What A Difference A Day Makes

In the press briefing yesterday, White House Secretary Scott McClellan refused to answer a question about whether President Bush still had confidence in Karl Rove, citing an ongoing investigation:

Q Does the President continue to have confidence in Mr. Rove?

MR. McCLELLAN: Again, these are all questions coming up in the context of an ongoing criminal investigation. And you’ve heard my response on this.

Q So you’re not going to respond as to whether or not the President has confidence in his Deputy Chief of Staff?

MR. McCLELLAN: Carl, you’re asking this question in the context of an ongoing investigation. And I would not read anything into it other than I’m simply not going to comment on an ongoing..

Today, however, he had no problem answering the question:

QUESTION: Well, he has spoken about these questions that have come up as part of a leak investigation.

So does he retain confidence in Karl Rove specifically?

MCCLELLAN: Yes.

Stay tuned — who knows which questions will be allowed tomorrow.

So now we know. Bush loves Rove. And Rove loves Bush.

Gads! I’d love to see evidence which show’s Bush knew Rove outted Plame. That would be one sweet way to put a nail in these guys political coffins.

Its looking a whole lot like Nixon, only the stakes are much higher. Thousands of people have died around the globe as a result of these guys crimes.

  2. Darth Filibustrous says:

Looks like Scottie was slapped hard for NOT answering Republican FoxNews Carl Cameron’s “Does Bush have confidence in Rove” question… this would’ve been funny if it weren’t so sad…

  3. cynical ex-hippie says:

I’ve just gottn clearance to answer softball questions from friendly news outlets. Sit down, CBS I don’t mean you.

Bush has confidence in Rove. Bush is confident Rove will use every dirty trick to destroy their political opponents, national security be damned.

  4. SaniNation says:

Good call, cynical ex-h. Of what use is it to Plame and his family that Bush has confidence in his admin? And this raises the question — what does it tell us that McClellan had to break his inability to comment on an “ongoing invest.” just to tell us something so blase and utterly useless? It offers no response to any of the questions asked yesterday.

  5. Cee says:

Do you think the people who refused to admit mistakes in Iraq are likely to admit they were wrong about Karl Rove? Being indicted (for compromising national security or for perjury) is the only way Mr. Rove will loose his job.

  6. Alex says:

strangly, i doubt W realizes how much deep shit he is in. Rove is probably saying to him: “they aint gonna get a conviction for any of this, and in the mean time, we’ll just stonewall. we control almost every part of government, and we can sping the media. don’t worry, this will blow over. yeah, this is a tough spot, but we’ll prevail. trust me.” And i think this strategy will work, but ONLY if there are no convictions. If there is a conviction, then this could indeed bring the admin down making Watergate look like a traffic ticket. Cause you cant spin a conviction.

  7. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

This is a wee-problem for anyone opposing the Bush administration. I too seriously doubt W realizes how much s**t he _could_ be in.

I add the modifier “could”, only because there’s no one in power who has the power to oppose him. Congress? Get real. Senate? Maybe, but only if convinced? SCOTUS? Get a life. Those guys installed POTUS. MSM? Well, we’re hearing something from them. Finally. But they too are POTUS’ lapdogs.

Its kind of a grim picture. Realistically, give me some hope that POTUS is well and truely in deep guano.

  8. RichM says:

Do you think McCLELLAN misses Jeff Gannon?

  9. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

“Do you think McCLELLAN misses Jeff Gannon?”

    Nice.

I thought the Head Chimp was doing Gannon. The POTUS was the only one to be at the WhiteHouse every night Gannon spent the night. Maybe McClellan did too? A GOP high level gang bang. Ya. That must’ve been it.

  10. mike didomenico says:

Why is Judith Miller in jail? Whom is she protecting? Karl
Rove? I think not. Why would she decide to go to jail when the cat is out of the bag? What is the NY Slimes hiding? Don’t think for even a moment that she’s doing it out of a sense of committment or integrity. She’s a lefty.

  11. mondo says:

Speaking Of Gannon, how many nights did he spend in the Whitehouse?

  12. John S. says:

Why is Judith Miller in jail? Whom is she protecting?

My first instict is Dick Cheney, since he has was one of her major sources for all those articles she wrote in the run up to war (which later the NYT had to apologize for).

I have to laugh at your insinuation that “lefties” are devoid “of a sense of committment or integrity”. After all, the treasonous coward that is hiding behind Judith Miller surely comes from your camp. Yup, it’s a “righty” at the center of this scandal.

    So much for integrity.

  13. Jennty says:

There will be no “Rovegate” anything like Watergate. The House will NEVER bring charges against Duhbuhya, the Senate will NEVER try a case against Duhbuhya. It’s all moot point. The atmosphere in DC is so rank with partisan stench that Nixon could even get away with Watergate if he had this congress. The only hope for “American Democracy”, is the press really digs into this, unfortunatly they are so much a pack of whipped dogs they will do nothing, and like Ronnie, Duhbuhya will get away with nothing but a small smudge on his jacket. The Right will call him the “greatest president” ever… bla bla bla. It’s sad to see that the pin on which American Democracy hangs is so so weak.

  14. blkphillykat says:

I agree with Jennty almost completely. There is another option for American Democracy, however. All of the public servants guilty of criminal, unethical, or dangerously ignorant behavior NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE BY THE PEOPLE. Discussing how insidious or naive they must be to have done these things that ultimately have caused the loss of tens of thousands of lives is futile. If the people don’t DEMAND justice for every single culprit, no matter, which office or position he or she holds, then the renegades will indeed just wait it out and lie to the gullible after the fact about what actually transpired. Lobbying the complicit is absurd. It’s past time for allowing government officials to smile in our faces and lie while the blood of our military personnel and thousands of Iraquis are on their hands. If we the people don’t let Bush know that this is not a grinning matter, then he and his administration and cronies will keep showing us their teeth. I am too sickened after losing a friend in this concocted stew to watch a another phoney ill placed smile.

  15. Vip says:

There is speculation that the reason why the White House refuses to release the Bolton documents that the Democrats have been demanding is because there are papers showing Bolton requested info about Wilson’s wife, thus finding out she was a covert-agent. Bolton then disclosed this to Rove, Libby, Cheney, Bush, etc. including the NY Times’ Judith Miller. A real investigative reporter should look into whether there is some truth to this.

  16. Brad Eleven says:

No way does GWB realize how much trouble he could be in. I assert that the atmosphere is very much like it was in the run-up to the Iraq invasion, viz: “It’s a slam dunk,” “This is actually win-win,” “Never mind the polls–when we win this one, we will be welcomed as liberators.”

I stand by my prediction this time last year that GWB would win handily and then get a scandal big enough to eclipse Watergate. I agree completely that the press is the only hope of conviction–but that the press includes blogs. Short-term prediction: GOP talking points will become surreal enough that even dittoheads will start to defect.

ObPoeticJustice: The linchpin that will galvanize the press is at the core of the scandal: the threat of jail for protecting a confidential source. Watch for the GOP to try something horrifically stupid like breaking into someone’s office to suppress and/or insert information.

This is pretty much what keeps me sane: believing that these incompetent fascists are going to shoot themselves in the foot in the light of day. Pride goeth before a fall, arrogance blindeth its owner.

  17. Brett Fraser says:

All the handwrining about having a congress that is aligned with the president has missed the reality that there is an election next year where all of the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate will be up for reelection. This scandal seems well timed for that election which may very well turn the balance of power in congress. And that will affect the supreme court nominations as well. (One has to wonder why Rhenquist is hanging on so hard to his position instead of retiring and allowing W to appoint his successor. Perhaps he doesn’t like who W might select to replace him and is holding out for another president.)
