Karl Rove’s Smear Campaign Continues?

In the press conference this afternoon, reporter Terry Moran grilled White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan about recent talking points attacking Joe Wilson which contained information which could only have come from Karl Rove. It was immediately back to the No Comment defense for McClellan.

MORAN: … Fox News and other surrogates are essentially saying that the conversation lasted for two minutes and that the subject was ostensibly welfare reform. They’re getting that information from here, from Karl Rove.

MCCLELLAN: And, again, you’re asking questions that are related to news reports about an ongoing, continuing investigation. And you’ve had my response on that…

It’s a very good question. While the White House locks down and clams up , is Karl Rove once again in the shadows, secretly spreading information (in this case about an “ongoing investigation”) to try to smear Joe Wilson and influence the media?

It's time for President Bush to apologize to Joe Wilson, Valerie Plame and the American people.

Unfortunately, the President is still stuck on Step 8 - making amends - of the Bush 12-Step Program.

  4. Mikey Says:

So what is "a new methodology to better track terrorist attacks across the world"? Is there some new method of counting that mathemeticians have recently discovered? Do they only count every other one so it doesn't look so bad?

But seriously, I've heard it from more than one collegue at the office so it's not just me - is this whole Rove/Plame exchange an intentional distraction from the Downing Street Memo? Or something bigger?

  6. John D Says:

In response to MKay. I also believe this is a throwoff from the real story of the downingstreet memo's. What else does that administration have to hide? We all know that the plan for the Iraq war was composed long before Alfred E Newman, AKA George W Bush, took office. We all know the type of person Karl Rove is and the means he will go to to get his way. Lets not let the White House intimidate us. Write, Email or Phone your representatives and ask for a full investigation into the Karl Rove saga and the downingstreet memo's, I did and my representative is from New Hampshire, a Republican state. ASK QUESTIONS, DEMAND ANSWERS.

  7. Flamethrower Says:

they're also trying to say Plame authorized the trip -- they would really have allowed that? Not in a million years....HA HA.

  8. Jay Says:

I'm with you guys on the spin away from the bigger cover-ups, but this is tantalizing nonetheless. The more play this gets the more toothless the Bushies become.....and on to severe lameduckery.

John D, just for the record, NH now has a D governor and it voted blue in the last election.

  9. Cee Says:

I read the RNC site comments on Karl Rove. Three lines were devoted to telling us that Karl Rove was trying to save the world from an incorrect story by Joe Wilson. The rest of the page dealt with the Wilson story. Nada about what Karl Rove did or did not do. It appeared they had nothing good to say about the leak, so they tried to direct attention elsewhere and make Wilson the bad guy. Pathetic.

  10. Susan Says:

Great suggestions by all of the above.
We are making progress. Even if this is a distraction, it's not a good one for Bushco.

    Plunger #5,
I appreciate your contribution. Persistance is our best allie.

I've suggested this before and I'll suggest it again.

    BE THE MEDIA!

If the so-called mainstream media doesn't want to report the news than take on that role yourself. I've been doing that myself and it is very rewarding and appreciated by the American people who want answers.

I've been persistant in my local cause and have recieved very positive media attention. I will continue to recieve positive media attention because I'm blasting the airwaves with my intentions and demands.

Try it, it's fun and rewarding.

Coming soon, extended internet broadcasts via my website.

What do you think? I would like to do an hour show discussing topics and comments from right here at.......

    Could be fun, huh?

  11. Mike Says:

    Jon,

Actually, Bush has yet to start his 12-step program. He's still in denial.

  12. bootz Says:

The facts are damning, so it's time to smear the messenger. Here's Deborah Orin, New York Post, on Hardball last night reciting the White House's talking points on Wilson:

ORIN: Oh, please. I mean, this is not Watergate. Democrats are always dreaming that they have got a new Watergate. This is not a new Watergate.

What has come out pretty clearly so far, I think, is—there is an issue of whether Karl Rove told the truth and the whole truth. But what's more important is, it is clear that Joe Wilson didn't tell the truth. We have a bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report that says, on virtually every point that Joe Wilson made, starting from denying his wife had him sent on the trip, which turns out to be not true.

    MATTHEWS: Right. She did.

ORIN: She did. And to claiming that he found that there was no ties with Iraq and that he reported that, which he did not report. He reported, if anything, the opposite.

To claiming that he reported there were forged documents, which was not true, because he never even saw the documents. So, Joe Wilson's credibility is seriously in question. And what we now see is, what Karl Rove appears to have been doing was to be pointing out to “TIME magazine that Joe Wilson could not be trusted, rather than trying to get even with Joe Wilson.

And it is sort of fascinating, because, you know, for a year, the press reported Joe Wilson's charges. And then, when the Senate Intelligence Committee said they were all false, it didn't.

Orin's full of crap, but she got it out on the airwaves without a challenge.

  13. miquel Says:

Don't worry, I'am sure Faux news will cover, distort, confuse, and spin for the white house. All chaos will be restored

  14. Joel Dobbin Says:

All the anti-radar chaff concerning whether Joe Wilson's trip to Nigeria was promulgated by valerie Plame is meaningless. Wilson could have been sent there by the tooth fairy - it doesn't matter. What's important is that Saddam was not attempting to by "yellow cake". Wilson so advised the administration which then followed up by having Alfred E. Newman lie about it in the text of his State of the Union address.
Now the Malevolent Pillsbury Dough-Boy and his tame monkeys at Fox News are trying to divert attention from Rove's act of treason and Bush's blatant lies by demonizing both Wilson and Plame. I haven't heard what the fat junkie Rush has to say yet but I'm sure he's toeing the company line. If not, they're liable to cut off his Oxycontin supply. Can't have poor old junkie Rush go cold turkey, can we?
let us try to keep in mind who the bad guys are here.

  16. The Janitors, American Federalist Urinal Says:

This is connected to the DSM. The DSM is about falsifying intelligence for an illegal war. That also entails discrediting real intelligence data that does not justify the illegal war. Talk abut tenacious as a Bulldog. It's good to see, but keep the Big Picture in mind. It's all connected. Think "conspiracy" because that's what this is. That's likely what Fitzgerald is ging for. Conspiracy is so easy to prove, too.

  17. Steed Lankershim Says:

Joel, read the SIC report and rethink your post. Orin was correct in her summary of the report. Joe told lies that you all are still repeating. But Joe's lies are okay since they can be used to bring Rove and Bush down, right?

  18. vaughan thomas Says:

I think Rove is still being cited in the newspapers as "an anonymous senior administration official". Check out this paragraph from the NYT, and consider that Mr. Rove made no PUBLIC comment--perhaps he's the one pushing the "business as usual" talking point, which imho is ridiculous to print on an anonymous basis:

"Mr. Rove made no public comment. A senior administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the White House now says its official position is not to comment on the case while it is under investigation by a federal special prosecutor, said Mr. Rove had gone about his business as usual on Monday. The official said Mr. Rove had held his regular meetings with Mr. Bush and other top White House aides, and was deeply involved in preparations for the Supreme Court nomination and efforts to push several major pieces of legislation through Congress this month."

Clearly, the White House hides from the press in public, but is still busy pushing their side of the story with shady methods of anonymity.

  19. The Janitors, American Federalist Urinal Says:

Some folks have observed that what looks to be happening is in-fighting at the top among Cheney/Libby/Rove. They may be involved in a game of spin and PR to see who gets stuck holding the bag, but if the bag is conspiracy to obstruct justice, nt just the leaking of classified info, the whole house cards could come down. So far it looks like Rove is getting screwed, and he's supposed to be the master at this sort of political knife fight. This is far worse than we are aware, for all of them. The feeding frenzy has started and the sharks are taking big bites out of each other. Keep chumming.

  20. Victoria Love Says:

This is the time to start grilling McLellan on the Downing Street Memos. The Rove coverup has exposed them as the liars that we know they are....why not bring down an avalanche on them while they are struggling with this? While the spotlight is on, the press should go for their throats.

  21. The Janitors, American Federalist Urinal Says:

But Joe’s lies are okay since they can be used to bring Rove and Bush down, right?

  23. The Bulldog Manifesto Says:

Is there anything more disgusting than talking points? Its like we have robots for politicians now. Just press a button and they talk the same line over and over and over again! Without a real thought or opinion of their own.

  24. theorajones Says:

Okay, I simply fail to see how pointing to the fact that Wilson was calling the Administration out on their exaggerations (to put it kindly) on Iraqi WMDs helps the administration. I mean, how does that exchange go?

"We didn't deliberately out his wife. We just said that because his wife sent him on a vacation to Niger, you shouldn't believe what his WMD "investigation" turned up."

"Oh. So, what did that vacation/investigation thing turn up?"

"Uh, well, pretty much what every other investigation turned up. That the whole yellowcake thing wasn't for real. But that's not important here, let's focus on my story that Valerie Plame sent her husband on a junket to the well-known tourist paradise of Niger..."

"Sorry, this would be the same yellowcake you were using to justify the war?"

  25. bootz Says:

    >Orin was correct in her summary of the report. Joe told lies that you all are still repeating. But Joe’s lies are okay since they can be used to bring Rove and Bush down, right?

Nope. Orin was wrong. As I had posted yesterday, many of the RNC talking points are based on a WaPo story by Susan Schmidt, which gets dismantled by Joshua Micah Marshall at TPM:

    http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2004_07_04.php#003143

Also, pay attention to the wordsmithing in the RNC talking points about Wilson - "Officials Said Evidence Was 'Thin' And His 'Homework Was Shoddy'" - Which officials?

By the way, I still believe the 2004 presidential election was stolen.....

  28. Jeff Fallert Says:

Good... the more Karl tries to smear Wilson... the easier it will be to prove 'intent' when it comes to his outing of Plame.

Hope he gets caught with this crap as well... he's burying himself, the more the better.

I want an indictment... screw firing him, I hope monkeyboy TRIES to protect him... when the charges are filed, they can empty out the whole White House.

  29. Reg Says:

Why is everyone still listening to the corporate media? They will continue to be the spin machine for the RNC. Every statement critical of Rove is being described as coming from Democrats. 30. Darren Thorneycroft Says:

    Two points:

    1) Why isn't Novak on the hot seat? After all, he's the one who actually put the information out into the public realm. I've read and read and read, blogs and traditional media and lefty press, and still can't find a credible answer to that question.

    2) Don't be surprised if W. later pardons Rove for his misdeeds. I would expect that news to hit the airwaves oh, about 5:30 Eastern on Christmas Eve............

  31. kjohns7900 Says:

Darren: The first person to "sing" gets the sweetest deal from the prosecutor. That the way it always works.

  32. Carol Barker Says:

All I want for Christmas is Novak and Rove in jail.

I am also sick to death of all these he-man, kick-ass macho guys (Rove) talking about about what a wonderful thing we are doing in Iraq. I have twin 20 year old Marines, one presently in Operation Sword. Rove "never" wore the uniform, like most in the administration. How brave they are with the lives of our children. I have an idea!!! Those of you that think it is such a good idea.........GO or send your kids. Send my kids home safely.

When is it time for all of us to open the windows and start yelling that we are mad as hell and are not going to take it anymore?

  33. bastid Says:

  34. Robert Sadinsky Says:

Wasn't the Wilson trip to Niger made as a response to a Cheney request that the Uranium story be checked out? Why is there all this crap floating around that Wilson was tapped to do this by his wife and that he is a Democratic partisan! Who authorized the trip and why are Wilson's nonpartisan credentials not a part of this story!
Cheney and Bush lied about the intelligence that they used to go to war on! They used the Plame case to put a chill on the intelligence community to keep their mouths shut and go along with the Party Line. Joe Wilson challenged them and the administration struck back at the Wilson's with a message for all! Keep your mouth shut,or else!

  35. KMYOUNG Says:

The reason why Novak is not in the hot seat is because he's already squealed to the special prosecutor about Rove. Fitzgerald is simply gathering more evidence to fuel the fire. If the press is persistent, then the Bushies will burn.

  36. Andrew Wanielista Says:

This whole rove thing worreys me.
Have you ever cornered a mouse? It would amase you how ferce they can be.
Imagen the hell (terrost attacks? further repeals of civel liberty? ) that will break loose when bushco finds it's caught in the trap?

  37. Watergateredux Says:

My question is: what did Bush know and when did he know? Was he in on this with Rove from the beginning or has his "trusted advisor" been lying to him for 2 years? And which is worse: that Bush's "architect" misled and lied to him, showing Bush is not in charge, or that Bush was part of a criminal conspiracy and lied repeatedly to the American public?

  38. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

Has it occurred to anyone here that Joe Wilson lied? The "bipartisan" senate report says so. You people are making this too easy. You should all write a book on how to further your political demise.

  39. John S. Says:

Has it occurred to anyone here that Joe Wilson lied?

Of course, but that has noever been proved, and of course is irrelevant to the matter at hand.

But you have dutifully played the card you were told to by the GOP talking points, and your party salutes you.

Now would you care to explain the relevance of your cunard to Rove leaking information to a reporter to smear Wilson?

  40. karin Says:

you know, i would not mind seceding from the non united states. i wouldn't mind giving up federal funds that i am sure these crooks are blowing and just allowing states that believe in freedom, states rights, stem cell research and democracy and honesty instead of corruption-to form it's own union. let missouri and mississippi and alabama-get together and form their own. let's see if they can live without our tax money and technology. maybe their women can wear burkas. i am sick of the people that are like backwater idiots. gimme the smart people from the idiot states that will not see truth, move them with us and let's get a real united states...not the sham that this one has become. we NEED A TAX REVOLT. NOW

  41. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

#42 - you appear to have the left's talking points in order, as well.

Joe Wilson accused the Admin of lying - of course they were going to fire back just like Clinton did. That's politics - something liberals seem to have no grasp on anymore. Terry Moran and the MSM minions days are numbered.

Bottom line folks - what can you do even if Rove did lie? Supoena the White House? Hold hearings? No - that requires having a power base and you have none because you keep trying to smear Bush instead of talking about issues.

But, don't stop there. The GOP thanks you and will gladly use your hate in the next election!

  42. John S. Says:

    #44

you appear to have the left’s talking points in order, as well

Since when is stating the obvious a "talking point"? Last time I checked, talking points were meant to organize a response that is not obvious, and therefore must be carefully rehearsed. But I am curious as to what lefty talking points you think I am reciting.

of course they were going to fire back just like Clinton did

Clinton tried to smear the reputation of his accusers? Do you happen to have an example of this you can cite?

Bottom line folks - what can you do even if Rove did lie?

So now you advocate that might makes right? A brilliant, though fallacious, argument you have there. As long as we are still a nation of laws, your pathetic hyperbole will not pass as an exoneration for whatever unfolds.

So back to the point...why is Rove engaging in a smear campaign if he is not trying desperately to shift the focus off himself (much in the way your entire post tries to shift the focus off relevant issues)?

  43. The Northeast Dilemma Says:

John S. - get over it. You lost the election. Rove was defending the Admin against a LIAR like Joe Wilson.

Clinton smeared Kathleen Willey, Ken Starr, Paula Jones, Newt - the list is endless. This is politics and you are LOSING. AND you are losing because you are no longer relevant. Conservatives are fighting back and I promise you it will only get worse. You're days are up!

  44. Susan Says:

    You get over it Dilemma.

This outing was a direct result of Wilson refusing to "fix intelligence".

This scandal reinforces the Downing Street Minutes accuracy.

Ha, Ha, BushCo is going down for attacking a country illegally.

  45. Always Right Says:

I would have to agree with TND, John S. get over it. Rove was the next in a list of targets by the left to discredit the administration. It is obvious now that Rove committed no crime so the left is questioning his loyalty and whether Bush should fire him. Well, thats not going to happen! Get over it and move on.

  46. John S. Says:

    #46

John S. - get over it. You lost the election. Rove was defending the Admin against a LIAR like Joe Wilson.I did not run for office, so I didn't lose anything.

Also, where is your proof that Wilson lied about the administration?

Clinton smeared Kathleen Willey, Ken Starr, Paula Jones, Newt - the list is endless.

Care to provide evidence, or are we to simply take you at your word (whatever that is worth)?

This is politics and you are LOSING. AND you are losing because you are no longer relevant. Conservatives are fighting back and I promise you it will only get worse. You’re days are up!

Again, I am not losing anything. And the only thing irrelevant here are your comments. If this is how conservatives "fight back" - with scurrilous claims and dodging questions - then I am not too concerned.

  47. John S. Says:

    #48

I would have to agree with TND, John S. get over it.

Get over what, exactly? I refer to you post #49.

Rove was the next in a list of targets by the left to discredit the administration.

This administration doesn't need to have anyone targeted for discrediting. They do a fine job of it all by themselves.

It is obvious now that Rove committed no crime

Obvious to whom? You and the rest of the GOP? I daresay your opinion of any consequence to Fitzgerald. But you sound so sure of yourself...what is your rationale that leads you to believe that Rove committed no crime? What proof do you have that the grand jury doesn't?

Get over it and move on.

Are you still talking about last year's election, or a criminal investigation that has yet to be concluded?

  48. Crooked Timber » » Enjoy the moral clarity Says:

If Republicans and Karl Rove think he's getting a bum deal with all the cries from Democrats calling for his resignation, Rove has only himself to blame. Last week he smeared all Democrats/liberals by literally accusing them of pampering the terrorists while Republicans/conservatives called for war. If Democrats are unlikely to be more restrained, no one should be surprised, least of all Mr. Rove.

  50. Clemsy Says:

    #48 & 46,

Joe Wilson is one of the most impressive diplomats this country has produced:

    * 1976-1978: General Services Officer, U.S Embassy, Niger
    * 1978-1979: Administrative Officer, U.S. Embassy, Togo
    * 1979-1981: Administrative Officer, State Department
    * 1981-1982: Administrative Officer, U.S. Embassy, South Africa
    * 1982-1985: Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy, Burundi
    * 1985-1986: Congressional Fellow, offices of Sen. Al Gore and Rep. Tom Foley
    * 1986-1988: Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy, Republic of the Congo
    * 1988-1991: Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy, Iraq
    * 1992-1995: Ambassador to Gabon and São Tomé and Príncipe (concurrently)
    * 1995-1997: Political Adviser to Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Armed Forces Europe
    * 1997-1998: Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs, National Security Council

Note that Iraq appointment and this anecdote:

"As acting ambassador to Iraq in the run-up to the first Gulf War, he was the last US diplomat to meet with Saddam Hussein, in 1991.

He very publicly defied the Iraqi strongman by giving refuge to more than 100 US citizens at the embassy and in the homes of US diplomats - at a time when Saddam Hussein was threatening to execute anyone who harboured foreigners.

He then addressed journalists wearing a hangman's noose instead of a necktie.

He later told the Washington Post newspaper that the message to Saddam Hussein was: "If you want to execute me, I'll bring my own [expletive] rope." ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3156166.stm)

Go ahead with your blind faith. Convince yourself that Joe Wilson is liar. Rove is used to his victims rolling over but in Wilson, a man of utmost integrity, he's met his match. You want to follow him over the cliff?

    Go lemmings, go.

  51. CSTime Says:

This is just another example of how, when the GOP gets caught with their pants down, they refuse to take any responsibility for their actions. So much "restoring honor to the Oval Office", and all that B.S. When in doubt, the GOP always goes to the cheese tactics. Which is why, rather than address the actual problem, they go to the old classic cards; "liberal media", "Clinton", "Clinton", "Clinton", and "You Lost".

If you want to follow those right-wing parrots, fine. I've got no problems with that. Yet the fact that you would support and stand behind a person who lied to prove some political point is on your conscience, and speaks to your "moral" values. It's just strange that for eight years, you people wanted to find the "truth" about anything and everything regarding Clinton. Where's the intensity for the truth now? Or was all that Clinton crap a game you all played for personal gain? The only conclusion I can draw from all that, in comparison to what's gone on in the last 4 1/2 years is that you have no regard for the truth. Not unless it makes your political point, anyway. If you all were so hungry for the actual truth, you would be approaching this case with the same intensity that you put into File-Travel-Paula-Monica-China-whatever-the-hell-ever-else-Gate all those years.

I'm willing to bet $100 over 20 years that you won't. Cowards. You talk a lot of bull about values, morals, and the truth, but you can't back it up.

  52. DRadguy Says:

Karl and Cheney are loving this - while we debate the finer points of the 1982 law, every hour hundreds of millions roll into the coffers of Halliburton - unchecked, and with mostly zero competition from other bidding contractors, and every day more and more American soldiers die. Progressive pundits need to TIE THIS ARGUMENT BACK TO THE LIES AND SMEAR CAMPAIGN AGAINST THEIR WHISTLEBLOWERS IN EVERY APPEARANCE.

It was quite satisfying to see the normally emasculated White House press corps pounce on hapless, clumsy McClellan (QT video awesome!) about his past statements defending Rove. Nowadays he’s not even willing to still uphold those statements.
