Appearing on Fox this morning, former House Majority Leader Dick Armey said the following in regards to his assessment of the growing leak scandal:
We’ve got Karl Rove, who is under this constant attack of political malarkey, who has probably the most documented case of his evidence of anyone in the the whole story. So quite frankly, I think the American people are seeing it for what it is right now. More than anything else it’s a political farce not a matter of national security interests. [Fox News, 7/14/05]
VERSUS
Here’s what Dick Armey said about the case back in October 2003 when we had no idea who may have been involved:
Now, there was no reason to tell the world about the ambassador’s wife. It was just a short-sighted, self-centered, simple-minded cowardly act of revenge, and who’s paying the cost? The Bush White House If they ever find [the leakers], they ought to just — they ought to just kick them out of the White House and prosecute them, because the greater the pretension, the greater the hypocrisy. [CNN, 10/19/03]
Indeed, Mr. Armey, hypocrisy is an easily understood story.

The problem is we don’t knwo it’s a crime yet. Until then, there is no hypocrisy for Armey or anyone else.
July 14th, 2005 at 12:00 pmSorry Will, but Armey’s comments are hypocritical, and are not dependent on whether someone committed a crime.
hy·poc·ri·sy
The practice of professing beliefs, feelings, or virtues that one does not hold or possess; falseness.
Armey’s comments fit the definition all too well.
July 14th, 2005 at 12:05 pmThe crime is self evident. If it’s not then it opens the door for all kinds of “accidental” revelations. And there does not have to be a crime to be hypocritical.

July 14th, 2005 at 12:11 pmWho’s Dick? What Armey?
July 14th, 2005 at 12:13 pmAttack of the Dick Army!
July 14th, 2005 at 12:17 pmJust more of the same.
July 14th, 2005 at 12:34 pmA Dick Army OK with leakers. Break out the plastic mattress covers. Can’t Resist.
July 14th, 2005 at 12:49 pm#1
According to USA Today - the situation falls short of a crime being committed so I guess its time to call off the attack dogs!
July 14th, 2005 at 1:15 pmliberals hate Rove because he’s a winner. That’s all this is about
July 14th, 2005 at 1:34 pmWhat did Rove win? Wasn’t he fired by Bush, Sr. for similar tactics? Also, if Bush, Sr. and Bush, Jr. disagree, which one would you support?
July 14th, 2005 at 1:49 pmliberals hate Rove because he’s a winner. That’s all this is about
Can I stop laughing now?
I don’t hate Rove. But I do think his behavior is despicable. Ruining the career of someone who was actually working to make America a safer place from terrorism is a disgusting act.
And you conservatives support him? I guess you really don’t care about America after all.
July 14th, 2005 at 2:05 pmI came across this quote on ABC:
‘”The extreme left is once again attempting to define the modern Democratic Party by rabid partisan attacks, character assassination and endless negativity,” said Rep. Tom Reynolds, R-N.Y., chairman of the GOP congressional campaign committee.’ (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=938961)
At first I thought “hypocracy again” but then I realized that he wasn’t accusing us of something he considered a BAD thing, he was just laughing at how feeble we are at adopting age-old Republican tactics. Here we are saying “it’s not about whether its a crime, it’s about revealing the identity of a CIA agent” and the Republicans are smirking and saying to themselves “what light-weight attacks - if it were a Democratic administration we would be yelling ‘Treason! Supporting Terrorism! Inviting another September 11th by undermining our intelligence system! This man shouldn’t just be fired, he should be sent to a camp in Saudi Arabia to see what information they can get from him! Why hasn’t the president classified him as an enemy combatant?!’
July 14th, 2005 at 2:09 pmAlbert-
Quite right on the second paragraph there. Republicans are laughing because the Democrats - yet again - have a mountain of political ammo to play with, and all they do is throw water balloons.
We need a new party. One that doesn’t try to be Republican light. One that won’t show themselves to be totally ineffective in dealing with the GOP slime machine.
Progressive party, anyone?
July 14th, 2005 at 2:13 pmI have been trying to get an answer from the repubs that like to “hang out” with the cool kids here, but none will answer. I know you are lurking around here. I’ve posted this several times to no avail. Come on reps, throw me a bone.
July 14th, 2005 at 2:33 pmDidn’t Bush, Sr. fire Rove during his administration?
If Bush, Sr. and Bush, Jr. were at odds, which would a good redstater support?
A good restater supports win-at-any-cost, even if it means tearing down the Republic in the process.
July 14th, 2005 at 3:11 pmYou don’t know Dick, Armey.
July 14th, 2005 at 3:27 pmbogus comments from another hack
July 14th, 2005 at 3:51 pmYou mean Dick Armey’s comments above? Right.
July 14th, 2005 at 3:58 pmHumorous that Rove is the main story here….forget about the fact that a CIA agent sends her hubby, a lap dog for the left, to investigate WMD allegations whom issues no written report, lies overtly about false documents he has not seen, concludes to the world that the problem is solved without any scrutiny to factual evidence, and is then wholly discredited by multiple European intelligence reports….but libs, the story is Karl Rove, whom did not commit a crime (I know it is impossible for any of you to read the law itself)….and the beat of the leftist drums rings hollow again.
July 14th, 2005 at 4:29 pmAnother vigilant member of the right comes forth spewing the GOP talking points dutifully.
What a good little lap dog you are, Strathmore.
forget about the fact that a CIA agent sends her hubby
She may have recommended him, but she did not have the authority to send him. Excellent regurgitated talking point, though.
a lap dog for the left
The same man who worked for George H.W. Bush? Another dutifully regurgitated talking point. Unsubstantiated, but dutifully regurgitated.
lies overtly about false documents he has not seen
The Senate report was inconclusive, at best, and didn’t state that Wilson lied. Another finely vomited talking point!
and is then wholly discredited by multiple European intelligence reports
Actually, they discredited Bush’s claims, but you have belched forth yet another talking point. Bravo!
the story is Karl Rove, whom did not commit a crime
This has yet to be proven one way or another, but you have managed to throw in yet another finely reconstituted talking point. You are doing a great job on behalf of the GOP.
Now all you have to do is repeat this over and over, then click your heels three times, and you’ll be back home in Kansas before you know it…
July 14th, 2005 at 4:48 pm“the story is Karl Rove, whom did not commit a crime”
Youm don’tm actuallym soundm anym smaterm whenm youm trym tom copym howm smartm peoplem speakm, andm failm.
July 14th, 2005 at 5:00 pmTry this, Professor Genius - when you don’t know whether to use “who” or “whom,” try replacing it with “he” or “him,” and see which one works better.
Smarter trolls, please.
July 14th, 2005 at 5:02 pmStrathmore,
You think you love your country? You support outing covert intelligence agents who protect our freedom? Are you against fighting for freedom and protecting our collective interests? Apparently all you care about is staying in power. It sickens me that so-called conservatives would even consider being on the dispicable side of this argument. You all should be ashamed. really.
July 14th, 2005 at 5:05 pmAs I mentioned over at my blog, I think the mental whipflash on this Rove thing is just going to break the right-wing distortion machine. Perhaps I’m just naive, but I just can’t see how anyone can buy any of this crap. I can understand the defense of Rove, but not the complete flip-flop of the basic facts which have already been out for almost two years. Then again, just looking over this message board, the rubes do seem to be buying it yet again.
July 14th, 2005 at 5:09 pmHey Republicans, ever wonder why Dubya refers to Rove as “Turd Blossom”? Do you think it might be that Rove is a “shit”?
July 14th, 2005 at 5:10 pmI’ve heard it said before, and it is so true: Bush could eat a live baby on TV, and the right wing would rush to defend him. I can hear the defense now: ‘The baby wasn’t actually alive,’ ‘The baby was a child of left-wing traitors, and he deserved to die,’ ‘This is just another partisan smear campaign,’ ‘The left wing talks about this because they have no agenda other than to attack the president,’ and, of course, ‘Remember September 11! If you don’t support our president, you are for the terrorists!’. Sheesh. Rove is finally gonna get what he deserves. If what goes around comes around, then he is way overdue.
July 14th, 2005 at 5:12 pmWhere’s McCain? Shouldn’t he act more like an American and less like a political lapdog? The only worthy Republicans are the ones that display their anger at this act of White House treason. So far, none have been heard from!
July 14th, 2005 at 5:29 pmDick Armey, Hypocrite? Can’t Be
But, alas!
July 14th, 2005 at 5:30 pmlots of bad info here, even on the liberal side. No, Wilson was NOT found to have lied. Not even close. NO his wife did not send him to Niger, nor could she have. NO, Plame was not a “glorified secretary” - and if she had been, wouldn’t that have precluded her ability to hand pick a US envoy to send to Niger? No Wilson was not a leftist in any way shape or form. He’s a career diplomat who saw a forged document and a bunch of cheap lies and called them what they were and are.
Yes, a crime has been committed. Yes Bush said he’d fire anyone involved, and now after previously denying involvement, we find out that Rove is involved.
July 14th, 2005 at 5:32 pmYes, national security is compromised. How much? We don’t know for sure, but isn’t ANY too much? Yes, Armey’s comments are hypocritical in the extreme. Amazing moral relativism going on on the right wing these days. Yes, George H.W. Bush referred to Wilson as a “hero”. He was right then, and he is now. Of course, Wilson wouldn’t be a hero if Rove hadn’t crapped his diapers and outed a covert agent out of his sheer childish need for revenge, but there’s not much we on the left can do about that, is there?
Onceler:
Thanks for restating the facts on the ground - again. Sadly, these little details get trampled by the trolls who come in here spewing their GOP talking points, and offering little more than a diversion from the facts at hand.
But, we will continue to restate reality over and over again until it finally sinks in…
And yes, I do find the extreme level of moral relativism on the right to very amusing. I think they would allow 9th month abortions if it would get Bush and Rove off the hook.
July 14th, 2005 at 5:38 pmDigging in For the Fight
Seems reporters are digging in for the fight on the Karl Rove issue. It’s all part of the WB42 5:30 Report with Doug Krile.
July 14th, 2005 at 5:38 pmJoe Wilson voted for W in 2000. This little fact is something the trolls here don’t want to confront, but he has been a backer of the GOP. I really don’t think this out and out lying is going to help the Repuglicans, but hey, I won’t stop them. Never stop a rattlesnake from biting itself.
July 14th, 2005 at 5:55 pmI am sure that Fox News confronted Dick Armey with his past statement, and then questioned him about it though. right? hahahahahah. *wipes tear*
July 14th, 2005 at 7:20 pmReading many of the Republican comments on this issue reminds me of the reaction of American Communists after learning of the pact Stalin signed with Hitler. The Communists went from lock step denunciations of the Nazis to lock step praise of them as peace loving. (They changed again when Hitler doublecrossed Stalin.)
We see the same kind of dishonest behavior from people having the temerity to call themselves ‘conservatives” though all they seem to want to conserve is their own power. They went from universal condemnation of the leaker to universal condemnation of those the leaker attacked, and the only change in the known facts of the matter was who the leaker likely was. Nothing more completely exposes the vacuousness of their babble about patriotism and values.
Today’s Republicans offer a good study of the totaliutarian mentality trying to take over a democracy.

I pasted his qoutes and aked him to defend them, and called him a cretin just to make sure he got the proper spirit. There’s 1-800 numbers too….
The Progressives have to call the liars liars, and you have to remind the Republican in the next cubical that Nothing Bush has Turned Out Well, and everthing has come to pass as predicted by the liberals.

July 15th, 2005 at 6:35 am….and no one here is spouting the Dems talking points (sarcasm off)
July 15th, 2005 at 10:28 amWell done, ThinkProgress! What a quote! Perhaps you guys can devote a whole blog to the quotes before Rove was tagged and now! I think Bush 41 had a great quote about leaking names of agents. You all can read it at DailyKos. Lets get more then just Armey’s quote and list them all.
July 15th, 2005 at 10:51 am#11 Yes indeed, he was. And it gets better: He was fired for leaking info to ROBERT NOVAK!!!!
July 15th, 2005 at 10:53 amWhenever a topic begins with “according to foxnews”, I imagine Coulter and O’Reilly sharing sex toys and I throw up.
I get over it and continue on and repeat myself.

July 15th, 2005 at 10:34 pmThe only crime here is your own stupidity. Plame was never a deep cover operative, her husband is not just a liar, he’s a damn liar. Even your own beloved NY Times has admitted it was not Rove who took a leak on Plame. I offered a week ago that you idiots should Move-on. org to your next attempt to damage Bush. Its fun to watch you idiots make fools out of yourselves. All of a sudden you libs care about protecting the CIA? Give me a break. No one believes that BS. As long as the country is at war your party will never be returned to power. You libs cannot be trusted to defend this country. But you already know that don’t you? That’s why you and your ilk have done everything in your power to undermine a nation at war. Your paheic!
There’s a bed in the pysch ward for you too Mike.
You’ll be rooming with fake.
Now watch yourself, he does have a habit of getting “handsy” when he sleepwalks.
When you “share” in tomorrows group session tell your therapist about your multiple personality disorder. You won’t have sucess if you aren’t honest.
