- It all depends on what the meaning of "naming names" is.
- There is "no controlling legal authority."
July 11th, 2005 at 10:22 amblockbuster -- maybe we can get the Dems to write another letter!
Look out, Karl.
July 11th, 2005 at 10:28 amBoth statements are true
(1) Rove was attempting to stop Time from reporting on Wilson's annihilation of the Bush lie about Niger yellow cake
(2) Rove et al were punishing the anti-invasion intelligence camp
It's called killing two birds with one stone

July 11th, 2005 at 10:52 amSomething is fishy on the very surface of this report. It also says "Luskin said Cooper had been clear to testify all along -- because of the waiver signed 18 months ago -- but that the waiver was "reaffirmed" on Wednesday, the day of a hearing to decide whether he and Miller would go to jail."
So Cooper was willing to go to jail to protect a source who had already waived the right to be protected? He would actually have gone to jail if Rove had not "reaffirmed" the waiver?
Something else is going on with both the waiver and Rove's comments to reporters about Wilson's wife. Does a waiver "authorizing prosecutors to speak to any reporters Rove had previously engaged in discussion, which included Cooper" also waive his right to hold Cooper to confidentiality? Does a claim that "I didn't know her name" mean he knew her name was Plame or Wilson, but he wasn't sure about the "Valerie" part?
Does all this mean that Rove is a huge liar or the world's most disingenuous semantics slinger?
July 11th, 2005 at 10:54 amSomething is fishy about the entire story
No one in the propagandist media has followed up on why Judith Miller went to jail while Cooper did not. Presumably Miller is doing time because her source did not authorize her. Which means she has a different source than Cooper did.
So who is Miller's source?
No one is asking that question
July 11th, 2005 at 10:58 amThat is a possibility, but more likely, Time was named in the Cooper case as a co-defendant. In Judy's case the NYT was not named. Time Mag didn't want to eat the fines whereas the NYT doesn't have that liability. They can sit back and say OH woe poor Judy but have nothing of their ass exposed.
July 11th, 2005 at 1:17 pmWhat's really funny is that even Luskin's spin is a bold faced lie. He's saying the emperor of Evil was simply trying to stop the publication of statements which were untrue. Of course, that's false on two levels. Wilson's statements had already been published when Rove talked. Secondly, everything Wilson said was absolutely true, rather than the falsehoods Rove tried to stop after they'd already been published. If this is the best his lawyer can do, Rove is reaaaaaalllly in deep shit.
